B y P a t G r u bb With Covid-19 restrictions being relaxed and border traffic slowly approaching pre-pandemic times, the local parks board has lined up an exciting summer program for kids aged 6-12. Camp begins July 11 and goes through July 29, five days a week. Unlike in years past, there is no age breakdown by morning or afternoon session. The lead counselor for the second year in a row is Aslee Dixon. She will be assisted by at least five and possibly seven counselors. Young adults interested in working with the kids should contact the parks district. New for this year are field trips off the Point. Trips are currently planned to the Greater Vancouver Zoo, Science World and the Vancouver Aquarium. Counselors and volunteer parents will chaperone the kids on the bus trips. Final details will be available in mid-June. Funding for the trips was provided by a SEEK grant of $31,100 for the kid camp and activities. The district was recently awarded another $7,500 SEEK grant to develop a youth paddleboard program to be operated in conjunction with the kids camp and the kayak program. The money will be used to pay for the paddleboards and associated safety equipment. Leftover funds can be used to supplement the kayak program. The district has installed two storage bins, one at the Gulf Road community center and the other at Baker Field. The one at the community center contains pickleball equipment and basketballs while the Baker Field one contains baseball equipment and soccer balls. People wanting access to these bins for the recreational equipment can email prparkdistrict@gmail.com and specify which bin they need the code for, their name, their email address and a contact phone number. The district asks that all equipment to be put away after use. In other news, the commissioners have reposted their advertisement for a maintenance person after receiving no response.

Bordertown bill fails to proceed through Senate B y P a t G r u bb A Democrat-led effort to pass a bill in the U.S. Senate containing aid to Point Roberts and other exclaves failed after it fell short of the 60-vote filibuster-proof threshold. The aid component was contained in the restaurants and small business relief package proposed by Senate Democrats in continuation of Covid-19 relief programs. In an email to Point Roberts Chamber of Commerce president Brian Calder, Amanda Wyma-Bradley from U.S. Senator Patty Murray’s office wrote, “Only 5 Republicans joined Democrats in voting for this important bill, which made it impossible to get to the 60-vote threshold. We are evaluating our options for next steps, and I will

keep all of you in the loop as we determine what that might be.” The exclave component was modeled after U.S. Representative Suzan DelBene’s Point Roberts Small Business Fairness Act. The bill included $40 billion for restaurants, $1.4 billion for border businesses and $10 million for the three U.S. exclaves. DelBene’s legislative assistant Abe Friedman told Calder, “Though the bill had a majority of senators vote in favor of it (52-43), the bill failed to overcome the filibuster (which requires at least 60 votes in favor), due to Republican opposition. We were extremely disappointed by this outcome and understand that you are too.

No poultry from Canada allowed to enter the U.S. following avian flu outbreak
s One of a number of avian flu control zones in B.C. The larger area is a control zone while the central portion is an area of infection. The highly infectious H5N1 avian influenza virus, or bird flu, was detected in Whatcom County last week after recently being detected in B.C. and other Washington counties. Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) reports the county’s first detection was in a backyard domestic flock May 12. Health officials are asking bird owners to be vigilant and limit their birds’ contact with wild animals and for people to not touch both domestic and wild birds that are sick. Bird flu typically only infects birds; only one person in the U.S. has become infected by bird flu. Poultry products remain safe to eat as there is no evidence bird flu can be transmitted through food.
WSDA reports there have been 12 total confirmed cases of bird flu in Washington state since May 1. Bird flu was first reported in Washington in Okanogan and then later in Clallam, Pierce, Spokane and Pacific counties. Bird flu was detected in B.C. north of Kelowna April 13 and the province has 12 total reported cases. To report sick or dead domestic birds, call WSDA’s avian health program at 800/606-3056. Sick or dead wild birds can be reported to the Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife at bit.ly/ sickwildbirds. For more information on the avian influenza, visit WSDA’s website at agr.wa.gov/ birdflu.
From page1 Representative DelBene will continue to pursue options to provide additional relief for Point Roberts.” Calder has continued his efforts to get the Canadian government to drop the requirement that travelers must use the ArriveCAN app when they enter Canada from Point Roberts. “We are currently at about 60 percent of inbound border crossings from where we were pre-Covid lockdown. We are requesting the Canadian government to exempt Point Roberts from the ArriveCAN app which is causing many to pass up coming to visit us and is a useless imposition on the public.” Calder expressed thanks both to Murray and DelBene for their efforts on behalf of Point Roberts and asked Friedman to continue working on reinstating H2-B immigration status for Point Roberts businesses that seek to hire Canadians for certain types of jobs. Previously, local businesses could hire Canadians if they satisfied a set of conditions such as advertising the positions for local residents and other requirements. Joan Dickerson, owner of the former Brewster’s Restaurant on Gulf Road, said the program ended around 2008 just before the summer season. “I was able to use it for cooks, servers and general laborers.
We were required to reapply and pay for permits every six months. I kept a log of every American who applied for the jobs and why they weren’t qualified. It was a lot of paperwork and very expensive,” adding, “When the program went away, I changed my business into a store so I wouldn’t need as much labor.” Almost all local customer-facing businesses in Point Roberts are in need of staff as border traffic continues to increase as summer approaches. The International Marketplace, Kiniski’s Reef Tavern Restaurant and Bar, Breakwaters Bar & Grill, Westwind Marine Service, Whidbey Telecom, Saltwater Café and others have all been desperately seeking to hire workers.

