Green initiatives to suffer from budget cutbacks Spending on energy saving programmes may fall victim to the Government’s austerity drive following plans to cut funding to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Green Deal. Analysis from Green Alliance, a charity and independent think tank focused on the environment, predicts that DECC could lose up to 90% of its staff by 2018 if average reductions across non-protected departments come to pass. A recent report in The Independent also suggests that the Green Deal could be wound down following disappointing numbers in uptake. The home improvement scheme no longer has a minister in charge, with the energy efficiency brief having been handed off to Lord Bourne, a junior minister in the department with other responsibilities in the Welsh Office. It is feared that cutting the budgets for these energy saving programmes could have a chilling effect on delivering energy market reforms and climate change policies. As a result of the cuts announced by Chancellor George Osborne, DECC will be forced to find a savings of around £70million over the next year, with £40million coming from funds that have been set aside for energy efficiency schemes. Further cuts will take hold in the Autumn Spending Review.
Former Energy Secretary Ed Davey has expressed alarm at the prospect of defunding DECC. “The main effect of slashing the headcount at DECC will be cutting economic growth and undermining private sector investment,” he said. “My concern is over the Treasury wanting to cut back and not give energy efficiency the prominence it merits.” The widely-criticised Green Deal is also facing an uncertain future in light of its failure to appeal to homeowners. Greg Barker, the Tory Energy Minister who launched the energy efficiency scheme at the start of 2013, expected the Green Deal to have 10,000 active plans within the first year of operation. Two and a half years on, fewer than 7900 households have completed works under the scheme.
Mr Barker has attributed the scheme’s failure to the Big Six energy companies, saying: “I expected them to come forward with a comprehensive package for their millions of customers, and the bottom line is they haven’t. Installing a whole house retrofit would require substantial investment in skills and equipment to offer that. They prefer to invest their capital in just selling electricity.” The Government also intends to end new public subsidies for onshore wind farms and has to date made no plans to renew the budget for the RHI, which has been ring-fenced only until March 2016. A number of companies within the industry have expressed concerns about the Government’s lack of commitment to build a low-carbon Britain. “The issue of climate change is one which cannot be put on the back burner,” says Paul Hardy, MD at Baxi. “With the former coalition having set a real precedence for green growth, it is important that we do not lose momentum and continue to move a low-carbon economy along – but we need clarity from the Government.”

Plumber guilty of defrauding customers Restored to former glory
A heating engineer from Instow, North Devon has been found guilty of three charges of fraud and three for contravening Professional Diligence under Consumer Protection legislation following an investigation carried out by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards. The Judge in the case said Gary Henry, 54, trading under the names Barnstaple Plumbing and Heating, and Gary Henry Ltd, had shown ‘serious dishonesty’ in his dealings with customers. After receiving complaints about his work, Devon and Somerset Trading Standards discovered that in 2011 and 2012 Mr Henry
carried out work which was of poor standard and vastly overpriced. The level of over-pricing for parts and labour were so high that the court found him guilty of fraud in relation to three out of four of the complainants’ cases. The quality of some of the work was so poor that experts expressed serious safety concerns. One elderly customer was charged over £25,000 for the replacement of an oil-fired system, which when inspected by an expert was found to have numerous faults. Other installations were found to have unsafe electrical wiring, an oil supply line
unsafely installed and in once case the cavity wall had not been properly sealed where a flue passed through it, posing a fire risk. Mr Henry had also invoiced customers for work that had not been done, and falsely claimed in advertisements and on documentation that he was registered with OFTEC, the main trade association of technicians working with oil-fired heating and cooking systems, when he was not. According to experts, Mr Henry’s invoices and work were exorbitant and excessive. He will be sentenced after probation reports and a financial investigation are conducted.

persuade public Viewpoint New research has revealed that just 21% of those people planning to make energy efficient changes to their homes over the next 12 months are looking to take advantage of government subsidies. Some 37% are aware of the finance offers available but have decided not to use them, while 18% were not aware any existed. The survey, carried out by credit provider Pay4Later, suggests that many respondents thought that the application process for a government subsidy was too complicated and many didn’t want to pay for a survey to see if they qualify. John Wark, Marketing Manager at Pay4Later, says: “People are waking up to the fact that they may find a more competitive financial deal elsewhere. We offer energy efficiency suppliers and installers instantdecision finance for their customers starting at 0% APR, which can be better than the rates offered through the Government’s Green Deal, for example.” The company says that the amount of finance it has provided for energy efficiency home improvements has risen by 83% over the last year. The research reveals that
by Chris Jones
Waiting for the green light
58% of people are planning to make changes to their homes over the next 12 months to improve energy efficiency levels. Of these, around 46% intend to spend over £1000, 22% more than £5000, and 6% will spend over £10,000. Just under 40% of respondents said that they intend to finance some or all of this through loans. Just over one in three will borrow up to £2500, 17% will borrow between £2500 and £5000, and 9% aim to borrow more than £10,000. John Wark adds: “Despite energy costs coming down, the average annual bill for a dual fuel customer is still £1265. This, coupled with the fact that many households have felt a financial squeeze in recent years, means making energy saving improvements to your home can be one of the best ways to cut the cost of living.”
This issue of PHAM News went to press a day before George Osborne’s first budget under a Conservative Government, but it seems a safe bet to say that funding for some of the Coalition’s various green initiatives will be well down the list of the Treasury’s spending priorities. David Cameron’s famous boast of his previous administration being the ‘greenest Government ever’ are unlikely to be repeated during his current term in office. The lack of interest in the Green Deal initiative has probably done little to persuade the Government that there is a widespread appetite for such schemes, and the recent fall in energy prices has allowed such issues to slip off the agenda. The retrenchment from a commitment to low-carbon technologies is unlikely to result in a public outcry, and it wouldn’t be the first time that Westminster could be accused of adopting a short-term view of the world, but it would be reassuring to think that those who run our affairs could occasionally look beyond the next five years of office. Most experts agree that our reliance on fossil fuels will have to come to an end at some point and UK homeowners will need to look at alternative ways to heat their homes. But the challenge of climate change and carbon reduction targets are not going to be met without some form of Government intervention, and there is no immediate prospect of further subsidies or legislation. Those installers who have been persuaded to spend time and money to train on renewable technologies are unlikely to be comforted by the thought that they will probably, at some time in the distant future, see a return on that investment. OFTEC welcomes Environmental excellence recognised falling oil prices OFTEC, the UK’s oil heating body, reports that falling oil prices have helped to retain demand for oil boilers despite predictions of market decline and the threat from alternative technologies. The fall in the price of crude oil means that the cost of heating a threebedroom home with oil is currently £500 cheaper than it was two years ago, and oil boiler sales for January-April 2015 are 7% up compared to the same period last year. Speaking at the organisation’s recent AGM, outgoing Chairman Martyn Bridges argued that there were good reasons to believe there was a long term future for oil. “The ingredients for a healthy oil market for the foreseeable future are in place,” he said, “and I am confident the association will remain at the forefront of the industry.” Previously Vice Chairman, Nick Hawkins, General Manager at Deso (part of Kingspan Group) now takes over from Martyn for the next two years and spoke about the challenges ahead.
Nick Hawkins, OFTEC Chair
“Our mission is to listen to and understand the needs of our 7500 plus technicians and one million oil using households and ensure we continue to provide the best, progressive support and services going forward,” he said. “Over the coming months, we will ramp up further our lobbying for more realistic carbon reduction and energy efficiency to be introduced that will encourage far greater consumer takeup. These would still include renewable technology incentives but also encompass more affordable measures, such as a boiler scrappage scheme.”
The 15th annual Environmental 2020 Awards hosted by Worcester Bosch Group recently recognised those who have made an outstanding commitment to tackling climate change through the use of high-efficiency heating technologies. The awards highlight best practice from installers who are making strides to conserve the environment by embracing the environmental potential of domestic properties. Six installers and three specifiers received their prizes from the event’s special guest Andy Bradley, Director at Delta
– Energy & Environment. The winners for each of nine categories were selected from over 100 entries. Taking the Greenstar gas-fired boiler installation award was Simon Smart of

the link between indoor air pollutants and reduced life expectancy. The study suggests that a change in the way that homes in the UK are ventilated, with more use of air filtration and ventilation controls, could reduce diseases such as lung cancer and asthma which can be aggravated by poor indoor air quality.
Josh Ellis, winner of the 2014 SkillPLUMB competition, has picked up another accolade – the VQ Learner of the Year Award 2015. The 21 year old student plumber from Exeter received the award in recognition of his outstanding achievement following a vocational qualification in plumbing at Exeter College, beating eight other regional winners from across England. Josh has since progressed to a Level 3 Plumbing qualification and become the main installer for his company due to the exceptionally high standard of his work. He is now successfully juggling high demand for his work with further studies at college and has recently won the college’s Apprentice of the Year award in recognition of his hard work.

News Review New national Presidents take the stage
Fixed price success The last 12 months have been good for YourRepair Plumbers, which reports business turnover rising to £250,000 since it was launched a year ago. The firm was set up by MD Adam Fryer (pictured above) and his partner Sarah Chell in a bid to bring more reliability and pricing transparency to the plumbing industry. Adam puts his company’s
growth figures down to strong repeat business. He says: “While householders usually hire a plumber for one job, 85% of our callouts are to loyal, satisfied repeat customers. Our clients appreciate that we’re the only local company offering fixed prices.” Based in Crewe, YourRepair Plumbers covers Cheshire and Staffordshire.
The new national Presidents for three major industry bodies have been announced for the 2015/2016 period: John Leonard of SNIPEF, Terry Stephenson of CIPHE, and John Jones of APHC. John Leonard of Belfast is the fourth SNIPEF National President from Northern Ireland. His father, Joe, was President in 1996/97 and was present at the AGM in May to see his son elected to the same office. Terry Stephenson assumes the role of CIPHE President, having been a member of the Institute for nearly 36 years and having served as a committee member on the Domestic Heating Group, the Technical Services Board, and the Education

& Training Group. Paul Williams has been voted in as Vice President. John Jones, who is Lead Engineer at Clwyd Heating Renewable Energy Services Ltd (CHRES), steps into the APHC presidency with 31 years industry experience
which began with traditional plumbing and evolved into a speciality in renewable heating solutions. Speaking at his inauguration, John Jones said: “During my time I’ve seen many changes, from increasing quantities of
paperwork, competence schemes, green initiatives and basic changes in the technology and IT we employ in our everyday work. What is clear is that it’s never been more important to be a part of a trade association to keep abreast of these changes.”

Chocolate giveaway This summer BWT, the water technology specialist, is giving installers a chance to win one of its water softeners as part of its National Luxury Water campaign. Branded bars of chocolate are to be given away at selected merchants and at exhibitions, with details of the competition printed on the inside wrapper. BWT is using the competition to also promote its training sessions, which equip installers with everything they need to fit the company’s water softeners. Winner Paul Pickering (r) awarded his prize by Stuart Lee
Paul Pickering will be going to the British Superbike Championship race in Assen, Holland this September, courtesy of JG Speedfit. Paul won the latest round in the plumbing supplier’s ongoing ‘Every Metre Counts 2015’ competition, having purchased a coil of JG Layflat pipe to qualify. The prize includes flights, hotel accommodation and VIP hospitality. The competition continues, with the top prize – a Kawasaki ZX-10R bike – still
up for grabs. To enter the competition, just fill in your contact details on the back of the card found in each JG Layflat coil and send it back to JG Speedfit. Paul was presented with his prize by JG Speedfit’s Stuart Lee at the Mansfield Plumb Center branch. Paul said: “I was surprised and delighted to have won the trip to Assen. We use JG Layflat pipe often as we usually need long pipe runs with no connection joints, which the JG Layflat pipe allows.”
Reminder about new wiring regulations County shows the place for biomass
NICEIC and ELECSA have issued a reminder to installers that all electrical installations designed after 30 June need to comply with BS 7671:2008 incorporating Amendment 3:2015 of the IET Wiring Regulations. The new standard was issued at the beginning of the
year, with contractors given a six month transition period to get up to speed with the changes. The amendment, now in a yellow book, contains many new changes and requirements to the way electrical installations should be constructed.
Alan Wells, Technical and Standards Director at Certsure, which operates the NICEIC and ELECSA brands, says: “It is important that all contractors are aware of the changes and what they might mean to them when carrying out electrical installation work. Failure to adhere to the
new standards could result in legal action if the work is deemed not to comply with the revised standard. It will also be a requirement for all registered contractors to hold a copy of the current wiring regulations and demonstrate that they are conversant with the changes.”
Donations to burns charity The heating and plumbing products supplier Westco has announced that it will donate 50p to the Children’s Burns Trust for every Safeguard Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) sold. The Children’s Burns Trust is a national charity that works with NHS professionals and families to help fund rehabilitation and support for children living with burns. In addition, the Trust also undertakes
6.indd 1
awareness raising campaigns to reduce the number of burns and scalds happening to children in the first place. Westco MD Nick Horton comments: “We’re keen to see the safest, most energy efficient products becoming standard for all plumbers and installers. With this in mind, it’s vital that, as an industry leader, we promote the importance of safety through the use of appropriate
products. However using the correct TMV-approved valves is only half the battle when it comes to protecting our most vulnerable. Once installed, regular maintenance and checks are essential. “We hope that by supporting the Children’s Burns Trust we won’t just help raise much-needed funds for child burn victims, we’ll also raise awareness of this very important issue.”
Visitors to some of the UK’s major county shows this summer will have the chance to see Euroheat’s new exhibition vehicle. A purpose-built 14m artic trailer provides a ‘mobile home’ to display the company’s biomass boilers and equipment. Simon Holden, co-founder of Euroheat, says: “County shows are a key marketplace for us, where the rural community are the main recipients of biomass. By having a presence we’re well-placed to talk directly to end users. Our new exhibition vehicle makes this task a whole lot easier, with everything we need in one place, set up and ready to show.” The Euroheat exhibition vehicle will be attending the Royal Welsh Show (20-23 July), Pembroke Show (19-21 August) and Chatsworth Show (4-6 September).

