A wholehearted Welcome Back! to those of you who have already discovered the wealth of outstanding entertainment presented each season by the Publick Playhouse and—like all of us here—can’t wait to return for the exceptional concerts, plays, movies, classes, and our 40th year anniversary celebration. The 2017–18 season sparkles with extraordinary performances. We launch the season with jazz great T.S. Monk in concert, paying tribute to the 100th birthday of his father, Thelonious Monk, in an incredible performance that includes both legendary and newly-discovered compositions. Regina Belle, Shirley Jones, Heatwave, and Mandy Harvey are among the acclaimed artists performing here for the first time, and we are delighted to welcome back Jeff Majors, Mike Wiley, The Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO!) and Dallas Black Dance Theatre, all beloved and celebrated performers. THE PUBLICK PLAYHOUSE opened in 1947 as the Cheverly Theatre, the flagship of the Sidney Lust chain of movie houses. Designed in the art deco style by John Everson, it was one of the first public spaces in the area to have air conditioning. In the late 1960s, the theatre fell into decline and closed. In 1975, The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission acquired the property and began an extensive restoration, preserving many of the art deco elements of the building. In 1977, the building was re-opened as the Publick Playhouse, and since then has been a superior cultural resource that presents outstanding performances, classes, and art exhibitions for all ages.

Monk on Monk: A Centennial Celebration of Thelonious Monk Celebrate the 100th birthday of jazz icon Thelonious Monk with his son T.S. Monk, who carries on his father’s legacy in a memorable performance that includes newly discovered compositions as well as the celebrated pieces that made his father a legend. An illustrious jazz musician in his own right, T.S. Monk along with his ensemble pays tribute to the man called the “High Priest of Bebop” and “Father of Modern Jazz” in a performance of tremendous, swinging, eternal jazz. Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with an extravaganza of Latin American dance. Heatwave remains one of the most beloved groups of the 70s. This international funk/disco band is best known for its successful songs “Boogie Nights”, “Always and Forever”, and “The Groove Line”. Daniel Beaty: Emergency! A slave ship suddenly appears in present-day New York City harbor, setting off a series of events and reactions from more than two dozen characters, all embodied in this astonishing, Obie award-winning, one-man performance. Heralded by the Cincinnati CityBeat as “a masterful performer,” actor, poet, singer, and writer Daniel Beaty (a regular of Russell Simmons’ Def Poetry Jam) weaves a narrative that is a stirring commentary on what it is to be human with the longing to be free. Andrea Frierson: Me and Ella The life and music of The First Lady of Song is celebrated in this personal tribute by Broadway actress and singer Andrea Frierson. Xtreme Teens: 13th Film & Discussion A compelling 2016 documentary about the prison industry and mass incarceration, 13th (TV-MA) takes its name from the Constitutional amendment, which abolished slavery for everyone “except as a punishment for crime.” As 13th weaves through history, activism, racism and politics, the film exposes the bleak soul of American criminal justice in this electrifying call to conscience. This extraordinary “vocal big band” from Howard University calls to mind Manhattan Transfer, Take 6, and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross, but Afro Blue puts its own brilliant imprint on jazz song styles. The ensemble has been widely hailed for its flawless technique and ingenious renditions of music that, while primarily jazz, also includes traditional and popular melodies. Afro Blue has been featured on NPR’s All Things Considered and NBC’s The Sing-Off, and has performed at the White House, the Kennedy Center, and with Bobby McFerrin at the 2011 D.C. Jazz Festival. Kayla Waters Featuring Smooth Jazz Star Kim Waters Pianist, singer, and composer Kayla Waters is an ebullient performer whose recent single “I Am” soared to #1 on Billboard’s Smooth Jazz Chart just 10 weeks after its debut. The daughter of internationally acclaimed smooth jazz saxophonist Kim Waters, Kayla has performed all over the world with such musical luminaries as Stevie Wonder, Patrice Rushen, and Avery Sunshine. The Publick Playhouse offers a range of affordable, high quality entertainment just for Seniors 60 and better. Platinum Live matinees are approximately one hour long, giving seniors the opportunity to experience the Playhouse’s most popular performances in a time frame that is convenient and at a price that is affordable. Platinum Movies present popular, topical films in the comfortable and relaxing setting of the Publick Playhouse. All movies are presented with closed captions, and audio-assist headphones are available, so that everyone can enjoy the films.

On May 24, 1961, 19-year-old Jean Thompson boarded a Trailways bus in Montgomery, Alabama with 11 other young Freedom Riders bound for New Orleans—and history. Within three months, approximately 300 other riders took up the mantle to desegregate buses, following the path of the first brave few. Actor and playwright Mike Wiley stars in this one-man play that is a living monument to those remarkable men and women who faced violence and arrest in their courageous fight for just and equal treatment for all. Featuring Broadway Star, Syndee Winters One of the most influential African American pioneers in entertainment, Lena Horne shattered the color barrier in Hollywood, was deeply involved with the civil rights movement, and collaborated with some of the greatest musical artists of the 20th century. Broadway star Syndee Winters (Hamilton, Lion King, Pippin), stars in this play with music that depicts the most pivotal personal and professional moments of Horne’s remarkable life. Prince George’s Shakespeare in the Parks brings free, entertaining and accessible productions of works by the greatest playwright of the English language to communities throughout Prince George’s County, and provides opportunities for county-based directors, designers, actors, and musicians to share their creativity and expertise with county residents of all ages. All acting positions are paid; performances are scheduled from July 10–22, 2018 in open-air locations in Prince George’s County. Auditioning actors must be 18 years or older, and should present a monologue from one of Shakespeare’s plays. Actors need not be county residents to audition. Auditions are by appointment only. Driving from Washington, DC or Virginia: Take New York Avenue or I-295 to the Baltimore/Washington Parkway and exit on Route 202. Turn left on Route 202. The theatre is 1/2 mile on the left.
