Story PHOTO BY ART PINNEY PHOTOGRAPHY

Your Wedding

T

o one of life’s most important questions, you replied “yes.” Congratulations on your engagement. But now how do you get from “yes” to “I do?” The short answer is it’s a story that you will write yourself. On your wedding day you’ll share the promise of a lifetime of love with friends and family. Build the occasion with the best in both of you, making your day a celebration of yourselves and the love you share. Your wedding can be traditional or whimsical and still be all about you. As you write the story of your wedding day start with the basics: Is there something special to both of you that brought you together: A shared commitment to green living, a cultural context, a love of old movies? Perhaps you want to build your wedding around a theme or weave that theme into a more traditional format. Picking your date can also say a great deal about you. Do you love to share the hush of the first snowfall, hot cider and a roaring fire? Or do you look

forward to sunny skies, warm breezes and all-you-can eat raspberries? If you want mountains of fresh fruit, corn on the cob or fresh wild salmon, make sure you chose a date when those things are in season. In Italy and France they say a wet bride is a lucky bride, so perhaps you’ll want to consider November. What you like, from the weather to the menu, should guide you to a time and place that feels perfect. The Pacific Northwest is full of stunning indoor and outdoor locations and beautiful places to fit any budget. Winter and fall weddings will require an indoor location: An elegant hall, historic home, romantic chapel, waterfront resort or country inn. Don’t discount the brilliant colors of fall and the stark beauty of winter – find a way to bring the outside in, whether with a great view or seasonal foliage. Spring and summer weddings can take full advantage of the natural beauty of our area, choosing from dozens of public and private parks, vineyards, gardens, www. PacificCoastWeddings.info 5

farms and meadows. Water weaves through our region, so consider a sunset wedding on the water. Now who’s coming? Everyone in both of your address books, or just your immediate families? Or something in between? The number of guests will guide a lot of your decisions, from budget to location, but it will also set the tone for the event. Do you want the intimacy and serenity of a small event, or do you want a big, lively crowd? Deciding on a budget is the first step in making this decision.

Whether you do it all yourself with the help of friends and family, or hire planners, caterers and photographers will depend on your budget, but also on what kind of experience you want to have. Ask any wedding planner and you’ll get about the same answer: “Weddings are a huge amount of work. You want it done your way and you want it done right.” Spend some time as a couple as you write the story of your special day and talk about what you love, besides each other. If you share a home, look around. Chances are, your favorite colors and textures are right there in front of you. Maybe you want to explore local wedding night options on a weekend away together, or have a picnic at a prospective wedding location. You can delegate details, but you need to set the flavor of the day together.

rides can achieve a significant impact with accessories with minimal effect on their budget. Along with the trend towards texture and vintage dresses, small hats and veils are making a strong comeback. Birdcage veils have been popping up on some of the hippest heads in Hollywood. This classic pairs a short facecovering veil made of coarse, French or Russian-style netting with a headpiece decorated with crystals, a swirl of feathers or silk flowers dappled with pearls. Mantilla veils were very popular in 2010 and will carry that strength into this season – a sumptuous lace mantilla pairs perfectly with a simple

dress. Some brides are opting to skip the veil and choosing from a dazzling selection of hair jewelry incorporating feathers, flowers and crystals; anything you can imagine. Budget

ere is where dreams meet reality. Educate yourselves on the range of costs on all elements of the wedding. Setting a budget and sticking with it will go a long way toward eliminating stress and heartache. Decide how much you want to spend, where you want to splurge and where you want to economize. Make compromises so both of you feel you can afford the things most important to you. Not all compromises result in a disappointment. Many couples, for instance, are holding a brunch in place of a rehearsal dinner. Make sure your budget is realistic from the start. Talk to the professionals and find out what you can expect to spend. Tracking expenses during the planning process is critical if you want to avoid having to cut out something important at the last minute. We’ve included a budget outline in the back of this guide to help you plan and track your expenses.

nless you plan to leave home using a ladder and flying to Las Vegas or Mexico, chances are you will want to hire professionals to make sure your day comes off exactly the way you planned it: Photographers/videographers, musicians, florists, caterers and a wedding planner and coordinator. planning Planners and other wedding professionals take the burden off the wedding couple, friends and family, and ensure everything is as perfect as you would want your wedding day to be. A wedding planner can seem an unnecessary expense until you consider

how much time and headache they save. Planners have done the research you need, have established connections with vendors and can tell you who can get you what you want, at a price you can afford. They can keep you within budget and on schedule. Be realistic with yourself – with your busy life, will you have the time to do everything that needs to be done the way it needs to be done? Wedding planners are hugely popular for a very good reason – many brides simply don’t have the time to plan a wedding while they juggle their career and, perhaps, families. Creative Floral Design

