Budget tips
T
The average couple spends somewhere around $25,000 on their wedding – even before factoring in the honeymoon or engagement ring. Whether you’re planning an intimate backyard wedding or a black tie hotel bash for 300, one of your first steps in planning your wedding should be to set up – and stick to – a basic budget. Traditionally, the bride’s family pays for most of the wedding (see sidebar). Today, however, it’s common for the couple to fund the wedding on their own, or for the groom’s family to contribute as well. Though your families may offer to contribute, they are in no way obligated to do so. As soon as your engagement is announced, have that conversation with your family and your future in-laws so you can budget accordingly. Expect to spend about half of your budget on the reception (including the venue and catering) and about 10 percent each on clothes, flowers, entertainment and photography, with the remainder going toward invitations, wedding rings, transportation and gifts. To keep from breaking the bank, make sure you and your partner agree on your priorities before committing to anything. Building in a 5 percent cushion just in case will also save your sanity when the actual costs inevitably come in a little higher than expected. 8

Hot Tip:
When it comes to favors, make them something edible. While little keepsakes are cute, they are often left behind. Spend your money on something people will be sure to grab, like a donut or cookie, candy, or a small jar of jam or honey.

Go professional
S
So your cousin is an amateur photographer and offered to photograph your wedding, or your best friend really wants to arrange your flowers. While it sounds tempting to save a little money and it’s hard to say no to our loved ones, accepting their offers may not be the best thing to do. Before you decide to hand over important wedding day tasks to your friends and relatives, let us tell you why we think you should hire a professional instead.
You get what you pay for. When you hire a professional, you get to thoroughly check them out – see their previous work, read reviews, get samples and make sure they have insurance. You can be sure that they are going to do a professional job on your wedding day. They’re charging for their service because they’re good at it, which you are able to confirm before you hire them. You’re not likely to have the same level of confidence in a friend or relative. They’re experienced. It’s unlikely that you’ve ever planned an event this big before and no matter how confident you are in your abilities, it is still reassuring to have people on your side who have been through it all before. Professionals have worked on many weddings, and know exactly what they should be doing, and how to keep your day on track. They’re also practiced at handling the stress and sometimes-chaotic environment of the average wedding day. You’re protected. What happens if your caterer or your venue doesn’t fulfill all the terms of your agreement with them? With professional vendors, you’ve got a contract that clearly states their obligations. With a family member or a friend, you have little or no legal recourse, and may be putting your relationship with that person 12
Pacific Coast Weddings 2017
at risk. In addition, professionals carry insurance and should any accidents happen, you won’t be left in the lurch.
Everyone can enjoy your day.
You want your friends and family to be able to relax and have fun at your wedding, and you should be able to do the same. Hiring professionals to work your wedding means that instead of wrangling people and making sure everyone is where they are supposed to be all day, you can step back and enjoy the celebration you’ve worked so hard to create.

Of course your loved ones want to have a special place in your big day – they should be involved in such an important event. Have your best friend and your mother help you shop for your wedding dress and accessories, and ask that sister with an eye for detail to help you pick your decorations, but when it comes to the essential components of your wedding, it’s best to leave it to the professionals.

Etiquette Lessons:
social media
M
Much of our understanding of etiquette when it comes to weddings comes from older generations, but social media is still new enough that our mothers can’t tell us what is and isn’t appropriate to share. We’re here to help with a list of social media dos and don’ts.
Over-post about the wedding. You want
to leave your guests some surprises on the wedding day.
Complain. Social media is not the place to
DON’T
vent about difficult bridesmaids, expensive vendors or anything else. You’ll regret it later. Instead, give your best friend a call – she’ll be happy to hear you out.
Post the engagement photo until you’ve
Post a link to your registry. You may just

be trying to be efficient, but it comes off as though you are soliciting gifts.
DO

Create a private wedding Facebook group if you want to
communicate pre-wedding details. This avoids upsetting any of your Facebook friends who may not have been invited to your wedding. Leave your phone in the dressing room on your wedding day. Your special day deserves your full attention – checking updates and posting photos can wait until tomorrow. Create a wedding website. It’s a great way of sharing your story and some of the more complicated details you won’t want to include in your paper invitations.
Look through your married friends’ wedding albums to get ideas for your own wedding. We all love real weddings, and where better to look than your friends? Use Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn to research wedding vendors you might be interested in. Social media is often updated frequently and offers a great insight into the vendor’s personality.

T
The time between getting engaged and being married is exceptionally exciting, with so much happening. But let’s be honest, it can also be pretty stressful to try to wrangle two families into one, and make your wedding happen the way you’ve envisioned it. Before you let that stress get to you, take some time to manage it. We’ve got some tips on the best ways we’ve found to reduce stress while wedding planning.
24
Pacific Coast Weddings 2017
Adam Nash Photography
Managing wedding stress
Accept help. First things first: If you try to take on everything you’ll drive yourself crazy. People will offer you their assistance – take it! Hire someone who knows what they’re doing. And if your partner doesn’t know how to get involved, give them manageable tasks. Spend time with your friends – no wedding talk allowed. Go out for coffee or drinks, and ask them about their lives. It will be nice for them to be the center of attention for a bit because, let’s face it, everyone’s been pretty focused on you for quite a while. Hit the gym – for your mind, not just your body. Staying active is a fantastic stress reliever. We’re not suggesting you should be trying to lose 20 pounds before your wedding (your partner loves you the way you are!), but taking an hour for yourself to lift weights or take a run will help alleviate stress. Treat yourself. Book a massage, a facial or a pedicure. While you’ve been trying to make lots of people happy, it’s good to take a moment to have someone else pamper you. Get some sleep. Bonus: It’ll get you a long way towards that lovely bridal glow you’re looking for. Slow down. Whether it be journaling, meditation, prayer or gratefulness practice, take some time away from screens, sounds and people to be alone with yourself. This practice of quieting your mind is invaluable when life gets a little out of hand. Be realistic. If you’re thinking that each tiny element of your wedding, from your place settings to your mother-in-law’s hair, has to be exactly the way you envisioned it, you’re setting yourself up for stress and failure. Things are never perfect. But if you decide that a perfect day for you means getting married to the person you love, surrounded by those you love, and don’t stress the small stuff, you’re one step closer to a day you’ll remember happily for the rest of your life.

