ALOR SETAR WATER RECREATION CENTER Program Bsc. Arch (Part I) Project Level Year 3 Semester 1 [2011/2012] Project Period 14 weeks Project Type Individual

The project aims to create a public community building where the local residents and tourists alike could go to experience water recreation activities on the Kedah River, the main river in the state Kedah. The site houses an existing observation tower which is used by the state ruler annually during the annual dragon boat race. The project asks that the design incorporates the tower as part of the whole development.

LOCATION PLAN

SCALE NTS

The site, Tanjung Chali, is the point of confluence between the two main rivers of Kedah; Sungai Kedah and Sungai Anak Bukit. Being located in the midst of the urban town of Alor Setar, Tanjung Chali is the center point of attraction, merging two riverfront into a central plaza overlooking towards the West. This has made Tanjung Chali the perfect site to accommodate a public building that could help expand the town's potential and popularity both locally and internationally.

INTEGRATION OF ELEMENTS... As a public community building, the Water Recreation Center will be a focal point of the town Alor Setar, attracting people from all walks of life into a single point in the city. Reflecting this statement will help the building to be as seamless as possible to its surrounding, providing a unique experience to the visitors. To achieve this, the building was design to be an integration of several factors that exists on the site and will affect the design in overall.

The building replicates the basic shape of the site to get optimum and relevant form in order to integrate with the site.

Internal courtyard was created to provide natural daylighting and ventilation as well as green spaces to integrate with nature.

In order to integrate with the existing tower, an axis was provided to further highlight the importance of the tower to the site.

The building was cut and separated to provide a more clean and linear circulation to integrate with the pedestrians.

The development of the area on both sides of the site created a potential merging point of both areas. 5

The converging point of the two rivers also creates unique opportunity for the site to be utilized.

A secondary screen facade was introduce to properly define spaces that are integrated with the outdoor.

Housing projects is always something designed to suit the human needs while providing aesthetics and functional purposes. Designing an affordable housing scheme adds another layer to the overall process. Stripping down the elements to only the basic needs while still maintaining the function aspect of the house is a challenge for the project. The success of this project depends on the combination of both sensibility and humility.

This particular project poses a challenge of merging new architecture with an old existing building on-site. The building, Odeon Cinema, is a heritage building. Therefore, its conservation is essential to the whole development. The tower is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, creating a potential for an iconic building withing the cityscape. Hence, not only is the blend of old and new architecture is important but it will also create an icon of Kuala Lumpur.

CONNECTION THROUGH PUBLIC SPACES... The strategic location of the site proves to be a prime advantage in creating an iconic landmark that provides a good public space in connecting the corporate and exclusive to the general public. The connection through the public space also creates a fluid integration between the elements existing on the site. It will also provide the public with the alternative of hanging out in a different area instead of the public square in front of SOGO which is always packed with people. It also compliments the whole site as the strategic location proves to be an advantage.

The site location provides an interesting flow of vehicular and pedestrian circulation. This creates a dynamic site movement and axis.

The block is shaped into a simple rectangular block as a starting point.

27

The tower block is raised to acquire four faces facing the four main axes on the site.

The block is divided into three zone where the middle zone is to highlight the core.

The block is split in two to create a stronger main axis that allows for penetration between the blocks.

The middle zone is raised to differentiate it from the other two zones.

The blocks is pushed back on the front to create a large open public space which highlights the axis and creates an entrance.

The middle zone is angled to create a dynamic form.

Both the blocks are rotated to create a tunnel effect on the axis which will accentuate the axis and create a dynamic form.

The side zones is angled conversely to compliment the middle zone.

Two link bridges area created between the blocks to create a special space which will highlight the importance of the axis.

The first three levels of the front side is cleared to create a void for the entrance.

WELD QUAY SENTRAL TRANSPORTATION HUB Program BArch (Part II) Project Level Year 2 [2012/2013] Project Period 28 weeks Project Type Design Thesis

This project was conceived witht the intention of improving the current state of public transportation in the island state of Penang. The hub will combine and integrate three main transportation system; the historic ferry system, the current statewide bus system and the returning heritage friendly tram system. By replacing the current jetty, the new transportation hub will be the new focal point of the transportation network that runs throughout Penang Island.

34

THESIS BACKGROUND... In order to ease the traffic of Penang through the introduction of the transportation hub, the current traffic situation was analyzed to integrate the best public transportation system available as well as to reintroduce an old forgotten transportation system which could well help to further optimize the whole system.

