THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE “The fridge was a good thing. The others don’t have a fridge. A fridge is fantastic because there is a bewildering array of stuff in the fridge – all the different vaccines and a lot of them are quite similar.”

Pharmacy smoking push

THE Pharmacy Guild says that Australia’s community pharmacies “stand ready to help smokers quit their expensive and deadly habit,” with a suggestion that some of the increased tobacco excise announced by the government yesterday should be directed to “smoker patient pharmacy support programs”. Guild President Kos Sclavos said that “probably less than 1 per cent” of the estimated $5.3 billion in extra revenue - that would equate to say $50 million - would make a huge difference to outcomes. “Any increase in the tobacco excise is an important part of the armoury of reducing smoking,” he said. “However to be fully effective, it must be accompanied by a

FDA pulls Nova tests THE US Food and Drug Administration says it’s working with Nova Diabetes Care to recall 21 lots of Nova Max Blood Glucose Test Strips and Nova Max Plus Glucose Meter Kits. The recall pertains to certain lots of these test strips distributed in the United States and 14 other countries including Canada, Chile, Peru, the UK, Germany and more but not Australia. As many as 62 million strips may be affected by the recall, with the company saying they became contaminated with a chemical used during the manufacturing process. Patients are being told to discontinue their use immediately, because “a false reading could result in patient harm and delay critical care”.

comprehensive and systemised approach to supporting patients overcome this deadly addiction. “Community pharmacies are well equipped to help smokers take that beneficial step,” Sclavos said, with pharmacists and pharmacy staff already “working very day at the coal face of smoking cessation”. He said that community pharmacies are so often the first point of call for Australians wanting to discuss a variety of health issues, making them ideally placed to “instil the initial motivation to quit smoking.” A systematic approach would include quit management plans, health promotion services, ongoing advice and support, triage and referral services. “The Guild has been a longstanding advocate approach of this active quitting approach for many years and stands ready to roll out such a systemised approach working in collaboration with other health professionals including GPs”.

Medicines safety The TGA has issued the Aug edition of its Medicines Safety Update, with topics including vancomycin and nephrotoxicity, dexmedetomidine hydrochloride and cardiovascular events, as well as bevacizumab and necrotising fascitis. Also covered is dapagliflozin, the first SGLT2 (selective and reversible inhibitor of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2) - a new class of drugs indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

ACT PSOTY winner TESSA Lane from the University of Canberra has been named the ACT’s 2013 Pharmacy Student of the Year, and will compete for the national title at the PSA’s Pharmacy Australia Congress in Brisbane.
