Self-Titled Issue
A Note from the Editor
The process of creating this magazine has been the wonderful experience I dreamt it to be from the beginning. It has allowed me to work with some of the artists I have respected for a long time. Many, not all, of the people in this first issue are people I went to school with. It has been a great experience seeing their art today, how it has grown from when I first knew them. Some of the people I reached out to blew me off, while others were more than willing to participate. I think working on any project, the team you have is most important. I could not ask for a better group of people to have kick started this project with. We are proud to present to you the first ever issue of Combobulate Magazine. This is the self-titled issue “Combobulate, which means : To put together in a somewhat mysterious manner. To bring something out of a state of confusion or disarray. To remove from clutter. To manufacture by some unusual or novel means. In this issue you will find People, Places, and Things that inspire us to create. My team and I hope that sharing this with you in turn inspires you to create.
Sincerely, Stephen Thomas

The Creative Struggle
Originality and Self Worth by Chris Gros
For me personally, the ultimate creative struggle is always selfworth for what I do. I find myself hitting a stalling point in not wanting to continue my work. Why? Because it’s NO GOOD! How many times do artist say that to themselves? How many times do we start from scratch, because the finished idea was far off the map of what we planned? ‘My story is terrible. No one is going to want to read this. This will never sell, it’s unmarketable, and it’s not original.’ If you have thoughts that what you’re doing is no good, remember this; even if your idea is something familiar and not
original, there was something, SOMETHING, which drew you to that idea in the first place. There was something you saw that you could make different, add a personal touch too. These are the fundamental truths of why creative people need to create. What would the world be like if George Lucas decided that Star Wars was a bogus idea? What if he thought it was a motley crew of zany space people practicing some ancient religion and taking on some military embraced culture, led by a man in a black cape? Your mind may tell you to stop and that it’s not good. But it is, otherwise you wouldn’t have thought of it in the first place. Go, and leave your mark on the world.

Draw Something by Stephen Thomas
My favorite new app for my phone has to be Draw Something by OMGPOP. I just cannot get enough! It is more than addicting! OMGPOP made Draw Something available on iPhone and Android! This app essentially is social finger painting. The way it works is you are given a choice of three words each at a different degree of difficulty. You choose the word you want to draw with your finger tip and your friend has to guess what word you are trying to draw. They allow you to link via Facebook, which makes finding matches a breeze. You can also make a random match. This is a great tool for the creative person. It’s great to get your mind off of stressful things at work, or just to have some creative fun with friends. Give it a try! You will have a blast!

Jenny’s Kitchen Veggie Burger by Jenny Sarpolis
These burgers are delicious, substantial, and healthy; and unlike other veggie burgers that try to imitate meat, these actually have veggies in them. They can easily be veganized by using an egg substitute as a binder and omitting the cheese, or using vegan cheese.
