Pb: You’ve often been called the East African Dancehall Music Pioneer; what still makes the Genre so Special to you after all these years? Rs: I’m a hardcore Dancehall fan; and we all know that to be good at something, you have to understand it and enjoy it. I love the groove of Dancehall and Reggae, so I guess that is what drove me to deliver great Music to the market. Pb: How long have you been Singing and when did you Discover your Passion for Music? Rs: I think that I have been in this Industry as long as PHAT!buzz has. So, I can say it’s been 15 years and counting. It all started for me when I won the Star Search, at Carnivore, back in 2000. I then met Shaggy in 2001 and we performed together the very first time he came to Kenya. That inspired me even more, as later that year I met with Lucas of Ogopa Deejays and we started the movement. We were then joined by Uganda’s Bebe Cool and Chameleone, to subsequently form the first East African Bashement Crew. Bebe Cool moved to Uganda, but Chameleone and I stayed behind with Lucas to produced Hits like: ‘Julie my Lover’, ‘Mama Mia’, ‘Wanipa Raha’ and many more. Pb: January is largely a Month of new Beginnings; so what are some of your Resolutions? Rs: [laughs] Resolutions.. hmm I’m not really the Type to note things down and follow them strictly... let me think. Well in short, I will do Everything better. [smiles] Pb: How has the Redsan we knew from 2001’s ‘Malaika’, changed to 2014’s ‘Touch Me There’? Rs: Well we all know that Life is an experience that mixes Feelings and Moments: how you Take each of these, Defines the time you’re in. ‘Malaika’ was a different feeling at that time and ‘Touch Me There’ is an entirely different feeling. I make Music based on how I feel and the Time I’m in: if I go to the Studio and record a Song that I don’t Feel, I will never release it; because it all comes down to what you Feel. So you have to be as Real as the moment you are in, to understand what you’re doing. Pb: What’s the one thing you’re most Proud of? Rs: My Family, my Fans, my Life and my Country. [laughs] I’ve just noticed that’s not one thing. Pb: You released ‘Touch Me There’ late last year. What was the Inspiration behind it and why did you collaborate with Nyla? Rs: Well, ‘Touch Me There’ is basically a Love Song about how one Feels when they know someone out there is Thinking of them, Missing them and Cares. If you say you miss me, then you “touch me there” - in the special part of someone’s Heart. Redsan

Pb: What’s it like being Signed onto Sony Music Africa and working with them on your latest Tracks? Rs: I mean it all comes down to hard work; and hard work really does pay off. I put hard work into my Music and I make sure that my Fans, all over the World, get satisfied with the Messages in my Songs. I also try to be as different from other Artist as possible, so that it’s pretty simple for a major Label like Sony to pick you out from the Crowd. Pb: What international Artist(s) did you most enjoy Singing alongside? Rs: I have worked with so many talented Legends in the music world; the likes of: Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Demarco, Brick & Lace, Akon, Shaggy, Ali Kiba, AY, Shaa, Nonini and many others; so it’s hard for me to pinpoint my favourite moments. All these guys have special touches of class in their Music, that is attractive and I enjoy diversity; so I can only say Big Up to everyone I’ve worked with so far. Pb: Other than Music, what else are you involved in? Rs: I put most of my time into Music, especially now that I’m with Sony. It’s all about the next Song, the next Plan, the next Tour and the next Artist to collaborate with.

JONATHAN BUTLER SET TO HEADLINE THE 2015 SAFARICOM INTERNATIONAL JAZZ FESTIVAL Jonathan Butler had a penchant for Music as early as the age of six; which was when he began singing Tom Jones on his knees and people would throw Money at him during his Performance. This was a welcome sign for a young boy, who grew up in Poverty - all he wanted to do was to be able to provide for his Family. Born during 1961, in Cape Town; at the startling age of 12 he was signed to Zomba in South Africa and given his first Recording Contract, a testament to the depth his first hit Single - a Burt Bacharach track, entitled: ‘Please Stay’. It shot straight to number two on the Pop Charts of the Country - a significant feat for a Black African, then in apartheid South Africa. His first Single also earned him a Sarie Award, which was then South Africa’s equivalent to the American Grammy Award. Apartheid was the subject for most of his work throughout the 1970s, though he wasn’t as hardcore, as some of his contemporaries, in his Protest singing. In 1977, he was signed onto London-based Jive Records and released a predominantly instrumental Album. The style of Jonathan Butler was then broadly Categorised as Acoustic Guitar, RnB/Pop, Soul and now Gospel. Through the mid-2000s, Butler featured in a host of Charts and Collections, such as the University of Alabama’s 2006 Gospel Goes Classical and George Duke’s 2008 Album: Dukey Treats. His Discography includes: Do You Love Me?, More Than Friends, Grace and Mercy, Surrender, Jonathan, Merry Christmas to You and last year’s release: Living My Dream. Jonathan Butler shall be the Headline Act for the 2nd Safaricom International Jazz Festival on Sunday 22nd February 2015. Tickets will be On Sale this month at selected Safaricom Shops.

Often referred to as the Mix Genius, DJ Sadic a.k.a Marvin Sande, is no stranger to the realm of Gospel music in Kenya; and subsequently tailored TV shows. DJ Sadic gave his Life to Christ in early 2003 and started Deejaying while he was in High School. He teamed up with a number of other Christian Deejay outfits, before joining the Genius Republic to Mentor, Train and help in Spreading the Gospel. All this he says he obtained during his time as a Youth Leader at the Winners Chapel Youth and Mavuno Church Teens Connect. Though he currently hosts the Award-winning Show: Tendereza, on KTN; DJ Sadic has hosted numerous Shows, including: The Crossover and The Crossover Chart on NTV, Mwamba on Homeboyz Radio, the Plugin show on Hope FM and the Replay show on Truth FM. He’s also been the Tour Deejay for the Kenyan Artist: Juliani. The Mix Genius was, up until 2013, part of one of the biggest Gospel DJ Academies dedicated to nurturing
DJ Sadic
talent and giving aspiring or established Deejays and Artists the opportunity to further their Careers – System Unit. Mystery had surrounded the circumstances under which he left the Unit, that had been set up alongside MC Alemba, DJ Mo and Hey-Z; until he stated that his Exit was purely motivated by the need to establish something of his Own. DJ Sadic has toured the United States, South Africa, Zambia and Malawi. He has also won a major haul of Awards, that include: 2011 Groove Awards’ DJ of the Year, 2010 Chaguo la Teeniez (CHAT)’s Gospel Song of the Year, 2013 Mwafaka Awards’ DJ of the Year and the 2014 Xtreem Teeniz TV Presenter of the Year. “Winning souls for Christ is what God has put in my Heart”, says DJ Sadic, who also pays tribute to the likes of System Unit’s DJ Mo and DJ Crème de la Crème, whose hard work and Commitment he admires.
