Keen-Age News . . . For Beaver County’s Active Seniors Beaver County Office on Aging
Don’t sit yourself to death! Get up and get moving Dr. James Levine, co-director and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic/Arizona State University, is a leading researcher of how inactivity affects our long-term health: “Sitting is more dangerous than smoking, kills more people than HIV and is more treacherous than parachuting.” A sedentary lifestyle can increase the risk of illnesses such as heart disease, Type II diabetes and obesity. This affects people in all age groups and those who work or are retired. The solution is simple. Get up and move. There are plenty of activities in Beaver County starting this month through late fall to encourage you to keep moving. Beaver County History Weekend is May 5-6. All the historical sites in the county are open for you to tour. Our senior centers have fitness centers and fitness classes to keep you going.
By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
D
ecades ago in Beaver County, many industrial jobs and activities did not require people to sit all day. Many people were able to walk to work, activities and church, too. In our modern world, sitting ourselves to death is very real as we drive to work, sit at a desk in front of a computer for a shift, drive home and eventually sit on the couch to watch television before going to bed. Even our hobbies of crafting, reading and attending sporting events require lots of sitting.
Many local communities have Memorial Day parades that you enjoy while commemorating a day of remembrance for those who have died serving our country. You can walk to the parade route and to some of the programs scheduled at local cemeteries. Take advantage of walking in our county parks at Brady’s Run, Economy and Brush Creek as they officially open May 25. Throughout the summer, there are lots of car cruises in Ambridge, Beaver, Beaver Falls and New Brighton. Take the time to stroll and admire the cars. There are tons of festivals throughout the year. Check for all dates and details at visitbeavercounty.com. Get up, get out and get moving. It’s good for your health and a great opportunity to have lots of fun. BCSN

hat’s the surest way to get great nutrition in your diet? Eat fresh fruits and vegetables! They provide a plethora of vitamins, fiber and minerals to keep you healthy and even stave off some chronic diseases. They’re also easy on the waistline.
Here in Beaver County, we are fortunate to have an abundance of produce during the peak growing season, which runs from June through late August. The Beaver County Office on Aging will once again be distributing Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) vouchers this year. FMNP provides resources to adults ages 60 and older who are nutritionally at risk in the form of fresh, nutritious and unprepared fruits and vegetables from farmers markets. To qualify, you must live in Beaver County and meet income requirements, based on total household income:

Engage at Every Age! . . . at this month’s Day at the Mall Health and History Fair
M
ay is Older Americans Month, and the Administration for Community Living’s theme for the celebration is Engage at Every Age! It emphasizes that you are never too old or young to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental and emotional well being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities. The Beaver County Office on Aging is hosting its annual Day at the Mall Health and History Fair from 10 a.m. to noon on May 9 in the corridor of the Beaver Valley Mall, by Center at the Mall and Hallmark. The event is an opportunity to be proactive with your health and learn about local history.
Numerous vendors will provide information on senior services and programs. Many screenings will be offered, including blood pressure. Area museums and historical groups will be on hand to present information on their sites and local history. WBVP-WMBA radio will broadcast live from the event, and they will bring the ever-popular Personality Prize Wheel. Upon registration, guests will receive a small gift while supplies last. Winners of door prizes from Day at the Mall will be announced at 1 p.m. Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
Sveti Nikola, a Croatian music ensemble, will perform from noon to 1 p.m. inside Center at the Mall. It features string instrumentalists and singers performing a variety of folk music and perform several kolo (circle) dances. To go along with the Croatian entertainment, a Croatianthemed lunch will be served inside Center at the Mall. It will feature stuffed cabbage, whipped potatoes, mixed beans, wheat bread and apple pie. To make a lunch reservation, call (724) 774-5654. BCSN The event, sponsored by the Beaver County Office on Aging and premier sponsors Medic Rescue and Concordia Visiting Nurses, is the number one resource for personal, on-the-spot consultation and information for older adults all in one convenient location. For more information, call the Beaver County Office on Aging at (724) 847-2262 or (88) 548-2262.
Caregiver Support Program helps caregivers Are you a caregiver? Are you caring for a loved one and privately paying for in home help? Do you need help with the costs you incur purchasing services, supplies, assistive devices and home modifications while taking care of your loved one?

Consider getting information about the Caregiver Support Program. This program provides monthly reimbursement, benefits counseling, access to a library of educational materials and the ongoing support of a care manager. Each year, the program sponsors a recognition luncheon for caregivers that includes guest speakers, prizes, gift cards and entertainment. Verification of income and assets is part of the assessment and helps to determine the amount of reimbursement available. Sometimes applicants think that the Caregiver program will pay them for the work they do, but this is not possible. Caregivers cannot receive payment of any kind for the care they provide. The program reimburses the unpaid primary caregiver for costs they expend to purchase approved services and supplies for the care receiver.
May 2018 • Beaver County Senior News
If you think you might benefit or if you know a caregiver who might benefit from this program, share this information with them. All you have to do is call the Information and Referral Department at the Beaver County Office on Aging at (724) 847-2262 or (888) 548-2262. Let them know that you would like to have a home visit and assessment to determine how this program can help you and your loved one. BCSN

What better way to welcome the upcoming spring and summer seasons than by getting out in the community and exploring new activities? Why not consider joining our team of Ombudsman volunteers to make a difference for those in need? Beaver County residents who live in nursing homes and personal care homes need an Ombudsman to advocate for them. Ombudsmen visit with residents and empower them by exploring ways they can work to resolve problems. Ombudsman volunteers may attend resident council meetings and exit surveys. Some volunteers may even provide training to residents, staff and family members and community organizations. Many residents seldom have outside visitors and the Ombudsman provides an important contact for them. You are helping them just by listening. You are confirming that they are important and they matter. You are making a difference! Ombudsman volunteers receive training and work closely with staff. Ongoing support is provided along with regularly scheduled meetings. Volunteer assignments are customized to the volunteer’s availability preference and skills. Safe to swim here? While sports fishing off the Florida coast, a tourist capsized his boat. He could swim, but his fear of alligators kept him clinging to the overturned craft. Spotting and old beachcomber standing on the shore, the tourist shouted,”Are there any gators around here?!” “Naw,” the man hollered back, “they ain’t been around for years!” “Feeling safe, the tourist started swimming leisurely toward the shore. About halfway there he asked the guy,”How’d you get rid of the gators?” “We didn’t do nothin’,” the beachcomber said. “The sharks got ‘em.” Say it with a card Recently seen on a birthday card...
