Penn State Extension recognizes DPW for its contribution to the Senior Gardens Every year, the Senior Gardens in Beaver County continue to “grow”, thanks to the nurturance of Mike Durham, a volunteer master gardener with Beaver County Penn State Extension and manager of the gardens, which are co-sponsored by the Beaver County Office on Aging and Penn State Extension’s master garden program. “I try to improve the gardens every year for the
seniors,” Mike says. This year, the Beaver County Department of Public Works (DPW) cleared a large area at the gardens by hauling away trees and stumps, removing tons of dirt, and leveling the area with 50 tons of crushed rock. Also this past year, Mike spearheaded a fundraising campaign that resulted in $1,900 from private contributors. “As a result, we were able to purchase a 20- by 26-feet
shelter to be erected on that spot,” he adds. “DPW has also made us a large parking lot, provided our seniors with two portable toilets, and picks up our trash regularly.” Penn State Extension acknowledged DPW’s wonderful contribution to the gardens by selecting DPW 2015 King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Penn State Extension recognizes DPW for its contribution to the Senior Gardens Continued from page 1 for its Friend of the Extension Award. Recognition was given on November 17 at Felicity Farms Bed & Breakfast in Beaver. At this same event, Ruthanne Bentley received a certificate of appreciation for three years of service on the Beaver County Cooperative Extension Executive Board, having served as treasurer during the last year. Beaver County residents ages 60 and older are welcome to participate in the Senior Gardens on Western Avenue in Brighton Township. The average size of the gardens is 15 feet by 20 feet—ample size for an abundance of vegetables and flowers, yet small enough to easily maintain. Master gardeners are generally at the gardens to answer your garden questions.

“Get a few of your friends or family to help you and share in your gardening experience,” Mike suggests. “You can take turns watering, weeding and tending to your plants. Bring a lunch or snack and socialize with the other gardeners. Making new friends and swapping garden stories, especially successes, will certainly make your day that much more enjoyable. Gardening is not only a joy, but a physical activity that will keep you in shape for years to come.”
Plots are available at the Senior Gardens.

Could stem cells be the next penicillin? By David Ebner Chances are that you have heard about stem cells. But did you know that stem cells are being used right now in the United States to treat debilitating lung diseases? With advancements in the study of stem cells, the question is posed: are stem cells the next penicillin? Stem cells and penicillin come from humble beginnings, they are both used to treat lifeThe discovery of penicillin threatening conditions, and was an early example of just like penicillin, stem cell biground breaking medical ologists have won Nobel Prizes advancements changing the for their discoveries. new ways to treat COPD.
Over time, stem cells have crept into the national dialogue as a buzzword, particularly the stem cells found in fetuses. However, the stem cells being used to treat diseases in the U.S., and the same cells that warranted the 2012 Nobel Prize in Medicine, are adult stem cells. This type of stem cell is found fully developed in all people.

At the turn of the 20th century, biologists discovered that some cells in the body had not yet been assigned as a certain type of cell. The use of these cells to treat diseases traces back to 1968 when the first bone marrow transplant was performed. The result of placing healthy stem cells into a sick individual’s body is the creation of healthy blood cells that are not infected. In turn, these cells replace the diseased ones and start to heal the patient. Today, a clinic called the Lung Institute is using adult stem cells from the patient’s own fat, blood or bone marrow to provide similar healing results for people with lung diseases. The physician gives the patient a growth factor that multiplies the stem cells into millions of healthy cells and extracts the stem cells from the patient, then they separate the cells and reintroduce them into the patient’s body. The result is the promotion of healing in the lungs. Not only can this slow the progression of the disease, but it also works to restore lung function. Just as penicillin was recognized by the medical community, so have stem cell developments. If the number of people who have already been successfully treated with stem cells is any indication of the future, then it will undoubtedly be heralded as one of the ground-breaking medical technologies of its time.
Resolve To Get Your Life Back With Stem Cell Therapy. Treatments at the Lung Institute use stem cells from the patient’s own body to promote healing, which can slow the progression of the disease, improve lung function and quality of life. Call (855) 978-5767 or visit lunginstitute.com/SeniorNews

Try some different resolutions for 2016 By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

re you one of many who choose exercise and losing weight as your new year ’s resolution? These most likely are two of the top resolutions set by many people each year, and I think you would agree it would be very beneficial to many. Unfortunately, very few people achieve their weight loss and before you know it exercise less and less until they eventually stop exercising all together. This seems especially the case when the weather turns blistery cold with snow and ice. When February arrives, goals are set aside and interest is lost. Not to discourage you from going forward with the attempt for weight loss and adding exercise to your
2 Write down your recipes for the next generation to enjoy. Make sure they are accurate. It is hard for people to know what a handful of an ingredient is, so be specific. A can of diced tomatoes your grandmother bought probably was 16 ounces, and now it may be just 13 ounces. Sometimes people say they cannot get the recipe to turn out like their relatives did, and this can be a reason for it. 2 Label your photos. Mark down when they were taken, where and who is in the photo. Sometimes your mother may have looked just like her cousin when they were young. 2 Write up a family tree to identify relatives, maiden names, and when and where they were born. 2 Tell your family details of things that happened in your life or your family’s life. It helps them to understand where they came from or why a certain relative acted in a particular way. Talk about participation in school, education, military, war and medical issues. A family issue that may have happened 50 years ago probably is not as shocking today as it had been then. 2 Get your papers in order. Check the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies—especially if a deceased parent or spouse is listed. Maybe you divorced and did not change things. Someone could end up getting the
insurance money who you did not intend on having it. 2 Start deciding who gets what when you downsize or pass away. I have talked with lawyers who have told me that family members have been in their office arguing over the will plus who is going to get the kitchen table and chairs. 2 Get creative. What types of things interest you? Come up with your own goal customized to benefit your interests and needs. Still considering exercise and weight loss as one of your resolution goals? That is A-OK. In an effort to stick with it, I would recommend trying out the fitness equipment and exercise classes at our Beaver County senior community centers. You will be treated to excellent classes and friendly instructors, plus you may choose from a variety of equipment such as treadmills and recumbent bikes. To top it off, while you are getting fit, be prepared to meet friendly people and have a great time. For details, contact Center at the Mall at the Beaver Valley Mall at (724) 728-1422, Circle of Friends at Baden at (724) 849-4224 and Circle of Friends New Brighton at (724) 8461959. BCSN

Is this news you can use?
A 20-bed tuberculosis sanatorium was established in Beaver County in 1923 at the site that is now Penn State Beaver Campus. It was managed by husband and wife Dr. Fred Wilson and Dr. Ruth Wilson. Since there were no effective anti-tuberculosis medications at that time, treatment consisted mostly of isolation, proper diet and bed rest. Patients were treated there for the next 30 years. The first recorded information regarding a medical practice in Beaver County referred to Mary Dungan, who traveled here from Philadelphia in 1772. She and her family settled near the southern border of the county, now known as Frankfort Springs. She was trained by Dr. Benjamin Rush, one of the signers of the US Constitution. It is not known how long or formal her training was, but she may have been taught as an apprentice to the doctor, learning from textbooks and at his patients’ bedsides. She did not receive a formal medical degree. When Dr. Rush went to Edinburg for further education and training, his library became her property, and she brought the books to Beaver County. She practiced medicine for many years, helping many early settlers. BCSN
