called Hosanna Industries is available to individuals in the Pittsburgh region who may need a helping hand, as well as to those who want to offer a hand to others. Officially started on Palm Sunday in 1990 during a worship service at First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, the nonprofit has steadily grown to include 13 buildings in two locations in Beaver and Allegheny counties, and has served an increasing number of community residents during that time.

Its expansion took a leap forward in 1998, when Hosanna Industries moved from Bakerstown to its current headquarters in Rochester/ New Sewickley Township, Beaver County (close to Cranberry Township, Butler County). “We call it a ‘Holy Hook-up’ as to how the Lord led us to this location,” explains Becky Hetzer, who has been a mission worker with Hosanna Industries since 1996. “We had outgrown our Bakerstown space and were looking to build a larger facility to accommodate our

growth. Through a friend of a friend, we were led to the Rinard Lane campus where we found exactly what we were looking for: a volunteer dormitory, chapel, an office, warehouse space, a maintenance garage and staff housing. It was a dream come true! We have worked hard to update each building, add new structures and make the facility functional and beautiful.” The Rochester campus is also the site for Hosanna Industries’ construction services and home repair Continued on page 3

purchase it so we could expand our services to those in need.” The site of a former arts nonprofit, the Gibsonia facility concentrates on the aesthetic arts, such as wood working, ceramics, enameling and more. program. Through this program, volunteers remodel existing low-income homes for needy families and build new homes for families in need. For qualifying households, volunteer staff turn around the construction of new homes in one week. These “Blitz Builds” are made possible not just with volunteer labor but also donated and discounted materials and goods, and a uniquely organized building method that compresses the build time into seven days. The Rochester location also has a Trade Skill Learning Center where individuals and groups can learn about the construction trades, and ready themselves for being part of a “Blitz Build” team. “We orient and teach volunteer groups the specific skills needed for the week ahead,” Becky notes. “We have also taught many at-risk youth from the City of Pittsburgh in this building, and we’ve taught smaller church groups who are planning mission trips and want to familiarize themselves with construction skills before they embark on their trip.” In 2015, Hosanna Industries expanded farther by purchasing eight acres in Gibsonia, Richland Township. “This was another blessing to the mission,” Becky comments. “We weren’t really looking to acquire another property, but our board president discovered the property for sale and felt led to

Hosanna Industries is always in need of volunteers of all ages and skill levels. “Last year, we led over 1,000 volunteers from all over the country,” Becky says. “Our summer months fill the volunteer dormitory with junior and senior high students who come to serve with their youth groups. During other months of the year, we lead business groups, retirees and many others who want to serve with us in our daily work at the mission.”

Hosanna Industries’ headquarters is located at 109 Rinard Lane in Rochester. To learn more, call (724) 770-0262 or visit hosannaindustries.org. Hosanna Industries’ Client Application Process If you are in need of home repairs or a new home or know someone who is, consider applying for help through Hosanna Industries. Follow these steps to do so: • Call (724) 770-0262 and ask for Amy or Ed. • You will be asked: number of persons living in household, whether or not you plan to stay in your home for the next five years, your needs, proof of income and proof of home ownership. • You will receive a phone call to set up an inspection of your property by the construction crew. • After the inspection is satisfactorily completed, you will be placed on the project list.

Funding for the mission comes from many sources, including individuals, churches, businesses, foundations and fundraisers. The wait list for the mission’s home repair program is typically always longer than what their staff can accomplish in a year. Needy homeowners find the program through various referral agencies, such as the United Way, 411 Helpline, and local Area Agency on Aging. About half of the waiting list consists of seniors. “Our reputation has spread through word of mouth and the phone never stops ringing,” Becky comments. Still, Becky encourages anyone to apply. To do so, see the criteria on this page.

Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin

Q& A By Joanne McDermitt, APPRISE Coordinator Beaver County Office on Aging

Question: When should I signup for Medicare? Answer: It is important not to confuse your age for Social Security benefits with the qualifying age for Medicare. In most cases, you can apply for Social Security Benefits at age 62; however, this is not the case for Medicare. Medicare benefits usually don’t start until age 65. The ideal time to signup for Medicare is during your initial enrollment period that is the three months before your 65th birthday, your birthday month and three months after your 65th birthday. Question: How do I signup for Medicare?