Many sought after professionals, like choice locations, are booked a year or more in advance. Family members and friends may offer to reduce costs and personalize the event: Decorating cupcakes for a cupcake tower or preparing favors and floral displays on the tables. They should be welcomed as part of the wedding team as long as the bride and groom feel comfortable either accepting what they come up with, or admitting it’s not what they want. Nevertheless, delegating is important. If people want to get involved, assign them jobs.

photography A professional photographer offers a similar leap in quality and dependability. Current trends have brought commercial wedding photography closer to fashion shots than the posed photos of your parents’ wedding. “I’m seeing an effort to do something more personal, a photojournalistic approach rather than stopping the day,” photographer Clinton James said. Choosing the right photographer will pay off with images that are treasured for years. Hiring any professional needs to be an early step in planning your wedding.

wedding abounds in precious moments but one of the most special occurs when the bride and groom cut the cake, traditionally, the first task undertaken by the couple in their newly married state. Wedding cake or a variant of it dates back to the Roman Empire, as does the traditional practice of the wife passing the pieces of cake to the guests. Perhaps, this is

why modern weddings often feature a variant such as cupcakes; after all, who wants to spend the evening cutting cake for dozens and dozens of guests? Karen Dragutin of Market Street Catering says many of her customers go for fondant cake – the one with the silky smooth icing that looks so inviting and elegant. “Our preparation is unique – we layer, frost and then chill the cake for 24 hours after which we apply a thin layer of fondant. We make flawless fondant cakes,” she said. Popular flavors include white raspberry Chambord, strawberry Grand Marnier and other mouth-watering taste sensations – flavors that are enhanced with premium liquors, Karen added. As for the cake design, she likes to know the venue, the style of the wedding and the guest count. If the bride to be can gather photos of design elements that appeal to her, it will help Market Street design a traditional, fun or whimsical wedding cake. This year’s big colors? Dark wine and sage green, according to Karen.

Co-owner of Always and Forever Cakes, Debbie Curry said her most popular flavors have been Almond, Triple Chocolate and Red Velvet. They offer a private consultation to help the bride determine the right cake or dessert for her special day. Responding to the trend of taking a different approach to the wedding dessert, Always and Forever Cakes also offer a candy and dessert table either in conjunction with the cake or as an alternative. Debbie said it’s pretty much a split between those wanting a white cake and those looking for more color. Last summer, red and orange frosting with hot pink inside was popular.

etting married these days doesn’t mean your apparel choices are limited to white and traditional – there are plenty of alternatives that allow you to express your style and personality. “There are so many choices open to brides and grooms,” said Pam Needham, owner of Alicia’s Bridal Shoppe and producer of the Bridal Inspirations Wedding Expo in Bellingham and the Ultimate Bridal Faire at the Skagit Valley Casino Resort, both this January.

“You can really personalize your appearance. It’s all about you and your day, what you want to remember from that day and what you want your guests to remember,” said Pam. “There are more textures showing up. Taffeta, satin and silk are still popular and brocade continues to come back, something we started seeing in earnest in 2010,” she added. According to Pam, there are more choices in necklines beyond the strapless, a standard for years. Colors also

are more varied than what’s been seen before – and more jewel tones. “The world is your oyster when it comes to color,” Pam added. “A consignment boutique offering new and gently used bridal and formal wear”

Trends aside, whether it’s a grand ball gown or a simple sheath, there is a dress for every budget and every taste. “There are so many options when it comes to the dress it’s mindblowing,“ Pam said. Nationally, vintage dresses or new dresses with vintage touches such as cap sleeves have become very popular, reflecting the change to more textures. Regardless, it makes sense to start looking for a dress a year before your wedding and get an order in a good six to seven months before the big day to leave time for alterations. However, brides in a rush can still get a great

dress off the rack and have it ready in days if you’re willing to accept what’s available. The bottom line, Pam said, is that “when you find something you love, buy it, don’t wait,” advice she said was as relevant for a DJ or a caterer as much as it was for the dress. Perhaps the most underappreciated part of the bride’s wardrobe is her shoes. “Your shoes are probably the most important thing because you’re on your feet for so long,” Pam said. She recommends being conservative with the height of heels you choose, and wearing them a few times before the wedding to break them in. Maybe you’ll want to have a backup pair of shoes, remembering to get them with the same heel height. If you go from a pair of three-inch heels for the ceremony to flats at the reception your dress will be dragging on the floor. Bridesmaid dresses are getting more flexible, with many brides opting to let their bridesmaids choose their own styles and fabrics consistent with a color theme. Grooms can make a fashion statement of their own. Pam believes there will be a return to more formal wear for men. She’s brought in a whole new line of suits for purchase that are very reasonable and available in many colors. “You then have it to wear for a long time,” she points out. It used to be that all you could rent was black but this spring she is bringing in a new gray tuxedo that can be worn for summer weddings. “Really a couple can choose from all spectrums depending on what they envision for their day,” Pam said.

