This is my first message after my recent appointment to the Presidency of the Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association. I am very proud to have been selected to serve and I would like to thank out-going MPMCA President Nancy Cummins for her time of service and her outstanding leadership. It is volunteers such as Nancy that make our organization such a success. As you are reading this magazine, we have just finished our 2017 Expo. I would like to extend my thanks to Executive Director Cynthia Maher and her administrative assistant, Sharon Bianchi, for the tremendous work they put into making it so successful. With all the new products and ideas at our fingertips, 2017 should be an exciting time for our trade. If you have never attended the expo, I encourage you to do so at the event next year on March 14, 2018. Mark your calendar today for next year’s Expo! y last letter as President of the MPMCA — I’m very melancholy! I have to tell you that I can’t believe it has been three years. The time has gone by so fast.

We have made some great strides during this time through the commitment of our tremendous staff and hardworking officers and board of directors.

As my term comes to an end, I want to thank Executive Director Cindy Maher and her assistant, Sharon Bianchi. They make the job easy.

The backflow program has been completely revamped, and we have secured an office location dedicated entirely to the program. The equipment is there for members to practice and work toward their certification.

Chad Myers was elected the new president at our annual meeting. I know he will do a great job, and as I will still be around as treasurer, I offer my support and assistance anytime he may need me. James Bruner has retired from the board and I want to thank him for the many hours and years he has given the MPMCA.

Our MPMCA Magazine continues to keep our members and the Industry informed on the activities of the organization, including legislation, codes, educational programs, and the services of our local associations. The magazine’s volunteer issue continues to expand each year outlining the numerous programs our chapters participate in, including, HEAT’s ON Project, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts, and working with schools, among others. The MPMCA Plumbing and Mechanical EXPO continues to be the perfect place for contractors, suppliers, journeymen and apprentices, and others involved in the industry to gather together, see new products, and have the opportunity to interact. Throughout the magazine you will see a report on this year’s Expo. Educational programs continue on new licensing and codes, safety programs, new laws, and working to educate all on the many ongoing changes in the construction industry.

As I worked with our office I became very proud of the relationship between MPMCA and it local chapters, the legislature, other construction associations, and of course the most importantly, our members.

When I accepted the position I was apprehensive about having the time to handle the responsibility, but now I can’t believe it’s over. You are a large part of the success for the organization. Get more involved. Along with helping MPMCA, you will be helping yourself as you meet and become friends with others in the plumbing and mechanical industry. Greater Michigan PMCA Cynthia Maher Receives Duane E. Branch Award of Excellence Nancy Cummins presented the Duane E. Branch Award of Excellence to Cindy Maher at our annual Inspectors Luncheon. When a deserving individual is nominated or comes to our attention the Award of Excellence is presented by Greater Michigan PMC. Cynthia became the fourth recipient of the Duane E. Branch Award. The first recipient was retiring Chief of the Plumbing Division, then Ivory Sims, Retired City of Ann Arbor Inspector and University of Michigan Inspector, and Scott Klapper, former Apprenticeship Training Director and UA Director. Cindy was honored for the tremendous dedication she has shown to the Industry, particularly on the recent Skilled Trades Legislation and Plumbing and Mechanical legislative issues throughout the years.

Inspectors Luncheon The Greater Michigan PMC held its Annual Inspector’s Luncheon in January, 2017, after being snowed out in December of 2016. The luncheon program was emceed by Nancy Cummins, PMC Vice President, Hutzel Plumbing & Heating, and current President of MPMCA. It gives all in attendance the opportunity to hear what is coming from each of the departments in the New Year. This luncheon provides an ideal opportunity for contractors and their employees to meet with local officials in an informal setting to discuss items of mutual concern.

