BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION Narrative in Black Identity by Antonio McAfee, Tiffany Jones and Stephen Towns Montpelier Arts Center is proud to honor Black History Month through this exhibition celebrating African American heritage and identity. Antonio McAfee, Tiffany Jones and Stephen Towns share their insights about identity through the media of painting and photography. Using historic photos, personal journeys and portraits, these Baltimorebased artists help the viewer understand the importance of history and identity in contemporary times. BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXHIBITION Re-Invention by Winston Harris By combining printmaking techniques, digital manipulation, hand-colored processes and recycled past artwork, Winston Harris seeks to produce images that provoke and promote self-awareness and spiritual enlightenment. He invites the viewer to consider a variety of themes: how American Jazz might look as visual sound; the unification of different ethnicities; celebrations of commemorative events in American history, especially significant to African American history and culture; and the harmony between nature and spirituality. In Re-Invention, Harris hopes to promote, motivate, inspire, and educate participants with unique opportunities from both an academic and professional direction.

Black History Month Exhibit and Opening Reception This year’s Black History Month exhibit, What Remains: Archaeological Discoveries of African American Life in Prince George’s County, focuses on African American life in Prince George’s County from the late 1600s to early 1900s. Archaeologists conducted research and recovered artifacts from sites including Mount Calvert Historical and Archaeological Park, Northampton Slave Quarters and Archaeological Park, Cherry Hill Cemetery, Montpelier Mansion and Apple Hill. Using artifacts, interactive displays and images, the exhibit illuminates spirituality, home life, children and consumerism of African Americans in Prince George’s County. Messages of Hope The concept of hope is the main theme in the popular picture-book biography, Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope, which was written by Nikki Grimes and published prior to President Obama’s 2008 election. Several years have passed since the book was written and a lot has happened in the world. What words of motivation would you share with our President to encourage him “not to give up hope?” During the month of February, messages of hope will be collected and displayed in the community center’s lobby, and then mailed to the White House in March. Xtreme Teens: Howard University College Tour In a joint effort of the Bladensburg, Berwyn Heights and College Park Community Centers, teens are invited to join us for a college tour of Howard University. Concert: Harold Melvin’s Blue Notes Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes was one of the most popular Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s. Despite group founder and original lead singer Harold Melvin’s top billing, their most famous member was lead singer, Teddy Pendergrass. The group recruited Teddy as their drummer and he was promoted to lead singer in that same year.
