US veterans experience visiting the war memorials in Washington, DC By Gina Mazza For Beaver County Senior News
It was a poignant moment.
One of the 40 US veterans— who all traveled together on October 3 to Washington, DC—slowly approached the Vietnam Veterans War Memorial. In his pocket was a crumpled scrap of paper. Written on it were the names of the comrades who’d served alongside him.
Nearing the wall, he caught sight of panel 61E. There they were . . . the names . . . all 90 of them, all killed on the same day. “What a moment that was,” expresses US Navy veteran Jerry Fisher of Brighton Township, who organizes the annual Veterans DC Bus Trips with his wife, Lydian. “There was not a dry eye around. It can be very emotional for these vets.” These free, one-day bus trips
were started in 2006 by Vietnam War veteran Jim Hilts of Coraopolis. His father was a World War II veteran who passed away before Jim could get him down to see the World War II Memorial. So Jim made a vow to get as many World War II veterans down to see the memorial “before it’s too late.” Jim was in charge of the trips for some time. When he was unable to continue, Jerry Continued on page 3

and Lydian took over with the help of several volunteers. As the number of World War II and Korean War veterans declined, the trip was open to all who served prior to May 15, 1975. “We do this as a way to give back something to those who sacrificed so much for our country,” Jerry says. In total, approximately 2,040 veterans have traveled on 44 buses since 2006. The sites visited in the District include the World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veterans War Memorial, the Marine Corps (Iwo Jima) Memorial and Arlington Cemetery, where they observe the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The excursions are offered every May and October departing from three pick-up points: downtown Beaver, Green Tree and Monroeville. Over the years, veterans have filled as many as five buses; now, the trips are typically one to two buses. It includes transportation to and from Washington, meals, snacks and beverages. A nurse, several volunteers and two local Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) students accompany the veterans. Wheelchairs are available on request. The next trip is being planned for May 21.
US Army veteran Emily Drake, 93; Navy veteran Adele Gabb, 66; and Air Force veteran Jesse Ferrari, 71; all three took part in the Veteran’s Bus Trip to Washington, DC.
The oldest participating World War II veteran, Charles Wiggins, 103, has made the trip several times in the past. “He couldn’t make last month’s trip but he’s ready to go in May 2020,” Jerry comments. “He will be 104. He told me, ‘Good Lord willing, I will be there’ and I said, ‘Charlie, as long as you’re still on two feet, you’re going with us’.”
For more information or to make a reservation for an upcoming trip, call (724) 709-3614.

Beaver County Office on Aging Bulletin

Question: What is open enrollment? Answer: This is the time of year that Medicare recipients can change their Advantage medical and Part D prescription drug plans. Medicare recipients can change from Original Medicare to an Advantage Plan or switch from one Advantage Plan to another. You are also allowed to change your Part D Drug Plan. Open enrollment ends on December 7. Actual coverage for your new plan will not begin until January 1. Question: What should I look for when comparing advantage plans?
November 2019 • Beaver County Senior News
8
Answer: First you want to look at the costs associated with the plan. If you have particular doctors that you want to see then you need to make sure your doctors are on those plans. This is extremely important in the case of specialists. Remember many Advantage Plans have networks of physicians that you must use to be covered by the plan.
Medicare Open Enrollment: Questions and Answers By Joanne McDermitt, APPRISE Coordinator, Beaver County Office on Aging For Beaver County Senior News
may differ in which prescription drugs they cover how much you have to pay and designated pharmacies. There are big differences among plans regarding the drugs covered and the cost. Question: Is it necessary to renew my current plan if I do not want to change plans? Answer: If you are already enrolled in a Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage Plan and don’t want to change plans, you don’t need to do anything during Open Enrollment. If your plan is being discontinued or not being renewed then you should receive a non-renewal notice from your plan. If this happens, then you will have to choose a new plan. APPRISE advises Medicare recipients to take the time each year to review their current plans to see what changes have been made to the plan. For example, the premium of your plan may have increased and no longer meets your budget. Another example is checking to make sure your prescription drugs are still covered under your plan. It is not unusual for drug plans to make changes on what drugs they will cover as well as the cost of those drugs.
Question: How do I compare Part D drug plans?
Question: Does open enrollment affect those with Medigap Supplement Plans?
Answer: All Medicare drug plans must give at least a standard level of coverage set by Medicare; however, plans offer different combinations of coverage and cost sharing. Medicare drug plans
Answer: If you have a Medigap Supplement Plan, Open Enrollment does not affect you unless you want to leave the Medigap Plan and switch to an Advantage Plan.
Question: What online resources are available to help? Answer: The Medicare Plan Finder is an online resource to help you view and compare all available drug and health plan choices. To find and compare available plans in your area, visit the Medicare Plan Finder at Medicare. gov/find-a-plan. Search by ZIP code or use your MyMedicare.gov account for information tailored just for you. Question: How can APPRISE help with open enrollment? Answer: APPRISE works individually and confidentially with clients to determine their individual health care needs and preferences, compare health insurance options, plan ahead for long term living, and obtain Medicare and supplemental coverage that fits their lifestyle and their budget. APPRISE counselors conduct a benefits checkup for clients to determine if someone might be eligible for additional benefit programs that would reduce their out-of-pocket expenses for prescription co-pays, monthly premiums and annual deductibles. Question: How do you contact APPRISE? Answer: The Beaver County APPRISE Program can be reached at (724) 847-2262. Their offices are in the Human Service Building, located at 1020 Eighth Avenue in Beaver Falls.

Pennsylvania has a new helpline for families in kinship care situations, including grandparents raising their grandchildren because of the opioid crisis. The KinConnector Helpline can help kinship care families access local, state and federal resources. KinConnector was created by Act 89 of 2018, which established a kinship navigator program for Pennsylvania. The helpline is staffed by Kinship Navigators, who are social service professionals prepared to help families locate, understand and access resources such as health, financial, legal services, support groups, training and parenting advice. Also, they help families locate physical or behavioral health service, enroll the child in school and find services designed to help the caregiver. They help families apply for federal, state and local benefits, including Social Security, public assistance or CHIP. A website of resources will be available later this year. Kinship care is becoming more common in Pennsylvania as grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings are stepping in to fill the role of parents who are seeking treatment or may have died from the disease of addiction. These caregivers often choose to care for a young relative to ensure that they receive care and support from a family member that they know and trust, even when processing their own emotions around the family’s situation. Children being cared for by relatives are less likely to end up in foster care and will experience better outcomes when they are living with a relative or someone they know. KinConnector is designed to help ease the burden on families and give them the tools and resources needed to be successful. To learn more about KinConnector, call (800) 546-2111 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on resources available for kinship families and grandparents raising grandchildren, visit dhs.pa.gov.
