Jeep Heritage Festival celebrates 75th anniversary of the original Jeep vehicle The 2015 Bantam Jeep Heritage Festival is celebrating the 75th birthday of the world’s original Jeep during its fifth annual event to be held from Friday, June 12 to Sunday, June 14.

The event’s planners are calling all Jeep owners to register for the festival’s Guinness World Records

Jeep Parade on Friday, June 12; the parade will begin at 2:30 p.m. On April 26, a Jeep event in Daytona Beach, Florida beat the nationwide festival’s previous record of 1,106 that was set in 2011.

Perhaps Butler County will break that record this year.

Any Jeep model or year can participate. On-site registration will take place from

10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at South Butler Township Fire Hall, located at 98 Old Plank Road. Your Jeep’s VIN number is required to register.

The $15 fee includes a commemorative dash plaque, downloadable photo of each participating Jeep and a commemorative gift.

Jeep Heritage Festival celebrates 75th anniversary of the original Jeep vehicle Continued from page 1 The parade will feature one Jeep for each of the 75 years (1940 to 2015) in the Guinness World Records Parade. Jeeps will stage at Butler County Community College between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. then travel north on Route 8 and through Downtown Butler. Select Jeep vehicles will lead the parade and park together in a designated lot at the north end of the route.

In addition to the Jeep parade, festival events include a Glacial Interpretive Driving Tour on Friday, Muddy 5K and Moraine State Park trail rides on Sunday, hiking at McConnell’s Mill State Park on Friday and Sunday, biking and disc golf at Moraine State Park on Saturday, Dead Fish Polo at Coopers Lake on Sunday, and a Lake Arthur Boat Tour at Moraine State Park on Sunday.

Cranberry Artists Network hosts First Member’s Show

T

he First Member’s Show for the Cranberry Artists Network is scheduled for June 3 to 25 at the Cranberry Township Municipal Building, Rochester Rd., Cranberry Township.

C.A.N. was formed in January of 2014, has sponsored two open shows, but this one is Members Only. The membership has grown to include people from four surrounding counties. C.A.N. just had its spring screening and accepted four new members.

The juror for the show is Elizabeth Asche Douglas of Rochester. She is a retired professor of art from Geneva College and a respected member of the art community in Pittsburgh. Members are displaying two recent works and Elizabeth will be choosing three awards and honorable mentions. The opening reception for the show will be from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 3 and the public is welcome to attend. BCSN

Pennsylvania property tax/rent rebate program applications now available

A

pplication forms for the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program are still available for eligible residents to begin claiming on property taxes or rent paid in 2014. The deadline to apply for a rebate on property taxes or rent paid in 2014 is June 30, so there is still time this month to do so.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanian’s age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older and disabled persons over the age of 18. The income limit for the program is $35,000 annually for homeowners and up to $15,000 annually for renters, with half of Social Security income excluded.

Each resident who prepared and filed a paper application last year, and did not utilize computer software to do so, should have received a 2014 application form by February 30. Renters who prepared claims last year using computer software rather than the PA-1000 booklet received letters by mail reminding the resident to apply for a 2014 rebate, and providing them with two copies of the PA-1000 Rent Certificate and Rent Rebate application.

Applications are also available online at www.revenue.state. pa.us or by calling (888) 222-9190.

Older adults must reapply for rebates every year because rebates are based on annual income and property taxes or rent paid each year.

It costs nothing to apply for a rebate. Application forms and assistance are available at no cost from the Department of Revenue

district officers, state legislators’ offices and locally through the Butler County Area Agency on Aging (Butler County AoA).

The Butler County AoA will be hosting mobile application sites at various county senior centers, as well as in-office at their main location at 111 Sunnyview Circle in Butler.

Rebates will be distributed beginning on July 1, as specified by law. It is recommended that interested applicants make an appointment ahead of time by calling Butler County AoA at (724) 282-3008.

More than $297 million in property tax and rent rebates have been sent to more than 587,000 homeowners and renters across the state for taxes and rent paid in 2013.

The department wants all eligible Pennsylvanian’s to apply for and receive rebates through this program, but cautions that fraudulent or falsified rebate claims will result in a denial of rebate.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is supported by the Pennsylvania Lottery and revenue from slots gaming. Since the program’s 1971 inception, older adults and adults with disabilities have received $5.4 billion in property tax and rent rebates.

Farmers Market voucher distribution sites

I

t’s growing season once again!

Eligible Butler County residents ages 60 and older may now receive their Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers. Individuals receive four $5 vouchers per season, and married couples receive eight $5 vouchers per season.

FMNP vouchers are distributed by the Butler County Area Agency on Aging.

(There is an income eligibility component, but information for this year has not yet been released.) All income must be tallied; for example, wages, Social Security, pensions, VA benefits, interest and withdrawals from annuities.

Seniors residing in facilities such as nursing homes, personal care homes or domiciliary care homes where meals are prepared are not eligible to receive vouchers.

Stem cells may be the next penicillin

At the turn of the 20th Century, biologists discovered that some cells in the body had not yet been assigned as a certain type of cell. The use of these cells to treat diseases traces back to 1968 when the first bone marrow transplant was performed.

The result of placing healthy stem cells into a sick individual’s body is the creation of healthy blood cells that are not infected. In turn, these cells replace the diseased ones and start to heal the patient.

Today, a clinic called the Lung Institute is using adult stem cells from the patient’s own fat, blood or bone marrow to provide similar

hances are that you have heard about stem cells, but did you know that stem cells are being used right now in the United States to treat debilitating lung diseases? With advancements in the study of stem cells, the question is posed: are stem cells the next penicillin? Stem cells and

penicillin come from humble beginnings, they are both used to treat life-threatening conditions, and just like penicillin, stem cell biologists have won Nobel Prizes for their discoveries. Penicillin, originally discovered in 1928 by the Scottish biologist, Sir Alexander Fleming, did not see its full potential until WWII. It wasn’t until 1945, that Sir Fleming received the Nobel Prize.

What was the problem before?

Taxiing down the tarmac, the jetliner abruptly stopped, turned around and returned to the gate.

After an hour-long wait, it finally took off.

A concerned passenger asked the flight attendant, “What was the problem?”

“The pilot was bothered by a noise he heard in the engine,” explained the Flight Attendant, “and it took us a while to find a new pilot.”

Flying without a parachute A man jumps out of an airplane with a parachute on his back. As he’s falling, he realizes hiss chute is broken. He doesn’t know anything about parachutes, but as the earth rapidly approaches, he realizes his options are limited; he takes off the parachute and tries to fix it himself on the way down. The wind is ripping past his face, he’s dropping like a rock, and at 5000 feet, another man goes shooting up past him. In desperation, the man with the chute looks up and yells, “Hey do you know anything about parachutes?!”
