Osteoporosis drug to treat BRCA1 cancer researchers may have found a much less invasive method than performing a mastectomy to help prevent aggressive breast cancer developing in women with the faulty BRCA1 gene.

Researchers at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute believe the drug denosumab, usually used to treat osteoporosis, could “switch off the culprit cells before they go on to produce breast tumours”.

The researchers concluded that denosumab injections could be used in women with a high risk of breast cancer as a preventive measure.

“We’re optimistic that if it works it would be the sort of strategy that would help young women buy time before they need to consider the issues of mastectomy,” Professor Geoff Lindeman from the institute told the ABC. Researchers at NYU Langone Medical Center are planning to conduct a clinical trial to further examine the changes in breast tissue when a dose of denosumab is administered.

AMR - who’s responsible?

All health professionals incuding pharmacists, as well as consumers, have a responsibility to work together to reduce Australia’s dependence on antibiotics and resultant increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) according to the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA).

With the recently released Antimicrobial Use and Resistance in Australia (AURA) report showing Australia lagging behind other nations on managing AMR in the community, the PSA said pharmacists can play a fundamental role in antimicrobial stewardship in Australia.

PSA national president Joe Demarte said, “The pharmacy profession in partnership with the Federal Government, other health practitioners and consumers, must make an effective and sustained contribution to a national response to antimicrobial resistance.

“Advice about the use of antibiotics must be disseminated to consumers, in addition to antibiotic awareness weeks and other timelimited campaigns.”

Demarte pointed out that many people suffering from flu or respiratory problems may think a treatment with antibiotics is needed.

“However pharmacists can give the proper counselling for these

health problems, ensuring that patients have a good understanding of their illness and realistic expectations of its progression,” he said.

Demarte added that the PSA is continuing to work closely with the Federal Government to strengthen consumer awareness, to enhance communication between all stakeholders and education for pharmacists as well as to encourage increases in vaccination rates to prevent infections.

FDA boosts generics In WHAT may prove to be a significant precedent, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has won a case in the US Supreme Court where in an attempt to limit drug prices, according to a report from Modern Healthcare.

The Supreme Court decided Monday in a patent case not actually relating to drugs, but potentially precedential, to affirm a lower court ruling allowing the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board to continue using a broader standard than federal courts when it comes to interpreting patent claims.

In 2011, Congress began allowing patent challengers to take their fight before the board, rather than to federal court, as an alternative to costly, time-consuming court battles.

The result may have implications across many industries wherever patents and innovation matter, the article said.

Minimal opt-out MHR Less than 2% of the 971,000 people involved in the two trial areas for the opt-out version of My Health Record (MHR) have actually chosen not to keep a digital record of their health, according to a report from Pulse+IT. The two trial areas are Far North Queensland and the NSW Blue Mountains regions.

Uptake of the opt-in model across Australia has been dismally low, forcing the need to experiment with the opt-out model in this pilot program (PD 29 Oct 15).

Cough & cold sales up

Perhaps not surprisingly, sales of throat lozenges and tissues consistently peak in winter months, according to latest findings from Roy Morgan Research.

In the 12 months to Mar 2016, 36.2% of Australians 14 years and older bought tissues/paper handkerchiefs and 9.0% bought throat lozenges/cough lollies in an average four-week period.

These figures have remained relatively stable over the last few years, the report said.

Quarterly figures paint a different picture with more Australians buying tissues and cough lollies during the Jul-Sep period than any other quarter.

For example in 2015, 14.0% of Aussies bought cough lozenges and 39.7% bought tissues in an average four-week period during the Jul-Sep quarter, as opposed to 5.6% and 32.0% respectively in the Jan-Mar quarter.

The research showed that conversely, the proportion of people purchasing cough lollies drops steeply during the Jan-Mar quarter while sales of tissues also slump at this time of the year, although the contrast is not as dramatic.

The data also revealed that at any time of the year, a higher proportion of women than men buy these products, and during the peak Jul-Sep quarter, this pattern is especially apparent.

Diabetes AD link University of Aberdeen has revealed new links between diabetes and Alzheimer’s Disease.

It found drugs used to treat diabetes could also be used to treat Alzheimer’s Disease, and vice versa.

Further to this it showed Alzheimer’s can lead to diabetes, as opposed to diabetes occurring first.

The paper, published Diabetologia, found for the first time that dementia-related complications within the brain can also lead to changes in glucose.

“Until now, we always assumed that obese people get type 2 diabetes and then are more likely to get dementia – we now show that actually it also works the other way around,” head researcher Professor Bettina Plat said.

“The good news is that there are a number of new drugs which we are testing to see if they would reverse both Alzheimer’s and diabetes,” Plat continued.

PHARMAC fund fail Following feedback from member pharmacies on the consultation around margin funding to community pharmacy in New Zealand, the Pharmacy Guild of NZ has submitted to the Programme Director, Community Pharmacy Services Agreement, that PHARMAC is fundamentally underfunded.

Repeated reduction of margins for community pharmacy businesses with the downward pressure on drug prices has created an unsustainable ROI environment for pharmacies procuring and carrying stock for medicines supplied, said the submission.

“Without any additional funding from DHB, no solution will address this underfunding,” said the report.

DISPENSARY CORNER biodegradable coffins are one thing, but dissolving the dead and pouring them into the town sewers is quite another.

This unconventional method is being used as an environmentally friendly option for disposing of the dead by Canadian funeral firm Aquagreen Dispositions.

Apparently local officials are keeping a close eye on the company which is using an alkaline solution to dissolve bodies in a heated and pressurised container (pictured below).

The skeleton is ground into a powder and given to loved ones while the left over liquid is filtered and sent to the town’s sewage treatment system.

“You come in by water, and you leave by water,’ says business owner Dale Hilton.

“It’s green, all the way around”.

He reckons it’s the way of the future - dust to dust.

IF THERE’S one place what you wear makes an impression, it would have to be in court.

If you’re appearing to plead your innocence on cannabis possession charges it’s probably best not to wear a shirt sporting a promarijuana motif.

But that’s exactly the move a 25-year-old man in Malta pulled this week.

His defence that the drugs and stolen phone hidden under a car weren’t actually his own, didn’t support his case either.

He was denied bail because he has no fixed address.
