LIGHTBOX STUDIO

photographer’s studio on the picturesque Tōjinbō balsaltic cliffs that stretches across the coast of Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, JP captures the essence of the surroundings with its light, airy presence. An original study to capture the rotating dynamics of a handshake, the duality cube incorporates a form with interlocking gestures, while playing on heavy and light juxtaposing materiality. The final form requires shifting and turning on an axis to dismantle. Keeping with this concept, Lightbox Studio plays with the idea of a lightbox in photography with a large wood-frame space enclosed in a fabric membrane made from the durable, tensile cloth. The lighness of the fabric and wood appears to float on the cliff, while the ridgid, heavy structure of concrete and balsalt marble, whose textures peak through the cloth similarly to light shining on water’s surface, tie it to the nature of the site.

ELEGANT EXHIBITS The main gallery of the Lighbox is built to be experienced. The thin sheets of marble and the tensile structure enables light to travel through when solid wooden beams and columns create a shadowplay that dances through the space throughout time. Hung gallery pieces have the unique quality of being lit from within, similar to the nature of a lightbox, due to the exposure from the cloth membrane. Alternatively, gallery images can be projected onto the cloth membrane to bring the space to life.