BRE Innovation Park unveils the e4 Business award for Stevenage plumber
Ten years after opening the BRE Innovation Park, Lord Prescott returned to the Watford site to help celebrate its 10th anniversary. The Park is home to some of the world’s most sustainable buildings, landscape designs and many hundreds of innovative low carbon products, materials and technologies. The event included the launch of the Park’s latest project, the Wienerberger e4 brick house, which will be the first home to be assessed under BRE’s new Home Quality Mark. Speaking at the event, Lord Prescott said: “It is great to see a new home like e4 on the market that’s affordable to build and run, quick to

construct, promotes health and wellbeing and has a minimum adverse impact on the environment – a great combination of features that couldn’t come at a better time when housing is in crisis.” “To date the Park has
featured 18 unique projects,” says Director of BRE Innovation Parks Network, Dr David Kelly. “These represent diverse and collaborative approaches to sustainable design, construction and refurbishment which have
pushed the boundaries of current knowledge and practice, driving change across the built environment.” The e4 house was built by brickmaker Wienerberger and designed by engineering and design consultancy ARUP. The house is so called because it emphasises the four principals of energy, economy, environment and emotion. Products featured inside the house include sustainable bathroom products from Ideal Standard. The displays highlight economical water usage and the company’s eco-friendly solutions, such as the Tempo Arc bath with 139 litre capacity, low flush WCs and flow regulated taps and showers.

Renewables and underfloor heating specialist Rehau has unveiled a new display area at the London Building Centre. The new Rehau Hub includes an exhibition space featuring product displays, along with meeting and presentation areas. Products on show include the Rauvitherm and Rauthermex district heating pipework and Raugeo ground source solutions, as well as an
extensive range of underfloor heating, chilled ceiling and Thermally Activated Building systems. Speaking at the event, Rehau’s UK Chief Executive Martin Hitchin said: “It’s now estimated that around 80% of all building projects in the UK are influenced by an individual who is based in London, so our presence here has never been more important.”
Plumbing and heating firm C&J Heating has won the Stevenage Business of the Year at the 2015 Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) Hertfordshire Business Awards. Run by father and son entrepreneur team, Nigel and Lewis Howard, the firm has been recognised for a number of achievements including increasing their turnover by 50% in the last twelve months, overcoming national competitors to win some large scale national heating contracts and becoming the face of the Smart Installer
Club for national business HomeServe Alliance. Lewis (pictured above) comments: “We are over the moon to win Stevenage Business of the Year at this year’s FSB awards and would like to thank our employees and customers for all of their support. The FSB awards are all about recognising SMEs and the hard work and dedication we put in every day. The big players often get all the credit in the heating industry, so it is great to be able to fly the flag for the smaller heating businesses across the country.”
Handy hints guide Available from Worcester is a new Handy Hits guide that installers can pass on to their customers as part of their handover process. The launch of the guide follows research from the boiler manufacturer which revealed that 45% of homeowners in the UK do not understand their heating and over two thirds admit to not knowing how to use their controls.
The guide covers advice on radiators, servicing and top tips for saving energy and reducing running costs. An extensive frequently asked questions section also provides the end user with a first port-of-call should they ever have any technical queries. The free guide can be ordered by calling 0330 123 9119 or by emailing brochurerequest@uk.bosch.com.

Richard Wilson (centre) from North East Scotland College and Sugplumb, winner of SNIPEF SkillPLUMB competition
The 40th Annual SNIPEF SkillPLUMB competition was won by Richard Wilson, a third year plumbing apprentice from Aberdeen who works for Sugplumb. North East Scotland College, where Richard studies, hosted the event in June. A total of 13 participants from colleges and training centres across Scotland competed in the competition, which involves practical exercises in copper pipework and lead work. The work of
the participants is assessed and marked by a panel of technical experts. Second prize was awarded to Algirds Balta, of Borders College, employed by Greenheat Renewables in Roslin, and third place went to Matthew Gorrie of Perth College UHI, who works for L.W. Haddow Plumbing and Heating Ltd, Perth. Richard may go on to represent Scotland at SkillBUILD UK in Birmingham in November.
as soon as the temperature dips to 9°C, homeowners and installers alike begin
taking a greater interest in Drayton’s products, and this meant a noticeable spike in the number of visitors to the website. “We’ve been analysing the data and it’s clear to see that as soon as the temperature hits 9°, people begin to take more of an interest in their home heating,” says Product Manager David Kempster. “For installers, this is the
ideal time to recommend controls installations and upgrades to customers so that systems can work as efficiently as possible before the colder months set in. In doing so, installers can boost their business from the additional work required.” To find out more about the Drayton 9° Network, visit: www.draytoncontrols. co.uk/9degrees

We are starting to see lots of press around the ErP, with the launch of seminars, etc, to explain what it all means for installers. This is actually good – it’s nice to see manufacturers and suppliers informing installers of legislation changes and what they need to do to comply. This regulation comes into effect on 26 September, so installers need to be aware. However, I am having trouble finding how the ErP will benefit anyone: for the installer it just means more paperwork and more time to complete it. Are we expected to do this for free? For the end user, they will have the same boiler as you are fitting now, maybe a slight change as they will have to have modulating pumps inside, but that is the only change. From September 26th the boiler will now have a sticker on it giving some basic information, and the same will apply to hot water cylinders. These labels will rate the appliance A, A+, A++ and so on, pretty much the same as you see on your washing machines now. I would like to know how exactly will this label save the end user money on their heating costs. For the end user to save on running costs, several factors come into play: the temperature the system is run at, what room temperature the homeowner requires, the heat loss of the building, and how long they run their heating each day. I don’t see how a label on the boiler will have any effect on these points. To give an example: A customer comes to you and asks for a new heating system, as
theirs is very expensive to run. You install the system and add controls that make the system as efficient as possible, you complete the fiche and rate the system A+, but this property has poor insulation and, once fitted, the homeowner runs the system as they did before, having the room stat set to 25ºC, leaving the heating on all day and night. They will not be making much savings, and the next thing you know is they are complaining that you have ripped them off. I think it is far more important that the focus is on insulation first, then educating the homeowner. The only real way they will save money is by making changes to how they use their heating systems. In all truth, if they spent money on insulation and learnt to time their heating and set the room stat to a lower temperature, maybe upgrade heating controls, they would save money without the need for a new boiler. I fail to see how this ErP sticker will achieve any running cost savings for the end user – it just seems pointless to me and just more bureaucracy, but if anyone can explain how it will save the homeowner money on their fuel bills, I am all ears. My other concern is how long before they decide we need yet another ACS to carry out ErP paperwork and fiche reports at yet more expense to installers. I thought the talk was of cutting red tape and bureaucracy for businesses, but for the heating industry, we seem to be having more and more heaped onto us. Christopher Flaherty Via email
Grief with gas registration I read with continued irritation about Gas Safe cracking down on illegals. I thought CORGI were over the top, and it appears Gas Safe are now taking the same line.
It is ridiculous to prosecute an operative who is registered for an employer, but prosecuted for carrying out work unrelated to the employer. Additionally, simply having a piece of paper stating you have passed an assessment fails to recognise competence. Geeks taking most of the assessments are capable of passing, but without experience and background knowledge they would be a loose cannon. Far better to pay a nominal amount to have the name recorded wherever Gas Safe want it. An operative would then be able to continue working without discriminating about who the job is being done for (whether that’s a builder, a self-employed basis or for a neighbour or friend). Gas Safe would receive a nominal amount for including duplicate

entries and a more transparent system would be available. When I recall my five years apprenticeship in the services (and evening classes for four years) I believe that operatives now have a very narrow view of what their work entails. An item in question is flues and how they work. Only recently have flue gas analysers come to the fore, but one really should have the background knowledge of gas flow, combustion and the like to be able to work safely with flued appliances. There continue to be companies carrying out gas work with unregistered operatives because of cost. Perhaps having people on the ground accompanying gas workers observing their skills might encourage companies to have their people registered. No work days would be lost because one or two ‘certifying’ operatives could sign off all the work. Graham Sitton Via email

Roadshow spreads the word The Plumb and Parts Center Understanding ErP roadshow comes to an end in Plymouth in July, having visited 40 different locations in a bid to provide a better understanding of the forthcoming Directive. PHAM News, official media partner, reports on some positive feedback.
W
hen the idea was first proposed to organise a national tour to highlight the implications of a new European Directive, some might have thought it wise to have low expectations of the number of installers who would be eager to attend – especially when you would be asking them to give up their free time after a long working day. A tour of 40 different venues around the country may have looked overambitious, but the level of interest shown by installers has more than justified the investment made by Plumb and Parts Center and supporting manufacturers. A presentation on the Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive is perhaps not the most enticing event
Installers turned out in large numbers at the events staged at Portman Road in Ipswich (left) and Stadium MK in Milton Keynes
to have been staged at the likes of Stamford Bridge and Aintree Racecourse, but many of the installers who attended the evening seminars said that they were glad they made the effort to find out more. Attendance levels varied, but at some venues it was a case of standing room only as visitors listened to a series of presentations
about the forthcoming new energy labelling system and how the labels are calculated. Although one or two of the installers expressed some cynicism about the imposition of more red tape and unnecessary extra work, others agreed with the view that the new energy labelling scheme could help to generate
demand for more energy efficient heating solutions. “It’s a good opportunity to get consumers more interested in their heating systems,” said one installer at the Ipswich event. “It should be a useful tool to help explain how they can improve their energy rating. I can see why some installers may think that it’s an extra bit of hassle
that they can do without, but if used in the right way I think it could encourage customers to invest in better quality products.” The great majority of the installers who attended the events considered it time well spent and appreciated the opportunity to find out more about how the labelling system would affect their business.
“I didn’t know too much about the ErP before tonight, but I was aware that something was due to happen this September,” said a Milton Keynes installer. “I’m glad I came because it’s helped to clarify things and it’s been useful to get an update on what some of the manufacturers have done to get their products ready.” By the time you see this issue there will only be three more opportunities to attend one of the events. The roadshow is set to visit Sandown Racecourse (14th July), the Gillingham Priestfield Stadium (15th) and Plymouth’s Borington Park Golf Club (16th). The new generation of Prestige wall hung boilers from ACV are now available. With an extended range of 4 models in sizes 50kW, 75kW, 100kW and 120kW there is a prestige boiler suited to almost every commercial application. At the core of the Prestige is ACV’s unique, self-cleaning stainless steel heat exchanger, developed and improved after intensive research and laboratory testing. The use of stainless steel provides unparalleled resistance to corrosion and the additives used in modern heating systems; we believe the durability of the material makes it a reliable and efficient choice. Further innovation in the new generation of Prestige boiler is the all new ACVMAX® system control, which has been designed to be flexible yet easy to use. The new control panel with integrated manometer and LCD provide all the necessary information with the simple push of a button. As well as monitoring the boiler to ensure optimal efficiency, the ACVMAX® offers many advanced control options, including control of up to 4 boilers in cascade without the extra expense of an additional controller, and native support for open protocols such as OpenTherm® 3.2 and Modbus® enabling easy integration into Building Management Systems (BMS). Operating the Prestige in cascade offers a modulation ratio of 1:73 a highly flexible output from the minimum output of one unit to 100% of the combined power of all the boilers. Prestige boilers can be installed in a cascade from 2 to 8 units with a maximum combined output of 920kW. A cascade installation greatly improves the system efficiency and
fuel usage resulting in reduced running costs and helps keep emissions to a minimum. The prestige boiler also now comes with an integrated non-return flue valve to make fluing options easier when considering a cascade system. The new prestige boiler has been developed for ease of installation, maintenance and efficiency which will benefit the installer and end user. All parts are serviceable from the front of the unit by removing the front cover, which cuts down on service time. The improved ACVMAX® system control also has an easy menu structure which covers up to 80% of standard installations, easy diagnostics and full text error messages and problem solving information. The connections on the underside of the prestige give easy access during installation with the added benefit of being in the same position as the previous models. All the accessories required for a cascade installation are available from ACV.

Helping to bridge the skills gap Recent reports have suggested that Britain is facing its biggest skills shortage for a generation, with qualified plumbers and engineers in short supply. Gary Millar, Head of Technical Training at Ariston, looks at what manufacturers can do to help bridge the skills gap.

So, what can heating hile the economy appears to be in a manufacturers do to encourage better state than more skilled workers to pick 18 months ago, there is a up the tools? Well, there are real risk that the shoots of two initiatives that should recovery will be stunted by take priority: training and the scarcity of skills. Recruitment existing and future installers consultant Manpower Group with the skills required to UK has already gone on record Gary Millar from Ariston grow their businesses. At saying that one in three of the largest construction companies have had Ariston, for example, we offer installers the to turn down work on big projects due to a opportunity to participate in theory sessions and hands-on, practical classroom experience shortage of skilled labour. The Union of Construction, Allied Trades with live gas and water connections. understanding any product-specific fault codes). If installers can continuously raise their standards, not only will their skill sets improve, so too can profitability. After all, being able to fit and work on a greater array of products casts a much wider net in terms of customers. In addition, installers armed with the latest industry knowledge and trends will already be one step ahead of their competitors.
Key sector Plumbing and heating is a key part of the UK’s construction industry, which is why the Government skills funding agency features details of training opportunities and apprenticeship schemes on its website. Apprenticeships are available at intermediate and advanced levels, teaching those who enrol about the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and components. They will be working under minimal supervision to complete the installation and maintenance of domestic hot water, cold water, sanitation, drainage, rainwater systems, central heating systems, and components.
At the advanced level, the skills base is broadened, enabling apprentices to enter the profession at a higher level. For example, advanced apprentices will be able to complete and oversee work to install, service, maintain and commission domestic plumbing and heating systems.
Hope for the future There are definitely opportunities to bridge the ‘talent gap’, either through apprenticeship schemes or manufacturers’ training facilities. Training and certification is the best way for installers to convey trust to clients – after all, no one wants to hire someone who doesn’t have all the necessary skills. So, the more trained installers the industry has, the better its reputation will be. The availability of skilled and experienced engineers has reduced over the years, but by working together, the industry can turn things around. By encouraging more apprentices to pick up tools and getting existing installers to add to their skill sets, manufacturers can play a key role in ensuring there are enough skilled heating and plumbing engineers for years to come.

