PA CIFIC COAST WEDDINGS YOUR COMPLETE WEDDING RESOURCE

Your Wedding Story Who? What? Where? When? Why? How? You’re on the road from “yes” to “I do.” On your wedding day you’ll share the promise of a lifetime of love with friends and family. Build the occasion with the best in both of you, making your day a celebration of yourselves and the love you share. Your wedding can be traditional or whimsical and still be all about you. As you write the story of your wedding day start with the basics: Who? What? Where? When? How? Why? Is there something special to both of you that brought you together: a shared commitment to green living, a cultural context, a love of old movies? Perhaps you want to build your wedding around a theme or weave that theme into a more traditional format. Picking your date can also say a lot

about you. Do you love to share the hush of the first snowfall, hot cider and a roaring fire? Or do you look forward to sunny skies, warm breezes and allyou-can eat raspberries? If you want mountains of fresh fruit, corn on the cob or fresh wild salmon, make sure you choose a date when those things are in season. In Italy and France they say a wet bride is a lucky bride, so if you want a casino reception, maybe consider November. What you like, from the weather to the menu, should guide you to a time and place that feels perfect. The Pacific Northwest is full of stunning indoor and outdoor locations; beautiful places to fit any budget. Winter and fall weddings will look for an indoor location: an elegant hall, hiswww. toric home, romantic chapel, waterfront resort or rustic inn. Don’t discount the brilliant colors of fall and the stark beauty of winter – maybe you want to find a way to bring the outside in, whether with a great view or seasonal foliage. Spring and summer weddings can take full advantage of the natural beauty of our area, choosing from dozens of public and private parks, vineyards, gardens, farms and meadows. Water weaves through our region, so consider a sunset wedding on the water. For travel bugs, there’s always the destination wedding: a beach in Hawaii, the deck of a cruise ship, a palazzo in Venice. It’s an option that will limit who can attend and what other options you have, such as choosing a caterer, baker or photographer, but at least you’re already on your hon-

eymoon! Maybe you can plan a reception when you return to share the occasion, and maybe some memories from the trip, with those who couldn’t attend. Now who’s coming? Everyone in both of your address books, or just your immediate families? Or something in between? The number of guests will guide a lot of your decisions, from budget to location, but it will also set the tone for the event. Do you want the intimacy and serenity of a small event, or do you want a big, lively crowd? Whether you do it all yourself with the help of friends and family, or hire planners, caterers and photographers will depend on your budget, but also on what kind of experience you want to have. Do you want to roll up your sleeves and work together, or do you want to lay back and enjoy? On this PHOTOGRAPHY

point especially, it’s vital a couple sees eye to eye so one person doesn’t feel overwhelmed with too much work and resent the other. Ask any wedding planner and you’ll get about the same answer: “Weddings are a huge amount of work. You want it done your way and you want it done right.” Spend some time as a couple as you write the story of your special day and talk about what you love, besides each other. If you share a home, look around. Chances are your favorite colors and textures are right there in front of you. Maybe you want to explore local wedding night options on a weekend away together, or have a picnic at a prospective wedding location. You can delegate details, but you need to set the flavor of the day together.

Green Wedding Many couples are choosing to share their commitment to sustainable living with a “green wedding.” There is no recipe for a green wedding, only the commitment of the couple to limit the impact their event has on the planet, by using eco-friendly options wherever they can. The online Green Bride Guide reports that the average wedding “produces 63 tons of CO2 and 400-600 pounds of trash.” By reducing usage of disposable items, buying recycled, local, and organic products, Photo by kp-studios.com

couples choosing a green wedding will reduce their impact as they share their commitment to sustainability with their guests. Green wedding guru Kate L. Harrison, author of “The Green Bride Guide,” recommends having a local rather than a destination wedding; using local, seasonal flowers and food; choosing recycled or vintage dresses and rings, using real flowers as cake decorations, recycled paper invitations, and making a charitable donation in honor of your guests instead of party favors as options for reducing a wedding’s environmental footprint. Budget

360-306-1146 FlemingPhotoStudio.com 10 www. PacificCoastWeddings.info

Setting a budget and sticking with it will go a long way toward eliminating stress and heartache. Decide how much you want to spend, where you want to splurge and where you want to skimp. Make compromises so both of you feel you could afford the things most important to you. And make sure your budget is realistic from the start. Talk to the pros and find out what you can expect to spend. Tracking expenses during the planning process is critical if you want to avoid having to cut out something important at the last minute. We’ve included a budget outline in the back of this guide to help you plan and track your budget.

