Coach Lorenzo Romar is leaving Pepperdine, a University, official confirmed to the Graphic. The Waves are currently 12-19 and will play the WCC championships against Pacific on March 7.

“Lorenzo Romar has been a valued member of the Pepperdine community for the last six seasons, and a total of nine seasons overall as head coach of the men’s basketball team,” wrote Michael Friel, senior director of Communications and Public Relations, in a March 4 email to the Graphic. The University expresses

its deep gratitude to Coach Romar for his dedication to the student-athletes and to the University and wishes him the very best in his future endeavors.

We owe a debt of gratitude to him for the way he loved his players.

Opera program stages romantic comedy in ‘The Merry Widow’

The Flora L. Thornton Opera Program presented “The Merry Widow” as their annual show Feb. 22 and 24, in Smothers Theatre. The community shares joy and laughter at this romantic comedy as the cast recounts challenges and highlights.

Admirers and potential suitors surround Hannah Glawari, the merry widow, played by junior Payton Ballinger on Feb. 24, in Smothers Theatre. Hannah inherited her late husband’s fortune and many sought her wealth.

The Flora L. Thornton Opera Program presented the operetta Feb. 22 and 24, in Smothers Theatre. Franz Lehár composed the 1905 operetta in German, but many shows, including this one, perform English translations, according to the show’s website.

Romar first coached the Waves from 1996-1999 before coaching at St. Louis University from 1999-2002 and University of Washington from 2002-2017. Romar then rejoined the Waves as head coach for the 2018-19 season and went 117-156 during his tenure.

Opinion: fall semester is better than spring

Picture this, it’s a hot August day in Malibu. Students are rushing to move into their dorms and are anxiously waiting to see their friends. Once move-in day is over, the following weekend is full of days lying on the beach and long summer nights.

Fall semester is the best semester at Pepperdine. Students are filled with the excitement of returning to Malibu after a long four-month summer break.

Nothing compares to the feeling of hugging your friend after a long time, going on Buyo runs at Malibu Yogurt and Ice Cream and watching the last of the summer sunsets in Malibu. Pepperdine is simply the place to be, especially during the months of August and September.
