To qualify for Aging Waiver, you must be a Pennsylvania resident age 60 and older, meet the level of care needs for a skilled nursing facility home and meet financial requirements as determined by the local county assistance office. Once you qualify, you are able to choose the service providers that you deem worth to assist you. CBSC’s trained service coordinators can help you navigate and select services, then develop a plan to set up and organize those services on your behalf. What kinds of services are available? o you remember the cartoon “The Jetsons”? George Jetson and his family lived in a futuristic environment set in the year 2060. They zipped around in a flying saucer with a bubble over it. Do you think that’s the future for our transportation? Cars have come a long way with technology. Now they can beep when you are backing up and are getting too close to something behind you. They can parallel park without you steering. Phone calls and text messages can come through the radio. What does the future hold? Well, I read that by 2020, there’s a possibility that we will have flying vehicles. I’m not sure that’s for me. I drive an Impala, and it does have some of the newer bells and whistles, including Sirius radio, OnStar and phone capabilities. For right now I’m comfortable leaving the flying to airplane pilots. * If you have a cell phone, wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to worry

about charging it daily? I wonder if the future holds a better way for charging cell phones, such as solar charged phones. Now only if there was enough sunshine! Or it would be great to have a cell phone that does not need to be charged at all. Better yet, I wish cell phones could be used worldwide without paying extra fees for roaming charges, data and overage charges. Nevertheless, the convenience and speed of a cell phone sure does beat the old rotary dial phones. * Many of you have an iPad or a computer. I have a laptop computer, but wouldn’t it be great if our computers would quietly update the programs on the computer without telling us “ready for install” or asking us “do you want to install this program now?” The pop-up boxes have weird messages that are hard to understand and are sometimes scary because they can say “warning this might contain a virus.” These updates and warnings can be exhausting! Computers, iPads, cell phones and tablets are here to stay, and I think, the future holds even more electronic advances. Let’s hope they become simpler. * Have you looked at your cable bill lately? Wow! It can be costly and yet we don’t even get all the channels. We

should be able to select all the channels that we want. I would select some of the Italian, travel, DIY and home decorating channels and eliminate so many sports and news channels. Wouldn’t you like the opportunity to make your own channel selections in the future? * What I really want is slower growing grass! If you have a yard, you probably wish for the same thing. It would make me happy to only have to cut the grass just once a month. Oops, I should say my retired friend would be happy if he only had to cut my grass once or twice a summer. Maybe the future holds a product to slow down grass growing. It would be the opposite of the product Miracle Grow, which I use in my garden. I’m keeping my fingers crossed! What do older adults want for the future? Most likely your answers will vary greatly. Maybe you hope for faster airplane flights or more nonstop flights to visit family around the country and the world. One person told me that she would like to have tour groups with everyone over age 70 so the pace of the trip could be a bit slower. I thought that was an excellent idea. All of our wishes generally depend on people who come up with crazy, creative ideas to craft, engineer and invent products and services to make our world a better place. BCSN

Beaver County History Tidbits 4 In the 1790s, many years before Midland Borough was formed, tracts of land in the area had some colorful names, such as the Ohio Adonis, Apollo’s Retreat, Happy Retreat and Bachelor’s Delight. 4 Big Knob, a dome-shaped hill in New Sewickley Township, is Beaver County’s highest point at 1,382 feet. 4 Beaver County was formed in 1800 from parts of Allegheny and Washington counties. There were just six municipalities: the townships of North Beaver, South Beaver, Sewickley, First Moon, Second Moon and Hanover. Today, there are 54 municipalities. BCSN

Beverly said she was most proud of the staff, noting that everywhere she went, she would receive complimentary remarks on the help provided by the workers.

arewell and good luck to Beaver County Office on Aging administrator Beverly Sullivan, who retired April 10 after serving 10 years in this position. During her tenure at BCOA, she helped plan and develop the Center at the Mall senior community center, expand the Senior Gardens and support the development of the handicapped accessible garden, and work with BeaverLINK to bring 211 to Beaver County.

She graduated from West Virginia University and has worked in social services for 42 years. Prior to coming to BCOA, she was the administrative director at Mental Health in Rochester. While there, she wrote the grant which brought the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to Beaver County in 1985. Also, she was the director of senior services at the Medical Center in Beaver, and was the director at Beaver County Catholic Charities. After working in social services during her career, she watched programs

cycle and come back newly revised to meet current standards. There has been more consideration and rights of consumers to be involved in their services received. Previously, services tended to be provided on a medical model; now services are more personcentered. More programs, including Ombudsman, mental health services and hospices, are starting to use peerto-peer services to help people cope with issues, and she thinks this is good for individuals. Beverly and her husband of 30 years, Tony Kofalt, reside in Brighton Township. She has a lot of plans to get started on in retirement. She plans to paint the interior of her home and try painting some furniture. She enjoys entertaining, cooking out, bird watching and gardening. She and Tony are planning some day trips, which include riding a coal-fired steam engine train and seeing the elk in Elk County. Plus, she looks forward to enjoying time with her daughter Lorraine, son Timothy and three cats, Pumpkin, Rocket and Sox. BCSN

In-home services available through Beaver County Office on Aging

with cleaning is only provided when the person lives alone or with their spouse. Help is also available for bathing, dressing, grooming and toileting. Home-delivered meals can be provided for those who are homebound and unable to prepare nutritious meals with no one available to assist them.

There are several steps in the process to receive service, including a levelof-care determination/assessment, financial verification of income and assets, needs assessment and development of the care plan. In some cases, the care manager must obtain a physician’s certification from the person’s doctor. No services can be initiated until after verification of the previous year’s income and current

Adult day services can provide supervision and socialization for those with dementia or depression at one of three sites: Valley Care in Ambridge or Moon Township and LIFE in Center Township. Assistance with transportation to the site can be provided. Respite care is available for caregivers unable to leave their loved ones alone, but they need a break once or twice a week to take care of errands or just have some time alone. Personal Emergency Response units are available for those living alone, frail and at very high risk of falls. In some cases, assistance can be given in the form of medical equipment and supplies, such as incontinence supplies and raised toilet seats. Home modifications that enable the individual to remain at home are sometimes provided.

Services obtained under the Options program are based on need and are not entitlements. A call to the Information and Referral Department initiates the process. The Caregiver Support Program can provide unpaid caregivers with education, support, a yearly recognition luncheon and financial reimbursement for preapproved purchases. Regardless of the service needed, every individual has an assigned care manager who will provide support, information and assistance throughout the process. The care manager will follow up after services are initiated and will make regular phone calls and scheduled home visits to monitor the case. BCSN

Bad relationships Two ladies were out shopping when they started to discuss their home lives, one said, “Seems like all Alfred and I do anymore is fight. I’ve been so upset I’ve lost 20 pounds.” “Why don’t you just leave him then?” asked her friend. “Oh! Not yet.” the first replied, “I’d like to lose at least another fifteen pounds first.” Slow golfers are ahead of us Joe decides to take his boss Phil to play 9 holes on their lunch. While both men are playing excellent they are often held up by two women in front of them moving at a very slow pace. Joe offers to talk to the women and see if they can speed it up a bit. He gets about half of the way there stops and jogs back. His boss asks what the problem is. “Well one of those women is my wife and the other my mistress,” complained Joe. Phil just shook his head at Joe and started toward the women determined to finish his round of golf. Preparing to ask the ladies to speed up their game, he too stopped short and turned around.