Green Matters 19 EU rules on 5% VAT Market for hybrid heat pumps to rise rate for renewables Consumers buying energy saving materials may soon be faced with a higher rate of VAT following a decision by the European Court of Justice. In a ruling handed down on 4 June, the Court decided that the UK’s longstanding practice of charging just 5% on the supply and installation of goods such as renewables and insulation was in breach of EU law. If the ruling stands, the rate of VAT may rise to 20%. Only applications in the social housing sector will be able to retain the reduced rate. According to the Ground Source Heat Pump Association, it is unlikely the law will change before the 2016 Budget, however installers are encouraged to complete their current installations quickly to ensure they can charge customers the 5% rate. Dave Sowden from the Sustainable Energy
Association says that the UK Government must fight the Court’s ruling. “This is an action by the EU Commission of the most astonishing hypocrisy. In one breath, the Commission and the EU Institutions implore Member States to take efficiency and sustainable energy more seriously – yet in the next, they use legal means to try to abolish the very policies the UK has in place to achieve this. “We need to stand up to Brussels and find legal means of preserving most of our reduced VAT rates.”
Hybrid heat pumps are not fulfilling their potential in European markets, but have the ability to become a key technology according to new research from Delta-ee. The report ‘The state of play of the hybrid heat pump market’, which looks at the technology that combines air source heat pumps and gas boilers, identifies the market opportunities and the barriers to uptake. Delta-ee’s Lukas Bergmann says: “The barriers working against hybrid heat pumps include system complexity, uncertainty over running cost savings, pricing and a lack of knowledge and awareness of the technology among installers.”
The report identifies the UK renewable heat sector as one of three significant
market opportunities in Europe, along with the French retrofit market and the Italian new build market. Delta-ee says with the right targeting of these segments and by addressing the key barriers to the technology, the market has a potential for more than 100,000 units per year. Less than 10,000 units were sold in Europe last year. The analysis from Delta-ee, which features a comprehensive European sales survey as well as insight into the challenges and opportunities for hybrid heat pumps, concludes that unit sales are to at least quadruple by 2020. Designed for a wide range of applications the Eazyview Tradesman is an inspection camera that could help the user to save time and money. In recent field trials to measure the effectiveness of the cameras in real applications, the company says that engineers reported significant time savings ranging from 15 minutes to three hours, with an average time saving of 36 minutes with every use of Eazyview. Eazyview proved particularly useful in finding leaks, locating underfloor valves and pipework, for inspecting flues and seals, and for checking the integrity of heat exchangers and other boiler issues. The device only requires an 8.5mm hole to allow access for its camera and helps to minimise damage
additional works or replacements. “Our high quality image makes fault location quick and easy, and an Eazyview will often pay for itself on just one job,” says Simon Holmes, MD of Eazyview. Waterproof and chemical resistant, the Eazyview Tradesman model records video and over 1000 photos to internal memory and both time and date, job reference or a customer’s name can be stamped on recordings.

24 Installer Profile
How to make a hit with customers Specialising in reactive repair work, Chris Teale founded HITGAS with the aim of giving customers the best possible all-round service in heating and plumbing. Carol Hitchcock recently sat down with Chris to find out how he landed the Dickies Worker of the Year award.
W
hen Chris Teale (34) entered the Dickies Worker of the Year competition last year, he didn’t expect to win, nor did he realise the opportunities the accolade would open up for him and his business. Chris is the owner of Barnet-based HITGAS, and since founding the plumbing and heating firm in 2011 he has built his client base on the strength of quality work and the high standard of customer service he and his two engineers deliver. Winning the 2014 title has brought him not only national exposure, but also another string to his bow when it comes to promoting himself. “It’s difficult to tell somebody that you’re brilliant, so you have to prove yourself with the results of your work, which is something I believe we do,” says Chris. “Winning the Dickies award has been one more way to back up the claims we make as a business.”
It’s all in the name With 6000 other entrants vying for the title Worker of the Year, Chris had to put together a pretty convincing case for why he deserved it. Judges were impressed with the extensive portfolio of work he put forward, but Chris thinks the tipping point for him was his particular take on providing unrivalled customer service.
The ‘HIT’ in HITGAS stands for Honesty, Integrity and Trust
The Dickies Worker of the Year title came with a new car
Chris Teale was the 169th person to become a Master Plumber
“I called my company HITGAS, with the HIT standing for ‘honesty’, ‘integrity’ and ‘trust’, because I wanted a name that encompassed what we are all about,” explains Chris. “Working in a customer’s home changes the game in how you go about things. There’s only so much valuefor-money a person can see in a pipe – they can see that it’s nice and straight, but if they can also see that you treat their house with respect and go that extra mile to make the installation picture perfect, all the while treating them fairly, they sit up and take notice.” For Chris, good service goes far beyond mere working practices in a client’s home. In his application for Dickies, he highlighted one example of coming through for a customer which well illustrates his broader set of values. “I had been working hard all day in London on a difficult project, and when I got home all I wanted to do was go to bed,” Chris explains. “But in the early hours of the morning, the phone went with an emergency call from an elderly lady saying water was gushing from a radiator and she didn’t know what to do. Her husband, who had dementia, had removed the radiator pin and she was in a real panic. I was able to calm her down a bit by telling her to stick a carrot in the
leaking radiator to block the flow and assured her I’d get there straightaway. Very sleepily I climbed out of bed, got to my van, only to find it had a flat tyre. I ended up running there on foot, tools in hand, isolated the radiator and put the pin back in. It was a simple job for me, but for her it was an enormous relief in a very stressful situation.” The next morning, Chris returned to the customer’s house to vacuum up the water and dry the carpet with a fan heater. The lady was so impressed with Chris’s handling of the problem that she asked him to carry out a boiler service too. It’s probably safe to assume that HITGAS will be a permanent entry in her contacts book.
Master Plumber While winning a commercial award like Dickies Worker of the Year has its benefits – not least of which is the shiny new Suzuki S-Cross that came with the title – Chris can also lay claim to a clutch of industry honours and accreditations. Two years ago he earned the right to call himself a Master Plumber, which is something fewer than 200 people in Great Britain can rightly do. Chris is also a member of the CIPHE and the Engineering Council. Plus he has gone to the trouble of getting his business certified to ISO 9001, a quality management system that shows his ability to consistently provide products and services that meet the needs of customers. HITGAS is also registered with TrustMark, a not-for-profit organisation licensed by Government and supported by consumer protection groups that helps homeowners find tradespeople working to the highest of standards. “Having industry qualifications is key and is one reason that I emphasise ongoing training, both for me and my two engineers. I like to think my work speaks for itself, but it’s an added endorsement to have the accreditations. It may be a piece of paper, but it’s a piece of paper that says you’ve sat in a classroom and learned something,” he says. Since being crowned by Dickies, Chris has gone on to earn another privileged place in the commercial world. Last December he was selected to become the official ‘Face’ of Which? Trusted Traders, a competition that involved him undergoing a rigorous assessment process to earn the honour. Like TrustMark, Trusted Traders enables householders to go online to find reputable installers in their area.

As the current title holder with Dickies, Chris will have the opportunity to participate in the next round of Worker of the Year for 2015. He will be a Judge on the panel that evaluates applications and be responsible for interviewing the handful of finalists in the search for the next winner. “I suppose it’s been such an accolade for me because I come from a working class background and this award celebrates the best of that world,” says Chris. “Having been in the business for going on 20 years, I feel honoured that I was chosen.”

KNOW HOW
Any installer who takes pride in their work and the high standard of customer service they provide never simply completes a project and walks away without offering some kind of back-up service in case of maintenance issues. And the same can be said for Geberit. For us, looking after our customers is not just about providing our products and then moving on to the next sale. We want installers to be confident in the brand, the products and the services we provide. Offering technical support, free training and a dedicated after-sales service are all important factors of the Geberit Knowhow – giving our customers confidence that they haven’t just chosen a product, but a complete service. From time to time nothing beats talking to someone in the know in order to prevent too much head-scratching when installing and carrying out maintenance on wallhung systems. Sometimes just a little reassurance that you are doing things right or some tips on how to make things even better can go a long way. That’s why our technical team are only ever a phone call away. Our Area Managers too have relationships with their customers that go far beyond the sale, and are there to offer advice and support along the way.
Online service Of course, it’s not always necessary to even pick up the phone, due to the amount of tools we have created that are at your disposal. Spanners and wrenches may be essential pieces of kit for installers, but we also recognise that a well-resourced website is another one. Again, for us, a website shouldn’t just be there to help sell products, it’s a goto tool for information gathering for our customers while they’re working. From a fully searchable product catalogue to details of our latest training dates, it’s all there. And because sometimes it’s nice to have a little back-up during the fitting process, installers can access a whole wealth of step-by-step videos on the Geberit YouTube channel that will guide the way.

Because installers are busy people who rarely, if ever, sit in front of a computer screen, all of this can be accessed via a mobile phone or tablet, thanks to the Geberit ProApp. Giving you Know-how at your fingertips, this handy tool provides immediate access to product information. Not only will it help identify products installed, it can also
help you find technical and installation details of the products about to be installed and makes ordering spare parts a breeze. Back-up whenever and wherever you need it is important, but so is the reassurance that the products you install will stand the test of time. It’s all well and good fitting the latest sanitary technology today, but will it be fixable should it need to be five, 10 or even 20 years down the line? The only way of guaranteeing this is by knowing that the spare parts will be available, which is why we offer a 25 year spare parts guarantee.
Components can be easily accessed by simply removing the flush plate
Easy access So the product’s available and simple enough to order, but is maintenance likely to cause a headache? One of the main preconceptions of wall-hung sanitaryware, among both installers and end users, is that maintenance, should it ever be required, will cause a lot of mess and hassle – after all, the cistern is hidden behind the wall so it’s going to take some work to get at it, right? Not so with a little Geberit Know-how. That’s because all the internal components of the cistern can be accessed easily simply by removing the flush plate, with no tools required: • Sigma plates are lifted from the base of the plate where they are spring mounted • Kappa plates are spring mounted from the left • If a pneumatic button is being used, an access hatch will have been installed either through a removable panel or shelf so that you can still gain access to the components. From initial installation through to aftersales and maintenance, having the Geberit Know-how means you’re well-supported on every job. View our installation videos to find out more

28 STEP by step
Retrofitting a multizone system Controls technology has developed rapidly over the last five years with a big increase in demand for smart heating controls. Steven Hancock, Director of Staffordshire based Mere End Consultants and Plumb Arena, provides a guide to installing the Honeywell evohome system.
H
ere at Mere End Consultants we get a lot of customers with medium to large properties asking about the benefits of installing smart heating controls, and our answer is simple – the benefits are huge! We always like to go through the property specifications with the homeowners to find out what they already have and what they would like to get out of smart heating controls. Once this is agreed, we then go through our system builder checklist as it is essential to know what products are needed. This particular home had two separate heating zones – upstairs and downstairs – and they wanted to control up to 12 zones. As they also wanted to control their hot water (Megaflo hot water cylinder) we decided that the best product in this case was the Honeywell evohome system. Before going in to install the system, we like to carry out a functionality check to ensure the new control system will work in the home. Once this is done and we are happy with the best place to install the controller, we go through each zone to determine timings and temperatures for the system. Then it is time to draw up the heating plan. When the customer is happy with this we source the products and get a date booked in for the installation. The products needed for this installation were: one evohome controller (and wall mounting kit), 17 wireless radiator controllers and a hot water kit.
(1) Before we start dismantling the boiler and the old controls in the home, we do a signal strength test using a wireless kit consisting of a wireless thermostat and a BDR boiler relay. We move to the furthest points throughout the house to check that the controls signal from the proposed controller location is received loud and clear.
(2) Once we are happy with the signal, we move on to
checking out the existing wiring at the boiler, the programmer, room/cylinder thermostats and also the main wiring centre and zone valves located in the airing cupboard. Before proceeding, it’s important that we establish that the existing system is operating correctly. Carrying out routine electrical checks makes life easier and is also important for safety. We trace the wires by exposing the timer and look for the switch’s live signal to the boiler. For best practice we label all the wires at the boiler and wiring centre adjacent to the hot water cylinder.
28_V2.indd 1
Note: Before any smart control installation, installers should check the manufacturer’s installation instructions for the boiler and research the specific wiring requirements, especially where permanent live supplies for pump overruns are required. Also, any specific requirements for a hydraulic system bypass must be observed.
(5)
Once all the wiring in the system is complete, we move onto the radiators and fitting the wireless radiator controllers. It’s always important to check whether the radiator controllers need additional adaptors or if they can simply be screwed onto the existing TRV using the standard M30 adaptor supplied with each radiator controller. It’s certainly worth checking out this requirement at the survey stage!
(3) Moving to the Megaflo hot water cylinder, the existing system has three zone valves: One for domestic hot water (which remains operational) and two heating zone valves. We make the latter valves redundant (and locked in an open position) so that the evohome system can operate to its full potential, as new radiator controllers now cater for multi-zone control. We electrically isolate the heating zone valves to keep the system safe. To allow integrated hot water control, we remove the existing redundant hot water cylinder thermostat and insert a new evohome NTC sensor in the Megaflo’s dry sensor pocket. Note: Unvented hot water cylinders such as the Megaflo also have an integrated overheat thermostat wired in series with the cylinder thermostat. This de-energises the hot water zone valve in the event of an overheat fault. It is vital that we maintain the functionality of the overheat thermostat and it should be rewired in exactly the same way.
(4) Now it’s time to fit the hot water sensor transmitter, which provides the wireless transmission between the cylinder and the evohome controller. We also install wireless BDR relays to switch the boiler live supply and to operate the hot water zone valve. For ease of installation and appearance, we use single gang pattress boxes for transmitter and BDR relays. It’s important to keep transmitters and BDR relays at least 30cm apart to avoid any signal interference. The great thing about evo is that it simplifies the whole wiring system. Trunking the wires and labelling them keeps the install neat and helps to make life easy if any future work needs to be carried out on the system.
(6) Once all the radiator controllers are in place, they are
ready to bind to the main evohome controller. Consulting the heating plan and the homeowners, we name the zones in the home. It is best to clear the evohome controller of all pre-programmed zones and replace them with the ones that you have agreed with the customer.
(7) Once this is all programmed in, it’s simply a case of

Practical and stylish storage solutions Space saving in bathrooms has become big business as homeowners look to maximise the use of one of the busiest rooms in the house. Gemma Cornes, Product Manager at Twyford, gives an insight into the multitude of products available to make the most of this trend.
N
ext to the kitchen, the bathroom is the second most important and busiest room in the house, leading some homeowners to look at adding a small en-suite for extra flexibility. At the same time, there is a growing trend for multi-generational households, with students returning home, youngsters staying on while they save for deposits and older parents being cared for. This marked social change, with Gemma Cornes, Twyford all of these other factors, is putting pressure on the bathroom, with ever more being asked of it. You may think this poses a headache for installers, feeling you have to squeeze in a toilet, basin, shower or bath plus all-important storage, but this isn’t true anymore. Manufacturers are now on the case and constantly developing products that make small spaces work extra hard to deliver real everyday user-friendliness, without forcing the homeowner to compromise on style, quality or enjoyment.
Tricks of the trade Short projection toilets and washbasins maintain all the functionality of standard models without eating into the bathroom floor space. Oblong shaped washbasins with a shorter forward projection and combined with a vanity unit are a good option because they are space conscious. A wider washbasin offers a proper basin size, while features such as an integrated shelf also provide somewhere for soap and toothbrushes to be easily at hand. Inset towel rails on the side of a vanity unit provide a neat place for a hand towel to be stored away. The space above the washbasin also offers up some options for installers and a mirror cabinet is a great choice. It combines valuable storage, which doesn’t impinge on the bathroom space because of its narrow projection,
Extra storage with furniture options from the e100 range

with the sleek lines of the mirror reflecting the light to make a bathroom look bigger. Mirror cabinets with fold-down doors which double up as extra shelves are especially popular because they keep everyday toiletries at eye level for easy access.
On the up
Shower spot You can put the dead space in a corner to good use by installing an offset quadrant-shaped shower tray and enclosure because the sliding doors don’t encroach on to the precious bathroom floor area, or fit a corner washbasin and vanity unit to add more useful storage into the mix. It’s worth considering ceramics and furniture that are wall-hung when dealing with small bathrooms. This approach is becoming increasingly common as more buildings are being designed with the plumbing to accommodate wall-hung ceramics. They are an excellent choice for compact bathrooms because they offer a more minimalist appearance and a so-called floating effect, meaning they are not taking up much space. The associated pipes and cistern for a wall-hung toilet are all hidden, making for the tidy and streamlined look homeowners like. Of course, as well as the illusion of space, a wall-hung suite also means the floor is much easier to clean, which is always a bonus for the homeowner.
You can also make the most of vertical space by fitting tall units in a bathroom or en-suite as an ideal solution for organising storage to give an uncluttered look. Even better, if space allows, fitting two side by side works really well as they can be used by different family members, whether ‘his and hers’ or ‘adults and kids’. Really, the key to successfully installing a compact bathroom is to factor in the considerations of all of its users, whilst maximising the space available to meet their needs. There is so much choice out there now that the job has certainly become easier.

