Seniors Making a Difference 2016
Elizabeth M. Hewlett
Making a Difference through Leadership Proud to be “60 & Better,” Elizabeth M. “Betty” Hewlett has dedicated her life to making a difference. In 2015, serving her second term as Chair of the Prince George’s County Planning Board and The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), Betty led an agency of professionals to earn an unprecedented SIXTH National Gold Medal for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management - the only agency in America to achieve this distinction! A seasoned attorney, land use expert, administrator and leader, Betty has been widely recognized both in Prince George’s County and throughout the Region for her dedication, skills, and accomplishments. The first African American and the first woman to chair the Prince George’s County Planning Board, and the first African American to chair the entire M-NCPPC, Betty has blazed many trails, and actively serves as a mentor to countless people of all ages. With over three decades of combined public and private sector experience, she has used her keen understanding and expertise, along with her empathy and insight as a lifetime volunteer, to improve the legal profession and the quality of life in Prince George’s County. Growing up in New York City, encountering road blocks and setbacks along the way as we all do, Betty has emerged a stronger, more effective servant-leader, who embraces life with great passion and joy. Ever - thankful for her blessings, Betty remains a firm believer in “to whom much is given, much is expected” and lives her life accordingly.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission Named Best in Nation with Unprecedented Sixth Gold Medal Win! M-NCPPC has been named the winner of the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Parks and Recreation Management for 2015. The coveted award was presented to the Commission at the annual National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) Congress. Among the four finalists representing the largest park agencies in the country, the Commission was recognized for “progressive and continuing improvement, development, and service to the public”. M-NCPPC is the only agency ever to earn this prestigious award six times (1973, 1977, 1983, 1984, 2003 and 2015). The Gold Medal Award in 1983 was for leadership in special recreation and outstanding community achievement for citizens with physical and mental disabilities. Each year, the National Gold Medal is presented to four outstanding agencies in the country, depending on population of the communities they serve, and following a rigorous application and judging process. M-NCPPC was established by Maryland State Law in 1927 to provide acquisition and maintenance of parkland, and regional planning and zoning for the citizens of Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties. In Prince George’s County, M-NCPPC also administers the entire public recreation program. For additional information on M-NCPPC and its services and facilities, log on to www.mncppc.org, or contact the Public Affairs offices at 301-952-4314, 301-495-4602, or 301-446-3300.
