Circle of Friends New Brighton hosts Gospel Light Up Night at its new location More than 150 older adults braved an incoming snow and ice storm in early December to attend the second annual Gospel Light Up Night sponsored by Circle of Friends New Brighton. Christmas cheer was in the air as several choirs and vocal musicians sang songs that reminded everyone of the “reason for the season.” New Brighton seniors and their guests convened at

the Holy Family Parish social hall. Attendees were entertained by St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church choir from Baden, New Brighton soloist and re c o rd i n g a r t i s t D a w n Savage, and the Christian Lighthouse Ministries Choir of Aliquippa. ast October, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services announced the costs associated with Medicare Parts A and B for 2014. The Medicare Part A deductible is what a beneficiary will need to pay when admitted to the hospital and has Original Medicare only. For 2014, the deductible is $1,216. This deductible covers the inpatient hospital days 1-60. The beneficiary will pay $304 per day for days 61-90 and $608 per day for days 90-150 per benefit period. If a beneficiary would need to stay in a skilled nursing facility, there is no cost for days 1-20, but the beneficiary would need to pay $152 per day for days 21-100 per benefit period. The standard Part B premium for 2014 will be $104.90, the same amount for 2013. Those beneficiaries whose income is more than $85,000 as a single person or $170,000 as a married couple will pay a higher Part B premium. The Part B deductible for 2014 will remain at $147.

If you know a Medicare beneficiary who is having difficulty paying their Part B premium, assistance is available called the Medicare Savings Program. If a beneficiary qualifies, the Department of Public Welfare will assist by paying the Part B premium and possibly Part A and B co-payments and co-insurances depending on the beneficiaryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s income and resource levels. To qualify, a single person must make less than $1,294/month and have less than $7,080 in resources. A married couple must make less than $1,746/month and have less than $10,620 in resources. BCSN

PA 211 Southwest serves as one-stop resource for assistance with housing, utilities, food and more County in October, but county residents have been utilizing the service since the beginning of the year. So far in 2013, 893 calls have been made to 2-1-1, with 135 in October alone. The callers’ top needs include rent assistance, electric payment assistance and other temporary financial assistance. Individuals can also call the hotline for help with matters related to transportation, education, healthcare, mental health and substance abuse, public health and safety, criminal justice and legal, material goods, and consumer services such as money management and tax assistance.

By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News Toni, 76, has endured a lot of loss in the past few years. Her beloved husband, son and sister all passed away during that time. While dealing with grief and burial expenses, Toni fell behind on paying her utility bill. “I was on CAP [utility customer assistance program] and had received a LIHEAP grant,” Toni explains, “but I couldn’t apply to the other utility programs that were open and available because I hadn’t been given a shut-off notice.” With a referral from PA 2-1-1 Southwest, a local agency was able to help Toni get back on track with making her utility payments. PA 2-1-1 Southwest is a free and easily accessible information hub that connects people with health, housing, disaster, human services and other community resources. It serves 11 counties in southwestern Pennsylvania: Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, Washington and Westmoreland. The phone line answers 24/7 and all calls are kept confidential.

“Every day, 2-1-1’s trained ‘resource navigators’ connect callers with organizations that can help them get the resources and assistance they need through more than 7,000 available services,” says Kevin Boozel, PA 2-11 Southwest project manager for the United Way of Allegheny County.

United Way is the lead agency that got the 2-1-1 initiative moving in the 11-county region, and oversees the 2-1-1 call centers. “They can assess your needs then direct you to the appropriate agencies in a timely manner, thereby saving you the frustration of making multiple calls. We match you to the best and closest resources in your community. And all we need to know is your zip code and the reason for your call.” The 2-1-1 database contains information on more than 5,000 health and human service agencies. Calls have been on the upswing since 2-1-1 was initiated in the region in 2011. The third quarter of 2013 showed a 66-percent increase in calls compared to the same quarter in 2012, and a 78-percent increase compared to the third quarter of 2011. PA 2-1-1 was officially rolled out in Beaver