How to address space constraints In response to the trend in new-build homes incorporating smaller family bathrooms, and the growing popularity of adding in en-suites, Twyford developed the e200 space-saving range of ceramics and furniture. The collection is said to be characterised by smart design and clever features that bring bigger-bathroom benefits to compact spaces. The 320mm corner handrinse basin and 500mm corner washbasin make the best use of corner spaces, and shortprojection offset washbasins provide a useful shelf feature to free up valuable space. A square design, compact, wallhung toilet also maximises space and
features Twyford’s Flushwise watersaving technology. Fashionable furniture is available in high gloss white and grey and the 500 and 650mm furniture units come with an integrated side towel rail, and door handles can also be used as hanging space. Twyford’s Total Install wall bracket system is available as an optional upgrade on e200. All Energy ceramics come with a 25 year guarantee. The e200 range is part of the Energy Collection from Twyford, which also includes the value-priced e100, the stylish e500 sanitaryware and furniture, plus two shower enclosure ranges, es200 and es400. Making the most of small spaces Homes may be getting smaller in the UK, but that’s no reason to limit creativity in the bathroom. Georgina Spencer, Marketing Manager for Roca, highlights some of the storage ideas and finishing touches that can provide a bit of luxury in the smallest of spaces.
D
Storage essentials
id you know the average British bathroom measures just 1.8m x 1.8m? That’s pretty small and looks set only to get smaller as our population continues to increase, with demand for housing particularly high in cramped inner city areas. You might think that our shrinking washrooms are no place for luxury, but with clever design tricks (many of which don’t cost the earth) and a focus on spacesaving, functional, yet stylish products, your customers can enjoy a ‘spa-like’ experience, even in the smallest cloakroom.
One of the key tricks for making any bathroom look bigger and more ‘expensive’ is removing clutter. You don’t walk into a hotel and get greeted by endless rows of bottles, so by hiding bathroom essentials from view customers can get one-step closer to creating their own high-end washroom – a trick that can be fairly inexpensive too. Think short projection vanity units and mirrored wall cabinets to bounce light around the room. Clever storage ideas include making use of the void under the bath or shower seats that conceal pull out drawers.
Space savers One of the key innovations that has made it possible to create a high-end look in a small space is wall-hung. Whether WCs, basins or general furniture, wall hung offers short projection, less clutter thanks to the removal of pedestals, with cisterns hidden from view and increased cleanliness; wall-hung products can easily be mopped underneath, with nowhere for dust and grime to hide. The technology housed within these ‘wallhung wonders’ has also come on apace. Air injection technology, like that found in our
Wet look
The Duplo installation system from Roca
In-Tank Meridian, negates the need for a cistern entirely, saving even more space (as well as water).
Give your customers Luxury Water
TM
If the space you’re faced with is really tiny, why not suggest a wetroom, an enduring trend that’s ideal for making the best use of really tight areas. This can be achieved by either turning the whole space into a shower area by waterproofing the walls, ceiling and floor, or some segregation can be maintained by using low-level trays and frameless glass screens to create an illusion of seamless space. Underfloor heating is ideal for wet rooms to dry out tiles, keeping grout lines clean, while stopping the floor from being slippy. In general, choosing underfloor heating in the bathroom not only makes this often-cold room warm, it will allow homeowners to choose more of a statement radiator, with larger spacing between rails for towels.
Shower power Everyone loves a shower, now our favourite way to wash, with many small space bathrooms doing away with the bath all together. Large waterfall shower heads are big at the moment, but these are not just the reserve of the shower cubicle. Many family bathrooms have an over-bath shower, a simple and cost-effective solution where space is an issue. Options like our Victoria T shower column with Rain Sense showerhead mean luxury can work in this more traditional configuration, with a thermostatic mixer and easy-to-install benefits allowing the average home to enjoy a slice of luxury. In general the power shower, while providing a high-end washing experience, wastes too much water. Modern showers include aeration to deliver the power feel while actually saving water, proving

Touch of luxury – the Rain Sense showerhead
luxury doesn’t have to come at a cost to the environment.
Tasteful tiling Tiles are often the primary wall covering in small bathrooms and can really elevate a room. Current trends include combining different colours and textures, and large format tiles, which are easier to install and look sleek in any scheme. By choosing large tiles, grout is minimised, reducing the potential for discoloured grout that will ruin a high-end look. Alternatively, why not go for a coloured grout – a new approach that will make a bathroom bang on trend, while removing potential fading issues.
Finishing touches The devil’s in the detail, and a few special finishing touches will help elevate a bathroom space. Taps are one such detail, with the latest trends including easy-clean chrome and smooth bodies, with no visible holes where a pop-up waste would usually be fitted. Smooth bodied taps can even make life easier for installers. Our newest ranges incorporating smooth bodies have ½in tails, making them simple to fit, as well as helping customers with low pressure. Mixer taps are becoming commonplace, with separate hot and cold taps out of fashion – although for more traditional bathrooms these may be more appropriate. Taps have also joined the WC and basin on the wall, for the ultimate in contemporary design. Some of the most high-tech taps pay as much attention to how water flows out of them as to how they look on the basin, with flow straighteners (ideal for low pressure bathrooms) and even waterfall functions. Our new Singles Open range sees water flow in a circular waterfall, delivering a luxury, statement feel for the most on-trend bathrooms. Water saving is still on the agenda too, with an integrated flow limiter, which mixes in air to give the power feel without the water wastage. With clever design tricks and the right products, anyone can have a bathroom to be proud of. Help your customers create a small-space spa in their homes – a solution for even the tiniest of London flats. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

On top of the latest trends Homeowners want advice on how to be more creative in the bathroom, so it’s important to be aware of the latest design trends and style options – so says Mark Stratford, Bristan’s New Product Development Manager.
A
s a growing number of homeowners look to refresh rather than completely refurbish their bathroom, it’s important for installers who want to offer a more personalised service to be aware of the latest bathroom trends. The good news is that one easy way they can do this is by investing a small amount of time into exploring the latest bathroom trends, and the products that not only tick the right boxes for energy saving, but for customer style aspirations too. As we pass the mid-point of 2015, it’s time to step back and take stock of the trends which have emerged in the first half of the year. This year, the bathroom has evolved into a living area, with more and more homeowners placing a higher emphasis on style than ever before. This presents a wealth of opportunities for installers, especially for those with a strong understanding of key design trends which they can recommend to their customers.
For the already time-stretched installer, finding the time to keep up-to-date with the latest interior and bathroom design trends may seem an impossible task, so here are three key areas that savvy installers should make sure they know about.
Accessorise Whilst the economy has steadily begun to recover, there is still an atmosphere of caution, reinforcing the ‘improve not move’ attitude from homeowners. Therefore, for homeowners looking to refresh their bathroom updating their accessories and replacing smaller fittings can be the perfect solution, providing a great opportunity for installers to advise on tap styles and how different designs fit into a wider bathroom décor. In terms of product finish, sleek chrome remains as popular as ever. However, this year has seen colour coming back into the bathroom, which instantly injects new life into tired bathrooms.
There has also been rising demand for European styles, as British consumers look to the latest overseas designs for inspiration. A very popular feature at the moment is crossheads which flare downwards slightly, almost like petals, which provides a refined shape to the design.
Mix and match Whether it’s textures, styles or colours, this year consumers have been creating unique designs by taking a mix and match approach. The combination of different materials has proved popular, with installers seeing more eclectic bathrooms in homes, which feature wood and metallic themes being brought together, and most recently, a marriage of classic and contemporary design elements. When advising a homeowner on how to get a mix and match look, it is sometimes easiest to actually accompany them to a showroom so they can ensure the contrasts
which seem like a good idea in theory actually work together in practice.
Modern touch Continuing the mix and match theme, installers may find that customers want to adopt the latest technology whilst maintaining an overall classic look for their bathroom. Mixer showers with digital technology, for example, are a simple way of striking that balance without having to engage in serious remodelling. With digital showers, such as our Artisan Evo, the shower mixing unit can be installed away from the shower area itself. This means that it can be installed quickly and easily without breaking through tiles, with the wireless controller fitted anywhere within the showering area to offer a contemporary stylish solution that meets the needs of the modern consumer. Equally, a traditional style tap
Bristan’s Artisan Evo shower
with a contemporary twist can be a subtle way of achieving a modern classic style without creating too steep a contrast. Our Cascade range, for example, is based on a traditional crosshead design, but takes inspiration from a trapezoid shape, which adds an interesting modern twist to the taps. It can be all too easy to forget that homeowners also value guidance when it comes to style. Staying up to date with the latest design trends gives installers another opportunity to connect with clients and keep one step ahead of the competition. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Overcoming the drainage issue Installing a new bathroom in spaces that don’t have access to drainage doesn’t have to be difficult. Ann Boardman from Saniflo UK offers some top tips for creating bathrooms in tricky locations.
T
hanks to macerators and pumps, it’s possible to fit a bathroom, cloakroom or en-suite anywhere a water supply can reach. It’s a good thing too, given the growing trend of single households (the number of single person households growing by 166,000 a year) and the ageing population that would rather stay at home than go into care, which may mean adapting or creating extra bathroom facilities. Macerators and pumps are designed for unconventional situations where a water supply can reach but drainage is a problem. Basements, lofts, garages, even under-stairs cupboards can all become bathroom spaces with the use of macerators and pumps and compact bathroom products.
No limits There’s a wide range of pumps and macerators perfect for awkward spaces whether that’s adding a bath in the basement, a loo in the loft or a shower under the stairs, all providing the industry with an opportunity to think adventurously about using all the available space, no matter how seemingly impossible. In a loft conversion, for example, space is particularly limited for an en-suite in the rafters. You can hide a pump or macerator in the triangular loft space next to the room and this is enough to service a WC, wash basin and shower, giving you a more complete en-suite rather than just a WC and basin. Even an under-the-stairs cupboard can be converted with a WC that has a built-in macerator, meaning there’s no need for a bulky cistern, which allows extra space for the door to open inwards without compromising on access. Ceiling height can be an issue in conversions. A great showering solution for these lower ceiling spaces is a
The extra slim Sanipack can take waste from a WC, basin and shower. It is designed to be concealed from view where back-to-wall or wall-hung sanitaryware is used.
shower cubicle in a shorter version designed specifically for such awkward spaces. Cubicles offer a swift and hassle-free showering solution for any shape or size of bathroom and en-suite. In most cases, you can have a watertight enclosure (without using silicone), complete with the shower, controls and doors fitted and ready to enjoy in less than two hours. As with fitting any shower there are just three main considerations: floor construction, waterproofing, and drainage. The quality and reliability of the products used are essential.
On the low A low-level shower tray will contribute less to the overall height of the shower. Using complete self-contained cubicles will save time, as the installation process is less disruptive, partly because no tiling is required. A cubicle can even fit over the existing decor. Let’s consider the option of creating a new bedroom and bathroom in the roof space of a property, one where the existing drainage infrastructure isn’t adequate for a traditional bathroom solution. In such a scenario it will be important to cleverly
hide macerator pumps behind a wall in the new bathroom and you might need a solution for the WC and basin and another for the shower. If hidden, it’s essential to guarantee easy access. This could be achieved by proving a large hatch in the adjoining bedroom, for example.
Cost saving Achiev ing a beaut if ul contemporar y en-suite bathroom that makes life more comfortable adds value to the property. It also saves on the cost of expensive groundworks, made possible with macerators and pumps, even within the existing drainage footprint. So, rest assured that the next time you’re presented with a seemingly impossible request for a new bathroom, whether it’s domestic or commercial, before dismissing it and saying it’s not possible, look at the wide variety of macerators and pumps available today and seek professional, technical input from the manufacturer. You’ll not only fulfil the dream of your client, but you could also save them a lot of money, time and hassle. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Providing more consumer choice The bathroom and showers market continues to evolve as the industry responds to demand for safer thermostatic controls and a wider range of options to enhance the experience of the end-user. Helen Clark, Marketing Manager at Abode, tracks the latest trends.
O
ur industry never stays still. It’s great to be involved in an industry where so much development and technology takes place and, from a consumer’s perspective, it means there are so many products to choose from. One sector that has seen a significant amount of development is the showering market. Over recent years we at Abode have seen the trend of increased sales of thermostatic products Helen Clark from Abode over that of manual mixing products. We’ve seen an aesthetic move from consumers looking for a more minimal style product and approach to their bathroom décor. The term ‘less is more’ springs to mind, where the desire and demand for products to be sleeker, thinner and hidden has become very prominent. Consumers no longer want large bulky products within their bathroom which can take up valuable space – instead they are opting for a more streamlined approach, products that can undertake multiple functions, and at the same time eradicate any hidden dirt traps, like concealed shower valves.
Multiple choice When considering concealed shower valves, we’ve seen a trend towards dual exit showers, giving the consumer more choice and more experiences so they can have that overhead showerhead as well as a hand held one. Likewise, a new market of three exit showers is emerging in cases where the shower control is also providing the bath filling function or whereby a shower head has multiple functions which can work together. The options are almost endless. Developments haven’t just stopped at the valve either. There’s the move towards slimmer showerheads, such as the Abode Storm 3mm stainless steel heads, which consumers can obtain in a variety of shapes, from the conventional square and circular ones to rectangular and
The Tempeau thermostatic system fits easily under a bath
Abode’s Storm slimline waterfall showerheads are in demand
oval designs, as well as a multitude of sizes so that the consumer can trade up to the larger size for that more ‘all over’ body showering feel. In addition, consumers are becoming more comfortable and accustomed to the concept of waterfall showers. There’s a great safety story and aspect as well to thermostatic showers and bathing products. Not least the safety aspect and the reassuring aspect of no matter who uses the shower or bath they won’t inadvertently scald themselves. This is key, especially in an age of multi generation homes where the children are staying at home longer and the older are perhaps moving in with their children to be looked after. As we are all aware, government legislation introduced in April 2010 modified the requirement for bath fillers to be thermostatically controlled (Scotland had introduced the same law three years previously). This means that all new-build homes across England and Wales now have devices to limit the temperature of the bathroom water to a maximum of 48°C. That is more than enough for domestic use and it removes the potential for the most serious scalding injuries to happen. However, the new regulations do not currently apply to standard home refurbishments. At Abode we’ve responded to this change by introducing Tempeau – which not only addresses the issue of hot
water scalding, but also helps to make life easier for the installer. At the heart of the system is the Tempeau thermostatic valve design. Connected to the underside of the bath tap deck, it not only delivers hot water at a safe temperature but also enables the user to obtain the best possible flow performance from the UK’s notoriously low pressure hot water systems.
Future trends Moving forward, what can we expect to see? Well, I would suggest that with schemes such as BREEAM and the overall reduced water consumption targets, we will see continued changes to water usage. I also think we will see a continued reduction in manual shower sales and a decreased requirement for low pressure product as more new housing stock is pressurised. Opportunities will be high though, with more new-build homes including a second bathroom/en-suite. Style-wise there’s still a consistency of classic design styles, which marry very well with ceramic and furniture options in the marketplace but emerging trends towards more organic styled products will start to come through, in addition to new finishes and consumers wanting to experiment with different materials and décor styles. www.abodedesigns.co.uk