Letters To The Editor
The Editor and Whatcom County Council: I am a 10-year homeowner in Point Roberts and thankful to be back. The All Point Bulletin recently ran a detailed article on Whatcom County’s ongoing considerations of short term rentals (STRs) and their effects on communities where they are found. It is my assertion that, as far as Point Roberts is concerned, that this is a solution looking for a problem. We all know that this exclave community is unique in many ways – including formal and informal rentals of properties by owners to holiday makers and others. After speaking with some Whatcom County staff today, it was confirmed that noise/bad neighbor complaints would be directed to the sheriff’s office. In Point Roberts, a monthly report of calls is published and rarely, if ever, are noise or bad neighbor complaints seen – or heard for that matter. It is a matter of public record. Where is the smoke? Where is the fire? Why bring out a cannon of legislation when a fly swatter is required? If these draft amendments were to proceed, I sincerely ask that the principality of Point Roberts be excluded. Neighborly cooperation, respect and consideration is in full effect in our community – and a mechanism to right any wrongs (aka the sheriff) exists and is already paid for by our increasing tax dollars. Why spend a penny more when both the problem (which is dubious at best) and the solution (which already exists) are in plain sight? STRs have very different effects upon every community. There are many justified applications of STR municipal bylaws around the world – I do not dispute this. Even citing the Harvard Business Review study of deleterious effects while applicable in New York City, is but a bogeyman here in Point Roberts. I would, however, like to see some kind of reporting of noise and related STR complaints over a number of years in Whatcom County – and Point Roberts in particular – to further justify council’s efforts. Yes, a problem begets a solution, but what is the extent of the problem? Is there one in Point Roberts? Much time and staff