TRAFFIC

FERRY STUDIES

FERRY SERVICE

BUS STUDIES

The Penang Ferry services is not making any notable profits lately despite its daily travel which brings in a lot of passengers between the island and the mainland. This could be due to the escessive maintenance cost which could not be covered with fares alone. To completely discontinue and forget the ferry services will be a waste on the major potential it could bring as the main mode of transport to enter the island as well as a tourist attraction.

GATEWAY A Tourist gateway (sometimes called a Tourism Gateway or Gateway City) is a place or settlement through which tourists typically first visit on their way to a tourist attraction or Tourism region. As such, tourist gateways are often associated with a major international airport or domestic airport, major road or railway station.

35

TRAM STUDIES

WELD QUAY, GEORGETOWN... The main reason why Weld Quay was selected as the site for the proposed transportation hub is because of the existing Ferry Jetty and Bus Terminal that are located right next to each other but with no physical or even spatial connection between them. These two transportation terminals are one of the most used and busy transportation terminals in the island but they lack in any grandeur or even functional design. The location of both of these terminals has created a potential for integration between them as well as an introduction of a new tram station due to its close proximity to Georgetown and the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The existing taxi stop which attracted a lot of taxis has also added the potential of a possible transportation hub which could integrate several mode of transportation.

36

VISUAL GATEWAY... The main concept of the proposed transportation hub is to transform the old jetty into a new grand entrance to Penang while integrating the several transportation systems into a single efficient functioning hub. Therefore, the main idea in interpreting the design intention is to create the transportation hub as a visual gateway. By turning the terminal into a "gateway" as a node for the city, it will enhance the value of the ferry as a tourist attraction. The gateway will also be able to integrate all the transportation system into a single fluid hub.

By designing the transportation hub as a visual gateway, it will create a memorable space for the visitors to experience will both arriving and departing the island. It will also act as anode for the city where people will gather before travelling into or out of the city. This will require for the hub to be equipped with abundant of open public space, further enhancing not only the hub as a building but also each transportation system as a viable option for travelling. 37

PHYSICAL GATE

INTEGRATION

CIRCULATION NETWORK

The current jetty only act as a checkpoint for the visitors before dispersing into the city.

The terminal will be the point of convergence for both people coming in and going out.

The density of people movement should be denser on the lower floor as compared to the upper floor.

The new terminal will act as a node for the visitors to experience before dispersing into the city.

Splitting the terminal will manage the human traffic more efficiently.

This means that the movement on the upper floor should be smoother than the lower floor.

By splitting the terminal, it will create a physical gate for the visitors to pass through as a gateway experience.

Each block will then be integrated into a different unique transportation system.

By turning the top floor as a private floor and the middle floor as a transit floor, this will smooth the movement flow on the lower floor.

By topping it with a curve roof will enhance both visually and physically of the terminal as a gateway into Penang.

The additional block will then be placed on the lower level to ease accessibility.

This will result in a smaller top floor and a larger middle floor to accommodate movement.

Design Development Phase - To prepare the working drawing up to standard for authority submission. - To liaise and submit for authority BP approval. The whole development consists of multiple building parts mainly that made up the resort. The resort is design to be a top class resort in Pangkor Island that could provide the guest with privacy, intimacy and comfort at the most optimal level. With complete facilities to cater the guests, the resort is designed as the ultimate tropical getaway for both the locals and tourists. 48

PARADISE GETAWAY... The whole idea of this proposal is to create a resort that could provide the ultimate comfort and intimacy for the guests. Therefore, to provide privacy is the main intention of the design while still maintaining the intimacy and openness of the spaces to ensure comfort and a suitable ambience of the whole development. Segregation of the spaces and buildings are integral in ensuring the smoothness of transitions as well as the overall interaction between guests, staffs and the environment.

The main access to the site is set as the starting point to segregate the site into three main area which are defined as public, semi-private and private.

The building components are arranged based on the zoning and each building is placed strategically to allow for each building to be easily accessible and are able to get the ocean view.

Since the site is gradually sloping up against the ocean, each buildng components are spaced accordingly so that they don't block the view of the building behind them. This allow each guest to be able to enjoy the full experience of the resort.

OPEN INTIMACY...

The main building started with the basic concept of entrance towards an open view which in this case is the ocean.

49

The spaces are divided into three blocks with optimal views and the connecting bridge is treated as an open space to allow ventilation.

