Your wedding day will likely be the most memorable day of your life. But in order to make your big day just as you’ve always imagined, you will want to start planning anywhere from six months to a year or more in advance. Doing so will also help ensure that both you and your guests are able to relax enough to enjoy the celebration of your magical day. Before you begin planning, you may want to remember two things: Don’t panic if you fall behind schedule and don’t get caught up in trying to make things too perfect. Instead, try to enjoy the process of planning with your future spouse and remember the wonderful things about him or her, which made you want to marry them in the first place. To do this, you may want to create games around wedding preparations and setting aside time each month anniversary before the wedding and do something incredibly special as a couple such as a romantic dinner or a bike ride. It can be a lot of fun and it can be a real intimacy builder at the same time.
ESTABLISHING A BUDGET The first and most important thing you will want to do is establish your budget. This is crucial as expenses often add up quickly and without notice. You may want to try keeping track of all expenses and organizing your budget using a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel. Many brides start out with a budget in the beginning but then don’t continue to keep track of expenses. As a result, the brides often run out of money and end up skimping on more important items at the last minute. A little organization can help you avoid this pitfall. Once you and your partner have decided how much money you have and are going to spend, you should itemize and decide what percentage you want to spend on each aspect of the wedding. You may want to spend a large proportion on a grand ceremony while your partner may have his or her heart set on an exorbitant spread of food and drinks. You will both want to be www. aware of each other’s priorities before booking any vendors in order to avoid any potential conflict. CHOOSING A LOCATION Booking a location for your wedding should also be done in the beginning of the planning stage – especially if you plan on a summer wedding. The northwest region of Washington state and lower mainland British Columbia have some incredible venues at competitive prices if you compare them to venues of similar size and location in larger metropolitan areas. You may opt for a seaside wedding on a cliff overlooking Puget Sound, in a vineyard overlooking the rolling hills of Whatcom or Skagit counties, in a historic church, a luxurious yacht or an elegant hall. Either way, there are
only so many weekends in a year and popular venues are often booked as much as a year in advance, so if you have an absolute location in mind, book it as soon as possible. You will also want to ask about the facility’s catering and liquor policies, their policy on photography and if they provide a coordinator for the event. WEDDING PLANNERS The beginning is also the time to seek expert advice. Many people feel that hiring a wedding planner is an unnecessary, added expense, but then end up hiring one toward the end anyway. Hiring a skilled wedding planner can often guarantee paying a fair retail price or even a lower price for vendors. Wedding planners are experts in their field and have

In addition, some, with their pre-established connections to vendors, are able to negotiate special discounts you may not otherwise receive. You may think that you can save money by managing all the details of your wedding yourself or with the help of friends and family. In the end, this might leave you and your family frazzled and exhausted during the days before and on your big day. You probably won’t be able to relax if you’re the one responsible for making sure all the loose ends are tied the day of the ceremony. A wedding planner, on the other hand, can guide the photographer around, coordinate with various vendors and ensure everything runs smoothly so you and your family can relax and enjoy the celebration.

Start your search by checking out bridal magazines and get a feel for what appeals to you. Wedding shows are also a great source of inspiration as well as valuable contacts so you may want to look at the list of regional wedding events in the back of this book. While you’re at it, bring a notebook to write down contact information about the vendors you meet as they could come in handy. Also, many bridal shows offer drawings for prizes that could wholly compensate for the price of admission. MUSIC The music is likely one of the most powerful elements to set the tone of your wed-

ding day. And, whether you hire a full band or a skilled DJ, you should book them in advance as soon as possible. Not only will it guarantee that particular artist but will also be one less thing to worry about in the weeks prior to your wedding. THE WEDDING MC The master of ceremonies is one of the most important roles of all. The MC is responsible for ensuring the reception unfolds in the manner in which it is planned and, like most things, the more prepared the emcee is, the better the job he or she
will do. When choosing an MC, the couple should first reflect the atmosphere they are hoping to create. Fortunately, you don’t have to spend a lot to make your wedding food memorable – just don’t skimp on the quality or quantity. If catering is in your budget, you should start your search for a caterer early in the process. Ask for recommendations from friends, wedding planners, chefs or others in the industry. Once you decide on a minimum of two potential caterers, you will want to ask a number of questions to ensure their style and taste matches your own. Of course, you should also keep in mind the tastes of your most important guests. Get a sample of the palettes of your most important guests by bringing them along for a menu tasting and ask about the caterer’s policy on leftovers. You may also want to select a caterer that is flexible enough to incorporate your own tastes into the menu. Keep in mind seasonal availability of local produce and the client’s taste including options for vegetarians, vegans, and people with food allergies.
If catering is not within your budget, you may want to have your ceremony in the early afternoon after people have eaten lunch. If you can’t afford to cater, just have cake and mints instead. Questions for the caterer: • How involved will you be on the day of the wedding? • Will you provide linens, dishes or glassware? • Will you cue the band or tell you when to cut the cake? (If not, hiring a day-of coordinator might be helpful.) • Will you package leftovers to be taken home? ETIQUETTE Many people worry about the intricacies of wedding etiquette. There are the steadfast traditions of tossing the bouquet and seating parents in the front row, as well as the more nebulous traditions of which party pays for what. The most important etiquette, however, is simply being considerate of your friends and family. Keeping your most important guests in mind when you plan your wedding will likely elicit positive memories of your wedding in the future. When making a gift registry, for example, be sure to choose a store with items in a price range everyone will be able to afford ($50 to $150 is the standard price range). It’s also in good etiquette to keep your bridesmaids’ budgets and body types in mind when choosing the dresses. The best thing you can do is just enjoy the ability to design your wedding the way you want it. And just because you’ve never seen it done doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. You may also want to consider incorporating friends, family and children into the ceremony. One way to do this is to invite your guests to share their blessings vocally during the ceremony or you could create a blessings basket so guests can write words of good will. In the end, you’ll have a basket filled with blessings of love from family and friends. Your guests will feel important in doing so as well. Whatever you decide, though, it will be important to find an officiant who is in line with your own religious or spiritual beliefs and personal style.

