Beaver County Model Railroad and Historical Society hosts free annual holiday open house By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News Are you a Beaver County resident with a special nostalgia for trains? Do your children and grandchildren love to watch model trains meander around a beautiful backdrop? Then put on your conductor cap, because you’re in luck. The Beaver County Model Railroad and Historical Society in Monaca

is hosting a free Christmas season open house from November 28 through December 28. “During this time we encourage anyone with an interest in railroading, both model and prototype, to stop by our headquarters, located at 416 Sixth Street in Monaca, and spend some time with us,” says Charles Hamilton, who handles

public outreach for the club. “We are different than most model railroad groups in that we’ve woven the history of the railroads into our display. We tell you the history of each piece.” The open house is an opportunity to view a wide variety of locomotive power and rolling stock in action. Continued on page 14

A Health Buddy can help you navigate your care Whether you are going in for a routine check-up, having a medical test or need to be admitted to the hospital, having a supportive “health buddy” by your side is one of the best things you can do for both your physical and mental health. What Health Buddies are—and what they can do A health buddy can be any responsible person who cares about you, and does not have to be—and usually is not—a healthcare professional. Their role is to support you in ways that are most helpful to you as you navigate your healthcare. Here are just some of the ways a health buddy can support you: • Routine Check-Up: If you are going in for a check-up, you may be concerned you will forget some of the information the doctor tells you. In that case, your buddy can support you best by being a “second set of ears and eyes” to ensure you leave with the information you need.

November 2014 • Beaver County Senior News

4

• Medical Testing: Perhaps your doctor has scheduled you for a test, and you are anxious about both the procedure and the outcome. Having a buddy nearby—even if that person says nothing and simply holds your hand or sits in the waiting room— can help alleviate your stress. • Pre-Hospital Admission: If you are being admitted to the hospital, you may be relieved you are going to get the care you need. But you might be having difficulties understanding a complex treatment plan. If so, a health buddy can help you listen or take notes so you feel more informed and confident that you will be getting the care you need.

• In the Hospital: If you are hospitalized, a health buddy can add another layer of care that may contribute to your recovery. This includes things like staying by your side to ensure that well-meaning visitors don’t overwhelm you. It can also include routine things, like picking up and reading your mail to you. Your health buddy can also be there to listen when the doctor or nurse checks on you, and can speak up for you, if you need help. Choose your buddy wisely Health buddies can help you cope with anxiety, clarify information and get you the help you need. However, the wrong buddy could possibly make you feel even worse, so choose wisely. Don’t just ask an old friend to help or someone nearby—make sure whoever you ask has a positive outlook, is responsible and has the ability to put you at ease. Here are some other things to consider: • Although they may be well-meaning, are they also reliable and optimistic? • Do they have the ability to understand complex health information? • Do they have health issues themselves, and if so, will they be able to support you? If you don’t have the right person in your life who can be a supportive health buddy, be aware that local support groups, religious organizations and other nonprofits may be able to help you.

Determine what you need from a Health Buddy Studies show that the average patient forgets half of what is said at an appointment as soon as it is over. One thing a health buddy can do is take notes to ensure you don’t forget important health information. But they can help with many other things, too. Prior to asking someone to help you, assess your needs and write down specific ways that person can help. Do you mostly need moral support? Do you need someone to drive you to and from an appointment? Here are some questions to consider and information to share with your potential buddy: • Are you feeling nervous or afraid? • What specifically could your health buddy do to help reduce your anxiety? • Do you want your buddy to take notes during an appointment? • Are there things you may be confused about or embarrassed to ask your doctor, but should? Why not return the favor? You could take your buddy out for coffee or send a card to say thanks. But, perhaps the best way to say thanks is to return the favor and become a health buddy to your buddy. Together, you can help keep each other on track and stay healthy. Or, perhaps consider starting a volunteer “health buddy corps” for other seniors who might need the help. Finally, always keep in mind that even though your health buddy can help, it is always up to you to be responsible for and proactive about your own healthcare. BCSN

s we usher in a time of Thanksgiving, RSVP wants to thank all of our volunteers for their time and commitment to serving in the Beaver County area. Without the dedication of these individuals, services to the community would be drastically reduced. RSVP’s goal is to help organizations expand their services even further through volunteerism. That’s why we are always recruiting! Do you have a few hours to give? RSVP volunteers choose how, where and how often they want to serve, with commitments ranging from a few hours to 40 hours per week. The program is open to all US citizens, nationals or lawful permanent residents ages 55 and older. RSVP volunteers represent a diverse range of incomes, ages, genders, physical abilities, and ethnic and racial backgrounds. But they share a common desire to make a difference. Volunteers receive pre-service orientation training from the organization where they will serve, and supplemental insurance while on duty.