PA 2-1-1 Southwest has been a lifesaver for many in the region. Pam, 82, is another good example. She had undergone surgery and was having difficulty bathing without a safety rail. Prior to calling 2-1-1, Pam attempted to find an agency that could install a rail and other safety equipment in her bathroom, but she was unsuccessful in finding one. “I was afraid of hurting myself in the tub so I was washing up in the sink since my surgery,” she recalls. PA 2-1-1 Southwest was able to connect Pam to an agency that came to her home and installed the proper safety equipment. “I’m able to enjoy the full use of my bathroom again. In fact, it was so successful that we’re making Gospel Light Up Night an annual event.” Circle of Friends is a nonprofit agency that provides programs for seniors in and around Beaver County. By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News * Remember and reflect on the service of our US military: January 16, Persian Gulf War began; January 27, signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord; January 28, US-Vietnam cease fire. * Martin Luther King Jr. Day will be celebrated January 20. * Monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits will increase 1.5 percent in 2014. The SSI federal payment will be $721 for an individual and $1,082 for a couple. * Medicare information: Most people do not pay a premium for Part A. If you do, it costs $426 a month. The Part B premium is $104.90 a month. The Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage) monthly premium varies by plan, as does the Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) monthly premium.

Angela Gentile celebrates the 99th birthday of her grandmother, Mary Phillips. My grandmother Mary Phillips turned 99 years old in November and is on her way to 100 this year. My sister took this picture on my phone. When we showed my grandmother, she said, “That’s instant!” Many people make New Year’s resolutions, promising to do something good or stop doing something bad beginning January 1. By the end of January, life gets in the way and the thought of the resolution has fizzled. Oftentimes, I think people may want a huge life transforming outcome, and it may be too hard to attain. It just does not happen in an instant.

It was a family affair for wrapping gifts for the Beaver County Office on Aging Surprises for Shut-ins program. Helping out were Gina Arzberger; Andrew Arzberger, 3; Mary Arzberger, Midland; and William Arzberger, 5.

I do not make resolutions. I just think about what I want to accomplish and plan on things that are reasonably attainable. I find a bit more success with this. I like to vegetable garden, so I’ve already purchased seed to grow something different. I am looking forward to having Tuscan kale and lima beans this summer. I plan on reading another 20 to 30 books this year. I look forward to reading the books I picked up at the library book sale and the books my father has passed along to me. I get a chance to read in the winter when I am not doing yard and garden work. I enjoy traveling abroad each year. All my friends are asking me where I am going. I am looking at some different trip itineraries, but I have not decided yet. Of course, there are a few things at the house that need some attention. Some small driveway cracks need to be patched, and the garage windows are due to be replaced. What do you want to accomplish in 2014? It may not all happen instantly like a camera phone picture, but make a small plan and start working on it. Your accomplishments will likely bring you joy. Happy 2014! BCSN

Fun facts about Senior Day at the Mall • The Beaver Valley Mall opened in 1970, and Senior Day at the Mall got underway in 1974. • Senior Day was established by BCOA information specialist Margaret “Peg” Pierce (deceased in 1990). Peg’s inspiration to gather seniors in one common location in Beaver County to enjoy camaraderie with peers, get their blood pressure taken, be entertained by local entertainers, receive information from vendors, create volunteer opportunities for seniors and enjoy “coffee and doughnuts” sparked many years of monthly gatherings at Beaver Valley Mall. • A cup of coffee in 1974 cost 25 cents, a gallon of gas cost 55 cents, an average new car cost $3,700. • The Beaver Valley Club of Retired Persons has served the coffee and doughnuts since the event’s inception. • In the early years, three groups would rotate to provide the entertainment: the Beaver Valley Club of Retired Persons, Rochester Senior Center Kitchen Band