Cynthia Maher, Executive Director, MI Mechanical Contractors Association reviewed recent legislative issues and new regulations. From a number of retirees, a full house of members and inspectors, Michigan MCA’s Executive Director Cindy Maher (pictured left), all the necessary ingredients for a remarkable holiday party were there. The program also gives us the opportunity of gather donations for the Marine Corp’s Toys for Tots and Food Gatherers. This year we again combined our volunteering for these organizations with our Annual Inspectors Luncheon. Those attending were notified that if they were interested in donating, receptacles would be available during the luncheon for Toys for Tots and Food Gatherers, with a number of the people involved participating by donating to the cause.

Flint Michigan PMCA Local Association of the Year Award Each year we honor a local association of the year --- not only for its activities that serve their membership, but also for the value that these local associations add to their communities, their support of our industry, and for their support of the Michigan Plumbing & Mechanical Contractors Association. The 2017 recipient is involved with both the MPMCA and is also active in Michigan MCA. The MMCA President is a Flint Member. The Flint Water crisis affected not only the Flint area, but was news around the country. In an effort to help UA 370, with the assistance of Flint PMC and other MCA chapters 470 union members organized from around the State of Michigan helped in the January 30 program, and subsequently other days efforts organized by 370 Business Manager Harold Harrington. Water bottles were delivered and state-supplied faucetmounted filters were installed in 1,533 homes. The volunteer plumbers first program placed 113 new faucets, when it was found that the existing faucets were inadequate for accepting the filters. The effort was aided by the donation of 68 service trucks/vans by 25 different union-affiliated Contractors. Flint PMSC is again supporting The Boy Scouts of American with a donation to The Water and Woods Field Service Council, which is a division of the Michigan Crossroads Council. The Michigan Crossroads Council gives young people the chance to have fun, gain confidence, and become leaders who live the Scout Oath and the Scout Law. What most young people are looking for is something that is not simply a job, but something creative, allowing them diversity and variation. Career information has been developed and distributed by the Association and Local UA showing students the career possibilities in the plumbing and pipefitting industry are virtually limitless. Contractors have donated trucks and employees for the Ferris and Greater MI Heat’s On Projects in the local Michigan area. Flint PMCA along with UA 370 Business Manager Harold Harrington were invited to the podium to receive the Association of the Year Award. At that time, Harold took the opportunity to present an award to the Flint PMCA which had a piece of lead pipe attached and read, This Piece of Lead Pipe Is A Section Of The First Water Service Line Replaced In Flint, Michigan, On March 4, 2016 As Part Of Mayor Karen Weaver’s “Fast Start Program”. The Pipe Was Removed And Replaced By Skilled Craftsman Of UA Local 370 Plumbers And Pipefitters.

3MCA’S LARRY GUNTHORPE APPOINTED TO MCAA’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS Over 3,000 members and guests came to San Diego March 5-9 for the Annual MCAA Convention. MCAA President Tom Stone opened the convention by encouraging everyone to take a moment to reflect on our success. The program included featured speakers John Boehner, Emmitt Smith, and Astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly.

The national officers who serve as MCAA’s Executive Committee and the new members of MCAA’s Board of Directors were introduced. MCAA’s Executive Committee includes Vice President and Assistant Treasurer Brian Helm, President-Elect Michael Brandt, President Greg Fuller, Senior Vice President and Treasurer Robert Durr Jr., and Immediate Past President Tom Stone.

The newest members of MCAA’s Board of Directors are: Larry Gunthorpe of Gunthorpe Plumbing & Heating, Inc. (East Lansing), Rick Gopffarth of Dynamic Systems, Inc. (Dallas), Stephen Harvey of Soefker Services (Memphis), and Sam Wallenstein of Neptune Plumbing & Heating Co. (Cleveland).

Larry Gunthorpe is also a member of MCAA’s Education Committee and he introduced Speaker Sam Horn for her presentation entitled: “Is the Light On in Your Eyes?”