Invitations Invitations are the first glimpse guests will have into the flavor of your wedding while favors allow your guests to take some of that flavor home as a remembrance. You should carefully consider what you want to convey in your first and last brush with your guests. Luckily, choices abound for wedding invitations, from the traditional trip to the printers to a do-it-yourself kit from a craft store. It’s important to be realistic before choosing the DIY route – it might make sense for 40 guests, but for 125? If you have a big guest list or sloppy writing you may want to hire a calligrapher to address the envelopes for you – it’s a more personal touch than a label being printed off your computer. The look, feel and language of wedding invitations are open to endless invention: Feel free to incorporate favorite poetry, colors, textures and themes from the wedding. Inserts are optional, but there are lots of options available, from RSVP cards to map cards or reminder magnets. Whether you’re ordering or making your own invitations, take the time to double-check spelling and punctuation, and then check it again. And once more after that. Mistakes can be costly, or embarrassing. www. PacificCoastWeddings.info 17

f there is one thing that reflects the difference between your wedding and that of your parents’, it’s the wedding vows. An ongoing trend in every aspect of modern weddings is to make them more personal and more intimate, even if the couple is exchanging vows in front of hundreds of guests. The bride and groom often choose to face their guests, rather than turn their backs to them in the traditional manner. Children and other family members are also playing more prominent roles in the ceremony. If a couple is also bringing together two families, they may ask the children to join them in a candle ceremony, in which they light a candle together to honor their unity as a family. 18 www. PacificCoastWeddings.info

Many couples choose to write, modify, or supplement their own vows, depending on the religious practices that will be part of the ceremony. Writing your own vows is extra work, but it can add emotional intensity and honesty to the ceremony. You can look for

The color palette can enhance the emotional impact of a wedding. Choose colors that reflect your tastes, your location and the season. Spring and summer colors are livelier than those chosen for fall and winter. One place to look for inspiration is the 2011 color predictions by Pantone, a leader in color trends. Industries ranging from publishing to clothing design look to this global leader in color communication for their insight on color trends. For 2011, Pantone has called honeysuckle the color of the year. As they put it, “energizing honeysuckle lifts spirits and imparts confidence to meet life’s ongoing challenges.” Just the stuff for a couple embarking on a life’s adventure together. Other spring and summer colors to consider? Hot pink, green apple, violet purple, raspberry or tangerine orange come to mind. Fall and winter colors are cooler, more sophisticated but still possess intrinsic energy. Consider mocha, chocolate, slate grey or the traditional black and white with a pop of a single bright color. Some couples have been choosing a monochromatic color theme: choose a single color and use it in a full spectrum of shades. Think pale pink to deep red, or apricot to burnt orange.

ccording to florists and caterers, the trend towards more personalized and informal weddings is growing. Floral designer Evette Parham, from Colorful Flowers, said her clients are showing a lot of interest in the garden style. Instead of the traditional roses, she’s taking hydrangea or calla lily and placing them into creative and artistic designs. Evette likes to walk around the venue to see what’s growing and what catches the client’s eye. “It could be the color or the shape, they may not even know the flower’s name but they will know what they like when they see it,” she said. Evette then will create a demo bouquet arrangement to determine size and approach. She seeks out suggestions at that point. “I want them to have their own unique personalized display to tap into a deeper, meaningful design. Something might remind them of their grandmother’s

garden. This brings a personalized touch to their bouquet.” ...romantic enchantment...

Because there are more choices in summer, flowers can be less expensive. Hand-tied bouquets instead of a formal bouquet in a holder can be a beautiful and cost-effective way to go, and the bouquets can be placed in vases, becoming floral displays for the reception. On the catering side, the trend is local, local, local. There has been growing demand for seasonal, locally grown products. advance notice. A summer Saturday wedding will need to be booked more than a year in advance, but a Friday in fall can be put together much closer to the wedding day. A realistic budget from the beginning will make planning more fun and more fruitful. Leaving things for the last minute will leave you disappointed.

Unlike some Hollywood comedy, you will not catch your dress in the car door as you arrive late for the ceremony – no, your wedding will go off without a hitch, knock on wood. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be a good Girl Scout and be prepared with an emergency kit. What should it include? For clothing, a small sewing kit with needles, thread, buttons and safety pins. Double-sided tape for small tears, scissors, stick-on hem tape, clear nail polish for runs, and white chalk for masking stains. For you, Motrin and Zantac, blister protection, BandAids, anti-perspirant, cotton swabs, tissues, breath mints, lipstick, comb, small mirror, powder, emery board and nail polish. Finally, if you don’t have a wedding coordinator, make sure you or someone you delegate has a charged cell phone and a list of all the vendors involved, just in case.

Many of these are committed to sustainable choices, from seasonal, locally grown foods to organic cotton giant fluffy towels.
