day. To become eligible, you must and fill out a brief application (it can be downloaded online at BCTA. com), take it to the Rochester Transportation Center and present proof of age. Once your eligibility is established, you will receive a Free Senior Transit Identification Card. Each time you ride with BCTA, simply show this ID card to the bus driver upon boarding. This same card can also be used to receive reduced fare transportation on BCTA’s DART system (see below) and is valid on all transit systems in Pennsylvania, so it can be used when visiting Pittsburgh or traveling across the state.

March 2018 • Beaver County Senior News

4

In lieu of a Free Senior Transit ID card, BCTA also accepts a government-issued proof of age documents showing date of birth (such as a driver’s license, nondriver ID card or passport) to establish eligibility for free travel. These documents must be presented to the driver as you board. Be aware that this accommodation may not apply outside of Beaver County, so check with the other transit system(s) you plan to ride with before embarking on your trip. Also please note that if you do not present your transit card or a valid proof of age, you may be required to pay the full fare. For riders with disabilities, as well as seniors with limited mobility, BCTA offers a wide range of accommodations to make travel more convenient, safe and comfortable, including lift-equipped vehicles, kneeling and low-floor vehicles, passenger assistance, designated seats for seniors, an armband program for the visually impaired, stop announcements and a telecommunications device for the hearing impaired (TDD). For information about BCTA’s services, call (724) 728-8600 or visit BCTA.com.

BCTA’s DART The Demand and Response Transit (DART) service is BCTA’s door-todoor, advance-reservation, sharedride system. It is operated in both urban and rural areas of Beaver County. This service is available to the general public, seniors, persons with disabilities, and others with specialized transportation needs to and from any point in Beaver County that cannot be reached by using the regular fixed route buses. Connections to BCTA fixed routes can also be made upon request. There is a charge for the service but adults ages 60 and older and those with ADAestablished disabilities (verified by

your doctor) ride at a very reduced rate (half fare). Urban portions of Beaver County are served by DART Monday through Saturday, while trips to and from rural portions of Beaver County can be made Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. When riding DART, there is no restriction on trip purpose, and no type of trip is given priority over another in the scheduling process. The daily routes and schedules of service vary each day in response to the demand expressed for service to and from certain points. All trips are scheduled by advanced reservation only. For trip reservations, questions or concerns related to DART, call (724) 375-2895 or (800) 262-0343.

Medical Assistance Transportation Program (MATP)

In Beaver County, the MATP Program is administered through the Beaver County Transit Authority, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services. MATP provides non-emergency medical transportation to Beaver County residents who hold a valid Pennsylvania Medical Assistance (MA) card. It is intended to offer transportation or mileage reimbursement to those who need to access medical care or other medical services from Medical Assistance providers. These other services include therapies, tests, dental visits, trips to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions, mental health treatment, drug and alcohol addiction treatment, and trips to medical equipment suppliers. MATP cannot be used for emergency or

ambulance transportation, nonmedical trips such as shopping and social activities, or to obtain medical care not covered by Medical Assistance. Depending on your origin and destination, your specific needs,

and the costs involved, MATP can provide by public fixed-route bus, shared-ride, lift-equipped vehicles, or mileage reimbursement when your own vehicle is used.

Need transportation around Beaver County? Consider these public and private options for getting where you need to go Continued from page 5 Super Shuttle to Pittsburgh International Airport If you need to get to or from Pittsburgh International Airport and cannot drive or do not want to leave your car at an airport parking lot, consider reserving an airport shuttle or black car from Pittsburgh Transportation Group. This privately owned company offers non-stop van, black car and SUV service from anywhere in Beaver County to the airport. Certain zip codes within the county also offer “shared-ride” van service, which is priced much lower; those areas are 15061, 15001,15042, 15005 and 15003. For special occasions (like a family wedding) or for groups (like up to 40 people from your church taking a daily outing to a show downtown), Pittsburgh Transportation Group also offers ExecuCar, bus and luxury vehicles service To learn more or to schedule service, call (412) 444-4444 or visit pghtrans. com. Do you have a mobile phone and feel comfortable using apps? Then consider using one of these two popular ride services on your next trip across town, downtown or wherever you might otherwise take a taxi. One tap on your phone and a car comes directly to you. Your driver knows exactly where to go. Lyft provides safe rides 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to all points around the Pittsburgh area, including Beaver County, as well as to Pittsburgh International Airport. The Lyft app matches you with friendly local drivers at the tap of a button within minutes. After the ride, simply pay through your phone. To learn more, visit Lyft.com/cities/ pittsburgh-pa. Uber is another option. The Uber pp connects you with a reliable ride (from low cost to Premium) in minutes through your smartphone. Payment is completely cashless and tipping is not required. Applicable tolls and surcharges may be added to your fare. To learn more, visit uber.com/cities/Pittsburgh. If you have any issues with either of these ride services, you can file a complaint through the PA Public Utility Commission’s Bureau of Consumer Services at (800) 692-7380.

