Friendship Ridge hosts it popular annual carnival Friendship Ridge will host its popular annual carnival from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26 on its grounds in Beaver. Started 43 years ago, it is the largest event for the residents of Friendship Ridge, as well as their friends and family. The evening will include games, entertainment, prizes, food and, of course, plenty of clowns and balloons. All activities are free of charge. Bingo will be sponsored by the St. Vincent DePaul Society, with Friendship Ridge’s staff and Crimson Line Auxiliary providing assistance. Entertainment will be provided by Deuces Wild. A caricature artist will be available for the residents, along with balloon sculptures and face painting. The event is sponsored by the Friendship Ridge Activity Department, and volunteers help to make this a memorable event for the residents. It’s a good volunteer opportunity for youth groups, families and senior projects; volunteers are needed to escort the residents out to the carnival and assist them with games, help in the food and game booths, and dress up as clowns. To inquire, call Mary Eva Shever at (724) 770-3220. Sassy Seniors attest that “spunk, not age” defines the quality of one’s life By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News It’s not the years in your life that count but rather the life in your years. That is the motto of a group of local older adults known as the Sassy Seniors, and they certainly live up to these words. Members of this “entertaining” group can be found singing, dancing, acting, performing comedy skits and much more every month of year, except January and February. “We are similar to a vaudeville troupe and we welcome anyone with an interest in theatre who wants to help out behind the scenes or be on stage,” says Jan Wire of Oakdale, who serves as secretary for the troupe, in addition to performing. “I’m a frustrated Rockette, so I jumped at the opportunity to sing and tap dance,” says Bobbie Guzzo of Moon Township. “The variety in our shows seems to have something for everyone.”

Sassy Seniors can be found livening up the lives of others at a variety of venues around the Beaver County area, including senior residences, nursing homes, church socials and AARP meetings. “We love doing banquets, parties, reunions . . . any type of event, really,” Jan explains. This month alone, the Sassy Seniors have four shows in Aliquippa, Mt. Lebanon and Upper St. Clair. Most performances are scheduled during the afternoon or early evening hours. “A Sassy Seniors performance is a wonderful trip back to the days when we seniors were young,” comments Jeanne Miller of South Park. “The comedy of Jack Benny, Red Skelton and others like them, and the music of Donald O’Connor and Debby Reynolds are memories that have lasted a lifetime.” The idea for the group originated in 1990 at what is now Robert Morris University. “Back then, we were called the
Chuck LeClaire/Beaver County Senior News
Bobbie Guzzo, Reva Roberts and JoAnn Ricci give a show-stopping tap dance. Robert Morris College Independents, and it was for anyone age 55 or older,” Jan comments. “It was a big group, with between 25 and 50 seniors.” In 1997, the Independents split into two separate entities and the core group was renamed The Better Than Ever Independents. “We were called that for a while but we wanted a name that better described us. So last year, we changed our name again to Sassy Seniors.” Along the way, the membership age was lowered to 50 to include more Baby Boomers. Currently, the youngest participant is 60 and the most senior members are 94 and 91. Of the 15 present members, four are men. Participants hail from all parts of the region, such as Bethel Park, South Park, Coraopolis, Crafton and Aliquippa. The commitment to join is minimal and well worth the reward, Jan says. “Each month, we meet at the Presbyterian Church located at 1201 Fifth Avenue in Coraopolis. Our rehearsal schedule varies depending upon the number of upcoming shows, and members pay annual dues of $12.”
Sassy Seniors currently has a goal to expand its participation in the Airport corridor, including (but not limited to) the Ohio River Valley and Allegheny, as well as Beaver and Washington counties. “We are always looking for new members who want to perform. Right now, we are particularly interested in anyone who plays a musical instrument,” Jan says. “But we take anybody who likes to entertain, enjoys being with seniors, is looking for something to do, and is even willing to do some goofy things and have a lot of fun.” JoAnn Ricci of Bethel Park says that she “enjoys this rewarding opportunity to perform, brighten days, lift spirits and bring out the smiles on so many sweet faces.” And one of the group’s oldest members, Reva Roberts, 91, of Aliquippa sums it up this way: “Over the last 20 years I’ve made so many close friends.” BCSN If you are interested in becoming a Sassy Senior, call Betty Dapprich at (412) 367-3093.

