MEDICARE Benefits Schedule (MBS) reimbursements to support non-medical practitioner involvement in case conferencing would be a “game changer in improving safe and quality use of medicines (QUM)” the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA) believes.

PSA National President, Associate Professor Chris Freeman, backed proposals in the MBS Review Taskforce’s final report, which was released earlier this week, to provide a rebate to encourage non-medical health professionals, including pharmacists, to take part in case conferences.

“PSA has championed pharmacists’ access to collaborative care items on the MBS for a long period of time and this recommendation to the Federal Health Minister brings us one step closer to achieving this,” he said.

“Creating MBS items for nonmedical health practitioners to

align with the equivalent GP items will foster better collaboration and enhanced safe and quality use of medicine outcomes for patients.

“This recommendation, if implemented by Government, means pharmacists will be one of the eligible groups to be remunerated for participation in interdisciplinary case conferences.

“Across community pharmacies, aged care, and in general practice the change to case conference reimbursement in addition to the recent introduction of the follow

up medication reviews will be a game changer in improving the safe and quality use of medicines.”

Freeman added that the expansion of MBS items would support efforts to strengthen, modernise and protect the Australian health system, ensuring it is able to meet the needs of patients into the future.

“We look forward to working with the Federal Government to progress relevant recommendations to implementation,” he said.

Dispensary Corner BETTER beware who’s coming down your chimney this Christmas, with Santa Claus now being accused of being a COVID-19 “superspreader”.

About 75 residents and staff in an aged care facility in Antwerp, Belgium have been diagnosed with coronavirus after a visit by a red-suited volunteer at a festive event last week.

Unfortunately the jolly red fellow was asymptomatically in the early stages of COVID-19, and fell ill three days after his visit, by which stage the virus was running rampant.

Initially authorities at the care home insisted rules around social distancing and masks had been strictly followed, but photos on social media of the at-the-time happy occasion have confirmed that wasn’t actually the case.

AND while we’re on the subect, here’s a good way of containing COVID-19 - conduct a software update on your IT systems.

That’s what officials in the US state of Montana did on Mon this week, with a makeover of the statewide communicable disease reporting system requiring the platform to be shut down for 24 hours.

“So no cases could be reported to the state for today’s update,” they said, meaning that in contrast to the recent trend of about 1,000 new cases each day, the official figure was zero.

Authorities said the anomaly would be addressed in the next few days as local public health workers catch up on data entry.

Victoria needs primary care push A SURGE in 000 ambulance calls on Mon in Victoria is prompting calls for the State Government to push patients towards primary care providers including pharmacists and GPs. After months of COVID-19-related restrictions, during which many patients missed regular GP checkups, Ambulance Victoria received more than 2,000 calls, as high temperatures took their toll on people, prompting the emergency service to post a tweet encouraging those not urgently requiring care to “call Nurse on Call” rather than 000.

Victorian Health Minister, Michael Foley, told The Age that patients should “take more control of their health and wellbeing themselves”. “[They should] make sure they engage with their pharmacist and their GP, so those more routine

matters can be dealt with through other mechanisms rather than calling 000 in the middle of a very hot night,” he said.

Pharmacy Guild of Australia Victorian Branch President, Anthony Tassone, backed the Minister’s advice, and called on the State Government to re-run its 2018 ‘Save 000 for emergencies’ campaign, to promote primary care as a first port of call for patients.

“The Victorian Government should seriously consider re-running this important message for the public,” he said.

“As Victorians we have made tremendous sacrifices this year to ‘flatten the curve’ in the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and then another subsequent lockdown to ensure the health system was not overwhelmed.

“We must work smarter not just harder and do it together in our health system, as we can’t stand by and see our emergency departments and ambulances overrun during ‘business as usual’ healthcare delivery.

“Community pharmacies are an essential and accessible service for the public.