Cast of Characters If you aren’t eloping and having your reception at a local restaurant, chances are you will want to hire professionals to make sure your day is just the way you want it: Photographers, musicians, florists, caterers, and a wedding planner and coordinator. Planners and other wedding professionals take the burden off the wedding couple, friends and family, and ensure everything is as perfect as you would want your wedding day to be. A wedding planner may seem an unnecessary expense until you factor in how much time and headache they can save. Planners have done the research you need done, have established connections with vendors and can tell you who can get you what you want, at a price you can afford. They can keep you within budget and on schedule. A wedding planner will also coordinate all the details on the big day, or you may opt to do the planning yourself and hire a coordinator for the rehearsal and wedding.

“If you have a planner, you have it all there, all done the way you want it, without the stress,” said planner Danielle Elder of Added Details. Planners can also help you cut costs, she added, using a growing number of doit-yourself options you can coordinate with professional services. “There are so many options.” Hiring a professional caterer and having your cake professionally baked can take a substantial load off wedding preparations: it really takes a pro to feed over thirty people, and they are able to buy and prepare food more economically than home cooks. The same is true for a florist, who can save you money in the end by suggesting lower priced options for a given season and accessing wholesale sources. Music is a very powerful personal expression that sets the tone for your wedding. You can pop in a CD of your favorite songs, but you may want to hire live music or a professional musician to ensure a flawless musical at-

mosphere. The DJ or musicians may also serve as an alternative to having a master of ceremonies, keeping the ceremony on schedule. A professional photographer offers a similar leap in quality and dependabil-

ity. Current trends have brought commercial wedding photography closer to fashion shots than the posed shots of your parents’ wedding. “I’m seeing an effort to do something more personal, a photojournalistic approach rather than stopping the day,” said photographer Clinton James. Choosing the right photographer will pay off with images that are treasured for years. Hiring any professional needs to be an early step in planning your wedding. “Find someone who has the personality you can work with, the portfolio you love, and the price you can work with, and book them now,” said James. Many sought after professionals, like choice locations, are booked a year or more in advance. Family members and friends may offer to reduce costs and personalize the event: decorating cupcakes for a cupcake tower, preparing favors, floral displays on the tables. They should be welcomed as part of the wedding team as long as the bride and groom feel comfortable either accepting what they come up with, or admitting it’s not what they want. “Delegate, delegate, delegate,” Elder said. “Find people who want to get involved and assign them jobs.”

What to Wear Current trends in dresses, accessories and formal wear If wedding dresses are an economic indicator, things are looking up. “One of the more noticeable trends is the return of the big, full ballgown, with the sash waistline,” said Pam Needham, owner of Alicia’s Bridal Shoppe and organizer of the Bridal Inspirations Weddding Expo in Bellingham this January. Another sign of the times is the oneshoulder dress, inspired by Michelle Obama’s inaugural ball gown, a oneshouldered white chiffon dress embel-

lished with appliqués and beading, by designer Jason Wu. “Flowers are very big this year,” Needham said. “Floral embellishments, three-dimensional floral accents, flowers in headpieces and paired with feathers.” Textural fabrics, such as brocade, are also showing up in more wedding gowns for 2010. Trends aside, whether it’s a grand ball gown or a simple sheath, there is a dress for every budget and every taste.

“There are so many options when it comes to the dress it’s mind-blowing,” Needham said. It’s ideal to start looking for a dress a year before your wedding and get an order in a good six to seven months before the big day to leave time for alterations. However, brides in a rush can still get a great dress off the rack and have it ready in days if you’re willing to accept what’s available. The bottom line, Needham said, is that “when you find something you love, buy it, don’t wait,” advice she said was as relevant for a DJ or a caterer as much as it was for the dress. Perhaps the most underappreciated part of the bride’s wardrobe is her shoes. “A lot of girls are going with colored shoes this year with their white dress,” Needham said. Strappy sandals

are another leading trend, and some wedges have come out that make a bride’s footing a little more sure during an outdoor wedding but still let her have sparkly feet. “Your shoes are probably the most important thing because you’re on your feet for so long,” Needham said. She recommends being conservative with the height of heels you choose, and wearing them a few times before the wedding to break them in. Maybe you’ll want to have a backup pair of shoes, remembering to get them with the same heel height. If you go from a pair of three-inch heels for the ceremony to flats at the reception your dress will be dragging on the floor. Then again you can change your dress too! “Something new we’re seeing a lot of this year is another little

white or ivory cocktail dress for part of the reception and the going away,” Needham said. Bridesmaid dresses are getting more flexible, with many brides opting to let their bridesmaids choose their own styles and fabrics consistent with a color theme. They can make a fashion statement of their own. 2010 is seeing a return to the black tuxedo, after a trend toward earthtones last year. It’s the accessories that personalize the groom’s wardrobe. Cumberbunds are making a comeback in 2010 as the partner to the fairytale look of a bride in a full ballgown. Grooms can also inject splashes of color with a tie or a vest. “Really, a couple can choose from all spectrums depending on what they envision for their day,” Needham said.