effort (and tax dollars) since 2014 has gone into this issue. The registration, collection of fees, administration and monitoring of this new class of taxes will cost yet more taxpayer money that Whatcom County requires for other critical issues. Yes, this ordinance could be revenue/cost neutral, but why such bother? Like much of life, it is the few (STRs) that create difficulty for the many (aka the tyranny of the minority). I question why this issue is even being pursued? A barrage of complaints? An opportunity by hotels, motels and more traditional B and Bs to control their competition? Of course, Granicus would like to extend their system from the city of Bellingham to the county of Whatcom. The city says “high degree of satisfaction”... maybe so, but why impose this elsewhere if not required? So the Granicus STR regulation website might make more profit for their shareholders? In summation, Point Roberts is in desperate need to bring visitors and their spending to local merchants after the effects of Covid-19 shut downs. Providing STR accommodations to those visitors is vital and absolutely necessary. It is important that Whatcom County not impede or otherwise hinder the citizens of Point Roberts to aid in their economic recovery. I respectfully suggest that more important items such as reinstating the Bellingham ferry, reconsidering the mandatory charging of garbage pickup (vs purchasing tags), the potential purchase of the marina by the Port of Bellingham, or recent huge hikes in property taxes should take much more precedence in council’s agenda. Stephen R. Deller Point Roberts The Editor: Whatcom County Council and Point Roberts Community Advisory Committee (PRCAC) intends to benefit from short term rental fees by granting a profitable contract to Granicus with the ostensible reason that is to deal with noise, garbage and rental supply issues. When county council mandated homeowners pay fees with their property taxes for bi-weekly garbage, we were told that it would solve garbage problems. Noise, like garbage, is a social problem that cannot be addressed with legislation or fees, because enforcement of immediate problems must be solved face-to-face. Unless the intent of legislation, fees, etc. is to force the sale of vacation homes that owners cannot maintain for their exclusive use, long-term rentals would not increase rental supply as price and availability is
determined by housing stock, purchase price and cost-to-hold (taxes, fees, maintenance and management cost etc.). Since real estate today is sold in packages on the stock exchange as well as internet websites, purchase price is expensive. Only professional holding companies who have many ways to advertise may be left. Another issue for consideration is that restriction and use of private property by legislation and zoning may constitute “taking without compensation” as a constitutional and economic policy that has been litigated to the Supreme Court with property owners winning. The county is disadvantaged when the only players left are not modest homes of individual homeowners who wish to take a vacation from their home. Noise, traffic and garbage are best solved by ordinance so they can be written into leases with appropriate penalties by the parties involved. Neighbors affected can call 911 if infractions are egregious. In Point Roberts, because of the water surrounding us, noise can be heard from The Reef and Breakwater areas to the border. Loud bass sounds can be felt. Maybe ear plugs, like “fences make good neighbors,” would be a good investment. Legislation is not sufficient when a great portion of the population eat their takeout in the parking lot, put the garbage beside their car and drive away or dispose of old tires in vacant lots. That is why social issues are social issues. Donna Gillespie Point Roberts The Editor and members of Whatcom County Council: I attended your April 4 in-person meeting of council. I stayed for all three hours. I was interested in the personal accounts of citizens who attended your meeting and voiced their concerns, mostly about crime and homelessness. It was shocking to hear the accounts of the criminal activity Whatcom County folks are facing daily including just recently in Everson. Point Roberts is the only community in Whatcom County that has no crime to speak of and no homelessness at all. You need to remember that. Since none of you have visited Point Roberts and have to rely on articles in the local press and rumors to make decisions. Point Roberts has a rental housing problem and the problem stems from Canadian homeowners who choose to rent their second homes on Airbnb and not rent them to locals. Or not rent them at all. There are plenty of vacant surplus homes in Point Roberts. Particularly since the population has dropped to approximately 850 from a high of 1,200. Too many renters cannot afford to pay more than $900 a month when the landlords want $1,500 or more. We are losing American workers in the trades and services who cannot afford to (See next page)

