Beaver County author recounts the lives and college basketball coaching careers of the legendary Miller family By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News
It’s Miller time! That’s not only a tagline for a popular brew. It’s also the title of a new book by Beaver Falls native David Burhenn (now of Aliquippa), in which he chronicles the lives of Hall of Fame basketball
coach John Miller and his two sons, Sean and Archie—all of whom have gone down in the annals of NCAA coaching history as great team leaders. Miller Time: Coach John Miller’s Story details how three elite college basketball programs—Arizona, Kentucky and Dayton—
can trace their success back to Beaver County, and specifically to former Blackhawk High School basketball coach John Miller. “The book focuses on how he raised his sons to not only play at top Division I programs at Pitt and NC State), but Continued on page 4

It’s never too late to reinvent yourself
Angela shows several drawings she did using Zentangle. By Angela Gentile Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
T
he great author C.S. Lewis once said, “You’re never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” Most of us have had personal goals and dreams that have not been fulfilled due to life circumstances getting in the way, procrastination, lack of motivation and other barriers. Reinventing yourself or making life changes may appear complicated at this stage of your life. You may believe that too much time has passed and that it would be too difficult to start something new. I would like to encourage you not to be so quick to give up on your goals and dreams. Reinventing yourself can
A good start to “reinventing yourself” is self-reflection and understanding that the good things you are seeking to accomplish will most likely take time and effort. Research and planning will need to be part of the process. Setting due dates to accomplish small goals will help move you closer to accomplishing your overall goal and will help you to stay motivated. Let supportive individuals in your life know of your efforts and ask for their help, if needed. If you are considering a major change and don’t know where to start, obtain resource information from articles in magazines, on the Internet and from reaching out to people who can help you learn from their experience to move you closer to you reaching your goal. Some of my personal ideas to get you thinking about long-forgotten dreams and goals include taking a conversational foreign language class at CCBC or purchasing an instructional language CD prior to going on a trip abroad, starting a vegetable and herb garden to grow your own food, learning how to paint or draw, planning a trip or getting involved with volunteerism. Volunteering is a great way to learn new skills, put your current skills to use and to connect with
people who have similar interests, goals and ideas. We all know people and maybe we are guilty ourselves of saying that we would like to do certain things but ultimately never follow through. I always thought it would be great to draw, but I could not draw animals and other things in proper proportion. Because of my desire to learn to create suitable visual pictures of animals and other figures through drawing, I decided to do something about it. Last year, I invested in a $4 book on how to do Zentangle. Zentangle is a method used to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Surprisingly, I found it very simple to use. By drawing straight and curved lines, circles and squiggles, you can make beautiful designs. It is non-technical, fun and relaxing. I enjoy doing the art while I am in a noisy, busy airport and while on vacation. One of my friends acknowledged my work as I was casually drawing while on vacation and commented that she did not know that I was an artist. I just chuckled. If that inner voice is giving you that nudge to accomplish a goal or dream, maybe it is your time to reinvent yourself! BCSN The Center at the Mall, located in Beaver Valley Mall, is offering a program beginning this month called “You Are Never too Old to Reinvent Yourself.” It will encourage movement through exercise and weight loss, if needed. There will be an introduction program from 11 to 11:45 a.m. on January 10 and 17. Sign up by stopping in the Center at the Mall or calling (724) 728-1422.

be as simple as striving to make small changes every day by just aiming to be a better version of yourself in all that you do. Those things can add up and be life changing. You may even gain the confidence and energy to go further and rediscover a major goal that you set aside a long time ago and are now ready to take.

Kobuta had a post office and a railroad station. Nothing remains of these communities. Rochester Manor + Villa’s “Vixens” raise funds for Beaver County Humane Society After the Rochester Manor + Villa Ladies Club, called the Villa Vixens, had the idea to help the community through a service project, they devised a clever campaign to raise money for pets. “Most of the women in the club had pets that they were fond of in their past,” explains Rochester Manor + Villa activities director Debbie Graham. So they chose to help the Beaver County Humane Society with a campaign called Pennies for Pets. A jar was placed at the reception desk and soon the pennies started to fill the jar. “Residents would put their loose change in the jar after outings,” Debbie says. “Families, friends and staff all contributed their two cents.”
Mary Ellen Wall presents a check for $150 to Susan Salyards, executive director of the Beaver County Humane Society. Then the club had the idea to visit the animals at the humane society and donate the monies collected. “Our ladies enjoyed all the dogs, cats and bunnies, noting how well they were taken care of and how healthy they looked.” The club officially presented a check for $150 to Susan Salyards, executive director of the Beaver County Humane Society.