Recently showcased at London’s iconic OXO Tower, the new collection is said to offer a broad choice of solutions and furniture combinations in delicately chic colour palettes, designed to work harmoniously in any surrounding. The event also saw the launch of the comany’s new AquaBlade flush technology, which uses two powerful plumes to power the wash and a ‘microslot’ system of channels to release a cascade of water from the top of the toilet bowl opening. The AquaBlade system covers every inch of the ceramic which has also been streamlined to give a quieter flush. Commenting on the launch, Ideal Standard’s Anna Burns, says: “We’re very proud of this collection, which I’m confident offers our customers a highly desirable, luxury range with huge commercial potential.”

Flue challenges Keston Boilers has supplied four 55kW Heat Only boilers and a Frame and Header Kit to St Mary’s Abbey in Colwich, Staffordshire, a Grade II Listed property which recently underwent a complete heating refurbishment. Gas Engineer John Hobbs replaced the existing cast iron boilers with the new equipment. One of the reasons he specified Keston was their specialist twin flue capabilities which are designed to meet challenging installations. The flue’s termination point was 13m away from the boiler and the total flue run was 19m.
“What could have been a troublesome installation turned out to be very straightforward,” says John. “This was down to the capabilities offered by the Heat Only twin flue boilers and the technical backup I received from Keston. “I had never seen this type of flue run before and didn’t know if I would need to make alterations to the burner or other components, so having Keston’s high quality technical support available whenever I needed it was really useful.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Equipment from Rinnai has been specified for the Kingsway Sports Centre, a new sports complex in Gloucester. Funding for the project came from Quedgley Urban Village Limited (QUVL) as part of its planning contract with Gloucester City Council to provide the centre for residents of more than 1700 newly built houses. QUVL called on Cheltenham-based MIH to install two Rinnai HDC1500 heaters with two 300 litre buffer vessels on secondary return. The Sports Centre needed a reliable system that would provide hot water with storage for 21 showers serving 15 changing rooms, meeting and function rooms, football pitch, rugby pitch, cricket crease, tennis courts and a BMX track. Adrian Lusty, MD of MIH, says: “I have used Rinnai units on many jobs and found them to be extremely reliable, lightweight and easy to install. At Kingsway the plant room was on the first floor in the roof space so we were able to cost the project slightly cheaper because of the manoeuvrability of the Rinnai units. As well as the 21 showers, the units produce hot water for a small catering kitchen and wash basins in the toilets and referees’ changing rooms.” www.rinnaiuk.com

44 MERCHANT & Distributor News
Meeting the needs of installers Andy Moseley, Branch Manager of City Plumbing Supplies (CPS) in Derby, talks about the importance of customer service and the journey his branch has completed following recent changes to the plumbing and heating division of the Travis Perkins Group.
N
ow that the Derby branch of Plumbing Trade Supplies (PTS) has been converted to a CPS branch, how will this affect your business? “A major programme of investment and change began across the Travis Perkins Group’s plumbing and heating division last year. The main aim of the conversion for both businesses was to take a more targeted approach and build on the strengths of both teams. For CPS this means focusing on small and medium sized installers whilst PTS extends the excellent service it offers to large contracts. The result for my branch, which was previously a PTS, was to become a CPS complete with bathroom showroom and spares counter.”
Derby was one of the first PTS branches to be converted to a CPS. How did installers react to the change? “Our customer feedback found that domestic installers The team behind the new CPS branch in Derby prioritise face-to-face service, product choice and What is the main benefit of the bathroom showroom? availability. This is something that CPS specialises in “The main benefit is the additional sales support that for small and medium businesses, whilst PTS can focus the showroom can provide to our customers. This is a great service offering to get them used to the new layout and showroom. In that takes away the headache of visiting a showroom and addition, we’ve price matched products to demonstrate the pressure of designing a bathroom for time-strapped that the changes won’t affect cost or availability, and if installers.” there were any special agreements in place then these would be carried over. “After taking the time to talk through the changes with each and every customer, we’re now confident that they not only understand why they have a brand new CPS, but also know the benefits on offer and how their needs are being met better than ever before. I’d like to think that every customer went away feeling positive and with a clearer understanding of how to utilise this branch to the advantage of their own business.”
How has service changed to meet customer expectations? “My team can now offer services in three key areas of the business that are located under one roof. The first is a bathroom showroom led by the showroom manager who can plan and design on behalf of the installer. Secondly, we have City Heating Spares offering same-day delivery, and a selection of boiler spares. Thirdly, the general merchant counter offers everyday service and advice. The result is a one stop shop for everything the installer needs which will save them both time and money.”

How do you support installer training? “We hold a lot of open days and seminars for installers looking to get up to speed on the latest product and industry news. Suppliers are also more than happy to use the facility to demonstrate working models on site. In addition, CPS has a dedicated training centre in Bedford to ensure staff are fully trained and can offer customers the highest levels of service.” How have installers’ needs changed in the last decade and how does your new branch format feed in to this? “Since I joined the industry as an apprentice aged 17, there has been a lot of change in the way business is done in the plumbing and heating sector. I would say the main change is that merchants like CPS are no longer just product suppliers, they must now offer installers a design service, a comprehensive portfolio of products, expert knowledge, and a greater understanding of complex issues affecting the industry. “The refurbishment of my branch and the rest of the CPS network, plus other benefits such the creation of bathroom showrooms, the wider availability of spares, and further improvements to product availability and choice, means that our customers have access to more than ever before. As installers are increasingly expected to fulfil a number of roles, including salesman and designer, the merchant must evolve to provide support and advice, as well as the reliable supply of products. We believe that our initiative to put support and knowledge at the centre of the CPS business is paving the way for meeting the needs and demands of installers who are also under pressure to offer the best service possible.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No. www.cityplumbing.co.uk 135

RENEWABLE Technology 45
Education is the key to renewables growth Installer training played a big role in the move to condensing boilers 10 years ago and should be a similar priority if the Government wants to see a wide take-up of renewables – so says Martyn Bridges, Director of Marketing and Technical Support at Worcester. He highlights the importance of education and the need for more entry level courses.
B
ack in 2004, following the introduction of the 2004 Energy Act, the Government brought forward its Microgeneration strategy. It identified actions to tackle the barriers to widespread uptake of energy efficient condensing boilers, and increased training for heating engineers, plumbers and electricians were high on the priority list. This set up encouraged a generation of energy efficient installers and Martyn Bridges Installers need the tools to help communicate with customers coincided with legislation to make condensing boilers mandatory in the UK. saving technologies. In the last decade we’ve seen many Never before had the way the country chose to heat its technological advances such as heat pumps, solar thermal, properties been given such a major ruling to adhere to, and and solar PV, yet there has not been the same level of changing the installation practises of over 100,000 domestic industry collaboration, which has made renewables seem heating engineers was something many had reservations complicated and hazardous for installers. Manufacturers over. The move required collaboration between installers including Worcester have been working to counter this and manufacturers of gas and oil-fired boilers through growing industry narrative ever since. training schemes, such as the Energy Efficiency Installer To install renewable technologies, installers require an MCS Programme. This national programme from the Government Certificate to be proven competent by attending a training was also bolstered by manufacturers’ own training courses, course which is certified by a third party provider. There which played a huge part in is no basic all-round course equipping installers with the to embrace all renewables, “Installers need to be able to explain the knowledge and skill sets so we have created one at benefits of various technologies” required to bring condensing Worcester and aptly called boilers into homes nationwide. As a result, the move was it ‘An introduction to renewables’. The programme aims particularly successful because every installer in the country to encourage participation in ground source heat pumps, was required to complete the programme. air to water heat pumps, air to air heat pumps and solar thermal. While this may offer a degree of support for those Joint effort who are interested, I wholly empathise with installers The introduction of the energy efficiency programme is an trying to navigate renewable technologies without coherent example of industry collaboration which helped to increase guidance from the Government departments. installers’ awareness of the differences of working with condensing boilers, such as the additional condensate pipe Better communication and changes to the incline of the flue. It’s true that the We need to not only acknowledge the positives of installers majority of the time the same principles applied to fitting having the ability to fit the technologies, but also the benefits a condensing boiler as with a non-condensing model, but of them being able to upsell renewables to homeowners. despite this, the training initiative helped enormously Some homeowners remain sceptical and resistant to change, with making it a smooth transition. so installers need to be able to explain the benefits of various Since the Energy Efficient Installer Programme, technologies and also how it will work on a day-to-day we haven’t seen such a coherent initiative from the basis. There are practical considerations – for example, Government to encourage installer enthusiasm for energy radiators which use a heat pump will need to be larger than those used with a boiler. There are also considerations about how different technologies work that homeowners will need to understand such as heat pumps operating at much lower temperatures to a boiler. Education is everything in this industry and manufacturers are most certainly filling in for where the Government has fallen short. There is something fundamentally wrong with a renewable scheme such as MCS where installers often still require additional guidance and training courses to enable them to navigate the bureaucracy. The ErP Energy Labelling Directive is the latest energy initiative set to impact UK installers this September so it’s all hands on deck from us to aid installers through the introduction. We’ve made it a priority to include the ErP Energy Labelling Directive as a module in every relevant training course – using it to explain what the initiative Worcester now offers an introductory course on renewables

Investing in the future There’s no doubt that the last decade has been challenging for installers who are aspiring to be energy efficient and I have spoken to many installers who have invested in MCS but have not had the opportunity to carry out any installations since becoming qualified. With MCS figures decreasing, the Government needs to invest to galvanise interest and enable the industry to edge closer to environmental targets. In the meantime though, installers should be aware that manufacturers are working to support them in this area as much as possible. www.worcester-bosch.co.uk

Renewable Technology
Good grounds for district heating Highlighting the benefits of district heating, Chris Davis, Commercial Director for Kensa Heat Pumps, showcases a ground-breaking system in Bedfordshire and points to some of the ways that installers can maximise the potential of ground source heat pumps.
I
n the 12 months since the launch of the Domestic RHI – the Government’s flagship scheme to grow the market for renewable heat technologies among householders – installers have been predominantly drawn to biomass systems. This has been due to the attractive set of initial biomass tariffs and relatively straightforward (compared to heat pumps) set of installer standards governing the Chris Davis from Kensa installation of biomass under MCS. Large, domestic country residences have been the primary beneficiaries, with the average ‘domestic’ RHI application being in excess of 25kW. However, with both domestic and non-domestic RHI tariffs for biomass having degressed sharply since the beginning of this year, many installers are now beginning to realise that heat pumps, in particular ground source, continue to offer installers, homeowners and business owners alike an attractive opportunity to reduce energy bills and generate an RHI-based income. Installers just need to be savvy about spotting the best opportunities and not necessarily focus solely on the domestic strand of the RHI. The heating of multiple residential properties presents one such opportunity. Significantly for the residential sector, district heating installations are covered by the Non Domestic RHI, which unlike the Domestic RHI also applies to new build as well as existing buildings. This opens up significant opportunities for installers to promote renewable heating solutions to the likes of holiday park owners, private landlords and residential developers by considering a ‘micro district’ ground source heating approach.
An example of this innovative approach is a retrofit project involving nine individual Kensa ground source heat pumps providing heating and hot water to eight newly converted barns and an office block set in a large courtyard in Bedfordshire, all linked to a communal ground collector array. The ambitious £1.3m Grove Farm retrofit project was undertaken by local building company Thameside Construction in the summer of 2014 and involved the conversion of several derelict barns to form luxury 2, 3 and 4 bedroom dwellings for resale. The renovations were completed to a very high spec with underfloor heating throughout, ensuring that the heat pumps run extremely efficiently due to the low outlet temperatures.
New approach
The Grove Farm project features nine Kensa heat pumps and 16 slinky ground arrays
In the past, installers might have attempted to specify a central plant, district biomass system to heat these properties, however the inherent drawbacks and inefficiencies of single boiler district heating systems are overcome using an approach unique to ground source heat pumps being pioneered by Kensa, termed ‘microdistrict’ heating. Multiple heat pumps, one installed in each dwelling, are linked to a communal ground array enabling the system to qualify with Ofgem as district heating, therefore generating 20 years of income under the Non Domestic RHI stream. By providing an individual ground source heat pump for each dwelling, each occupier has complete control over their own heating and hot water system and responsibility for their own bill, meaning the landlord does not have to be concerned with apportioning bills between each property, or indeed the distribution of heat between each home.
DuoWIN - the ultimate combined log & wood pellet biomass boiler Built with hybrid technology, the DuoWIN sets new standards for combined heating with logs and wood pellets all in one compact unit. Where heating is concerned, the DuoWIN provides its users with a choice of using both types of sustainable biomass fuels whilst ensuring maximum efficiencies. Scalable solution The Grove Farm project is a perfect example of the adaptability of the micro district approach. It features a network of 16 slinky ground arrays, as opposed to boreholes, which are located underneath a nearby orchard. The system has been specially designed to ensure that there is sufficient flow rate whether one heat pump or nine are operational at the same time. Kensa supported Thameside Construction with both the MCS accreditation and subsequent RHI application. Upon completion in September 2015, the system will generate the owner a 20 year income via the Non Domestic RHI whilst providing low cost and sustainable heat to its occupiers all year round. The solution is also completely scalable in that a heat network may be as small as two dwellings – perhaps a pair of semi-detached houses – sharing a common borehole; a block of flats linked to a larger communal borehole array; or indeed a cluster of ‘log cabin’ type luxury holiday lodges, linked to a communal collector array. This flexibility therefore allows an innovative technical solution to be employed while allowing the owner of the system to benefit from a long term income generated through the RHI.
Attractive option With significantly more appealing Non Domestic RHI tariff rates for ground source heat pumps now in place and this route available as an option for both existing buildings and – unlike the Domestic RHI – new build, the opportunity for small district ground source heat pump systems is one that installers and heating engineers can now consider as a really attractive option whenever the opportunity to heat multiple buildings arises.

