The first thing to know, is that if the patient has had a three day hospital stay as an admitted patient prior to entering the nursing home, Medicare will pay for the stay and the rehabilitation, subject to limits. Here is how it works.

The first 20 days are paid 100%. The next 80 days are paid partially, but there is an expensive co-pay per day. For many people, their supplemental insurance covers that copay. What happens if you successfully rehab and go home, and end up back in the hospital a couple of months later? The 100 day clock will reset and you will get another 100 days if there has been a 60 day gap between leaving the nursing home and the subsequent hospital admission. This is not unlimited, as there is a lifetime limit, but that is rarely a limit that anyone reaches. Alternatively, what happens if you are unable to return home by the end of the 100 days? At this point, Medicare quits paying and the patient must pay privately for care. With the average cost of care exceeding $8,900 per month in Pennsylvania, many families have trouble making ends meet.

It’s your right to choose the home health and hospice provider you prefer. Ask for VNA.

Most families in this situation should consult with an elder law attorney to understand how Medicaid benefits can be accessed to pay for care. The Medicaid rules are complex and require considerable planning.

Medicare’s “preventative services” can help you monitor your health and stay healthy By Gina Mazza For Butler County Senior News

Y

ou’ve probably heard it said a number of times, and it’s true: The best way to stay healthy is to lead a healthy lifestyle by exercising, eating well, not smoking and keeping your weight in check. Easier said than done? Well, did you know that Medicare can help you achieve this? Yes, Medicare pays for many preventive services that can keep you disease-free and feeling good. Preventive services— such as exams, shots, lab tests, screenings, counseling and education—can detect health problems early on, when treatment works best. These services can also help you monitor your health on an ongoing basis, and even keep you from getting certain diseases. Perhaps the best news of all is that many of these preventive tests, screenings and counseling sessions are free to Medicare recipients, with no copays or deductibles. What “preventative services” are covered?

* Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening

* Glaucoma test

* Alcohol misuse screening

* Hepatitis B shots

* Annual wellness visit

* Hepatitis C screening

* Bone mass measurement

* HIV screening

* Breast cancer screening/mammogram

* Laboratory services

* Cardiovascular heart disease screening

* Lung cancer screening

* Cervical and vaginal cancer screening

* Medical nutrition therapy

* Colon colorectal cancer screening

* Obesity screening and counseling

* Depression screening

* Pneumonia shots

Medicare’s “preventative services” can help you monitor your health and stay healthy How to access your preventative health information

Continued from page 7 Start with a “Welcome to Medicare” or “Wellness” visit

It’s a good idea to register online at MyMedicare.gov. This will give you direct access to your preventive health information—24 hours a day, every day. You can track your preventive services, get a two-year calendar of the Medicare-covered tests and screenings you’re eligible for, and print a personalized “on-the-go” report to take to your next doctor’s appointment.

During the first 12 months that you have Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance), Medicare will cover a one-time “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit. The visit is a great way to get current on important screenings and shots, and talk with your doctor about your family history. During this visit, your doctor will: 4 Record your medical and social history (alcohol or tobacco use, diet and activity level). 4 Check your height, weight and blood pressure. 4 Calculate your body mass index (BMI). 4 Give you a simple vision test. 4 Review your potential risk for depression and your level of safety. 4 Offer to talk with you about creating advance directives, legal documents that allow you to put in writing what kind of healthcare you would want if you were too ill to speak for yourself.

February 2017 • Butler County Senior News

8

Your doctor will also give you a written plan (or, checklist) for the screenings, shots and other preventive services you may need. When you make your appointment, let your doctor’s office know that you’d like to schedule your “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit. You pay nothing for this visit if your doctor or other healthcare provider accepts “assignment.” (Assignment is an agreement by your doctor, provider or supplier to be paid directly by Medicare, to accept the payment amount Medicare approves for the service, and not to bill you for any more than the Medicare deductible and coinsurance.) February 2017 • Butler County Senior News

If you’ve had Medicare Part B for longer than 12 months, you can get a yearly “Wellness” visit to develop or update a personalized prevention plan based on your current health and risk factors. This visit may include: 2 A health risk assessment and review of your medical and family history. 2 Developing or updating a list of current providers and prescriptions. 2 Height, weight, blood pressure, and other routine measurements. 2 Detection of any cognitive impairment. 2 Personalized health advice. 2 A list of risk factors and treatment options. 2 A screening checklist for appropriate preventive services. When you make your appointment, let your doctor’s office know that you’d like to schedule your yearly “Wellness” visit. Again, you pay nothing for this visit if your doctor accepts assignment.

For more information about Medicare preventive services, call (800) MEDICARE—(800) 633-4227—or visit Medicare.gov. TTY users can call (877) 486-2048. BCSN Tried and true ways to help prevent illness To stay healthy and help delay or prevent many diseases, take time to do the following. • Exercise. Do any physical activity that you enjoy for 20 to 30 minutes, five or six days a week. Talk to your doctor about the right exercise program for you. • Eat well. Eat a healthy diet of different foods, like fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains. Limit the amount of saturated fat you eat. • Keep a healthy weight. Watch your portions balance the number of calories you eat with the number you burn by exercising. • Don’t smoke. If you smoke, talk with your doctor about getting help to quit. • Get preventive services. Delay or lessen the effects of diseases by getting preventive services and shots.