store, which has been struggling since the pandemic began. You can’t keep a low profit margin business like a grocery store operating when your business is down 90 percent, as it continues to be, despite lifting border restrictions. If the Marketplace closes, the full-time American residents of Point Roberts will not have a source of fresh food. They will have to cross the border into Canada to shop for food and basic necessities, which is ridiculous. 3. Put in regulations regarding Airbnb rentals, similar to Atlanta, Georgia and Vancouver, B.C., which include: – Only two Airbnbs allowed, and one must be a primary residence. – Permits required at $150 each. – You must inform your neighbors as it impacts them as well. In Point Roberts, just like everywhere else, decent rental housing has become commoditized due to a speculative real estate market and greedy homeowners. Looking forward to seeing you in Point Roberts for closer look at the situation. It has been too long since you visited. John Lesow North Vancouver and Point Roberts The Editor: I am a new(ish) homeowner in Point Roberts with a concern over the (mis) management of the Seabright steps. The steps have been closed now since January for “maintenance” although it’s unclear that any maintenance is needed or that any work has been done. Kathryn Trainer, whom I believe is the wife of the current Seabright groundskeeper and not a spokesperson for Seabright, has been posting cautionary notes on NextDoor hinting that the residents (as you know there are only a handful) may try to permanently close the steps. When challenged on her statement, she launched attacks and shut down commenting on the post. A neighbor on my block dug up the permit originally granted to Seabright which requires them to offer trails and steps to the public, including maintenance. I am concerned that Seabright is not – and has no intention of – living up to their end of the bargain. I believe this is a very concerning private encroachment on the public’s access to the beach. I do hope you will cover this in the paper and attempt to obtain an actual statement from Seabright on their plans – whether or not they intend to comply with their obligations as stewards of public access trails and stairs. Orianda Guilfoyle Point Roberts
The Editor and Vladimir Putin, politician and leader: Sir, the spotlight of world opinion is on you. It appears you have decided to punish peoples who separated from the former Soviet Union to enlarge your own political image and strength. How? By subjugating such peoples, and by destroying what little they have achieved while out from under Moscow’s thumb. Was there no alternative? Could you not have spent a fraction of yours and Mother Russia’s world stature by offering to help these separated peoples while reminding populations involved of the opportunities and rewards of strengthening ties with the current, mighty Mother Russia? Imagine how easily Mother Russia – under your leadership – could have enticed Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania and even Ukraine to broaden relations and commerce with Russia. Think how long Finland elected to remain on neutral terms with Russia while resisting the appeal of joining the NATO family of nations. Even Georgia has not scorned Russia. Other areas, such as Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey, even Moldova, could likely have seen the benefits of closer ties with an enlightened Russia under your leadership. What is it about politics that causes countries to miss such opportunities? How is it that the military destruction of everything Ukrainians have achieved became necessary to you? Is it unchecked power and authority that leads political leaders down destructive paths? I am merely an ordinary American citizen, but I am not unfamiliar with the unproductive political roads of the past. Even now, here in the U.S., we are watching a major political party condemn itself as it blindly embraces the destruction of basic female reproductive rights and seeks to enact legislation wherever they’re able that would limit selected voting rights. Regrets to you for Russia’s missed opportunities. Apologies to Ukraine for Russia’s unwise actions, as well as to women in the U.S., for the U.S. Supreme Court’s gross miscarriage of justice and its failure to overturn state legislation designed to erect barriers to voting by selected categories of citizens of certain states. Campbell McClusky Point Roberts The Editor: It’s time for the U.S. to remove or repeal the Second Amendment. These gun fanatics love their weapons more than their children. More children in the U.S. die from guns than any other cause. Enough! This must end now! We control smoking, driving, drinking, borders, and not weapons? Insane! This violent state of the nation must end, or it will no longer survive. Brian Calder Point Roberts

A care home in Point Roberts? An idea whose time has come By Galen Wood Victor Hugo, French poet and novelist penned the statement, “Nothing else in the world is more powerful than an idea whose time has come” and Circle of Care’s (CoC) board of trustees agree. The need to build a small care home for elderly residents here in Point Roberts was confirmed in the results of an online survey the board conducted in 2021. The why is obvious; with a median age of 58 years old, the Point is disproportionately populated with a rapidly aging community of elders who all stated in the
survey that they would prefer to live on the Point until they die. The with whom is also obvious, at least to the board, which is working with a non-profit organization, The Green House Project, that has built over 370 small care homes in the U.S. over the last 17 years. But how? When? Where? The board hopes that the community will answer these questions during an ongoing series of town hall meetings along with the efforts of a steering committee driving a 501(c)3 organization. The steering committee is currently organizing itself after an initial meeting held on May
24 where interested individuals listened, learned and pelted the board with questions. The first town hall meeting will occur on Sunday, June 5 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the fire hall training room at 2030 Benson Road. In attendance to inform our community and to answer your questions will be Susan Ryan, senior director of The Green House Project, who is making a special detour from a conference in Whistler to meet our community and offer expertise and guidance on this timely project. Please put this important meeting on your calendar and plan to attend this one as well as each of the subsequent meetings. Why? Well, eventually this project will be important to you. Whether personally or for your parents, all of us will hopefully live long enough to have a need for this important asset to our community.
PAWS redoubles its efforts By Margot Griffiths As Covid-19 restrictions continue to ease, Point Roberts Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a registered non-profit organization, is renewing its focus on the wellbeing of the domestic and wild animals of Point Roberts. Our mandate has not changed but other aspects of the organization have. The PAWS listserv, founded by Carol Fuegi, has for many years provided information and assistance to the community of Point Roberts and beyond. Its original purpose was to provide notification of lost and found pets and to provide information on community activities such as fund raisers, yard sales and special events. Due to the increasing number of notices, the PAWS board has found the job of posting them to be unsustainable by a small group of volunteers. In exploring new options for this valuable service, the board has unanimously agreed to have Pam Sarkissian take over the management of the listserv with the launch of her start-up business, Point ePost.
We are grateful to Pam for her years of volunteer work serving as president of the PAWS board since 2018. At this time, Pam has resigned from the board in order to focus on Point ePost. We wish her the very best in her new venture. Our newly elected PAWS executive includes existing board members: Fran Rozyskie, president; Margot Griffiths, vice president; Jan Atkinson-Grosjean, treasurer; and Sandy James, secretary. We are pleased to welcome our newly appointed member-at-large, Katherine Smith. Over the years, PAWS has provided assistance to pet owners, promoted information on the use of pesticides and bat boxes, and advanced the wellbeing of wildlife including mason bee colonies, eagles and marine animals. These are just a few of our initiatives. All of us on the board of directors are thankful for the generous support of the people of Point Roberts. Watch for news of the revival of Every Dog’s a Winner, our popular dog show, coming to the community center lawn in late July. This is your chance to flaunt your pup because, as everybody knows, every Point Roberts dog truly is a winner.