One of the block is elongated on both sides to allow for connection with another component as well as creating an access path towards the beach for the convenience of the guests.

The elongated block is split into two to create more openness of spaces. For each connecting space, water features are inserted to create a more unique experience while crossing between these spaces.

Design Development Phase - To liaise and submit for authority BP approval. The proposed site sits on the lakeside of the famous lake gardens of Taiping. Containing twelve heritage columns that need to be preserve, the hotel design incorporates classical colonial architecture elements weaved with contemporary spaces to blend with the surrounding buildings and environment. The whole aura of the design is intended to bring back nostalgic memories of the place which is rich in cultural history. 54

HERITAGE REVISIT... Taiping is a town full of cultural and historical significance. To truly reflect and represent the characteristics of Taiping, the hotel is design with the influence of colonial architecture that dominates the town of Taiping. By incorporating the visual and physical traits of colonial architecture, the hotel will immensely blend with the surrounding to create a more natural setting to the whole environment. The spatial arrangement of each individual space are also strategically arrange to further enhance the nostalgic aura of the whole development through open walkways, staggered spaces and arched corridors.

From a single point of access, the building massing is placed on the larger part of the site to optimize the area while utilizing the positive views of the site which overlooks the lake garden.

Each block is separated to create a walkway connection that enhances the nostalgic intentions. The entrance block is extended further to create a focal point near the entrance.

55

The building massing is the angled perpendicularly to bring in the colonial feel. A courtyard is created to provide an inner view for the blocks that faces negative external view.

Each blocks is staggered differently to give each block the positive view of the lake garden. This will provide more guest rooms the chance to experience the site as it is.

The whole idea approach for the facade is to incorporate bottom-heavy and top-light characteristics into the design. This is to replicate the colonial architecture that is widely found in Taiping.

Not only seen in the columns, the walls are also design to be heavier at the bottom with the use of solid materials for the arches and more elements present at the bottom compared to the more cleaner top wall.

PERAK AGRICULTURE CENTER 59

Office / Employer S&A Architects Sdn Bhd Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Client Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP) Project Stage Design Proposal Project Involvement Schematic Design Phase - Come up with the proposal from sketches, concept up to schematics. The whole proposal for the Perak Agriculture Center revolves around the idea of highlighting nature by incorporating several strategies such as blending the building with the surrounding environment, uses of natural material, implementation of various foliage around the building, as well as representing the building with natural imageries. The whole idea of the building is to bring people closer to idea of nature via space planning and the use of landscape design to highlight the importance of nature and agriculture to the world. 60

BLENDING NATURE THROUGH SPACES... Using nature as inspiration, the building uses the idea of a tree, originating from a single trunk and branching out to several branches, the building uses that idea to obtain its main form. The utilization of nature as inspiration allows for each individual spaces to be personally designed to be interacting with each other and its surrounding. The building is designed to blend with its surrounding so that each space seamlessly transitions into the external environment. This ensures the users to experience the building as it intended, through nature.

61

From the basic idea of tree where a single trunk could then branch out into multiple branches, the building uses this idea as its main form. Using this idea strengthen the notion of using nature as inspiration.

The idea was then made into form as a building with one main entrance which is then branched out into multiple blocks with each branches to have its own view.

The main block is then extruded to act as the main block as well as the building core. This will clearly indicate the main entrance of the building to properly define each spaces.

The remaining branching blocks is then varied and alternated throughout several floors to give it a more random feel. This will create a more unique form throughout.

The open void left out through alternating blocks is converted into a green space. This not only brought out the nature idea but also promotes natural ventilation throughout the building.

The use natural materials such as raw concrete, timber and creepers will help to create a more "natural" building which blends with the surrounding environment.

Office / Employer S&A Architects Sdn Bhd Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Client Perbadanan Kemajuan Negeri Perak (PKNP) Project Stage Under Construction Project Involvement Schematic Design Phase - Come up with the proposal from sketches, concept up to schematics. The Teluk Intan Resthouse was designed to be a colonial style building which is intended to introduce nostalgia along with contemporary space making. The design of the building, with its simple space planning, articulated facade, bland colour pallette, is all to ensure the original colonial style that is famous around Perak, is showcased to its optimum. The resthouse is aimed to attract both local and foreign tourists with its nostalgic visual and interactive luxurious spaces that could capture attention and provide comfort to the users. 66

INTIMATE SPACES THROUGH INTERACTION... Not limiting to the idea of using British Colonial architecture as a way to brought nostalgia as well as creating an interesting visual, the spaces designed is also to be interacting with one another especially through its central courtyard that acts as a focal point for the whole resthouse. The clear line dividing the public and private spaces also makes the spaces more unique especially for the guests who can experience both spaces. The interacting spaces also make the whole resthouse feels more intimate and comfortable, just as a resthouse should be.