This approach also overcomes many of the other issues typically associated with district heating and biomass systems – there is no need for a plant room, and of course there is no need for fuel storage and logistical management of fuel deliveries or expensive regular maintenance to enable the system to continue to operate efficiently. Importantly, the system architecture also ensures that there are no heat losses through the district distribution pipework, as with the communal ground array, it is the cooler ground side water that is distributed centrally, with each home producing hot water for its heating system via its own individual ground source heat pump.

RENEWABLE Technology Log boiler delivers big savings A log gasification boiler from Eco Angus is helping Aldwick Court Farm & Vineyard provide eco-friendly and cost-saving heating and hot water to the expansive site in Somerset. A purposebuilt barn was constructed to house the Eco Angus Orlan Super 130kW Log Gasification Boiler, the 10,000 litre Akvarterm accumulator tank and the 6m high Nova stainless steel flue.
It was necessary to provide heating and hot water to multiple areas of the farm including farmhouse, visitor centre, function and event rooms, offices and a flat in an affordable, eco-friendly and sustainable way. Blake Ecotec designed and installed the system. The boiler’s 130kW heat output and large loading capacity means it is capable of burning logs, with a moisture content of 1520% up to 100cm in length. The solution works at 91% efficiency and can burn for up to 12 hours continuously. This high efficiency means that during the summer months a single weekly load
will ensure enough hot water is provided to every building on site. Aldwick Court’s new system is compliant with the non domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme and will receive payments over a 20 year period. They will receive RHI payments of 8.8p per kWh of heat generated by the system, a total of approximately £403,900 in government payments. The Eco Angus Orlan Super 130kW Log Boiler solution will also deliver substantial net fuel cost savings of £258,636 across the 20 year scheme. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Hybrid oil system in Cornwall David Ewins, owner of Davanna Heating Ltd in Truro, Cornwall, has been OFTEC registered since starting out in the trade 24 years ago. Recognising the business benefits of expanding into the renewables sector, he became MCS accredited for heat pumps and solar thermal four years ago. David has since carried out a number of high quality, renewable heating installations across the area including a hybrid oil and solar thermal heating system in a four bedroom new-build home on the Padstow coast. He explains: “The property owner, Roger Mason, approached me to advise on the best high efficiency heating system to install in his new home, which is off the gas grid. He is a retired civil engineer and had taken on the major project of demolishing his previous home and building an entirely new property on the site with the help of his two sons who run a local building company. “They were keen to ensure the house was well insulated to give the best heat efficiency and this, coupled with the
fact that Cornwall is a prime area for solar gain, made an oil and solar thermal hybrid system a viable option. “I suggested installing three solar panels on the south facing roof. These would work in tandem with a Warmflow high efficiency oil condensing boiler to power the downstairs underfloor heating and radiators on the second floor. “At the time of installation, oil prices were higher so the aim was to keep oil use to a minimum. Prices have since fallen but on good days, the boiler doesn’t even come on, providing Mr Mason with considerable savings.” Roger Mason echoes these thoughts and says the new heating system
has significantly reduced his annual heating bill. “As our new home is open plan, we expected it to be quite cool but have found that the new heating system works incredibly well. We’re spending far less per year on our heating oil than we did in our old property. “The solar panels on the roof boost our hot water cylinder and we also recycle rainwater to run the washing machine, flush the toilets and water the garden to make the house as green as possible. “Our hybrid oil and solar thermal system is proving to be a highly efficient and eco-friendly solution.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Renewable Technology
On course for renewables success If the UK is to succeed in the drive to lower carbon emissions and raise current levels of energy efficiency, then more installers will need to be trained to work on renewable heating systems. Simon Butcher, Training Manager at Innasol UK, advises on the courses to look for.
C
ompared to some renewable energy solutions, such as solar PV, wind and hydro power, it’s fair to say renewable heating has a bit of catching up to do in terms of securing a watertight reputation and convincing consumers that it is a well-regulated and established form of energy which can be safely installed into their homes. Having a good reputation is important for a number of reasons, not least because it would ensure the longevity and success of the renewable heating sector. This can be secured only one way – through the consistent delivery of expert installations and customer service. This quest for consistent high quality is accomplished through placing strong emphasis on continued professional development and training. Training is important for the development of the renewable heating sector. It is therefore vital that professionals know the training options available to them, which training they are eligible for and when is the right time for them to invest in it. Most importantly, with new training facilities popping up across the UK all the time,
Installers are able to gain a better understanding of renewable technologies at Innasol’s BPEC Approved Training Academy
delegates should ensure that any training they attend is of good quality and aligned with where they are in their careers. There are a number of elements to examine.
First steps The first thing to investigate before applying to attend any course in any industry is whether the course level matches the delegate’s professional level. This is an

important first step, and getting it right almost guarantees that the course will be beneficial. This is as simple as taking the time to speak to the course leader to clarify the entry requirements and outcomes. Secondly, and perhaps unsurprisingly, the course should be taken by a trainer with significant experience and a solid base of relevant knowledge. This might be gained through years in the industry, or years of working with the products in question. Our own training facility uses Innasol Technical Engineers to deliver product specific training, due to their deep technical knowledge. Regardless of where training is undertaken or what course it is, it is always wise to find out the background of your prospective trainer ahead of time and assess whether you are happy with their level of experience before signing up.
Clear objectives Just as important is the mapping out of clear training objectives. Training courses, especially one in a practical industry such as renewable heating, should offer clear objectives from the outset. Delegates should have a clear idea of what they are going to learn and how the learnings will be applicable in their everyday jobs. This point should not be underestimated because training is only useful if it can be clearly and safely applied afterwards. With so much information and practical application throughout the session, it is inevitable that the delegates’ attention will waver at certain points throughout the day. This can be minimised by varying teaching methods throughout the session. These methods should include at least some interactive technology and discussions to encourage practical application outside of the session. Although it may not be high on the list, a good training environment is more important than people might think. If planning to attend a practical course, professionals should enquire about the facilities on offer ahead of time to ensure that they will be working on boilers and heat pumps that will lend themselves to their day-to-day work. Across the board, demand for renewable heating training is increasing and it is
particularly encouraging that the higher levels seem to be most popular amongst the renewable engineers. Perhaps unsurprisingly, biomass training is seeing the highest demand out of all the technologies.
High demand At Innasol, we note particularly high applications for our BPEC solid biomass course, most likely due to the regular tariff degressions on the non-domestic side of the RHI scheme, which are pushing many companies to take on more domestic installation work. These require more formal qualifications, and delegates are responding to this change by making the investment into their long-term future within the sector. The gravitation towards higher qualifications is really encouraging – it shows us that renewable heating businesses are recognising the importance that training has on the long-term growth of their business and of the industry. Not only this, it also proves just how willing our industry is to establish itself as a reputable and honest sector which prides itself on delivering for its customers. Long may it continue.
Available courses Based in Essex, the Innasol Training Academy offers a range of courses for professional installers, including an introduction to renewable technologies, Part L energy efficiency, water heating and heat pumps. Courses on offer include: Solid Biomass – a course that provides an introduction to solid biomass heating, fuel characteristics, supply and combustion, chimney requirements, regulations and standards, plus health and safety guidance. BPEC Heat Metering – a one day course for designers, service engineers and installers, providing advice on the requirements for metering renewable heat installations, the commissioning of heat meter installations, and fault finding, amongst others. RENEWABLE Technology
What you need to know about fitting an ASHP Installing an ASHP shouldn’t be a daunting prospect for an experienced plumbing and heating engineer – especially with the support of a good supplier, says Heather Oliver from Nu-Heat.
A
n air source heat pump is one of the most popular renewable technologies, but there are a number of things to consider before you can be sure that it is the most suitable solution for the property in question. The first thing to check is the existing insulation. A well-insulated property will prevent heat escaping, enabling the heat pump to work efficiently at lower flow temperatures, providing an effective, economic heating system. The insulation present in all new build properties built to Part L1A, and generally those built in the last 10 years, are likely to be suitable for an ASHP. Older properties will require insulation upgrades such as loft, cavity wall and glazing improvements in line with Part L1B of the Building Regulations.
Access to gas In an existing property, an ASHP is most suitable if there is no access to mains gas. This is because the homeowner will see a greater return on investment when compared to the cost of using oil, LPG or electric heating. New build properties that have access to mains gas are still suitable for an ASHP, which will perform very efficiently, and this option is often chosen when aiming to create an eco-home that is not reliant on fossil fuels. Most ASHP installations will fall into the category of permitted development in line with MCS020, so will not require planning permission. However, if the property is listed, in an AONB or Conservation Area, or requires more than one heat pump unit, the homeowner will have to apply for planning permission.
Heat emitters ASHPs operate most efficiently when connected to low temperature heat emitters, such as underfloor heating or a combination of underfloor and radiators. If traditional radiators are the preferred option, they will need to be sized in line with the lower water flow temperatures associated with heat pumps; this means they are generally twice the size than those used with a gas or oil boiler.
Right supplier Having identified the opportunity to install an ASHP, the first step is to find a reputable design and supply company who specialises in integrating renewable technologies. A good supplier will be able to advise on the suitability of an ASHP for the project and provide full heat loss calculations in order to correctly size the ASHP. The supplier should also be able to supply clear installation manuals and user guides.
Installation Installing the ASHP unit is relatively simple for any plumbing and heating engineer. The heat pump controls and pipework layout are very similar to
a traditional gas or oil boiler, configured as a Y or S plan industry standard layout. The ASHP is simply placed on a flat concrete base external to the property with the appropriately sized flow and return heating pipes and electrical power cable running from the unit into the property. The electrical work should then be carried out by a qualified electrician in the conventional way as you would for a gas or oil boiler On completion of the first and second fix installation of the mechanical and electrical heat pump components, the unit will be ready for commissioning. This element of the install can be seen as daunting for the novice installer, but experienced suppliers do offer support to simplify the process.
Commissioning Onsite commissioning support should be an option offered by your supplier, who will send out one of their own field service engineers to commission and explain the system set up and functionality of the heat pump controls. You should also receive a handover pack to pass on to the system owner that includes everything required for MCS compliance as well as user guides. For a qualified heating engineer, installing an ASHP isn’t rocket science – you already have all of the skills to get started. However, choosing the right supplier will make a big difference, offering onsite support and the option to take on the compliance paperwork, freeing up your time to spend out on the job and not in the office. 50 RENEWABLE Technology
Communicating with the customer How many homeowners understand what types or renewable technologies are best suited to their property and are fully aware of the incentives available to them? Jed Smith, Head of Business Support Services at Specflue, discusses how best to work with the customer.
T
he general public are unaware of all the benefits of renewable technologies – it’s only the most proactive homeowners who are researching for themselves and identifying possible energy saving solutions. When the Government first announced the Green Deal and RHI schemes, a certain amount of money was allocated to help raise consumer awareness of renewable technologies. However, this soon changed and they decided that the installer would do the marketing and promoting of such schemes for them. Fundamentally, this is where the problem lies. As the scheme was delayed, less plumbing and heating engineers decided to venture into renewable technologies as they couldn’t see the return
the last 24 months to a stage where domestic renewable solutions are now being discussed and installations, particularly of biomass, have seen a significant upturn supported by the RHI.
Next phase
Jed Smith from Specflue
on investment of all the setup costs of training and various memberships. This led to very little movement on the MCS register for installers and that impacted on the number of people talking about renewable technologies and promoting their worth. Thankfully we have moved forward considerably over
To generate some longevity in the domestic renewables market, the next phase is to educate the customer further. The renewables customer often developed a perception that may have been influenced by the ‘aggressive renewables salesman’ approach, pushing the wrong products and design aligned to their sales objectives, rather than what is needed for the customer’s home. It is important that engineers and any sales representatives operate in a manner which is aligned to
industry standards to protect, not just the renewables customer, but the industry. This may mean learning new skills on handling customer expectations and managing the customer to a solution which suits both the home and the budget. These new skills may be a diversification from the installer’s traditional technical skills training as it would focus on customer service, communication skills and customer relationship management, all areas that are traditionally part of the sales, design and installation phases of any renewables project. Having a clear, well-defined process for renewable engineers for pre and post sales activity should be thought through and not just focus on the installation.
Ensuring the customer is educated as part of the presales activity should be a clear objective. The customer should be discouraged from taking a renewables product into their property if the solution is not a good fit and if there is no real return on investment or carbon savings.
Misselling You hear so many stories of cases where heat pumps have been installed in old properties with high heat losses and demands. I can’t help but think about how the results would have been different if the customer had received the correct advice and an alternative solution had been matched to the heat load and losses. Is this not the responsibility of the engineer and company who are responsible for the project?
MAKE YOUR FUTURE RENEWABLE
If the market is to have longevity and the customer is to fully benefit from renewable technologies, then we need to learn to manage the customer and the market better. As well as new skills, a new approach to renewable technologies should be considered to help facilitate ongoing improvement in the standards of advice and installation. MCS standards, CIBSE guides for best practice, and competent person schemes all contribute towards applying quality schemes to ensure the products and installations reach a certain standard. Maybe the industry needs to build on these and ensure more is done to guarantee that the customer’s experience is a positive one. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Renewable Technology 51 New gas absorption heat pump range Hybrid delivers the best of both worlds
The latest commercial heating technology from Lochinvar is the Optimus gas absorption heat pump (GAHP), capable of delivering space heating and hot water at high efficiencies. Optimus delivers outputs up to 41.7kW and is designed to operate with ambient temperatures as low as -20°C. It can achieve efficiencies as high as 152% by capturing low grade energy from surrounding air to supplement thermal output from the refrigeration cycle, driven either by a natural gas
or propane burner. Low temperature hot water can be supplied at up to 65°C for heating applications and
up to 70°C for DHW. Outdoor installation provides a convenient space saving
solution, but an indoor option is also available. The Optimus can be used in place of gas-fired boilers and also work in partnership with them, with integral controls giving priority to the Optimus unit so the boilers only fire up during periods of higher heating demand. Factory-assembled skid mounted packages are also available in packages from two to five units. These come pre-piped and pre-wired for ease of installation. PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