Yet consumable goods are not the only things we need to keep in order. For older adults, it is likely that a change in one’s health condition, such as a stroke or broken hip, death of a spouse or a change of caregiver, can require a different type of emergency kit: one with your important papers and information.

t’s never a bad idea to get a weatherrelated emergency kit together in case of flood, fires, storms, tornadoes and landslides. Such a kit should contain nonperishable food and water, as well
Some people do a good job keeping their papers in order and others have documents all over the house. Worst of all, some people do not know where their important papers are located. Make sure you let someone know the location of these papers.

The Ombudsman program helps individuals who have a complaint or problem with any long-term care service. Anyone can make a complaint with the Ombudsman, including consumers of long-term care services, family and staff of long-term care facilities. Referrals can be made in various ways: by telephone, in person at the Beaver County Office on Aging or by letter. Referral sources can remain anonymous. The Ombudsman collects as much information as possible from the person making a complaint. She will ask the person making the referral if anyone has tried to resolve the problem and will explain how the program works. All complaints must be accepted and investigated if they fall within the scope of the Ombudsman program. Investigations start within five working days of the receipt. The Ombudsman cannot check into situations that allege abuse, neglect, exploitation or abandonment. Those complaints, required by law, are investigated by Adult Protective Services. The Ombudsman’s initial contact must be with the consumer to acquire the person’s consent in order to proceed. The consumer is asked to sign a Release of Information, which gives the Ombudsman permission to begin. Since the investigation is consumer-directed, the ombudsman will check back with the consumer to provide updates get the consumer’s input. The consumer may terminate the investigation at any point. The investigation is an objective exploration to find the facts of who, what, where, when, why and how. This is done by observing, contacting other consumers, getting information from staff or family members or reviewing records. The Ombudsman will work with the consumer to develop desired outcomes and will try to negotiate it with the provider of the long-term care service. She will follow up with the consumer afterward to determine if the resolution was implemented. BCSN The Beaver County Office on Aging provides free and confidential Ombudsman services. No-bake haystack cookies
If you need to make some cookies quickly, consider haystacks. There are many variations of this recipe; some people make it on the stovetop while others use the microwave. This one is easy to remember because it has equal amounts of each ingredient. These cookies need to be refrigerated until you eat them; otherwise, the chocolate will get tacky, especially if it is humid or warm outside. 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 1 cup chow mein noodles 1 cup raisins, craisins or other dried fruit Place chocolate chips in a bowl and microwave for one minute. Remove and stir chips. If they are not melted, return to the microwave for 30-second intervals, stirring each time until melted completely. Stir in noodles and fruit until completely coated. Drop by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. Cool then store cookies in the refrigerator until ready to serve. Makes about one dozen cookies. Substitute ingredients to suit your taste. Looking back at Forbes Field By Henry P. Gribbin For Beaver County Senior News
I
n the spring of 1961, about two weeks prior to my seventh birthday, my father took me to my first Pirate baseball game at Forbes Field. With this being my first visit to a ballpark and never having seen the game on television, I had no idea what to expect. I just remember wearing a Pirate warm-up jacket and carrying along my glove. We took the streetcar to the game and got off one block from the park. We walked to the ticket window and my dad bought two tickets; box seats, third base side. When we walked through the gate we were thrust into a dark corridor amid hundreds of people going to and fro. I took hold of my dad’s hand as we wound our way through the crowd.
Photo credit: Image donated by Corbis - Bettmann
When we emerged into the sunlight I was startled by what looked like a sea of bright green grass. There, in left field, was the biggest clock I had ever seen sitting atop a hand-operated scoreboard. During the course of the game, I was fascinated whenever a human arm appeared out of the blue and replaced one number with another.
That particular day, my father and I enjoyed ourselves. When we arrived home, my mother asked how I enjoyed my day. My dad said I like the hotdogs more than I did the game.
Over the years I got to know Forbes Field well. There were certain things about it that always seemed to mesmerize me, such as how the shadows fell across the field, the way cigarette smoke drifted up into the rafters. I liked
The end came for Forbes Field in June of 1970. I was there when the Pirates swept the Cubs in a double-header, the last games played there. Later that summer I drove past Forbes Field with a couple of friends. A gate was open so
we stopped to take a look. The grass was high and the infield overrun with weeds. The park looked bad. We left with the intention of returning with ball and gloves to play catch but we never made it. To this day I regret not going back for our impromptu game. Thinking back, the destruction of that old ballpark signaled the end of my childhood. There would be no more little league games, and it would be 16 years before my father and I would attend another Pirate game together. I miss Forbes Field, and judging from the conversation I’ve had with people who witnessed games there, I am not alone. BCSN