RSVP connects today’s older adults with the people and organizations that need them most. We help them become mentors, coaches or companions to people in need, or contribute their job skills and expertise to community projects and organizations. Everyone has unique gifts to share, and our volunteers make significant contributions by putting their best talents to work as leaders, entrepreneurs, organizers, builders, caregivers and mentors. Volunteers can also move in and out of options as their circumstances and interests change, and as the community agencies’ needs for volunteers change. Conceived during John F. Kennedy’s presidency, RSVP currently links more than 360,000 Americans to service opportunities. Their contributions of skills, knowledge and experience make a real difference to individuals, nonprofits, faithbased and other community organizations throughout the United States. RSVP values the contributions our volunteers make through service to their communities. Their knowledge, skills and life experience are of immeasurable value to the organizations and people they touch. Many volunteers serve in teams, building affiliations and mutual support, engaging in joint problemsolving, and drawing on the complementary skills of the team members. AARP’s TaxAide program seeks volunteers

T

he TaxAide program is sponsored by the AARP Foundation in conjunction with the IRS to provide tax preparation help for low- to moderateincome taxpayers with special attention to seniors. Neither the volunteers nor the clients need to be members of AARP. The service is free and gratuities cannot be accepted. The tax returns prepared include Federal Income tax, Pennsylvania Income tax, Local Wage tax and the Pennsylvania Property Tax/Rent Rebate Form. All returns are prepared on computers and electronically filed, except for the Wage tax and Property Tax/ Rent Rebate. While there is no income limit for filers, people with complex returns may be referred to see a paid tax return preparer. Also, due to the complexities of the tax code, there are topics that TaxAide preparers are not trained to do, such as rental income with depreciation.

November 2014 • Beaver County Senior News

There are presently six TaxAide sites in Beaver

The AARP Foundation has provided 10 laptops and five laser printers for TaxAide. Volunteers may use their personal computers, and any new volunteer who has a personal laptop is encouraged to use it.

County served by 17 volunteers. Typically a site is open for tax preparation on one or two days a week for four hours. Volunteers normally only work two or three days a week; there are usually four volunteers at a site. Current sites are New Life Presbyterian Church in Aliquippa, Circle of Friends in Baden, the Beaver Library, Brodhead Apartments in Beaver Falls, Pathway Church in Chippewa Township and the Center Fire Hall #1. Some sites are by appointment only and others are walk-in sites; a schedule for the 2015 tax season will be included in the January issue of the Beaver County Senior News.

The TaxAide program begins February 1 and will end on April 15. New volunteers will be offered a one-day orientation session in December, followed by eight days of mandatory training in January. Training materials and coursebooks are provided by the IRS. The training will include the common issues of tax law, as well as hands-on practice with the computer program that is used. All preparers must be IRS certified. To be certified, each preparer must pass a short ethics test and an open book tax law examination with a minimum grade of 80 percent.

As the IRS pushes for more electronic filing, the demand for this kind of service for the senior population will increase. If you are comfortable with computers and preparing relatively simple tax returns, consider volunteering for this program. If you don’t want to prepare taxes but would still like to help, positions are available as client facilitators, who greet clients and help them organize their paperwork before their taxes are prepared. Whether you serve as a counselor or facilitator, clients are usually so grateful that you will go home from a tax session knowing that you have done your good deed for the day. My travels to Northern Ireland, where fighting was the norm when I was a child

Angela sits on the basalt columns at Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland. By Angela Gentile, Planning Unit Program Monitor Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News

T

here are lots of fights, skirmishes and wars going on in many countries for many different reasons. Some of the fighting and disagreements have been going on for years. Sometimes, I think I know why the fighting is occurring, and many times I do not understand the reasons. It makes me sad. I feel sad for all the disruption of peoples’ lives, plus I cannot visit these countries because it is not safe right now. When you read about many of these countries, you learn that many of them used to be very cosmopolitan areas, and people from all parts of the world used to visit. I recently had the opportunity to visit a country that I could not have visited as a child. I was in Northern Ireland for several days and had a wonderful time visiting the sites, and I felt safe.

