Beaver County Radio’s reach remains strong after 70-plus years on the air By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News
I
n this age of information overload, social media, and radical changes in how news is perceived and delivered, it’s not easy for traditional media outlets to stand out and reflect a positive impact on their intended audience. That’s only one of the many reasons why the longtime success of two local radio stations—WBVP 1230 and WMBA 1460, together known as Beaver County Radio—is so incredible. The stations celebrated their 70th anniversary last year at a beautiful gala in Beaver Falls, and yet the future is what station owner Mark Peterson is focusing on these days.
“The big news in the forefront is that we were approved for an FM radio station this past January and the equipment is ready to be installed,” he announces. “That FM station—99.3 FM—should be on the air this summer.”
10,000 to 15,000 per week, the coverage area extends north to Ellwood City, south to the Pittsburgh International Airport area, east to Cranberry Township in Butler County, and west to the East Palestine, Ohio area.
What’s the station’s secret to success and longevity? “It’s all about content,” comments Mark, who views his role as a caretaker of a valuable Beaver County asset, not just a media business. “The reason we’ve done well from the get-go is because we go overboard covering what’s happening right in our own back yard. It’s run like a big news station but for a small local community.”
The stations date back to the Forties. WBVP was founded in 1948 by Frank Smith and Thomas Price—who previously worked at WWSW in Pittsburgh—and Charles Onderka, who was employed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. WMBA was put on the air in that same decade by a group out of Pottsville called Miners Broadcasting Service, Inc. After a variety of sales and mergers over the ensuing

“Yankee Trader”, which airs every weekday from 1 to 2 p.m., is a classic listenerdriven, buy-sell-trade format. “People call in who are selling the back of a pickup or a cord of wood and say how much they want for it,” Mark comments. “Quite frankly, it’s fun to listen to. The station’s specialty programming on weekends also enjoys a robust listenership. “We have the only real traditional oldies show in the Pittsburgh area,” Mark notes. Solid Gold Saturday Afternoon, which airs from 12:30 to 5 p.m., consists of music from the 1950s and 1960s, with call-in requests taken. Perhaps this story illustrates just how tied into the local community the radio stations are. “We did a breaking news story recently where a news reporter called into station with a live report. Veterans honored during Flag Day Ceremony The Elks keep their promise that as long as there are vet-
erans, they will never be forgotten. The B.P.O.E. #283 in Rochester honored our veterans from Rochester Manor & Villa during their recent annual Flag Day ceremony. Local veterans were invited to dinner prior to the ceremony. They had a chance to talk with Elks members and meet the Marine JROTC who folded the flag during the ceremony. Each attending veteran was introduced by name and branch of service, then Brian Frank of the Rochester B.P.O.E. presented each one with a gift. Tears could be seen in the eyes of these proud veterans as they were acknowledged and given a round of applause.

Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin
Q& A By Colleen Dittman, Aging Care Manager Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
Question: What do I need to do to find out if I am eligible for CSP?
July 2019 • Beaver County Senior News
8
Answer: Contact the Beaver County Office on Aging at (724) 8472262 to let us know that you are interested. A knowledgeable intake worker will pre-screen your eligibility. If determined that you may be eligible, a Beaver County Office on Aging care manager will contact you to schedule an appointment at your home to complete an assessment on you, the caregiver and the person who is receiving care from you—the care receiver. The assessment will include a comprehensive evaluation of care needs to help determine what services can be reimbursed, as well as a financial disclosure and verification submitted on all members of the care receiver’s home. Based on the results of the assessment, the caregiver may be approved for reimbursement for services, supplies, assistive devices and home modifications. (Please note: the caregiver is required to use his or her own funds to pay for the approved services and be reimbursed at a percentage of that cost based on the financial disclosure and verification. Question: Am I eligible for the program if I do not live in the same house as my care receiver? Answer: Yes. If you are the primary caregiver, live in Pennsylvania and assume primary responsibility for the provision of care, while maintaining the physical and/or mental health of the care receiver, you are eligible for the program.
Beaver County Office on Aging answers questions about the Caregiver Support Program Question: My loved one receives the Community Health Choices program. Can I also have the Caregiver Support Program? Answer: No. If the caregiver or the care receiver receives Medical Assistance Long Term Services and Supports or any Waiver program, you are not eligible for the CSP. Question: As the caregiver, may I hire someone to provide personal care, respite care or companionship for my loved one, the care receiver? Answer: As the unpaid caregiver, you are able to hire any person of your choice who is NOT a relative to provide assistance with personal care, companionship or respite care. Question: Can I, the caregiver, get paid for providing services such as personal care, respite care or companionship and get reimbursed by CSP? Answer: No. Under CSP, neither the caregiver nor family member— regardless of whether or not they reside in the home of the care receiver—can be paid to provide care. Question: Can I be reimbursed for personal care supplies that I purchase for the care receiver? Answer: Yes. As the caregiver, you can be reimbursed for supplies needed on an ongoing basis to provide care to the care receiver. Items considered “consumable” such as toilet paper, shampoo and soap are excluded from the reimbursement, as are any services and supplies covered by insurance or a third
party payer. The Beaver County Office on Aging care manager will guide you with information about allowable and non-allowable expenses. Question: My loved one is in a wheelchair and needs a ramp. Can I be reimbursed for ramp installation? Answer: Yes. If the adaptation or home modification is made to improve the safety, increase functionality, improve accessibility or assist in the provision of care to the care receiver, it could be reimbursed. Bids are needed for the completion of the projects, and approval from the care manager is required before the reimbursement can be made. (Home repairs are not considered home modifications.) There is a lifetime cap of $2,000 for home modifications and assistive devices. Question: What other resources and assistance are provided? Answer: A care manager will provide you with information on available resources, links to available services, and access to a resource library with items available to help with problem solving, decision making and caregiver training. They will also be available for consultation as needed. The Caregiver Support Program (CSP) provides valuable resources, assistance and financial reimbursement for expenses to individuals who assume primary responsibility for the provision of care for an older adult or grandchild. The benefit to the caregiver is to help alleviate stress associated with caregiving and to support the caregiving relationship by focusing on the caregiver’s well being.

You can use... Take a walk in the park and experience many health benefits By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor, Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

Walking—it’s my favorite type of exercise. It is low impact
Beaver County Commissioners: Daniel C. Camp III, Chairman, Sandie Egley, Tony Amadio
and can be done by most people, and you just need a good pair of walking shoes. Research has shown that walking physically helps reduce sugar cravings, provides some relief from arthritis, reduces inflammation in the body, boosts endorphins (the “feel good” hormones), strengthens heart and cardiovascular health, lowers blood pressure and strengthens bones and muscles. Mentally, walking helps with reducing stress, experiencing happiness, decreasing negative thoughts, improving cognitive function, thinking clearer and improving depression symptoms.

There are lots of places to walk in Beaver County, especially in our county parks. I enjoy visiting the mile-long Paved Walking Track along Route 51. It is great to be see trees and hear the stream on the one side of the track. In inclement weather, it is great to walk inside at the Indoor Walking Track surrounding the indoor tennis courts in the Ice Arena building. Eight times around the track equals one mile. There are curtains around the indoor tennis courts to prevent most tennis balls from entering the walking track. Best of all, there is no cost to use these facilities.
Come and enjoy hot dogs and slices of watermelon. As always, come and enjoy coffee and doughnuts.
So get out and just keeping moving, and I hope to see you out in the community!

County baseball fields were named for and why? People will say the field has had its name for years; but as the years move on, not as many people know the story—perhaps because people are newer to the area or have passed away.