When to Stop Driving We want to continue driving as long as we can do so safely. For many of us, however, the time may come when we must limit or stop driving—either temporarily or permanently. The following advice may be able to assist you or a loved one in making this decision. What are the warning signs when someone should begin to limit driving or stop altogether? 4

Feeling uncomfortable, nervous or fearful while driving.

4

Dents and scrapes on the car or on fences, mailboxes, garage doors and curbs.

4

Difficulty staying in the lane of travel.

4

Getting lost.

4

Trouble paying attention to signals, road signs and pavement markings.

4

Slower response to unexpected situations.

4

Medical conditions or medications that may affect your ability to handle the car safely.

4

Frequent “close calls” (almost crashing).

4

Trouble judging gaps in traffics at intersections and on highway entrance/ exit ramps.

4

Other drivers honking at you and instances when you are angry at other drivers.

4

Friends or relatives not wanting to drive with you.

4

Difficulty seeing the sides of the road when looking straight ahead.

4

Easily distracted or having difficulty concentrating while driving.

4

Having a hard time turning around to check over your shoulder while backing up or changing lanes.

4

Frequent traffic tickets or warnings by traffic/law enforcement officers in the last year or two.

If you notice one or more of these warning signs, you may want to have your driving assessed by a professional or attend a driver refresher class (see listing or download the booklet mentioned next column, which lists more driver refresher courses). You may also want to consult with your doctor if you are having unusual concentration or memory problems, or other physical symptoms that may be affecting your ability to drive. Source: AARP.org.

Other resources are available to help older drivers stay safe AARP Driver Safety Program The AARP Driver Safety Program is the nation’s first and largest classroom refresher course for drivers ages 50 and older. The eight-hour course is designed to help update driving skills and knowledge of the rules of the road, learn about normal age-related physical changes and how they impact driving, and obtain an insurance discount. Online courses are also available. To learn more and to locate classes in your area, visit the above website and type “Driver Safety Program” in the search box. Call (888) 227-7669 or visit aarp.org. Seniors for Safe Driving This driver improvement program is designed especially for seniors. It allows drivers a chance to refresh their driving techniques, develop positive driving attitudes and regain lost confidence. There is no written exam or behind-the-wheel test. A nominal tuition fee is charged. Call for class locations, dates and times. Call (724) 283-0245 or (800) 559-4880 or visit seniorsforsafedriving.com

to register or for more information. A Guide to Talking With Older Drivers The Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles has a very useful booklet called Talking With Older Drivers: A Guide for Family and Friends that helps family members and friends know when and how to get involved in an older person’s decision on whether to continue or modify their driving. The booklet can be downloaded online. Go to dmv.pa.gov/Driver-Services/MatureDrivers/Pages/default.aspx.

Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors Beaver County Office on Aging

Surmising the future: What’s ahead for older adults in the coming decades Some are claiming that travel by driverless vehicles eventually will become safer as the human element will be taken out. Just imagine, older adults could continue to get to their medical appointments and shopping trips easier. Perhaps you may not ambulate well but would be able to send your car out to the pharmacy and supermarkets, and employees could load your order into your vehicle, and then it will drive back to your home. Maybe a relative can send their car to the older adult’s home to pick the person up and then drop them off at the doctor’s office and then come back to take the person home. Sometimes there are no parking places nearby. This technology may allow you to get out of the vehicle at your destination, and then the car will park elsewhere and be summoned back when you are ready to leave.

D

o you ever wonder what’s ahead for older adults in the future? How will technology and inventions affect our lives? Advances in medicine from the past few decades have lengthened our life span as more people are living into their 90’s and even reaching 100. It’s looking like advances in transportation may be coming, and it could benefit older adults to provide them continued independence. Many people live with medical limitations, such as rheumatoid arthritis, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, a broken hip, among more, and a self-driving vehicle may provide an opportunity to use their automobile longer. Recently, there has been a multitude of stories in the media about numerous companies, including some in nearby Pittsburgh, developing and testing self-driving cars, also known as autonomous vehicles. Companies including but not limited to Uber, Argo AI, Ford, Delphi, Aurora Innovation, Audi, Tesla and Waymo are at the ground level testing out this technology. It sounds so futuristic as some vehicles may not have a steering wheel, or gas or brake pedals. The test vehicles have computers plus many cameras and sensors installed to help it travel with other vehicles on the road.