The initial massing is obtain using the site shape after considering the setbacks required based on the by-laws. The form determined the main entrance to the building as well as the optimum views.

The configuration also allows for the block to be easily divided between public and private spaces which is according to their close proximity to the entry point.

67

The massing is then split to create an internal courtyard as a central focal point while creating an internal view for the guests as opposed to the external views.

The vertical massing is then added and varied to allow for one wing to be higher than the other to allow it to have optimal view across the opposing wing.

The external facade which defines the building uses the top-light, bottom-heavy configuration to create the architectural visual which are dominantly found during the British Colonial era.

HOTEL SRI PETALING 71

Office / Employer S&A Architects Sdn Bhd Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Client PNB Commercial Project Stage Authority Submission Project Involvement Schematic Design Phase - Come up with the proposal from sketches, concept up to schematics. The original Hotel Sri Petaling was completed in the early 90's as part of the new town Sri Petaling. The building, which was intended to be a shophouse has caused restrictions to the hotel design which resulted in a simple and straightforward design. With the current heavy guest traffic of the hotel, the hotel requires an upgrade to further improve its standing and quality to better serve the guests. Therefore, the proposal will seek to give the hotel a unique and iconic look which will attract the attention it needed as a top-class hotel. 72

FIRST-CLASS SERVICE, TOP-CLASS LOOK... To give the hotel an iconic look, the hotel needs to utilize on its grid-like room configuration which allows for an opportunity to create a modular facade that could represent both public and private spaces. The hotel is simplified not only on its facade but also on its spaces to maximize the minimal space available on its tight site. To increase its rating, the hotel needs to introduce several facilities such as swimming pool, spa and gym which could provide a challenge to the limited site but could provide a unique opportunity for something special along the way.

The existing hotel is separated into three separate blocks with a staggering form that some seems displaced from other building. Although its somewhat unique, the visual looks dated and needs to be revamp.

The additional required facilities is then added on top of one end of the hotel block. The rooftop configuration allows for the facilities to be more exclusive with its location and rooftop views. The pool, flanked by two pocket gardens will be the main attraction of the area.

A rooftop garden is then added to the other side of the block to balance out the activities of the guests. The rooftop, which is covered with a glass roof, will provide the guests with privacy and comfortability as a private garden.

73

The blocks are connected on the several lower floors and the form is streamlined and simplified to a base form to maximise the building plinth in its limited site area.

The basic idea for the facade is to utilize the gridlike configuration of the room. This is visualize in the facade with window boxes to represent each rooms. This allows for optimal view for the guests while maintaining that exclusive look.

To create variety to the facade, the first several floor is treated differently to represent the difference between public and private spaces. The idea is still to portray the inner spaces through transparency albeit with a different approach such as bigger windows, using wire mesh or even open spaces.

With several outdoor spaces that are accessible through different gathering spaces in the residence, the seamless connection between external and internal spaces is never more apparent. This allows for easier crowd management during any family gathering or open house event. 78

Office / Employer S&A Architects Sdn Bhd Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Client I&P Group Project Stage Completed Project Involvement Schematic Design Phase - Come up with the proposal from sketches, concept up to schematics. This particular project concerns the retreatment of the existing building facade into a more contemporary design. The existing building's facade is in a bad condition and needs to be revamped to represent I&P as a top-class developer. Without destroying or disturbing the existing facade, the proposed new facade relies on creating a second skin to the existing facade through introducing glass panel, vertical louvres and aluminium cladding. These new elements follow the existing configuration only adding to it. A canopy is also added to provide shade for parking. 80

This project, which is a renovation for an already existing house, aims to utilize all the negative spaces from the existing plan and convert it into a livable and usable living space. The design also asks for the inclusion of many balconies, windows and doors which links the outdoors and indoors to allow the residents to experience all the spaces. The existing pool is also split into two and one is raised to create a kiddy pool for the kids. The space beside it is also laid with tiles to create a proper space for barbequing or any other outdoor activities for the family. 84
