hile a summer break is refreshing, there is no better feeling than reuniting with your brothers and picking up where you last left off. The Oregon Beta Chapter House has been buzzing with energy as we look to have an absolutely killer fall term. After signing three new recruits out of the Portland area this summer, we returned to Corvallis and began our Work Week endeavors. These projects compliment the Capital Campaign renovation very well while maintaining the classic Oregon Beta style that many alumni remember. Continued on page 5
than VanderZanden 1881 was first introduced to Phi Delta Theta through his cousin John VanderZanden 1849 and was quickly fond of the comradery at Oregon Beta. Soon after he pledged and as a member he has continued to make a positive impact on the chapter through his leadership and work ethic. “I really enjoyed the sense of brotherhood that the house had when I was rushing,” Ethan said. “Given the leadership opportunities in the house I hope to translate what I learn at Phi Delta Theta into whatever my future career is in the agriculture sector.” Ethan grew up in Hillsboro and attended Glencoe High School. He was captain of the soccer team, played basketball and baseball, and was a member of the National Honor Society. Now Ethan is a junior at Oregon State working toward a degree in agriculture business management with a minor in crop science. His goal is to utilize his education to build a career in which he can bring his knowledge back to the agriculture community. As a member of Oregon Beta, Ethan served as risk manager during his sophomore year and was the chapter warden during the fall term of 2019. On campus he is a member of the Oregon Youth Farm Bureau and is actively involved with BeTheMatch. Serving on Oregon Beta’s executive board has given Ethan the opportunity to travel and visit other Phi Delta Theta chapters while learning and discussing ideas that can benefit Oregon Beta. “I went to Washington Alpha at University of Washington for a Province Retreat with all of Oregon Beta’s executive board,” Ethan said. “We molded the trip into an executive retreat and learned how to properly recruit and what makes for a quality Phi. The biggest takeaway from this trip was learning the uniqueness of Continued on page 5