3MCA WELCOMES MICHELLE PERKINS 3MCA would like to welcome Michelle Perkins to the Financial Office Manager position. Michelle brings over 20 years of executive administrative experience to 3MCA. TRAINEE JOB CLASSIFICATION ADDED TO LOCAL 174/WMMCA COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT To meet the needs of the WMMCA contractors and growing Local 174 workforce, a Memorandum of Understanding was agreed upon to add a trainee job classification to the Local 174/WMMCA collective bargaining agreement.

MCA Detroit Committees - Strengthening our Industry HVAC SERVICE COMMITTEE The most recent HVAC Service Member Committee meeting took place at Eddie Merlotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Bloomfield Hills on February 23, 2017. This meeting was a meet and greet between the MCA Detroit Service Employers/Managers with Theresa Danko, Union Local 636 Business Representative of the Refrigeration H.V.A.C. Service Division. Bob Kieleszewski, Director of Service Operations of John E. Green Co. and Mike Flesher, President of Arctic Air chair the meetings. Theresa Green of MCA Detroit serves as liaison for the HVAC Service Committee. These meetings facilitate understanding between union and management regarding the challenges both groups face individually while at the same time, give direction to working together to gain market share, as well as planning strategies to address the shortage of a quality skilled force.

SAFETY COMMITTEE Dan Giovannangeli, Safety Manager of Hoyt, Brumm & Link, Inc. is chairman of this committee. Dan hopes to streamline procedures and define goals that the Safety Committee will work on to benefit the business owners, unions and workers. Meetings will now occur on a monthly basis. Attendance is encouraged - it saves lives when knowledge is shared. Cassandra Mudloff of MCA Detroit serves as liaison for Safety Committee.

LOCAL ASSOCIATIONS

Bay Area Michigan PMCA LOOKING OUT FOR OTHERS The Bay Area Association shopped for new coats for the children and donated them to the “Coats for Kids” drive. Twenty-five new coats, hats, and scarves were delivered in time for the cold winter season ahead. The Bay Area Association in conjunction with Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 85 held another “Heats On” drive to help approximately 25 to 30 active members and veterans get their furnace, smoke detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors ready for the cold winter ahead. The Midland Armory served as a home base and we worked with them to assist veterans from their post. Also, we worked with the Bay City Armory to help their active as well as veterans. All houses had a furnace check and start up, changed filters, changed batteries in smoke detectors, and if needed, installed new ones. If minor broken items were discovered, we replaced those as well. On behalf of the Bay Area Association and Plumbers and Steamfitters Local Union 85, we would like to extend our gratitude and appreciation to Lee Burnham, and Josh Windy for organizing such a successful campaign. Your efforts have not gone unnoticed.

HIGHLIGHTS The 2017 Expo & MPMCA Annual meeting was held on March 28th and 29th Mt. Pleasant at the Soaring Eagle Casino & Resort. A full house, of over 3,000 products from over 400 manufacturers of plumbing-heating-cooling products were on display in the Entertainment Hall.

Instructor: Martin Jipson & Phyllis Centers, master plumbers, plumbing inspectors, & ASSE certified backflow testers and instructors.

This class is only for those individuals who currently hold a backflow certificate which requires recertification every 3 (three) years. You must recertify prior to the expiration date on your certification card. If you have questions regarding your recertification date, please call our office. If you have taken one of the MPMCA/ASSE backflow courses, we will notify you before your expiration date when you need to recertify by along with this registration form as a reminder.

MPMCA maintains a certified backflow test list for the State of Michigan which is updated daily on the MPMCA website. Check for your name and expiration date at www.mpmca.org/backflowsearch . Final examination of proficiency required for recertification will consist of passing a 25 question written examination and passing the practical portion as you did in the original class. Be sure to review the materials you received from your original class prior to attending this class. Come with any questions you may have and they will be addressed before the exam. Remember this is a recertification course. Cancellations must be received in writing by MPMCA, (emails are accepted), 18 days prior to the first day of class to receive refund. Cancellations less than 18 days, refunds only if we can fill your seat. If you cancel via US mail, we suggest using 'return receipt'.