listening to the low, hypnotic murmur of the crowd. But above all I loved the hotdogs sold at Forbes Field. There was something special about them. Perhaps it was the ballpark atmosphere that made them taste so good.

What is a Medicare Supplement Policy, or Medigap?
A
Medicare supplement (Medigap) insurance, sold by private companies, can help pay some of the healthcare costs that Medicare does not cover, like copayments, coinsurance and deductibles. Some Medigap policies also offer coverage for services that Original Medicare does not cover, like medical care when you travel outside the US. If you have Original Medicare and you buy a Medigap policy, Medicare will pay its share of the Medicare-approved amount for covered healthcare costs; then your Medigap policy pays its share. A Medigap policy is different from a Medicare Advantage Plan (HMO or PPO). Those plans are ways to get Medicare benefits, while a Medigap policy only supplements your Original Medicare benefits. Things to know about Medigap policies You must have Medicare Part A and B. If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can apply for a Medigap policy but make sure you can leave the Medicare Advantage Plan before your Medigap policy begins. You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.
June 2013 • Beaver County Senior News

A Medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medigap coverage, you’ll each have to buy separate policies. You can buy a Medigap policy from any insurance company that’s licensed in your state to sell one. Any standardized Medigap policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can’t cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium. Some Medigap policies sold in the past cover prescription drugs but Medigap policies sold after January 1, 2006 are not allowed to include prescription drug coverage. If you want prescription drug coverage, you can join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (Part D). It’s illegal for anyone to sell you a Medigap policy if you have a Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plan. Medicare does not cover everything Medigap policies generally don’t cover long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses or privateduty nursing. The chart below shows basic information about the different benefits Medigap policies cover.

Beaver Falls Circle of Friends relocates to New Brighton The Circle of Friends Community Center has moved to a new location. Formerly located at St. Philomena’s Church on College Hill, the center’s new home is at Holy Family Parish in New Brighton as of June 3. The move is the result of the potential merging and closing of several Catholic churches in the area, according to Circle of Friends executive director Larry Murphy. “We don’t really know how the changes within the Diocese will affect us, so we thought we needed to make a proactive move to assure that our activities and our center won’t be affected,” he comments. The new site has many advantages. “The hall is very easy to get to from the main road and has no steps,” Larry explains. “Participants can enter from the large parking lot, and the hall is air conditioned.” “We really look forward to this new venture and location, and hope many of the people from the surrounding areas will join us,” adds center director Natalie McCargo. “It’s a beautiful site and we have high hopes for it.” Larry and the staff from Circle of Friends thank the church family of St. Philomena’s for their support through the years. “We leave with respect and appreciation to St. Phil’s and we wish them well in whatever the Diocese’s decisions may be.” An open house at the new location is being planned for sometime this summer. Fish cost a fortune Two Virginians go on a fishing trip. They rent all the equipment - the reels, the rods, the wading suits, the rowboat, the car, and even a cabin in the woods. They spent a fortune! The first day they go fishing, but they don’t catch anything. The same thing happens on the second day, and on the third day. It goes on like this until finally, on the last day of their vacation, one of the men catches a fish. As they’re driving home they’re really depressed. One guy turns to the other and says, “Do you realize that this one lousy fish we caught cost us fifteen hundred bucks?” The other guy says, “Wow! Then it’s a good thing we didn’t catch any more!” Purchasing a turkey A lady was picking through the frozen turkeys at the grocery store, but couldn’t find one big enough for her family. She asked a stock boy, “Do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.” Taken from www.ahajokes.com.
