letter from the SENIOR EDITION EDITORS Seniors,

Seniors,

Congratulations on your graduation and all your scholastic milestones! As the Pepperdine Affirmation Statement rightly puts it, “the student, as a person of infinite dignity, is the heart of the educational enterprise”; never have these words been truer than in this pandemic.

I remember standing outside of the TAC my first day on campus, staring into the sky as the moon silently crossed in front of the sun. Excitement, fear and anticipation all rose in me as I thought about what these next four years would be like. As all of us now know and what none of us could have predicted that day, it would be a journey that challegend, changed and strengthened us into who we are today.

When the University went remote last spring, we had no idea we would continue to be so far from friends and mentors a year later. Yet I am reminded each week in the Graphic student newspaper that Waves are spectacular, with “spectacular” to mean “full of little spectacles.” Pepperdine is full of little spectacles that, together, create such an extraordinary university bursting at the seams with excellency, passion and a determination to succeed. Pepperdine Graphic Media, the oldest student-led organization on campus, publishes an annual Senior Edition to commemorate and celebrate the students who make up the current graduating class. Through these tributes, we hope to give you a moment to reflect on the slices of life — the little spectacles — that provide our university with its distinct spirit. Recognition of your achievements does not need to be in solitude. In true Pepperdinian nature, we celebrate and strive as one.

We’ve seen many things during our time at Pepperdine. Some moments were breathtaking, others apocalyptic, and on the rare occasion a combination of both. What I’ve seen in this class, through it all, is a dedication to living. The joy, pain, triumphs and failures that comprise the college experience were carried beautifully by all of you. I want to thank all of my peers and professors who didn’t just speak of “purpose, service and leadership” but carried it out in action. As we all say our goodbyes and consider the complicated legacy of these past four years, take comfort in the fact you will forever be a Wave. Logan Wood (’21) Senior Edition Designer

letter from the PGM EXECUTIVE EDITOR Group study sessions in Payson. Late-night BuYo runs and Whole Foods trips. Close encounters with wildlife. Flights of stairs following missed shuttles. Complaining about Caf food. Stopping to say hello to everyone on the way to main campus. Spending too many hours in the newsroom. Soaking in sunsets and ocean views. Many of us, including myself, chose to attend Pepperdine because the closeknit community on campus felt like home. Together, we have had to figure out what it means to be Pepperdine students when we cannot be at Pepperdine, and the answer is different for all of us. I have learned that home isn’t about a place. It’s about people. Our time at Pepperdine has not been easy. It has been in the moments of adversity when I have known more than ever that Pepperdine was where I was meant to be. Comforting both strangers and friends after Borderline and the loss of Alaina. Sheltering in place with my professor and her family while covering Woolsey in a makeshift newsroom and updating family and friends between power outages. Moving out of my dorm one last time before the world shut down indefinitely. Together, we have lost and learned, realizing that we must never take anything for granted because it can all be taken away in a second. As first-years, we adjusted to the college environment, learning how to be away from our families for the first time and meeting new people. As sophomores, we gained self-confidence while studying abroad or

SENIOR EDITION 2021 FINAL DRAFT 1.indd 5

staying in Malibu, attempting to make sense of tragedy as it began to shape us into who we are today. As juniors, we thrived, doing what we loved with the people we loved until COVID-19 cut our time at Pepperdine short in a much bigger way than expected. As seniors, faced with the reality of completing our fourth and final year of college away from campus, we have had to cope with isolation, social injustice and a world of uncertainty, all while striving to help our community do the same and make the most out of what we have left. My experience at Pepperdine has taught me that while it is important to plan for the future, it is also important to appreciate the present. I often find myself worrying about the next part of my life and working tirelessly to achieve my next goal without remembering that I used to dream of where I am now. The fact that our time at college — the years we used to dream about and pray for — is coming to an end does not seem real. As we say goodbye to memories and mentors, friends and fun, remember that we are not leaving Pepperdine — we are taking it with us. As graduation approaches and we move on to the next chapter of our lives with a sense of “purpose, service and leadership,” let us have faith in others and ourselves, know that we are right where we are supposed to be and what is meant for us will find us, and appreciate the little things because they are actually the big things. Congratulations, Class of 2021 — we did it! Makena Huey (’21) Executive Editor

Danielle Aro Accolades for you Danielle! You have us on our feet praising God for you and your many accomplishments. From the time all our prayers were answered for direction, to the moment you receive your diploma from Pepperdine, you have been self-motivated to see everything to fruition, especially in difficult or tragic moments when you had to back up, regroup, and move forward again. We noticed this attribute about you very early in life and it will carry you through the toughest of times. We are blessed to have been here to support you and are enjoying the exciting life you lead. Trust in the Lord with all your heart…(Proverbs 3: 5-6).

We love you Jazzy Bear! Grandma Prima, Grandma Irene, Mom, Dad, Christina, Julia, Milo, Angel, and Davie.

AMARA FAITH CRAIG Congratulations beautiful daughter! We are so proud of the hard work you have put in and look forward to seeing you thrive in the field you have chosen. We know that it takes courage to grow and become who you really are, so always remember that YOU are BRAVER than you believe, STRONGER than you seem, SMARTER than you think, and LOVED more than you’ll ever know. Always remember that “we know what we are, but know not what we may be.” With love and pride today and always, Dad, Mom, Xavier, Landon, & Oliver

As parents, we knew there was something unique about you. You were always a very determined child. Reading and writing was your passion. As you grew into a beautiful young adult, your accomplishments just got greater, with you serving as editor-in-chief of Currents magazine and managing and then executive editor of Pepperdine Graphic Media. Proud does not begin to express our love for you. Your graduation is only the beginning chapter to your future as a globally renowned writer. Love, Dad, Mom, and Grandma.

Dani Baum

Laney Baum

Dani has made us laugh many times by insisting that her inheritance of terribly cumbersome traits from both of us parents has been quite a lot for her to carry inside of one person. She feels that she can rarely rest and needs to be working hard at something too much of the time. She also feels that she has to worry and pay a lot of attention to the infinite details of things. Whatever traits Dani did indeed inherit from us, her parents, she carries them wayyyy better than we carried them and she lives more beautifully than we could ever have imagined.

Laney took an upper division math class class and when she did so much better on the second test than she had done on the first test, she made the professor laugh out loud at hearing her mutter, “Well, that’s a plot twist!” Her parents have no worries about any plot twists in Laney’s life because they always seem to be leading her in really good directions. Her character is gold and Laney’s twin says that she would want Laney to raise her kids because Laney is just that good of a person.

We love how both of you girls think. We love who both of you girls are. We only hope that you will keep teaching your parents (with your wisdom and your humor) how to live better lives. We adore you two! Mom and Dad
