randon Tesdall 1950 is a junior from Sherwood, Oregon, studying business administration. During the fall term, he is serving as the Phikeia educator at Oregon Beta and enjoys being in a position that benefits the Fraternity. The incoming class currently includes fifteen signed Phikeias, and after fall recruitment, the class will have an additional thirty to thirty-five new members. “My goal this fall is to teach the new Phikeias the history of Oregon Beta and also the international history of Phi Delta Theta,” Tesdall said. “I will rely on our Cardinal Principles which are Sound Learning, Rectitude, and Friendship. I will also strive to transmit the Fraternity better than it was transmitted to me.”

2021 OREGON BETA ALUMNI GOLF TOURNAMENT By David Clewett 1656

he 2021 Oregon Beta Alumni Golf Tournament was hosted September 10 at Langdon Farms with tremendous success, resulting in the largest turnout in event history. The tournament is organized by Scott Dickinson 1575, who is the sole member of the Golf Committee and makes all the arrangements. “It was just awesome to see so many Phis in person after the hiatus in 2020, with such a wide range of bond numbers and generations in attendance,” said Dickinson. Dickinson started work on this annual event eleven years ago, along with Steve Walker 1224, after the tournament had a one-year hiatus. At the time, both Dickinson and Walker believed

there was a need and interest in this tournament, but that someone needed to lead the organization and planning. “We felt that if we could create a small committee and communicate with great frequency, that the interest was there—it was just the organization that took a lot of time and effort,” Dickinson said. The duo started building an email distribution list that remains the primary means for communicating with over 500 alumni and draws interest each year for the event. Dickinson’s hard work and ongoing devotion resulted in this year’s Oregon Beta Golf Tournament garnering thirty-three teams with over 130 Phis in attendance. “In my personal life, we love having friends and family over to make great memories together,” Dickinson said. “What I have found is that Continued on page 2

ith fall term beginning, campus reopening, and football season starting, the optimism of the chapter couldn’t be better. It is hard to forget how tough the last year and a half was for the house. Recruitment was down, no socials or in-person activities were allowed, and morale was very down. Our members did an excellent job working with what we had and really tried to make the most out of the situation. However, since the university has lifted most of the COVID restrictions, our brothers can finally get back to a sense of normalcy with in-person activities. We are very excited to get re-engaged on campus through Continued on page 4

everyone loves getting together, and few like taking on the task of making it happen. After many of us were longing for social interaction this year, the smiles, laughs, and conversations from those in attendance made it all worth it.” The event brought out several generations of Phis, ranging from Tom Usher 728 to Max Seandel 1816, and even included several potential new members. The winning team of George Travis 1246, Mitch Olson 1250, Scott Larsen 1254, and Mike Buisman 1256 posted a -13 Gross 58 in the scramble format event. As such, they will have their names etched in history on the Oregon Beta Cup Trophy. The tournament itinerary allowed for a relaxed atmosphere with plenty of time to socialize. Check-in started at noon, with some people showing up early to warm up or see other brothers. Beer was available, and it was a fun atmosphere for everyone. The tournament started at 1:30 p.m. and concluded at 6:30 p.m. with a dinner and awards ceremony for top finishers, long drive, and closest to the pin. Dinner was brief, which allowed groups to depart for their own social events. “I have had the opportunity to work with the staff at Langdon Farms for five years, and they are truly the best in the business when it comes to running tournaments,” Dickinson said. “We had hosted this event at other courses previously, but our committee always had the desire to move to Langdon once we could garner enough interest. Besides being a great course and running the event so well, the location on the south end of Portland allows alumni south of Portland to access the event more easily.” There was a three-way tie for second with the team of James Young 1212, Doug Bogen 1260, Scott O’Neill 1465, and Kevin Lachenmeier 1443, and the team of Luke Eilers 1650, Ross Benedict 1673, Charlie Holdman 1675, and Travis Carratt 1685, and the team of Adam Johnson 1788, Matt Walker 1789, Bryan Moran 1781, and Max Seandel 1816, each posting a score of -10 shooting 61. Matt Nehring 1624 (hole #3) and Jordan Todaro 1753 (hole #13) took home closest to pin honors, with Kevin 2