I was able to walk about Giant’s Causeway, an area of about 40,000 interlocking basalt columns, the result of an ancient volcanic eruption by the Antrim coastline. I toured the Titanic Museum. I had a daytime guided walking tour of Belfast and felt at ease. One member of our tour group asked the local guide if it would be safe to walk in Belfast in the evening for dinner. He looked at us blankly and said, “Well, yes.” Two of my travelling companions and I started out late in the afternoon during our free time and walked to a food and artist market, went to Catholic Mass and found a restaurant for dinner that our local guide frequents. We needed to ask for some directions along the way, and the locals were very helpful in guiding us toward our destination. I also had a walking tour of Derry, which is also known as Londonderry, where a lot of violence and gunfire took place many decades ago. We had a delightful tour by a local guide at McCrossan City

Tours, who is a retired postal worker. He showed us many areas of the city, once where it was dangerous to walk. He showed us the walls, many streets, landmarks, buildings that have been repaired from gunshots, and the Peoples Gallery, where murals are painted about the past and even current issues. Very simply, he explained that there was fighting for many years. Both sides were asked to get together many times over the years to talk about working out differences. For many years, one side would always say no. Finally, both sides agreed to talk and eventually agreed to a ceasefire. He said that they did not have anyone visiting them for 40 years and sincerely asked us to tell everyone that it is safe to visit Derry and Northern Ireland, whether as a tourist or to visit the land of their ancestors. Maybe countries that are fighting should invite representatives from Belfast and Derry in Northern Ireland to join them in any potential peace talks. I am sure the folks from Northern Ireland can shed a lot of insight on how to start getting along in our modern world. It takes both sides of a disagreement to get together to start working toward resolution. It is not an easy process. Maybe in another 30 years, I will be able to safely visit some of the countries that are currently fighting. Maybe I can drag my nephews along with me. Most likely at that point, they will be dragging me from site to site. Either way, that would make me happy. BCSN

Many older adults or their parents and grandparents immigrated to Beaver County due to the Irish potato famine or perhaps due to fighting and violence. I would enjoy hearing your family stories. Stop by and see me at the November 12 Senior Day at Circle of Friends-Baden, write to me at Angela Gentile, BCOA, 1020 Eighth Ave., Beaver Falls, PA 15010, or email me at agentile@bcoa.us.

For three decades there were differences between the Catholics and Protestants, along with political and social turmoil. It resulted in violence, and more than 3,000 people lost their lives and many thousands were hurt. Finally, there was a peace process calling for a ceasefire, and the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 was enacted. Northern Ireland is mostly self-governing, and it cooperates with the Republic of Ireland in some policy areas, and other things are taken care of by the British government.

Beaver County Model Railroad and Historical Society hosts free annual holiday open house periodicals, books, films and prototype operations guidelines. While admission to the open house is free, donations are greatly appreciated.

Continued from page 1 The current display features the Union Atlantic Railroad, an HO scale model railroad bridge route with equipment from many different railroads. It includes about 2,000 feet (nearly 30 scale miles) of mainline, branch line, marshalling yards, and siding track and switches. The layout has mountains, streams, several towns, unusual railroad bridges, trees made from natural plants such as goldenrod, and as many as eight trains operating on a doubletrack mainline at two levels. Visitors are also invited to look around the rest of the Society headquarters. The workroom is where society members work on the train collection, doing things like detailing the engines, painting and producing scenery for the display. The society’s library houses an impressive collection of railroading

Details of the model train display.

The display replicates local history.

The Beaver County Model Railroad and Historical Society was started more than 30 years ago when a small group of men interested in model railroading gathered to organize a club where they could share their ideas and pool their talents. In 1983, the members’ ideas and handiwork was set in motion with the construction of an operating display of trains and scenery in the Century National Bank building in Freedom, which served as the society’s headquarters for 10 years. That first effort resulted in a modular layout that was on public display for one holiday season at the Merrick Art Gallery in New Brighton. To this day, the primary focus of the society is to gather, preserve and collect

Now headquartered in the former Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad station in Monaca, the society currently has about 15 active members.
