A CELEBRATION OF GRADUATING SENIORS PEPPERDINE UNIVERSITY, SPRING 2020

Letter from the
Senior Edition Editor While our time at Pepperdine certainly didn’t end according to how many of us anticipated, we truly had an exceptional undergraduate experience. From overcoming the horrific Borderline shooting with the loss of a beloved community member, to evacuating during the Woolsey fire and later the coronavirus pandemic, facing adversity has not been easy. However, we have persevered and overcome these unexpected challenges with unity and resilience. While we will never forget these tragedies, they will live on through our legacy and through our unique stories at Pepperdine. When asked to serve as the editor of this publication, I knew that it would be special considering how much our class has overcome. I have also learned so much more about the Pepperdine community, which some call family, through this opportunity. After reviewing every single tribute in this publication, there is a powerful message of pride and love that transcends each individual tribute. With 87 tributes sponsored by parents, administrators and various departments and organizations, there is no doubt that the Class of 2020 is
being remembered with high esteem and valor. Our cover is inspired by the saying, “we can’t direct the wind, but we can adjust the sails.” With this in mind, I am certain that every single person from the graduating Class of 2020 can and will adjust their own (metaphorical) sails to achieve success wherever they go. As we phase into the next chapter of our lives, I hope you use your college experience—fueled by Pepperdine’s mantra of “service, purpose, and leadership”—to excel in life. I also hope and pray that your experience at Pepperdine has inspired you, challenged you, and will continue to shape you and that you will always remember your Pepperdine family. Wherever you go and wherever you end up, there is no doubt that this community will never forget the adversity we have overcome and the accomplishments we have achieved. And for that reason, there is plenty to celebrate! Congratulations Class of 2020! Gianni Cocchella Senior Edition Editor
Letter from the PEPPERDINE GRAPHIC MEDIA
Executive Editors Dear Seniors, By the Gianni No one could have predicted trials and tribulations we’ve had to face throughout our past four years at Pepperdine. It feels odd writing this letter from our childhood bedrooms; it feels odd waving our class goodbye via Zoom as we finish up finals. There was no opportunity for us to savor those final moments of watching the last sunset on the ocean from campus, last-minute cramming for finals in Payson or hearing our names called as we walk across the stage. But rather than focusing on what we lost, we want to share with you all the memories we are so grateful to have had. We started from the bottom: no Payson library, no Starbucks, no Oasis and no electricity. Instead we had a power-outage-disco party that traveled up and down Dorm Road and late-night HAWC meals with friends. We made our way up in independence and started to get the hang of everything our sophomore year as we stayed back in Malibu or went abroad. Time flew by as we finished up half of our college years. Junior year left us all a little shaken, but
we continued to build the community that
Cocchella our university takes pride in. We said our
goodbyes to AKB with a standing ovation. Before nostalgia settled in and we could plan our next steps in the future, COVID-19 made its way into our world. We all woke up that Wednesday morning to the words that cut our senior year and college years short. We rushed goodbyes and all went our separate ways home to reflect on the memories, places and relationships that made up our time at Pepperdine. Our time at Pepperdine could have been smoother. But it is the challenges and uncertainties that have shaped our class to be who we are. Our college degrees mean more than academic achievement, it symbolizes our ability to keep pushing forward. We have learned, we have grown and we have loved. We are ready to do the same wherever life takes us and with whatever life gives us. Congratulations, Class of 2020! We’ve got this! SENIORS! It is so bittersweet that we had to say our “see you later’s” much earlier than expected, but that in no way takes away from how much we want to CELEBRATE and THANK YOU for your hearts, efforts, creativity, fun, and service you brought to our entire campus community this year. Thinking back to our early days of training, we saw your big dreams and ideas for how to foster connections for all students, and your passions continue to stay true now more than ever even when physical distance keeps us apart. That’s a clear sign that no obstacle or wrench in the plan will ever be great enough to get in the way of the determination, stamina, and resilience that each of you carry. We wholeheartedly believe that you can do anything you put your minds to, and we can’t wait to keep cheering you on in all you will accomplish in your bright futures. Thank you for giving so much of yourselves to the Board. Know that you may be moving on from your time at Pepperdine, but you will always have your legacies here and be a member of our Board family. Continue to be the light that God has placed in you. We love you and we are so proud of you all! LOVE, LOU + SIERRA P.S. There are enumerable fond memories—Move-In Day, Waves Weekend, Sophomore year abroad in Florence, Spring Break 2019 at our house, and your contributions to the Graphic as writer, news editor and, finally, managing editor. Shout-out to Ainsley Diehl and her family for looking after you during times you could not make it home. And, most importantly, a tribute to the “random roommate” selection of Jenna Gaertner, a roommate for all 3 of your years in Malibu and, no doubt forever in your heart. The Gaertner’s have become our closest friends and will forever look forward to the next time we are all together.