This could be the case for Lefty Cepull field in Aliquippa. Francis Cepull’s family moved to Aliquippa when he was an infant. The 1931 Aliquippa High School graduate was a left-handed baseball player known for his amazing curve and fastballs. For the next 20 years, he was known for his great skill in helping teams from Aliquippa, Beaver, Beaver Falls, Conway and Sewickley win various baseball titles. Cepull became well known in the Youngstown area, also. He helped lead the Strothers team to an Ohio State semipro crown and into the National semipro tournament in Wichita, Kansas. In the Kansas tournament, he averaged 14 strike outs and three hits per game. He received All District and All Ohio awards for his efforts. In one Ohio game, he threw a no-hitter. Though Cepull signed a professional contract with Detroit, he did not leave the area due to work and family obligations. After his playing days concluded, he focused the next 30 years on the Aliquippa Little League program. In recognition to his service to youth baseball, the Little League field was renamed Lefty Cepull Field in May 1982. Cepull passed away April 10, 1984. For several years, the San Rocco Festa used to be held in this area.
Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin BCOA APPRISE Program wins another BRAVO Award APPRISE program staff and volunteers were recently honored with another BRAVO Award. Acting Secretary Robert Torres from the Pennsylvania Department of Aging presented the 2019 Innovation BRAVO award for taking a state-level initiative of a Preventative Services calendar, and then developing a BCOA APPRISE calendar with artwork by LIFE Beaver County participants.
The participants and their families were so thrilled with the project that the Beaver County Office on Aging decided to create its own calendar featuring all 12 pieces of artwork along with acknowledgement of each artist. A total of 500 calendars were created and distributed to Life participants and their family members, Life staff, the Beaver County Courthouse, senior centers, partner agencies, recreation centers and the Beaver County Transit Authority. The design of the calendar allowed for the inclusion of information not only about APPRISE and the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act (MIPPA) program but also BCOA programs and services, Life Program, Protective Services, Ombudsman, Farmer’s Market, Senior Centers, Caregiver Support Program, Healthy Steps for Older Adults and transportation services. Jody Kohser, along with Joanne McDermitt, worked diligently to accomplish the task which culminated in a gathering of participants, family and friends in a celebration of this accomplishment.
Jody Kohser and Joanne McDermitt accept the APPRISE BRAVO Award for the Beaver County Office on Aging. The BCOA APPRISE team demonstrated innovation within the program by working on various projects. For the APPRISE calendar initiative, counselor Jody Kohser approached the Life Beaver County Program and forged a partnership where 12 participants each chose a month and created artwork relating to Medicare preventative services or health condition awareness. One participant was chosen for the Pennsylvania Department of Aging 2019 Medicare Preventative Services statewide calendar.
In addition to the calendar, volunteers did other creative things to help the APPRISE program. Volunteer Charles Roberts attends the Center for Hope food distribution site every month where he provides APPRISE counseling. Volunteer Joel Mekler writes informational Medicare articles for a local newspaper. Volunteer Lorraine Rocco especially enjoys the New to Medicare population. Volunteer Kathy Miller provides APPRISE press releases to the local radio, newspaper and Beaver County Senior News. Volunteers Charles Roberts and Luis Gonzales provide APPRISE information as needed while in their additional roles as Tax-Aide volunteers. APPRISE and MIPPA information is provided to all individuals who receive Farmer’s Market vouchers over the summer months.
Center at the Mall is awarded Senior Community Center Grant The Beaver County Office on Aging has been notified by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging that Center at the Mall has been awarded a $42,700 Senior Community Center Grant. Approximately 4,000 older adults visit Center at the Mall, located in the Beaver Valley Mall, each month. As our population ages, the Beaver County Office on Aging realized that we need to enhance the center so that more mobility-disabled participants can attend. It must be more accessible to enter, in addition to being easier and safer to navigate. The project includes enclosing the outside entrance, most frequently used by our most vulnerable members, so that they are covered while waiting for the bus and other transportation; adding a seating area; adding ADA compatible and automatic doors at the entrance; installing security/motion lights outside the door; enhancing the security system; and installing automatic doors at the restrooms to assist those using wheelchairs, walkers, rollators and canes. Linda Hall, Beaver County Office on Aging administrator, commented, “I am very excited that the grant was awarded so our older adults can actively participate in our senior center activities.”