Enroll online at socialsecurity.gov/medicareonly or call Social Security at (800) 772-1213 (TTY users 800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Another option is to visit your local Social Security office. If you are already collecting Social Security, you may be automatically signed up for Medicare. Question: What is APPRISE? You can use... New Beginnings at the Beaver County Senior Gardens By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor, Beaver County Office on Aging

Spring is here, and new

growth is popping out of the soil. New things are happening at the Beaver County Senior Gardens on Western Avenue in Brighton Township, too. There is a new sponsor for the gardens, Brighton First, Inc. The agency sponsors overseas mission trips to Russia and the Dominican Republic along with Native American projects. Locally, the agency is doing projects with the NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Building, and rehabilitating a building on Brighton Avenue in Rochester for a community kitchen, community theater and space for outreach programs. Brighton First’s board of directors felt that sponsorship of the gardens would be a good fit for its organization.

optional cost to utilize water at the site. The Senior Gardens have built up throughout the years to be a vibrant, community garden. In addition to the gardens plots, there are several water sources, compost bins, benches, sheds, pavilions, portable toilets and parking.

The Beaver County Office on Aging helps out each year with some funds to cover the cost of tilling and for some projects to benefit the gardens. For 2019, the Senior Gardens Committee looks forward to creating a raised bed garden area. The raised beds would be 4 x 8 feet and are good for seniors who want to garden in a small area with little maintenance. The raised beds will be filled with top soil. Grass will be planted around the beds for easy movement and less weeds. Several raised beds will be available at the beginning of the gardening season. During mid-summer, the Summer Youth Corp of Job Training for Beaver County will help construct and paint more raised bed gardens.

SPOTLIGHT on Senior Concerns

Beaver County Sports Shorts:

Physical therapy can help ease shoulder pain By Dale Reckless PT

Shoulder pain can be caused by

a variety of problems. Some of the common causes are rotator cuff injuries, shoulder impingement and adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder). In fact, research shows that physical therapy should be your first stop when having shoulder pain or problems relating to your shoulder and in many cases can prevent the need for surgery, narcotics or injections.

MRS Physical Therapy designs a specialized treatment program to correct the underlying problem so you are no longer in pain and are able to return the activity that you were doing without any pain. The exercises will focus on increasing flexibility in certain muscles and improving strength in specific muscles. Your rotator cuff is complex and the problems typically do not just go away on their own. Treatment usually requires physical therapy 2-3 times a week for 3-4 weeks depending on each individual’s needs.

The rotator cuff is a complex group of muscles in your shoulder that allows a great amount of mobility so that you can reach high and low, carry and lift, push and pull and even to throw a ball. Some people will wake up with the pain and not have an event that specifically caused their shoulder pain while others can relate their current pain to an old or new injury.

Approximately one in five adults in the United States

experience a mental illness. This health issue touches almost every family in every neighborhood across the country. The grey building at 1229 Third Ave., Beaver is home to a nonprofit that his helping to battle this health crisis: NAMI Beaver County, the local affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness. NAMI is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to providing advocacy, education and support to those suffering the effects of mental illness. Education and fighting stigma are two of NAMI’s goals. Beaver County NAMI was founded in the early 1990s by three dynamic and dedicated Beaver County women: Ann Bau, Marge Kern, and Connie Roman. This affiliate focuses on the needs of consumers and family members. It is not uncommon to see aging parents with an older child who has a serious mental illness, or parents with a child or teenager who is showing signs of mental illness.

Direct Cremation $790 This charge for direct cremation without any attendant rights or ceremonies includes:

• Removing the deceased person from any place of death within Allegheny County and transporting the deceased person to the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. (Slight additional fee for other areas & home deaths.) • Consulting with the appropriate family member(s) or legal guardian at the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. to acquire necessary vital statistics and authorizations. • Sheltering the remains for a 24 hour period (required by law) prior to performing the cremation. • Performing the cremation on site. (Additional fee for obesity) • Placing the cremated remains in a simple container. • Presenting the cremated remains to the appropriate family member(s) or legal guardian at the Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. The concerns of a family requesting direct cremation are simple-the cremation should be performed in a timely and dignified manner, under the supervision of a professional funeral director, and at a fair cost. The Thomas M. Smith Funeral Home & Crematory Ltd. is committed to satisfying these concerns, and we welcome the opportunity to be of service. Call us if you have any questions or wish to make arrangements.

Family and cultural dynamics often determine how family and friends react to mental illness. NAMI’s Family to Family program is offered without charge in the spring and fall. Trained instructors teach one lesson a week for 12 weeks to help family members cope with this issue. Parents, siblings, spouses, adult sons and daughters, partners and significant others are all welcome to participate. The nonprofit also hosts the Peer to Peer program, a free eightweek class that focuses on navigating life with a mental illness. This program is typically held in September. Beaver County NAMI also sponsors a support group called NAMI Connections. Meetings take place every Tuesday from noon to 1:30 p.m. and a light lunch is served. Other regular support group meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, and at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of every month (for partners of people with Borderline Personality Disorder). To learn more about NAMI Beaver County’s Family to Family or Peer to Peer classes, call (724) 888-6877 or email rmattia@namibeavercounty.org. If you have an emergency related to mental illness, call 911.
