This month, we hang out with Rash Band; a Rock Band made up of: Sam Mwangi – Lead Singer, Maximiliano ‘Max’ Filardi – Lead Guitarist, Yubu Kazungu – Rhythm Guitarist, Jona Mwendwa – Bassist & Sam ‘Gakosh’ Gakungu – Drummer. Pb: What does the name “Rash” stand for? RB: Max, who is the Band’s architect, came up with the name, and he was going for something that was odd, but memorable. As the name might suggest, the Band represents music that is goosebumps-inducing. Music that is so good, it could raise the little hairs on the back of your neck and gives you chills. Pb:Who are your biggest Influences? RB: We are an Electric bunch with different backgrounds. We each grew up to different kinds of music, from R&B, Soul, Lingala. Rhumba, Rock & Roll, Blues and Reggae. Each of us brought our different tastes to the table. However, the vibe that stands out in most of our music is reminiscent of the 70s and 80s rock and roll scene and a little of blues. Think, AC/ DC, the Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Buddy Guy and BB King. Pb:How did you meet? RB: Max had the burning desire to form a band back when he was studying International Relations in USIU. He happened to bump into an ex-member, Abed ‘Abedi’ Kariuki, then, Rhythm Guitarist, playing ‘Nothing Else Matters’ by Metallica somewhere in the school. They decided to meet up occasionally and jam. Max has a brother who was our first bassist, Sebastián ‘Sebas’ Filardi. However, he had to go back to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Fortunately, we found Jona in one of our gigs, and he happened to be a bassist as well. Abedi also knew Gakosh and brought him to be our drummer. A few years down the line, Abedi had to leave but we knew Yubu whose blues background could complement our sound.
Pb:When and why did you start playing? RB: The band has been active since July of 2013, so that makes it 5 years and we love & appreciate the journey. Music to us is a gateway from our mundane lives. It's also our way of expression. To some of us, it's our bread and butter. Pb:Do you get nervous before a performance? RB Oh yes! Butterflies and pre-performance gitters are almost always there. It means you actually care that you need to deliver an amazing show and give the fans their money's worth. But besides regular and consistent rehearsal, each of us has their own pregig routine that we religiously follow to ensure that we deliver a killer performance. Pb:What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps? RB: Besides talent, you need to have consistent rehearsal. Also, go out of your way to look for opportunities, network, invest in your craft but most important, don't just be band mates be a brotherhood. Apart from our love of Music, we enjoy each other's company and that goes a long way in creating camaraderie and trust.

MY REAL NAME IS: Joseph Wambugu Kagiri.
I GOT MY STAGE NAME FROM: a need to Rebrand. I started out as Deejay Gramps and later changed it to Deejay Tremor. I STUDIED AT: Meru University of Science and Technology. I USUALLY PLAY: all Sorts of Music to fit the right Occasion for all Clients. IT’S BEEN : 4 ½ Years. MY MAJOR CHALLENGE WHEN STARTING OUT: was raising funds to pay for the DJ Academy School/To overcome this, I had to look for side hustles, and also having to look for help from my family, who supported me a great deal. ONE OF MY MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS: was winning the Safaricom Twaweza Live 2018 DJ at the Regional Raw Talent Audition for the Mt Kenya Region. IF I WASN’T A DEEJAY I’D BE: a Business Man. I am so much into business and actually already laying the ground work for various investment portfolios. I never miss out on any investment/ economic conferences. MY EXPERIENCE AT SAFARICOM TWAWEZA LIVE HAS BEEN: Tremendous. I had an amazing experience working with great people, the networking (more exchange of ideas and best practices). Safaricom Twaweza Live has indeed opened up/and still is opening up numerous opportunities for me. “When we come together, great things happen”. There is no exercise better for the heart than reaching down and lifting people up. I am currently working with Generation Of Hope (A movement by various enthusiast young men/women in Meru to try transform the lives of the street kids in Meru).