Accessories

Accessories can feel like a real splurge that won’t take too big a bite out of your budget. Birdcage veils have been popping up on some of the hippest heads in Hollywood. This classic pairs a short face-covering veil with a headpiece decorated with crystals, a swirl of feathers or silk flowers dappled with pearls. Mantilla veils are in style this season, and a sumptuous lace mantilla pairs perfectly with a simple dress. Some brides are opting to skip the veil and choosing from a dazzling selection of hair jewelry incorporating feathers, flowers, crystals, anything you can imagine. Wedding jewelry is a way to express yourself and add some zing to a simple outfit. Maybe both bride and groom want to pick out a special piece to wear on the big day, and maybe even the day after! Couples have been choosing wedding gifts for each other that are very personal and can be part of everyday, but still express the specialness of your commitment.

Colors

Colors are a very important part of the thematic continuity of a wedding, from flowers to wineglasses to dresses. Choose colors that work in your location and are compatible with your wedding season and theme. Current autumn and winter trends are warm shades: pinks, burgundies, browns in shades reflecting natural light and richness. Gold is also making a comeback. For spring, designers are forecasting the pairing of mood-lifting brights with rich bold colors: chocolate and turquoise, raspberry and lime green. A favorite for warm summer themes has been orange and fuschia, or the traditional black and white with a pop of a single bright color. Some couples have been choosing a monochromatic color theme: choose a single color and use it in a full spectrum of shades. Think pale pink to deep red, or apricot to burnt orange. www. PacificCoastWeddings.info 17

Saying I Do An ongoing trend in every aspect of modern weddings is to make them more personal and more intimate, even if the couple is exchanging vows in front of hundreds. The bride and groom often choose to face their guests, rather than turn their backs to them in the traditional manner. Children and other family members are also playing more prominent roles in the ceremony. If a couple is also bringing together two families, they may ask the children to join them in a candle ceremony, in which they light a candle together to honor their unity as a family.

The ceremony

Many couples choose to write, modify, or supplement their own vows, depending on the religious practices that will be part of the ceremony. Writing your own vows is extra work, but it can add emotional intensity and honesty to the ceremony. Your officiant can help you write your vows and integrate them into the ceremony, one of many reasons to choose someone who really clicks with you personally and spiritually.

Emergency kit Your wedding is supposed to be fun, not a headache. That said, the event can be overwhelming and little glitches can seem like mountains. The first thing every bride and groom needs in their emergency kit is a deep breath. Remember to breathe and enjoy; details are just details; remember the big picture. On the more practical side, have a little bag of goodies ready to cover the rough spots. Have something on hand for a headache or indigestion. For wardrobe failures pack up some double-sided tape and safety pins, clear nailpolish for runs if you’re wearing hose, maybe even a tiny sewing kit. Your feet need to be your friends. Some spray antiperspirant on their tootsies to keep them dry and comfortable and keep straps from sliding and causing blisters. Pack some moleskin or pads just in case. Finally, if you don’t have a wedding coordinator make sure you or someone you delegate has a charged cell phone and a list of all the vendors involved, just in case.

Flavor of the day Food and flowers

Florists and caterers report that recent trends for the wedding receptions have been for smaller, simpler, more economical but also more personalized and informal weddings. “Family style has been a good way to go,” said Market Street Catering executive chef Bryan Weener. “It’s more casual, more intimate and a little more relaxed,” than a buffet style or plated meal. There is still a beautifully set table and food is served on platters which diners pass to each other, creat-

ing a homey, holiday atmosphere and serving as an ice-breaker for guests seated next to a new face. Fondue is another fun, relaxed and cosy idea, whether cheese fondue as part of the meal or a chocolate fondue station as a substitute for cake. Floral designer Pat Jones echoed a trend towards personalized details and natural simplicity. “They are looking for small bouquets with more texture, greens, more natural products, even rocks and moss, shells,” she said. “It’s

Both Weener and Jones said they are seeing growing demand for seasonal, locally grown products. Weener also said some couples are celebrating their ancestry by including ethnic foods in their menus. 2009 was a year of belt tightening for weddings and while professionals are seeing an upswing in 2010, there is still an interest in being cost-savvy. Weener suggested couples budget $35 to 40 per guest as a minimum, whether for a sitdown dinner or a cocktail party with a spread of appetizers. “Appetizers are

classy but it’s woodsy too.” Bringing the outside inside is a theme with modern wedding décor, Jones said: branches of native, locally grown shrubs; candles set in sand and shells to reflect our shorelines. “People are asking for more locally grown flowers, so it’s very seasonal,” she said. A spring wedding will have Skagit Valley tulips, while a summer bride will carry a bright bunch of dahlias, a fall bride can opt for golden leaves and richly colored asters, and winter brides can use seasonal greens with floral accents.