and Aliquippa Senior Center Chorus. Sometimes, the Circle of Friends dancers would entertain. Also, organist Randy Cable would play when a group could not perform. • In the mid-1970s, pocket calculators started appearing in stores and the first UPC bar code scanners were being used. No cell phones at that time! Now you can find Day at the Mall information online at www.seniordayatthemall.com. • The event started with only three or four vendors a month. This year, the event had up to 65 vendors, expanding with legislators, local businesses, media, medical facilities, physical and occupational therapists, historians, physicians, even a culinary specialist and veterinarian. • Over the years, seven people from BCOA have served at the Day at the Mall coordinator: Peg Pierce, Linda Hall, Angela Gentile, Mary Trunick, Christina Winnewicz, Sandee Monahan and Pat Stannard.

• Day at the Mall is now proactive with the betterment of older adult’s lives from 1974 until today. The Beaver County Office on Aging is proud and honored to proclaim that the Senior Day has become the number one resource in Beaver County for “on-the-spot consultation” and information. The themes and topics are designed to address older adult’s unique problems as they age. As a bonus, the event has a component of fun and socializing through the creative planning of entertainment and activities. Roseanna Cosky The Beaver County Office on Aging wishes the best for Roseanna Cosky, who recently retired. She worked parttime for 14 years in the support department, answering the telephone, sorting and routing mail, checking obituaries, sending out packets of information to consumers and making copies. Roseanna enjoyed her job, especially greeting people who came into the office. She appreciated when consumers or their families expressed their thanks for what the Office on Aging did to assist them, whether it was passing along information, filling out a form or providing in-home services.

Roseanna has a son, daughter and grandson. She is proficient in reading, writing and speaking Italian. Many times, she would help people translate letters sent by Italian relatives to their American relatives. 4 2 8-ounce packages of any white cheese, such as Swiss or cheddar 4 1 large can black olives, drained 4 1 large can green olives, drained 4 1/3 cup olive oil 4 1/3 cup balsamic vinegar 4 2 cloves minced garlic 4 1 t. parsley flakes 4 ½ t. dried basil Cut all cheeses into cubes. In a round pie pan, alternate a cube of white cheese and cream cheese to make a circle around the inside edge of the pan. Mix the green and black olives and place them in the center of the pan. Stir together the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic, parsley and basil. Pour the mixture over the cheese and olives. Refrigerate overnight. Serve with crackers. BCSN

How long should you keep your important records?

ccording to the Internal Revenue Service, the length of time that you should keep a document depends on the action, expense or event that it records. Generally, you must keep records that support an item of income or deductions on a tax return until the period of limitations for that return runs out. This is the period of time in which you can amend your tax return to claim a credit or refund, or that the IRS can assess additional tax. Following are the periods of limitations that apply to income tax returns. Unless otherwise stated, the years refer to the period after the return was filed. Returns filed before the due date are treated as filed on the due date. 1. You owe additional tax and situations (2), (3) and (4), below, do not apply to you; keep records for three years.

2. You do not report income that you should report, and it is more than 25 percent of the gross income shown on your return; keep records for six years.

Note: Keep copies of your filed tax returns. They help in preparing future tax returns and making computations if you file an amended return.

3. You file a fraudulent return; keep records indefinitely.

Keep records relating to property until the period of limitations expires for the year in which you dispose of the property in a taxable disposition.�� Generally, if you received property in a nontaxable exchange, your basis in that property is the same as the bases of the property you gave up, increased by any money you paid. Keep records on both the old and property until the period of limitations expires for the year in which you dispose of the new property in a taxable disposition.

4. You do not file a return; keep records indefinitely. 5. You file a claim for a credit or refund after you file your return; keep records for three years from the date you filed your original return or two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. 6. You file a claim for a loss from worthless securities or bad debt deduction; keep records for seven years. 7. Keep all employment tax records for at least four years after the date that the tax becomes due or is paid, whichever is later.

When your records are no longer needed for tax purposes, do not discard them until you check to see if you have to keep them longer for other purposes—such as for your insurance company or creditors. BCSN Source: IRS.gov