The aroTHERM hybrid system from Vaillant is said to combine the reassurance of a traditional boiler system with the cost saving credentials of an air to water heat pump. The hybrid system features a controller which adjusts to the homeowner’s individual energy tariff. It monitors, calculates and then automatically selects the most cost effective and efficient method of heating for the home – whether that’s through the boiler or renewable system – on a day-to-day basis, delivering savings as well as protecting customers from any sudden rise in fuel costs. “Hybrid installations can be specified to provide optimum efficiency and customer reassurance,” says John Bailey, Commercial & Renewables Systems Director. “While the vision of having multiple technologies
pumping energy into the house may be off-putting for some customers, homeowners can now rest assured that today’s hybrid installations are as simple as they are effective. “While renewables can deliver cost and energy efficient heating for many properties, sometimes a single technology isn’t enough to deliver the high level of efficiency expected, particularly in older or poorly insulated builds.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Why biomass is an ideal solution for rural areas Biomass may be one of the oldest forms of energy, but it is now increasingly being used to provide users with a reliable and costeffective heating solution. n the UK, when we think of biomass fuel, we generally think of wood pellets, which are currently the most widely used biomass fuel. However the definition of biomass is anything that is living, either animal or plant matter, or was living until very recently. All biomass gets its energy from the sun and biomass can be solid, liquid or a gas. The reason that biomass has become so popular is that it is a renewable fuel – we can always grow more plants or trees. This is in stark contrast to fossil fuels, which we know there is only so much of. The supply of fossil fuels is dependent on the cooperation of the countries where deposits are found, and intergovernmental relationships are sometimes tricky where oil or gas is concerned. Countries with substantial oil or gas deposits have a trump card which becomes ever more powerful as fossil fuel supplies dwindle.
Versatile energy It’s well-known that biomass can provide fuel for central heating, but did you know that it can also be used to generate electricity? According to recycling charity WRAP, there are now over 60 waste-to-energy power plants in the UK burning material as diverse as meat and bone meal, waste paper and processed sewage pellets! Electricity generation from biomass is not necessarily just something for the commercial sector. Domestic biomass MicroCHP (combined heat and power) boilers are coming. The versatility of biomass is striking. Corn and wheat can be used to create ethanol, a liquid, petrol-like fuel that
Tim Pollard, Plumb Center’s Head of Sustainability
can power vehicles. Biomass can also be turned into biogas, which can be used in the same way as natural gas.
Rural benefits I have often heard friends living in rural areas discussing the inconsistency of lead-times on oil deliveries in peak heating season. We all lead busy lives these days and if you forget or delay ordering your oil delivery, you could be in for a few cold days! One of the benefits of biomass is that because the fuel is readily available and comes from rural areas, supply is less likely to be a problem, and local businesses benefit from the custom, which supports the local economy. In rural areas, biomass boilers are certain to become a mainstay of central heating. They can be installed in place of a standard gas or oil boiler on an existing central heating system. So this means little interruption and inconvenience to the customer as well as a cost saving, as it prevents the need to install an entirely new heating system. Fuel efficiency means energy and cost savings to the customer. Modern biomass boilers work at over 90% efficiency, which
means that almost all the fuel is burned to generate constant heat and hot water. It is also possible to regulate the amount of fuel delivered to the burner, therefore making it able to match the heat demand required. Being more energy efficient means that homeowners can also save money on their fuel bills – and the savings can be significant. A wood-fuelled boiler could save customers more than 50% on fuel bills – this equates to around £650 a year compared to electric heating. One potential drawback is the need for fuel storage. The wood pellets have to be stored somewhere and a hopper system is required, which can take up quite a lot of space. Therefore biomass may not be a good solution for smaller homes.
Extra incentive A big bonus for biomass customers is that they can get paid for the energy they generate under the domestic RHI. The Government will currently pay 8.93p for every kWh generated by the boiler, with payments every quarter for the seven years after installation. Biomass boilers emit on average the same amount of carbon dioxide that is absorbed by the wood-fuel when it was in the form of a tree, so it is generally considered to be a carbon neutral appliance. In fact, biomass is the only carbon neutral fuel on the market. With its environmental and money saving credentials, biomass boilers have to be an option for many householders in off-grid areas and worth investigating for both the installer and customer. More advanced thermal store Designed for installations using renewable energy sources, the new Torrent Eco range of thermal stores from Gledhill features a highefficiency ErP-ready pump, flow sensor technology and increased store temperature capacity. The new range enables the user to combine energy sources such as solar thermal, biomass stoves or heat pumps along with conventional gas, oil and LPG. The store can be used to deliver heat to a property and hot water on demand via a plate heat exchanger.
The new pump is said to reduce power consumption significantly and the flow sensor saves energy by avoiding the need to keep the plate heat exchanger heated on a ‘warm cycle’. ith annual sales upwards of 1.6 million units, it’s not surprising that the UK domestic gas boiler market has long attracted the attention of a large number of European manufacturers. Some familiar names continue to fight over market share, but the market is big enough for companies to claim success with only a relatively small slice of the pie. Andrew Crown, ATAG’s UK ATAG Heating Technology Managing Director is a manufacturer that has had a presence in the UK for a number of years, but with the creation of a new domestic division and the decision to sell directly to installers, the Dutch company believes it can now give some of the bigger spending brands a run for their money. That’s not to say that ATAG is shy when it comes to investment. LIGHT COMMERCIAL Heating 55
Keep safe by going with the flow A continuous flow hot water system can meet high levels of demand and also help to minimise the risk of legionella in commercial environments, says Bob Chapman, Business Development Manager for Water Heaters at Bosch Commercial and Industrial Heating.
S
ince 1976, when Legionnaires’ disease was first discovered, research into the disease has revealed that stored hot water systems present an enhanced risk for the proliferation of legionella and a vast amount of detailed maintenance is required to keep a stored hot water system free from the infection. The level of work involved can be time consuming, expensive and Bob Chapman, Business must be adhered to on a Development Manager regular basis. The primary method used to control the risk from legionella in hot water systems is water temperature control. If hot water systems are maintained consistently above 60°C, there is likely to be minimal risk of legionella growth. However with older traditional storage systems where there is often a slow recovery, and with a high hot water demand, stratification may occur in the storage vessel and it is not always possible to guarantee that all the stored water is maintained above 60°C all the time. In larger storage systems it is also possible for debris to accumulate at the bottom of the storage vessel, which can then harbour legionella bacteria which are insulated from the high temperature water within the vessel and can pose a potential risk.
Continuous flow The risks and associated hygiene regime costs posed by stored hot water systems has seen an increase in the demand and use of continuous flow systems. A continuous flow hot water system is a process of delivering a varying flow of hot water at a constant temperature to meet the fluctuating demand, without the need for stored water, and minimising the risk of legionella. With a gas-fired continuous flow system, there is no storage vessel to cause potential problems, because as the cold water enters the heater a flow sensor ignites the modulating burner immediately. This then heats up the cold water as it passes through the heat exchanger to a set point of 60°C or above. With a cascaded modular system it is possible to achieve flow rates of up to 170 litres/min at a 50°C temperature rise to satisfy periods of high demand, but which can then modulate down to the minimum flow rate needed to maintain a secondary circulation system at 60°C. This process of heating the water delivers a constant flow of hot water at the required temperature, and because the ignition process is electronic, there is no need for a standing pilot light, and energy is only consumed to maintain the safe circulation temperature or when hot water is required. As there is no stored water within the appliance, the standing energy loss is practically zero, when compared with traditional hot water storage systems. This in itself is a huge benefit to commercial stakeholders, who are often faced with the challenge of managing heat losses and energy costs, as well as controlling legionella. In addition, where site conditions permit a point of use application, a continuous flow system will only ever utilise energy whenever hot water is needed, for example the use of commercial sinks or wash basins. Unlike alternative systems available on the market, a continuous flow system comprising gas-fired instantaneous water heaters is a particularly strong option in certain applications. Arguably one of the most appropriate types
55_V2.indd 1
of applications for a continuous flow system are those where large quantities of hot water are required to meet relatively short periods of demand. Taking a caravan or holiday park as an example, here we have an instance where there may be as many as 200 people all wishing to take a hot shower within the space of one to two hours. If a storage-based system is selected in this instance, there is usually a requirement for large amount of stored water to meet the peak demand, which would then be subject to high energy losses for the majority of the day when very little hot water is required. Using a continuous flow system instead means water can be heated on demand which creates significant energy savings potential.
Sports clubs It is not just sites with a vast number of people to cater for that could benefit from a continuous flow system. Applying the same principle, a community football, rugby, or even golf club could reap the rewards of a continuous flow system. In these instances, where high demand sports usage only tends to take place at weekends, a storage-based system can prove counter-productive and costly due to the losses incurred when the club is only being used for low-use social activities throughout the week. In showering applications, the water is blended down to a safe and comfortable temperature of around 40°C, which unfortunately is an ideal temperature for legionella to proliferate. As the water is atomised at the shower head, it is much easier for droplets to be inhaled by the user, so this particular use requires a strict hygiene regime and careful monitoring of the water temperatures to protect against legionella. Away from a leisure context, we see instances where commercial kitchens require continuous demand for high volumes of hot water. If the application requires continuous high demand, a storage-based system may struggle to recover the required temperatures. A well-sized continuous flow system, however, can generate the high volumes of hot water required up to temperatures of 84°C.
A continuous flow system can meet high levels of demand for hot water in a range of light commercial applications
Big benefits Although there may not be a ‘one solution fits all’ approach when it comes to specifying and installing a continuous flow system, there are huge potential benefits to be achieved through the implementation of a well-sized system. With the installation of a continuous flow system, stakeholders can improve their hot water performance significantly and reduce energy costs, whilst maintaining a strict hygiene regime and reducing the risks of legionella at the same time. www.bosch-industrial.co.uk

Good workout for MagnaClean filter Bannatyne Health Clubs have given Adey’s MagnaClean Commercial filter the thumbs up following a workout at one of its spa and fitness centres. Following a successful installation at the company’s flagship Fairfield Health Club at Stotford in Bedfordshire, the MagnaClean filter is now specified as part of Bannatyne’s future plant efficiency upgrades to ensure all its heating systems are effectively maintained and protected. “After installing two brand new boilers, we weren’t expecting the filter to collect anything, let alone after such a short period of time,” says Jason Hicking, Bannatyne’s Regional Estates Manager. “After seeing how much dirt and debris the filter collected in just a month, we can
now see exactly why new boilers shouldn’t be installed on a dirty system. To limit disruption, our engineers were only able to do a partial drain down of the system and flush the pipework in the boiler room. So Adey’s MC1+ chemical protector and filter work hand-in-hand to draw out and remove debris as it
passes through the system to provide ongoing protection. “Fairfield Health Club is a prestigious establishment, so it’s extremely important to us that we provide the best facilities for our members, and that they remain at the highest standards. “The heating system serves our spa treatment and
swimming-based facilities, so any downtime or failure would be unacceptable. The results speak for themselves and this is why we’ve chosen Adey to ensure all our heating systems are well protected for the future.” Rob Hill, Adey’s Commercial Business Development Manager, adds: “We’re proud to be working in partnership with Bannatyne’s. Fairfield Health Club is the jewel in the crown of the estate and as such, its members expect the best, so the club’s heating system is no exception. Our MagnaClean filters and premium chemicals provide best practice system protection and we’re delighted to help ensure a clean bill of health for such a high profile spa and gym brand.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Tapping into a new market Easy and reliable hot water provision is vital for many commercial environments, but traditional solutions have a number of drawbacks when it comes to safety, speed and efficiency. Jon Cockburn, Head of Marketing at Heatrae Sadia, explains why being hot on the latest light commercial kitchen products can benefit the installer.
A
lthough workplace catering facilities will vary in size and type, with offices, factories and medical centres generally having relatively small kitchens, and restaurants, schools and hospitals having large commercial kitchens, they will all require boiling drinking water. Traditionally, boiling water has been delivered via kettles or urns – but these solutions do not always offer safety, speed or efficiency. Kettles Heatrae Sadia’s Jon Cockburn and urns full of boiling water can be knocked over, and trailing cables can be damaged. Kettle users can also be scalded by water spilling from the appliance, or by steam. It is also time-consuming to continually fill a kettle or urn and wait for it to boil – which can be frustrating. In busy working environments people don’t want to spend their break times waiting for a hot drink. There is also energy efficiency to consider. If an urn is filled and boiled, but not all of the boiling water is used, the excess hot water will lose heat through the insufficiently insulated tank, translating into massive energy wastage.
Plumbed in In light of the drawbacks presented by kettles and urns, in recent years we’ve seen increased demand for plumbed-in boiling water units. More and more businesses and public sector organisations are choosing them – and since these products need to be professionally installed, this is good news for installers working in the light commercial field. The business and public sector premises that commercial heating installers work in on a day-to-day basis will usually have some type of onsite catering facilities. Installers
Installing the Aquatap instant boiling/chilled water tap
therefore already have an existing customer base and can expand their business by offering boiling water units as well as the installation, maintenance and servicing of commercial heating products. Permanently connected to the cold water mains, electric boiling water units provide a constant supply of hot water, which can be used for multiple purposes, from making hot drinks to cooking vegetables. With varying capacities being available, they are suitable for any environment, from small office rest rooms and school staff rooms to larger restaurant kitchens and workplace canteens. Traditional boiling water products were quite industrial in appearance and operation, but the introduction of the boiling water tap – widely regarded as a stylish kitchen accessory – has opened up the market even further, leading to good growth potential. Our easy-to-install, 5 litre capacity Aquatap, for example, is based on our market leading Supreme boiling water product, and includes similar builtin safety features and the same Intelliboil Plus technology, but has a more stylish hot tap design. In workplace kitchens, hot taps are ideal for quickly
Solution for district heating systems Available from Pegler Yorkshire is the Meibes range of Heat Interface Units (HIUs), designed to meet the need of UK typical systems and applications. The HIU is said to offer many benefits over decentralised systems such as improved energy efficiency, improvement to SAP ratings, no gas installation throughout the building, ease of access to heating plant for maintenance and a simple integrated solution of low carbon and renewable heat sources, making it easier for planning consent. While acknowledging that there will continue to be a need for bespoke units to suit the individual projects, Pegler Yorkshire says it has developed specific
56.indd 1
solutions for more repetitive applications. The Meibes units benefit from a patented Proportional Modulating valve that intelligently prioritises the requirement for domestic hot water over heating, in a way similar to a combi boiler. They operate
on a ‘no demand, no flow’ basis which minimises the demand on the main network, reduces energy consumption and ensures the apartment is not overheated. Sindar Singh, Climate Control Market Manager, says: “The traditional method primarily chosen for meeting the needs of a multi-occupancy or district heating system has been through decentralised systems with individual gas-fired boilers, but while this system is effective, it can be prone to so many problems and inefficiencies. The development of the Heat Interface Unit has revolutionised the approach to delivering heat and hot water and while not a new concept, the latest products
offer a range of features that leave many older systems looking obsolete.” A recent study by BSRIA has reported the use of HIUs to increase by 17% annually, driven by the need for more urban regeneration, compliance to SAP Ratings and Building Regulations. “Meibes HIUs deliver benefits for all parties in the supply chain from initial system design through to everyday operation and maintenance,” adds Sindar. “There are lower capital costs and they also don’t require complicated heating and pipework system designs. There is no hot water storage necessary and it’s generally easier to gain planning consent.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