s Are you ready for a little history lesson? Four episodes of Point Bulletin, a special collaboration between the All Point Bulletin and then-Delta Cable in 1992, covered schools, parks, border issues and the historical society and can be seen on Point Roberts TV. In total, the local Vancouver ride raised $61,859 with 319 riders participating. The Cassidys were fourth on the leader board in funds raised. Globally, 340,000 riders have raised $31.6 million since 2012 (115 countries), benefiting Movember, the world’s largest men’s health organization. Photo by Louise Cassidy
In the Covid-19 silver linings category, meet Rose Hawayek, whose path to Point Roberts was paved in part by the pandemic. In 2020, when Covid-19 restrictions caused the closure of her successful San Francisco aesthetics business, Rose moved to Point Roberts, enriching our community with a diverse background and a natural generosity of spirit. In my eyes, Rose embodies the concept of community. She cares about others and our environment. When friends and neighbors are in need, they can count on her concern. I know this first hand. When my dog Alfredo died, she was at my door. To life’s ups and downs, Rose brings humor and compassion. Simply put, she’s good company. Rose was born in Puerto Rico, but her hometown growing up was Miami. As the youngest member of the Hawayek family, she joined five older siblings, all born within six years and 10 months. Perhaps because of the security older siblings can provide, Rose developed a strongly independent spirit, fueled by a big imagination. “I invented my own games and made a huge adventure out of anything I could. When I rescued the family dog from under the house – the only one small enough to do it – I imagined fighting off tigers to get to him.” Her beautiful smile animates the room. Although her father was a native of New Orleans, his ancestry is Lebanese. Her mother is from Cuba, where her parents met. The family traveled a lot, as Rose’s father was in the business of fine jewelry, procuring gems to be sold in retail stores. His goals for his six children were straightforward. “He valued education above ev-
erything else,” Rose says. At age 13, Rose was enrolled in a French boarding school where the chief benefit was the wealth of diversity she encountered. “There were students from all around the world.” But her homecoming after graduating at 17-yearsold was a shock. For the first time, her father wasn’t at the airport to pick her up. Her parents had divorced while she was gone. Rose pursued a bachelor’s degree in marine biology at the University of Miami; for her graduation, her sister gave her a Caribbean cruise – a cruise Rose wanted to never end. Her imagination ignited the need to explore the world. “So I stayed on board for several years, as a croupier in the ship’s casino. I chose that because when in port, the casinos close and I got shore leave.” She bought land on St. Croix and traded it for a lot in Cape Coral, Florida. Thus began her dabble in real estate, buying, building, fixing up and selling. Drawn by the beauty of Lake Tahoe, she moved to a mountain retreat and worked in casinos throughout her 20s, when her life began to fully unfold. “I met my first girlfriend and came out, but it was a rough time. I had a gay community but outside of that tight group I was scared. Would I lose my job? Would someone want to hurt me? I hid it from my mom.” It was the mid-90s and eventually things began to ease up, but never enough. “There were so many direct, specific moments in my life when I needed courage. One of those moments was when I came out while dealing at the poker table,” Rose says. “Somebody

