COVAX could lead to prescribing PHARMACISTS’ role in administering COVID-19 vaccines (COVAX) could pave the way for the expansion of the profession’s scope of practice Primary Care Pharmacy Association President and Brentworth Primary Care Network (PCN) Clinical Director, Dr Graham Stretch, believes.

Speaking during a webinar on Tue night, Stretch told Australian pharmacists that they could leverage the “idea that a prescribing professional can be so much more effective in a situation when you have an unlicenced medicine.

“I’ve fought some battles with the Australian Medical Association around pharmacist prescribing over the years,” he said.

“It seems to me this might be an opportunity to demonstrate the fact that being a prescriber would make us much more autonomous, much more able to deliver the scale for my patients and actually any improvement in the profile

Stretch added that the UK is about to start graduating pharmacist prescribers, which he described as “a huge way forward”, while acknowledging “it’s not without its detractors - even amongst our own profession”.

Capsule warning PATIENTS are being urged to take any Resurrection Male Sexual Enhancement capsules to their local pharmacy for disposal after they were found to contain undeclared substances, including sildenafil, tadalafil and dipyrone.

The TGA noted dipyrone is not found on the Poisons Standard, but is a derivative of Schedule 10 substance, aminophenazone.

Look before you leap PHARMACIST indemnity insurer, Pharmaceutical Defence Limited (PDL), is urging pharmacies to consider their dispensing procedures to minimise errors.

In a practice alert issued yesterday PDL reported that its professional officers “receive numerous reports each year involving errors where there appears to be a lack of thought process and risk assessment”.

“Pharmacists are considered the gatekeepers for medicines and must ensure the prescribed medicine is safe and appropriate,” the alert said.

Thorough history taking, counselling and provision of additional information is as important as ensuring the prescribed medicine is dispensed correctly.

“Dispensing is not just a ‘check and flick’ process.”

The alert noted that PDL was aware of cases where patients were prescribed eczema treatment, Elidel cream, was prescribed for children and adults, but anti-cancer medication, Efudix cream, was dispensed.

“In one case, a patient received Efudix instead of Elidel and used it

on their face for several weeks,” the insurer said.

“This resulted in discomfort, time off work and a demand for compensation.

“Counselling the patient and asking what the product was for should have alerted the pharmacist that there was an error given the different indications of the two products.”

PDL also reported that issues related to prescriptions for Atropine eye drops for children and young adults persisted, despite previous practice alerts warning pharmacists to ensure the correct strength (usually 0.01%) is dispensed.

Dispensary Corner COVID-19-INDUCED lockdowns have given some people a bit too much time to indulge in their obnoxious side.

Take the example of the individual who sacrificed what one can only assume was a good portion of their day to correspond with Irish Pharmacy Union Secretary General, Darragh O’Loughlin.

In a tweet posted this morning, O’Loughlin revealed that he received a lengthy email with a four-page letter and appendices voicing concerns over his support for COVID-19 vaccines.

The unnamed author described the pharmacy leaders as “an evil, dictatorial, bullying, intimidation, babykilling monster” for advocating vaccination against the pandemic virus that has claimed the lives of thousands of his compatriots.

“That’s just the first page,” he said.

“I haven’t read pages two to four, or the appendices, but I imagine the theme continues unabated.”

Referencing an article in the National Catholic Reporter, which noted “Pope Francis suggested that people have a moral obligation to receive one of the new coronavirus vaccines as soon as possible”, O’Loughlin said he thought he was on “pretty solid ground”.

“When you’ve got the European Medicines Agency, the World Health Organization and the Pope aligned, you’d think you have it covered,” he said.

“Apparently not.”
