Carol McClain with her grandchildren, Johnathan (15) and Alli (12).

Darlington senior is advocate of healthy lifestyle and positive life outlook By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News Carol McClain, 70, is a firm believer that life is about choice . . . and the choices we make. “I’m a glass-half-full kind of person,” she says. “I truly try to look at the positive

side of everything. I wake up in the morning and say, ‘I’m alive! I feel great’!’ Yes, there are always struggles in life but your failures are your education to move forward.” Vibrant and very active, this Darlington resident

embodies her philosophy. Retired from a successful 30-year career in the medical field (as an RN and administrator) and a second career in sales, Carol spends time these days volunteering in her community. Continued on page 4

to bake with non-GMO ingredients. I don’t buy boxed anything.” Asked what advice she has for aging healthily, Carol had this to say: “Be grateful! Gratitude is huge. Every evening, I write three to five things that occurred in my day and I say, ‘Thank you, God.’ Take a preventative, proactive approach to life. If you have a sore knee, do something about it. If you’re having a problem with balance, let your PT suggest exercises for you. “Motion is lotion! You have to move. You may not be able to go to the gym but you can do simple things like lifting two cans of soup, walking your dog, or going up and down the steps. “Stay social! Try to be amongst people. Play bingo or cards. Find a buddy and go walking. I didn’t get in bowling until post-retirement. I have been active in Toastmasters International for years

[she is presently the president of the Beaver Chapter and earned the status of Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)] and I have met so many people; plus I get to do my passion of spreading the message about holistic health and eating organically. “Follow the ‘20-20-20’ rule: Read, exercise and meditate. Take one hour out of each day to do 20 minutes of each. Read something motivational and inspirational. “Make a choice! You can choose to awaken and be happy or you can choose to awaken and be sad and miserable. It’s your choice! You can choose to exercise three days or more each week for health or you can choose to sit and watch TV. It’s your choice! You can choose to eat fresh fruits and vegetables or you can choose to eat processed food from a box. It’s your choice! You can choose to get up and go and be social with

other people or you can choose to sit at home and be depressed. It’s your choice!” Most of all, Carol savors spending time with her husband and family, including daughter Amy Lyon-Galvin of Wadsworth, Ohio, son Robert McClain of Ellwood City and their six grandchildren (three boys and three girls). ”We have a camp up in Kennerdale and we go up there, all 12 of us, at least once a month during the summer months. We have a zip line for the children, we make big campfires and go for walks in woods. We also go on a family vacation every year. Last year, we went to the Finger Lakes. This year, we’re all going to Jamaica. “I love my life!” Carol enthuses, adding: … “And I’m just getting started. I truly am! BCSN Carol can be reached at Candlecarol98@ comcast.net.

temperature and may affect sweating. Paying attention to the weather reports and planning your day can be important in helping you stay cool. For instance, plan to do gardening and yard work early in the morning or in the evening when it is cooler.

ummertime in Pennsylvania can be challenging for older adults when the temperature spikes and it becomes oppressively hot. Hot weather can affect older adults as they age, and their bodies do not respond as well to sudden temperature changes. Chronic medical conditions can change a person’s body responses to heat, and prescription medications may impair a body’s ability to regulate

If you have an air conditioner, please use it. Some older adults worry about the electric bill expense but it is more important to stay healthy. Turn your fans on and be sure to open up your doors and windows to circulate air. For those of you who do not have options to cool your home, consider going somewhere during hours when the temperature is high and where you can get relief from the heat. Some options may be to visit the Beaver Valley Mall, a senior center, the library or to a family member or friend’s home who has air conditioning. If the heat causes you to experience symptoms such as breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, intense thirst, weakness, dizziness, cramps that do not go away, nausea and vomiting, seek medical attention. As the old saying goes, “it is better to be safe than sorry.” BCSN

Here are some tips to keep cool: * Drink regularly to prevent dehydration and water is best. * Eat cold meals, and consider salads and fruits which contain water. * Splash some cool water on your face and back of your neck. * Place a cool, damp cloth on the back of your neck. * Place your feet in a pan of cool water. * Take a cold shower. * Have some popsicles in the freezer to eat. * Stay in the shade.