was bashing gays and he wouldn’t let up. I suddenly just stopped the game mid-deal. I asked the person to stop talking that way. I told him I was gay.” She shakes her head. “He argued with me ... told me I couldn’t be gay because I didn’t look gay. My hands were shaking when I started dealing again, expecting it to be my last night on the job. Then the tips just started pouring in from others at the table. I realized I was okay. Safe. I was embraced.” Rose’s authenticity is her strength. At age 30, Rose went back to school for a degree in arts in motion picture and TV production from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. “My sister and I started a production company called Monte Cristo Films and for 10 years we produced commercials, music videos and fea-
ture films.” They shot all over the globe. “I loved every aspect of producing, but it was intense – non-stop.” After developing high blood pressure from 18-hour days, the doctor warned her to choose a different path. After taking an aesthetics course at the Aveda Institute, Rose created a beautiful, calming environment in her own business, A Bella New. In 2014, Rose’s life changed forever. It was on the dance floor during Gay Pride weekend in San Francisco when Rose met Linda. “It was instantaneous,” she says, her face alight. A year later they married. “I never thought I’d be able to get married as a gay woman, but once you do, the feeling of acceptance is invaluable. The way you’re treated – everything is better. You’re home.” Due to Covid, and the shuttering of the business, decisions had to be made. “Linda was originally from Vancouver, so in October 2021 we ended up in Point Roberts and
what a great place to end up.” Rose gets the Point Roberts “sigh.” For her, it’s every time she sees an eagle, or heron, or deer. “Surrounded by water, mountains, this tranquility – what else can you ask for?” she says. “And my new neighbors, Frank and Justin on Whalen Drive anchored me here. They introduced me to everything Point Roberts.”
Many will remember Rose from her time at Nielson’s Building Center. “As a lesbian, I love hardware stores,” she laughs. “After two months there, other opportunities arose, but I am grateful for my time there,” Rose says, “And for all the knowledge I took with me and the great people I met and worked with.” (See People, page 10)

TEACHER’S CORNER Molo from South Africa! Namaste from India! As we continue our trip around the world our students have been learning about South Africa and India. While visiting South Africa, students talked about what animals you would see on a safari. Kruger National Park is a wonderful place to visit to see giraffes, elephants, lions and rhinos. Some of our students added animals like these into their South African Safari Silhouette art. To create these masterpieces students followed a multi step process where they painted a background focusing on blending colors to create a natural sunset made of realistic shades. Students then drew or traced a tree and animal onto their sunset which was painted in black to reflect the natural silhouette of the animal. All of our students worked so hard to create these beautiful pieces. While learning about India our students learned about the significance of the Taj Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a tomb for two people, Mumtaz Mahal and Emperor Shah Jahan that took 21 years to build and was constructed in the 1600s! After learning about the Taj Mahal students created their own mixed media piece using bleeding tissue paper, water, oil pastel and black fine point marker. Some students chose to add a decorative paisley motif to finish their piece. I continue to be impressed with how our students in grades K-3 create beautiful art that depicts the places we learn about. We not only have readers, writers, mathematicians and scientists in our school but also ARTISTS!

Volunteer appreciation day set By Dave Lee The Point Roberts community will celebrate Volunteer Appreciation Day on Saturday, June 25 at the Benson Road fire hall. The celebration promises fun for the whole family. Throughout the afternoon there will be a community potluck, burgers and hotdogs and dancing to live music performances by Craig Jacks and Point Roberts’ own rock and roll girl band (featuring Shaune Ann Feuz, Savilla Kress and Krispian Emert). Games and activities for all ages, competitions, storytelling, an Ollie Otter Bakery cakewalk and much more. A full schedule of events will be published closer to the event date. This celebration recognizes and thanks all those who helped the Point Roberts community over the past two years, as the pandemic and border restrictions impacted residents’ lives. This event will celebrate and thank our local volunteers with fun, laughter and good food. Everyone who lent a helping hand during the pandemic will be honored at Volunteer Appreciation Day. This includes the fire department and clinic workers who provided Covid-19 testing and administered vaccines, as well as the many volunteers who pitched in as needed. Honored as well are the staff of the International Marketplace, which stayed open to service the community despite the sharp drop in customers. This event celebrates every Point Roberts community member who pitched in to help in both big ways and small – even those who simply checked in on the well-being of neighbors. Special thanks are owed to those volunteers who regularly supported community groups. The problems of the past few years are retreating, but the need for community involvement does not fade. There are numerous volunteer groups around the Point

