WA approves PSA pharm vax training THE Western Australian Department of Health has approved the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia’s (PSA) pharmacist immunisation training.

The PSA said its training was recognised under the Australian Vocational Education and Training sector and accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority.

The training involves two parts: online pre-reading and face to face workshops, and costs $550.

PSA national president Grant Kardachi said approval of the training aligned with moves in other states and territories to allow pharmacist-administered immunisations.

Services ‘grab for money’ THE Senate Select Committee on Health has heard that expansion of services for pharmacists is an “embarrassing grab for money”.

At a public hearing last week regarding the government’s proposed policies to cut the Medicare rebate by about $5 and freeze rebate indexation until 2018, GPs told the Committee diversion into alternative means of accessing care, such as charity groups and non-government organisations, was likely with the rebate cut.

This would lead to a “vastly inferior health system” for the poor and disadvantaged, Alexander said, whether accessed through clinics or pharmacies.

As general practice “go to the wall” with the new health policy, pharmacists and the “powerful pharmacy guild” were “talking about how they want to do ear infections”, Alexander said.

PHARMACY of the Year (POTY) finalist SuperPharmacyPlus in Queensland contains an IGA x-press supermarket, raising questions about fairness, news.com.au has reported.

Co-owner Roy Packer told the publication the pharmacy was nominated for the professional services it supplies, including a dietitian.

A Guild spokesperson was quoted as saying the awards were run by an independent panel of judges and while the Guild did not support pharmacies in supermarkets, this was different, as the supermarket was owned by a pharmacist, not a corporate entity.

“It is not about health care; it is about people grabbing little bits and cherry picking the bits that they want,” he said, adding that fragmenting patient care was detrimental to patient health.

A Pharmacy Guild spokesperson said the Guild “completely” rejected the assertion that seeking broader community pharmacy services was a “grab for money”.

“All over the world, health systems are making more use of the medicine and health care expertise of community pharmacies, and it is about time Australia reaped similar benefits.”

Guild: Close the Gap proposal THE Pharmacy Guild has said it agrees with the Prime Minister in that, despite some improvement, there was still “so much to be done” in Closing the Gap. The Prime Minister said 2015 would be a year focussed on action, and the Guild said it was working on a number of costed proposals for the government on pharmacy’s contribution to improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

These included a submission to run a trial of a Medicines Review Service to Remote Area Aboriginal Health Services patients by community pharmacies, which would be funded through the existing Community Pharmacy Agreement arrangements, and would aim to provide a culturally appropriate Medicines Review Service to enhance quality use of medicines and reduce adverse drug events, the Guild said.

6CPA update THE Pharmacy Guild has put a “comprehensive proposal” for the Sixth Community Pharmacy Agreement to the Health Minister and other political officers.

Writing in forefront, executive director David Quilty said the next Agreement “must” address how much price disclosure was hurting pharmacy, with a first priority of securing the level of remuneration needed to ensure dispensaries were profitable in their own right, as well as a “transparent” funding regime for services such as DAAs. The award aims to “recognise an outstanding interprofessional team that has improved patients’ health and promoted a collaborative approach to healthcare”.

ASMI: alt S3 policy THE Australian Self Medication Industry (ASMI) has called for an alternative regulatory model which would highlight Schedule Three options to consumers.

As part of the organisation’s pre-Budget submission, ASMI executive director Dr Deon Schoombie said the proposed model would be distinct from conventional advertising in that it would emphasise information about symptoms, product specific information and requirement for counselling by a pharmacist.

The submission called on the government to review Australia’s scheduling environment as it was not conducive to increasing access to non-prescription medicines.

Did you know a rare side effect of ADHD medication can be Nocturnal Eating Disorder?

Kate Archibald certainly does, having been diagnosed after a year spent waking up full and surrounded by food packaging, the Telegraph reported.

Archibald apparently took Adderall for ADHD at boarding school and would wake up hungry as the appetite-suppressant effects of the medication wore off.

While at school she feasted nocturnally from the tuck box at the end of her bed, but the symptoms went away while she was at university because she was on a lower dose and didn’t have food in her room.

Archibald was formally diagnosed after moving out with friends where she found she was putting on weight - as well as enduring complaints from flatmates about stolen food.

Apparently, the weirdest thing Archibald ever ate was an entire wheel of cheddar cheese.

SPEAKING of unusual appetites, a very large newborn baby in the USA is apparently eating twice as much as other infants.

The 6.4 kg (14.1 lb) boy was delivered at the St Joseph’s Women’s Hospital in Tampa, Florida and is the biggest ever baby born in the state.

His mother, Maxxzandra Ford, said she had gained a lot of weight during her pregnancy, and initially thought she must be having twins.

Baby Avery was delivered naturally after an 18 hour labour.

The boy’s father, clearly a keen football fan, proudly told the Tampa Bay Times “I got a linebacker now instead of a fullback”.