There are lots of questions to this potential new way of travelling. Would we buy the vehicle? Would we be willing to ride in it without a human being able to control it? Would we trust it? How would the vehicle know that we are safely out of the car and got all of belongings out of it before it drove away? Will it get you to the correct place? Would it get you to Market Street in Beaver as opposed to Market Street in Bridgewater? What happens when someone or something wrecks into it? What happens when the self-driving vehicle wrecks? If you need a break while riding on the turnpike, are you able to get the vehicle to get off at the rest stop? Since there will be a computer in the vehicle, can it be hacked? What can happen if it gets hacked? What happens if the vehicle is stolen? These are all things that will need to be figured out in the years to come. Then you have to wonder if there will be a loss of jobs with people who drive taxis, busses and trucks. Some of us already ride in unmanned vehicles, such as trams/trains in airports or in tourist areas. It will be only a matter of time, and some of us are going to live long enough to be riding in this newest form of transportation. BCSN

Some feel that it may be 10 years or more until these driverless vehicles are safe enough to be used regularly. Others in this industry surmise that the general public may not be able to afford the vehicle, and customers would need to arrange for a ride from transportation companies who may have the resources to purchase a fleet of these vehicles.

Here are a few examples of how this program is helping caregivers keep their loved ones at home. George Jones lives with his wife who has Alzheimer’s. He has been paying for her to attend an Adult Daily Living Center in a nearby town once a week so she can have socialization and he can have some respite. He also pays for an aide to come several times each week to help bath his wife. He purchases pullups as his wife doesn’t always make it to the bathroom. Every month he submits receipts to his Care Manager, Leslie. When he spends $500, he receives a check for $450. Reimbursement is based on household income and he is reimbursed at 90 percent of up to $500.

* Daylight Savings Time will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, March 11. Be sure to spring ahead and turn your clocks ahead one hour Saturday night before you go to bed! * This month we observe: March 17, St. Patrick’s Day; March 20, Spring begins; March 25, Palm Sunday; March 30, Good Friday. BCSN

H

elp us spread the word about a wonderful program called the Caregiver Support Program (CSP). CSP focuses on supporting the caregiver as they provide care for their loved one in the home. It provides reimbursement to the caregiver for costs they incur purchasing services, supplies, assistive devices and home modifications for their loved one. CSP also provides educational materials, benefits counseling, an annual caregiver recognition luncheon and Care Management support. CSP reimburses the caregiver after they utilize their own funds to purchase the care needed and submit receipts to their Care Manager confirming this. It does not pay the caregiver to provide care for their loved ones and is not an entitlement program.

News You Can Use

Tess Murray cares for her older brother, Jim, who has had a stroke. She hires a neighbor to come and sit with him three nights a week so she can continue with her volunteer work. She pays for an aide from an agency to come and help with bathing each morning. Tess has purchased a stair glide he uses to get up to the second floor. She submits receipts for $300 and receives a check for $300. She is reimbursed at 100 percent based on their income. She paid $1,800 for the stair glide and received a check for $1,800. This was in addition to her monthly reimbursement. All caregivers have the opportunity to make use of a lifetime allotment of $2,000 for reimbursement of assistive devices and home modifications. Each care plan is individualized and unique to the caregiver situation. Because funds are available, we are seeking caregivers to reimburse. If you are a caregiver and would like to apply for this program, we urge you to call us. If you know a caregiver who would benefit from this program, please share this information with them. We want to get the word out so we can help as many caregivers as we can. Surprises for Shut-ins wraps up its 31st season

It was another successful season for the Beaver County Office on Aging’s Surprises for Shut-ins program. During December, 464 older adults received bags of gifts and friendly visits during the holiday. BCOA would like to thank all the people and organizations who donated items and financial contribution for our agency to purchase reusable cloth gift bags, gifts and wrapping supplies. We were so honored that Elmcroft of Chippewa earmarked proceeds of its annual Christmas Wonderland to benefit our program. There were many dedicated volunteers who came to wrap gifts three days at Center at the Mall, and six people helped assemble all the bags. More than 25 volunteers plus BCOA staff delivered the gifts to some excited and appreciative recipients. It is a big project, and our agency is appreciative that so many people in the community participate each year. BCSN

Get your eyes checked! I bumped into an old school friend at the store today. He started showing off, talking about his well paid job and expensive sports cars. Then he pulled out his phone and showed me a photo of his wife and said, “She’s beautiful, isn’t she?” I said, “If you think she’s gorgeous, you should see my girlfriend.” He said, “Why? Is she a stunner?” I said, “No, she’s an optometrist.” Timing is everything A boy asks his father, “Dad, are bugs good to eat?” “That’s disgusting. Don’t talk about things like that over dinner,” the dad replies. After dinner the father asks, “Now, son, what did you want to ask me?” “Oh, nothing,” the boy says. “There was a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.” Be careful what you ask A man goes to the lawyer: “What is your fee?” Lawyer says: “$1000 for three questions.” Man: “Wow - so much! Isn’t it a bit expensive?” Lawyer: “Yes, what is your third question?”