ten times more labor intensive,” he said. “It’s not the cheaper way to go.” Because there are more choices in summer, flowers can be less expensive, Jones said. Hand-tied bouquets instead of a formal bouquet in a holder can be a beautiful and cost-effective way to go, and the bouquets can be placed in vases, becoming floral displays for the reception. Couples can also save money by getting married midweek, or even on a Friday when you can get discounts from rentals, caterers, even a band or a DJ. A midweek wedding also takes less advance notice. A summer Saturday wedding will need to be booked nine months to a year in advance, but a Friday in fall can be put together much closer to the wedding day. Jones said turning to the pros for some but not all of the wedding décor is one solution for cost-conscious couples.” A realistic budget from the beginning will make planning more fun and more fruitful, they both agree. “You should price out your flowers before ordering your dress,” Jones said. “Leaving things for the last minute will leave you disappointed.”

After the bride and groom, the star of the reception is unquestionably the cake – even if it isn’t cake! Most couples still are looking for some version of the classic tier cake but it’s coming with more and more options. “We do a lot of different flavors now,” said cake designer and baker Barb O’Brien of Barb’s Pies and Pastries. “It’s not your dry white cake anymore.” You can find a B-52 cake or spice cake for fall weddings, luscious fresh berry cakes in the summer. Couples can keep costs down by supplementing a smaller cake with sheet cake. “You can get your cake for half the price and for many people that’s where their budget is,” O’Brien said. Fresh flowers have become the preferred decoration for a wedding cake, and are often complemented by frosted floral designs. Gold is also making a comeback for details on cakes, especially for cooler season weddings. While cake designers are seeing couples asking for smaller cakes in a tighter economy, they still want it to be extravagant. More and more couples are opting

for an alternative to traditional cakes. The cupcake tower is well established as a fun and inexpensive option that you can do yourself with a little help from your friends and your local craft store. You can buy the stand to set the cupcakes on mimicking the traditional tiered cake, and either bake them youselves or buy blank cupcakes. Using prebought decorative elements, get some friends together for a cupcake-decorating party! Make a super-sized super-special cupcake for the bride and groom. Caterers are also getting requests for individual desserts as an alternative to the traditional cake, or a sumptuous dessert bar, or a chocolate fountain!

Invitations and Favors

The invitations you send out will give guests a sneak peak into the flavor of your wedding, and your wedding favors will let them take some of that flavor home. They should be as personalized as the event itself. Options for wedding invitations have ballooned, from the traditional trip to the printers to a do-ityourself kit from a craft store. It’s important to be realistic before choosing the DIY route – it might make sense for 60 guests, but for

Honeymoon

Into the sunset!

If your fabulous wedding was about sharing your love and commitment with friends and family, the honeymoon is for hogging it all to yourselves. Whether you jet off to an exotic destination or slip onto a ferry for a local island getaway, it’s time to unwind together.

26 www. PacificCoastWeddings.info

Together is the big word when planning your honeymoon: make choices together, choose something you will enjoy together. If you’ve been dreaming of Formula One racing in Monaco since you were a little kid but she doesn’t like to fly and is sensitive to loud noises, you’re just going to have to put

the race trip off for now. If you had envisioned the ultimate spa getaway and your man says there’s no way he’s going to get “rubbed down by a bunch of hippies” (real quote from real husband) well, another time. Marriage is about compromise, and your honeymoon is about shared good times. It’s also important to remember seasons when choosing where to go. A summer wedding in the Northwest is lovely and sunny, but a summer honeymoon in the British Virgin Islands can be sweltering and uncomfortable. With the green wedding trend comes the green honeymoon, and it also happens to be budget friendly. Shrink the environmental footprint of your honeymoon by choosing from one of hundreds of incredible local resorts, inns and lodges. Many of these are committed to sustainable choices, from seasonal, locally grown foods to solar panels and organic cotton giant fluffy towels. Take advantage of the stunning natural beauty of our area: hike the West Coast trail on Vancouver Island or learn to surf in Tofino; charter a sailboat and explore the San Juan islands, throwing in a scuba dive at Pirate’s Cove. For couples wanting to get farther away, all-inclusive resorts have been growing in popularity: sand, sea, sun, and not even a dot of stress. Just lie back and relax. Many couples are choosing a minihoneymoon at a local spot after the wedding and continue planning for a blow-out trip later on: an African safari, renting a private villa in the South Pacific, or a month touring vineyards in France and Italy. A honeymoon registry – there are several available online – can let guests help pay for the trip of a lifetime, rather than a toaster.