Hot Tips: choosing the perfect venue
D
Decide on your wedding’s atmosphere. How do you want it to feel
– elegant and sophisticated, relaxed and rustic, vintage and glamorous? Your venue will go a long way toward creating the look and feel you’re after.
Engaging Possibilities!
Flexible Venue. On-Site Catering. Hotel Accommodations. The Skagit has what you want for a fun and memorable wedding experience.
Count your guests. It’s important to know how many people you plan to invite before you start seriously looking at venues. Not only will a large head count eliminate smaller venues, but a small wedding in a venue built for 350 can also look rather empty. Decide how much work you want to do. Backyard and park weddings can
be a lot of fun, and very personalized, but they’re also a lot of work. If you’re not up for renting everything separately and hauling it in and out, a more traditional wedding venue may be for you – they are usually equipped to do most of the heavy lifting for you.

Planning your wedding is a phenomenal amount of work – with so many tasks to complete and people to coordinate, it’s easy to lose track and have things slip through the cracks. If you take the time at the very beginning to get organized, when setbacks do occur, you’ll be able to take it in stride. In this section, you’ll find checklists, worksheets, wedding to-dos and suggested questions to ask prospective wedding vendors, all to keep you organized throughout the planning process. This is your copy of Pacific Coast Weddings, so mark it up, take notes, or add items as needed. And don’t forget, all of these worksheets are available to

ask your vendors
Before you hire your wedding vendors, you want to make sure you’ve interviewed them properly so you are sure you’re getting what you’ve paid for. But it’s often difficult to come up with questions on the spot. We’ve compiled lists of questions for wedding vendors – everyone from the venue to the caterer – that will make sure you’ve got all your bases covered.

Pacific Coast Weddings 2017

Questions to ask a
wedding planner
• How long have you been in business, and do you have a business license? • How many meetings do you expect we’ll have? • Will you come with us to meetings with other vendors? • How many other clients do you expect to have during the month of our wedding? • What happens if for some reason you cannot be at our wedding? • Do you have a minimum budget that you work with? • Are there any additional expenses on top of your base fee? • Have you ever worked with our chosen venue? • What parts of the planning will we be responsible for? • Can you provide a list of the items included in your fee?

Registering: the basics
S
Setting up a wedding registry with your partner is one of the highlights of wedding planning for couples starting housekeeping together. But, it can be hard to know what you really need. We’ve put together a list of needs for your registry. Customize it to your own wants!

2 Picture frames 2 Decorative pillows and throws 2 Rugs 2 Curtains 2 Vases, bowls and other decorative pieces (these are great as less expensive registry items) 2 Pieces of art

Miscellaneous Totes and other organizational supplies. Especially if you have a small home, you’re going to need some help making good use of your space and organizing all of your gifts. Supplies for your hobbies. Do you love camping? Include a tent or a camp stove. Are you music dorks? Register for great vinyl or a set of quality speakers. This is your registry after all, and it’s there to set you up for your life together. Gift cards. These are great contingency gifts. You’ll realize you forgot to register for something you need, or something will come up, and you’ll be prepared. This is even more crucial if you’re getting married far from your home, either at a destination wedding or close to your families; you won’t want to cart a bunch of gifts home on the plane. Honeymoon registry. This is controversial; some people still view it as tacky, but if your honeymoon is your primary concern, or you’re already set up in a home together, it’s a viable option. To keep it from appearing tasteless, rather than asking for a blanket amount, itemize your list, for example: A night in our honeymoon suite, $250; lunch by the sea, $100; couple’s massage, $120; etc. Donations. If you’ve already got most of what you need, asking for donations to a favorite charity is a great option.

69
Post-weddingchecklist 2 Finalize vendor contracts and payments. 2 Send out thank you notes within two months. 2 Return unwanted and duplicate gifts. Check your receipts – most companies have a
90-day return limit.
2 Clean and store your dress. The longer you wait, the harder it is to get out any stains. 2 Finalize your wedding album. Pick your favorite photos and order prints for your
album and your friends and family.
2 Insure your wedding rings. 2 Order copies of your marriage license. You’ll need to take it just about everywhere
with you in the next few months, so make sure you have a few copies just in case.
2 Did you move? Send everyone your new address. 2 If your name or address changed, you’ll need to make sure it changes here:
Social security card
Driver’s license
Passport
Bank accounts
Insurance
Employment and school records
Investments
Will
Lease
And more…
2 Figure out your finances – apply for joint accounts and meet with a financial planner. 2 Plan ahead for tax season – talk with a tax accountant. 2 Review existing insurance plans and change your beneficiary. 2 Create or update your will. 2 Write a review of your wedding vendors online. 2 Share your photos with us at facebook.com/PacificCoastWeddings!