What strikes me most is Rose’s egalitarian and generous nature. She felt the pull of California and now the Pacific Northwest due to the ethos of kindness. “It’s more relaxed, more open to diversity and to humanity.” Rose has long been a member of numerous human rights groups including GLAAD (formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and HRC (Human Rights Coalition). She’s equally devoted to animal rights and she and Linda rescued a 12-year-old golden retriever, who joined the family’s two other dogs. Now 15, their lovely dog, Holly, won the lottery. Rose sets a good example, and I can only hope my recently rescued senior poodle is half as lucky. Rose’s warmth and openness to others is utterly genuine. To the great benefit of the people of Point Roberts, she is one who walks her talk.
where community members can get involved. Come on out to say thank you and share in the good times. Volunteer Appreciation Day will be held Saturday, June 25 from noon to 3 p.m. at 2030 Benson Road. Sponsors of the event as of publication include Circle of Care, Point Roberts Taxpayers Association, Canadian Property Owners Facebook Group, International Marketplace, Ollie Otter Bakery, Trinity Lutheran Community Church and Point Roberts Fire District 5.
Eagle shoutout By Jeff Butts There is currently one of the worst Avian Flu outbreaks ever, and it’s killing bald eagles all across the country. If you see an eagle on the ground, and you can get closer than 200 feet to it and it doesn’t fly away, that is a sure sign the eagle has something wrong with it. If you get closer than 50 feet and it still doesn’t fly away then it is certain that it is sick or injured and needs help immediately. Please call OWL Raptor Center (See Eagles, page 14)

He graduated from Niles Township High School in Niles, Illinois and attended the Illinois Institute of Technology. The family moved to Longview, Washington in 1963. Keith joined the U.S. Navy in 1965 and served more than 20 years, retiring as a Command Master Chief. He received a degree in philosophy from the University of Victoria. Keith is survived by his wife Kathy Mc-
Donald of Delta, B.C.; stepdaughters Josie Kozach of Delta, B.C. and Jenny Durrant of Gatineau, Q.C.; and his sister Karen (Mike) Barkstrom of Aberdeen, Washington. He will be inurned on Monday, June 6, at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. Arrangements were made by Jerns Funeral Home in Bellingham.
Dayton “Dwayne” Hunt January 18, 1934 – April 26, 2022 Dwayne (also known as Pappy, Montana and Mad Dog, to name just a few) went to the big ranch in the sky on April 26 in White Rock at age 88. Dwayne was a true cowboy originally born in Ponteix, Saskatchewan to Marjorie and Worth Hunt. After rodeoing around Alberta, he decided to try his hand at flying. Starting off with Shell in the Arctic, he then moved on to bigger equipment. Dwayne spent his entire career as a flight engineer working for some of the best airlines around the world: British Caledonian, Middle East Airlines, Wardair, Singapore Airlines and finally retiring from Polar Air Cargo in his 70s. He loved rodeos and he loved flying. He and his wife Virginia-Lee Hunt (predeceased in 2012) had a grand adventure over their 55-year marriage and spent their
last years together living in Point Roberts, Washington. Dwayne loved their home on the beach, crabbing and boating. Dwayne will be missed by his daughter Kari Grist (Mark), son Rob Hunt (Christi) and his three grandchildren, Madison, Jesse and Hannah. They will especially remember the waffles and ice cream that he made them for breakfast. He was Great-Grand Pappy to his first great-grandson, Asher who he had just met. He will also be missed by his sister Sherry Everett of Tsawwassen. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 28 at 2 p.m. at Boundary Bay Airport, Apron 3, Hangar 13. As this is a restricted area, if you are attending, please RSVP to rememberingdwayne@gmail.com for further information. “Welcome to heaven, Cowboy, your entry fees are paid.”

eagles within 24 hours, but the eagle we rescued in Point Roberts on May 2 is still alive and fighting to recover. We can’t be sure about what’s wrong with eagles until the veterinarian examines them. The sooner the eagle is rescued, the greater its chance of recovery, so don’t hesitate to call, and don’t worry about if it’s Injured or not, it’s better to be safe and get on top of the situation.