PHOTOGRAPHY The photographs of your wedding will last long after the ceremony is over. That said, it is one area where you should try not to cut corners. It might be tempting to hire your friend who takes “really good pictures” but hiring a professional will likely have a better outcome (and it will give your friend a chance to enjoy the wedding). Because photographers are often booked

during busy season, you should start your search as soon as you make your engagement. If you’re working with a small budget, some photographers will shoot the wedding and give you the negatives to develop as you wish. Others charge less for the actual photography and a piece rate for enlargements. You should also ask if the photographer works with assistants and if those assistants are going to be taking photos. It is most important to be photographed by the person you meet with and the personality that you approve. You will also want to make sure the photographer’s style matches your own. Viewing the photographer’s portfolio or their web site will give a sense of their particular slant or ‘eye.’ If you are not sure what type of photographic style you want, try browsing several wedding magazines and note what type of photograph appeals to you. With four to six months left until the wedding, you are probably in the middle of full-on planning and for most brides, you are counting down the days. Major planning is now underway and it is an optimal time to tie up as many loose ends as possible in order to avoid last-minute panicking. Depending on your style and budget, one bride’s perfect ring is likely quite different from another. Many brides opt for the classic diamond ring but you may want something different. At two months away, the big day is quickly approaching. It is at this time you may begin to experience the infamous “bride’s syndrome,” a state of nervous anticipation that can create havoc for both you and those around you. To avoid this and keep things running smoothly, you will want to tie up all loose ends such as sending out your invitations and finishing all your appointments whether it be with the
photographer, the florist or the musician(s). SENDING THE INVITATIONS Once the invitations are made, they should be mailed as soon as possible. Proper etiquette dictates that invitations should arrive at your guests’ houses no less than two months before the wedding to give them time to plan and send back RSVPs. announcement and photo. Newspapers typically allow for a photo and 100 words or less about how you both met, where you plan on marrying and other details. PLAY WITH HAIRST YLES Now is the time to begin trying hairstyles for your wedding day. You might think you want a certain style and then you find out it doesn’t suit you in the most optimal way. Playing with hairstyles ahead of time will allow you to make mistakes and find the perfect look. For ideas, look through magazines and not just bridal ones and talk to your hairstylist about what they think might look good. If you don’t like a particular style, you will have time to go back to the drawing board instead of being stuck with a mess the day of your wedding.

At this point, you may be panicking over all the meticulous details of your wedding that you forgot, such as what color the plates and napkins will be and how many vegetarian guests to plan for (15 percent is the general rule). Or, perhaps you forgot a few small items such as the attendant gifts or your appointment for a makeover. It is now that you might want to remember the wonderful reasons why you are getting married in the first place and try to enjoy the process as much as possi-

ble. You may want to have just exactly the right food or flowers or the timing be impeccable. Couples and especially brides, however, can drive themselves crazy trying to make things look perfect and it’s easy to forget what it’s all about. COMPLETE FITTING APPOINTMENTS Now is the time to make sure everything fits as it should. Complete all your appointments and should any additional work need to be done, make sure you can
get your dress back in adequate time before the wedding. You don’t want to wait too long for alterations so get this done as soon as possible but don’t panic if you’re behind schedule. REHEARSAL DINNER RESERVATION Every wedding needs a rehearsal to allow all guests to get acquainted with everyone involved. You should make your reservations at least three weeks in advance for a dining atmosphere that is relaxed and intimate enough to serve as an icebreaker. Traditional etiquette dictates that you invite all those who attended the rehearsal, including the photographer. Many people ask if they must feed the photographer and while the answer is technically no, doing so is not only a nice gesture, but will make the photographer feel more included and allow attendants to warm up to him or her.
CONFIRM THE HONEYMOON The last thing you want is to have a wonderful wedding and then find out your reservation for your honeymoon was never actually placed or your flight cancelled. You should give one last call to your travel agent or place of reservation to make sure you are still on schedule.