making hot drinks like tea and coffee, and for preparing instant snacks and soups. This is particularly beneficial for busy working environments where employees don’t have time to wait for a kettle to boil – for example in hospitals, call centres and fire stations. In larger commercial catering environments, such as restaurant kitchens, canteens, bars and cafés, having boiling water literally on tap can save chefs huge amounts of time when cooking vegetables or preparing stock, sauces, rice, pasta or couscous, and making hot drinks for customers also becomes quicker and easier.
Safety first Boiling water units are also safer than kettles and urns; securely mounted onto a wall or counter top, they can’t be knocked over and any steam produced in the boiling cycle is condensed and retained within the unit. Importantly, boiling water units are also energy efficient, delivering the amount of water required on demand and replacing it as it is used. Our Intelliboil Plus technology effectively and efficiently manages the boiling cycle by regularly bringing the contents of the water container to the boil in response to ongoing user demand. A ‘temperature ready’ LED indicator advises when Aquatap is ready for use. Based on an environment of 15 people requiring four hot drinks a day, we estimate that the daily running costs of Aquatap is £6.96 lower than a kettle, which translates to a saving of £1670 per year. For a commercial kitchen, the savings could therefore be much higher.
Cold comfort The other benefit of hot taps is that there is usually the option to have cold drinking water delivered from the same unit. Over recent years there’s been increased emphasis on drinking an adequate amount of water to remain sufficiently hydrated, with dehydration contributing to headaches, tiredness and irritability, as well as serious health problems. Studies have also suggested that water increases the blood’s ability to carry oxygen to the brain, improving concentration and mental performance. Some workplaces opt for bottled water coolers, but this can be expensive and involves a lot of maintenance in terms of replacing and storing the relatively large, heavy bottles. In addition, bottled water in general has come under scrutiny in recent years in terms of its environmental impact and whether plastic water bottles actually harbour potentially harmful bacteria. UK drinking water is the most stringently tested in the world. However, tap water can be poor tasting and warm – which can discourage people from drinking it. So a good solution is to chill and filter mains water via a plumbed-in unit. Aquatap is designed to deliver refreshing chilled or ambient water in addition to boiling water, with boiling only, boiling/chilled and boiling/ambient versions available. Increasing numbers of businesses are beginning to appreciate the benefits that instant boiling and chilled water products provide, whether they have a small kitchen or large catering facilities. Proactive installers looking to broaden their offering could benefit from learning more about these products and their installation requirements. www.heatraesadia.com

Guide to selecting the right burner When it comes to selecting a replacement commercial heating system, there are a number of factors that will determine its efficiency and efficacy. Martin Cooke, Technical Manager at EOGB Energy Products Ltd, discusses the critical considerations to bear in mind.
T
he commercial heating industry has changed a great deal in recent years. Emerging trends are to replace cast iron sectional boilers with gas-fired cascade multi boiler systems or to add a biomass installation with a smaller gas boiler back-up. At a glance, these new options look good. However, some questions hang over these new trends regarding increased maintenance schedules, extra space Martin Cooke, Technical requirements for biomass Manager at EOGB storage, efficiency claims for renewable installations, and the overall comparable life of the new plant compared to traditional options. Historically, older commercial heating systems were oversized, often to accommodate possible future expansion. The operating temperature is usually set to 80ºC and, with the over-sizing of plant, this can lead to inefficient operation due to lack of heat load once up to temperature, resulting in short burner cycles and increased wear on burner components. Additionally, it often doesn’t make efficient use of modulating controls where specified. A well designed and correctly sized plant with multiple sectional boilers and correctly matched burners can provide excellent reliability, with efficient heating and hot water supplies, and shouldn’t be overlooked in view of new trends and possible government ‘green’ incentives. Unfortunately, during the economic downturn, many projects were price driven and, in order to win tenders, the emphasis was on cheaper equipment over equipment that would benefit the user and save energy in the long term.
Meeting standards According to BS EN 15232:2012 ‘Energy performance of buildings automation, controls and building management’, there is a minimum recommended efficiency standard of band C. For example, on natural gas this equates to a single boiler system less than 2MW having a gross seasonal efficiency of 91%; each individual boiler in a multiple boiler system having an efficiency of 82%; and an overall multiboiler system efficiency of 86%.
When a boiler is specified many choices of heat generator (i.e. burners) are available, and with careful consideration at this stage, a huge impact on plant running costs and overall environmental impact can be achieved. When selecting a burner, it is critical to consider whether fully modulating or two stage operation is best; whether it should be premix or blown gas; its turndown ratio; the use of inverter driven fan motors; if it has a low NOx combustion head (class 3 as per EN 676); and if it has advanced combustion control, such as O2 and CO trim.
When a burner is matched to a boiler it is extremely important to ensure that the burner’s working field (i.e. the range in which the burner’s fan can overcome the back pressure of the appliance it’s fitted to) is looked at very closely. The information that is needed to make a perfect boiler/ burner match includes: • The ‘over pressure’ of the boiler or appliance – the internal resistance of the combustion chamber that the burner’s fan must overcome. • The boiler’s maximum heat input – the amount of heat Combustion control required, usually in kW, to produce the required output. Energy saving can be significant when combustion control is Losses will always happen during the combustion process, added. We believe building boilers requires a personal touch. Which is why we sent our robots packing.
Every Vaillant Commercial boiler is hand built by a single expert. No robots. No exception. While we constantly embrace cutting-edge production processes, we have always been careful to maintain a human touch. This is why each boiler is hand built by a single expert, giving them 100% ownership. Only during the packing stages do we let our robots get involved. A fact we are extremely proud of.

Energy recovery unit for schools Extending its range of ventilation options, Fläkt Woods has launched the eCO Premium, a new energy recovery unit (ERU) that is said to represent the latest in air movement and controls technology. The unit is designed to assist schools in meeting more stringent government guidelines and is capable of recovering 85% of the thermal energy. eCO Premium is also claimed to offer an unprecedented level of control – when specified with sensors, it automatically adjusts to changing demands within a room.
A presence detector will switch the system on when the room is occupied and subsequently off again when it’s empty. An internal CO2 sensor will even adjust the air supply proportionally to the number of people in the room.
The unit extracts moist, stale air from inside and replaces it with fresh air from outside, using the heat from the outgoing air to warm the incoming air. This means there is a constant flow of fresh air being circulated within a building, improving
indoor air quality, sustaining comfortable levels of warmth and reducing the levels of CO2 present. It is available in different air flow capacities to suit a range of applications. David Black at Fläkt Woods says: “eCO Premium offers great energy saving potential for the education sector, and a lucrative opportunity for installers. By using waste heat from the outgoing air, energy bills can be greatly reduced and can achieve substantial carbon reductions, especially for premises with multiple buildings.” PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Free movement Easy handling and more freedom of movement are the key features of Hansgrohe’s new kitchen mixers – Metris Select and Talis Select. Combining a pull-out spray head with new Select technology, the mixer taps increases the operating range around the sink by up to 50cm. As with single lever mixers, temperature and water volume are set by turning the lever handle, ergonomically shaped for comfortable use. The water flow is then switched on or off by pressing the Select button on the top of the pull-out spray head. The newly developed Select shut-off valve, which turns water on and off, works on a purely mechanical basis and no electrical power is required. www.hansgrohe.co.uk

With the Energyrelated Products (ErP) Directive set to come into force in September, Vaillant has announced a number of enhancements to its ecoTEC range to ensure that the boilers meet requirements. The new boilers will also be Vaillant’s most powerful models yet. Available from the beginning of July, the all new ecoTEC Plus combination and system boilers and the ecoTEC Pro combination models boast high-efficient pumps and are certified with an ‘A’ ELD rating. A new version of the ecoTEC Plus open vent boiler will also be launched to the market in August. The enhanced range will directly replace the current ecoTEC Plus and Pro appliances and offers ‘A’ ratings across heat outputs, domestic hot water efficiency, as well as reduced dimensions on the range of ecoTEC open vent boilers. The enhancements have been designed to further improve efficiency levels without compromising on power. Users will also benefit from increased flow rate on the combi boiler models, making them ideal for installations which require
a more advanced boiler with greater outputs. The ecoTEC Plus combi boiler will now be available with a 35kW output and a 30kW model will be incorporated into the ecoTEC Pro portfolio. New additions to the ecoTEC Plus open vent boilers will include 12kW and 24kW models. The new boilers are fully modulating for maintaining higher efficiencies at lower outputs. In addition, they are fully compatible with the existing range of Vaillant accessories including flues, variable termination kits, cylinders, controls and renewables. The combi boilers are also compatible with passive flue gas heat recovery devices (PFGHRD). PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No.

Flushing bypass manifold Valves Instruments Plus (VIP) has released a 3 valve f lushing bypass manifold with 40mm centre, a more compact version of the larger 80mm centre version. Designed for installation on HVAC terminal units such as fan coils and heat exchangers, the device allows for simplified terminal maintenance as it can be dismantled without having to empty the entire system. The 40mm unit features O-ring sealed union ends, both live side and unit ends, consequently allowing different configurations to be easily achieved. This is said to allow for easier routine cleaning of the terminal unit independently from the line’s regular working conditions. By closing the flow and return valves and by opening the bypass, the terminal unit is essentially isolated from the system. It
63.indd 1
is possible to drain and disconnect it for maintenance. By closing the bypass and the return valve, VIP says that it is possible to perform a ‘forward flushing’ of the strainer. By closing the bypass and flow valve (and with clean fluid in the system) it is also possible to perform a ‘back flushing’ of the system by forcing the flow of the fluid back into the terminal unit before it is drained through the strainer. The company says that the key features of the valve include the simplicity of maintenance, a reduced risk of leaking and the cost savings associated with a reduction in site labour. www.vip-ltd.co.uk PHAM NEWS ENQUIRY No. 173

Technical Tips HEAT TRANSFER FLUIDS The importance of heat transfer fluids within heating systems is often overlooked. Dr Philip Gray, Technical Manager for Kilfrost’s Speciality Fluids Division, discusses the impact that heat transfer fluids can have on efficiency and performance. Due to issues such as corrosion, bacteria and scaling, heat transfer fluids can have a significant impact on the life span and reliability of heating systems. Glycol itself is not particularly corrosive in concentrate form but it must be mixed with water to achieve the necessary protection from frost. As a result, corrosion can become a major problem for the system installer and end user. In addition, at certain glycol and water dilutions and under specific operating conditions, bacteria utilises glycol as a food source, leading to extensive problems with biological fouling. Problems associated with corrosion can lead to a heat transfer fluid becoming the most expensive part of a heating or cooling system, despite its relatively low initial cost to the customer. Having a clean and efficient system can reduce energy waste, extend the life of capital equipment and maximise a customer’s upfront investment. Ultimately this will save money, hassle and the potential loss of reputation resulting from any downtime due to system failures.
Industry standards An international standard created by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), known as the ASTM D1384-05 corrosion test standard, is playing an increasingly important role in addressing the problem. The test is used to assess the impact of heat transfer fluids on systems. Under laboratory conditions, pieces of metal that are typically used in HVAC systems, such as aluminium, iron, steel, brass, solder and copper, are weighed before being immersed in an inhibited glycol and water mixture at 88°C. At the end of the two week test, the metal is weighed again and analysed for signs of corrosion. In order to minimise risks it is essential that the heat transfer fluid used is effectively inhibited. Any fluid can claim to contain effective corrosion inhibitors but without the presence of a test standard, the extent of protection is difficult to gauge. The ASTM test standard is important but has not been embraced by everyone in the industry and currently remains voluntary. Greater adoption of the standard among heat transfer fluid manufacturers will give system installers and end users greater peace of mind.
In addition to selecting a quality glycol based heat transfer fluid, best practice with respect to installation is also critical. Installing a well inhibited glycol-based heat transfer fluid into a contaminated system is self-defeating. Systems should be cleaned and sanitised prior to installation of the heat transfer fluid to remove existing scale, sludge and biological contamination. To maximise the chances of long term service and high system efficiency, on-site fluid testing is also strongly encouraged.
Carbon footprint Companies are increasingly looking to reduce their carbon footprint and therefore the impact that systems and their heat transfer fluids have on the environment needs to be considered. When assessing the environmental performance of fluids, the full life cycle of the product must be considered, including how it is manufactured. It is possible to develop more efficient heat transfer fluids using corn-derived inhibited glycol, which is sustainably sourced and is biodegradable with low toxicity levels. For example, our Thermatrans Sustain TTS, a bio-derived Susterra based concentrate fluid, provides an alternative to monopropylene glycol based fluids. Although structurally very similar to the standard monopropylene glycol, bio-derived Susterra has a significantly superior low temperature viscosity. The circulating viscosity of a heat transfer fluid will have a significant impact on operational efficiency. For example, in ground source heating applications the use of a less viscous heat transfer fluid will help to ensure that efficient fluid flow can be achieved without unacceptable pressure drops developing within the system. This can save energy for the customer and reduce the strain on the pumps in operation. Laboratory studies have also shown bioderived Susterra to be up to three times more resistant to oxidative degradation at elevated temperatures compared to standard petroleum derived glycol and can offer longer lasting heat transfer and system protection compared to standard glycol-based products. The use of a corn sugar-derived glycol also sees a significant reduction in carbon footprint, consuming considerably less energy during the production of the base fluid.

Abode Modo, an eight piece range of eco-friendly bathroom mixer taps for basins and baths. Cascading flows of water are the inspiration behind the Modo range and the spouts have been designed to be non-splash to ensure that water cascades evenly into the basin or bath. Modo taps have in-built flow limiters that limit water output – four litres per minute for the basin monoblocs, five for the wall-mounted basin mixer and nine for the bath shower mixer.