Lachenmeier (hole #7) and Blake Whittemore 1589 (hold #18) each earning accolades for long drives. “It is a great tournament, and Scott is doing a fantastic job of running and growing the event,” Lachenmeier said. “He should be commended for all his efforts.” KP and long drive winners each received a $25 OSU Bookstore gift card. In addition, Dickinson hopes to coordinate with the chapter to display the winner’s trophy in the house for visitors to observe. “At one point, we had the trophy stored in the chapter,” Dickinson said. “I think we would ideally like to do that again, as I think it is a great focal point for alumni visiting the chapter.” While the 2020 tournament was canceled due to COVID, this year’s tournament was a massive success, and Dickinson expects next year’s tournament to be in high demand as well. “The good news for us is that golf has some inherent social distancing built-in,” Dickinson said. “A year later, we saw that vaccinations were available and did our best to create social distancing. But, above all else, we tried to communicate that if individuals did not feel comfortable, they could certainly wait until next year.” Next year’s event is already scheduled for September 9, 2022, back at Langdon Farms. The 2021 event was a full field, so it is recommended that teams and individuals secure their spots once announcements go out in the spring. Should COVID circumstances change, non-golfers will be welcome and encouraged to join for post-tournament dinner and to see fellow Phis. For more information on next year’s tournament and to register, email Oregon.Beta.Alumni@gmail.com. “It is fun to see new alumni join for the tournament, and then they become ‘hooked’ on what we have built— which is more about seeing other alumni, and for many of us playing some bad golf and drinking—while catching up with friends we don’t see as often as we would like,” Dickinson said. All of Oregon Beta is rightfully thankful to Scott for putting on such a great annual event that brings so many Phis together. Congratulations are due to the winning team and individuals. UNDERGRADUATE SPOTLIGHT: continued from page 1 When Tesdall was a freshman looking to join a fraternity, he established criteria that only the right Greek society would fulfill. He wanted to make sure he joined a fraternity with philanthropic involvement and a quality reputation within the community. He has since become part of Be-the-Match. “When I heard that we raise money for ALS, I thought that was a genuinely good cause I wanted to be involved with,” Tesdall said. “Also, I wanted to feel like everyone in the house knew each other. If one day my little brothers decided to come to Oregon State, after meeting the guys here at Phi Delt, this is where I would want them to join.” Tesdall is the oldest of five children. His youngest brother, Corbin, is in seventh grade. His other brother, Austin, is a high school sophomore who could be following in his older brothers’ footsteps in a few years. So far, Tesdall’s experience at Oregon Beta has been worthwhile and altogether enjoyable. “My experience here at Phi Delt has been great all around,” Tesdall said. “I have met some really cool guys, and I know we will be friends for life. I love living in the house, and having our own gym has been a great addition to the house.” Tesdall is originally from Las Vegas, but his family moved to Oregon when he was in middle school. After graduating from Sherwood High School in 2019, he started college at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. He transferred to Oregon State University in the winter term of his freshman year and joined Phi Delta Theta during the spring term of his freshman year. “When I joined Phi Delt, I wanted to be in a leadership position to help the house, just how it helped me,” Tesdall said. “I have stepped up into leadership roles I feel are helping the house.” After college, Tesdall intends to work for a large corporation to get experience and eventually join his family’s business. His parents own a vacation rental company they started in 2008. The business has locations in Southern Utah at Brian Head and in Central Oregon near Sisters.

An interesting fact about Tesdall is that he had heart surgery when he was two years old to repair a hole in his heart. He enjoys working out, playing golf, and looks forward to future leadership opportunities at Oregon Beta.

PRESIDENT’S CORNER: continued from page 1 philanthropy, community service, and events with sororities. As president of the chapter, I have a lot of goals for us and plan on enforcing the importance of getting back involved with the Oregon State community. My goal is to win at least one sorority philanthropy this fall, and I would like every member to engage in at least twenty community service hours per term. We’ve been in contact with some great organizations in the past and already have plans to assist those at the homeless shelter and help set up Christmas decorations at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Both are things we haven’t been able to participate in for a while because of restrictions, but we are all excited about the new opportunities coming up. It has been a long time since we have held any sort of in-person events, so regarding activities in the house, we are happy to be getting back to traditions. This fall, we are back to having meals in the dining room, formal dinners every Monday, chapter meetings in the chapter room, and in-person social events with sororities. So, with the house finally getting back to normal, the only thing we still had to improve was our recruitment numbers. Because our numbers were down a bit due to COVID, our primary goal coming into this fall was excelling in recruitment. 4

The Oregon Beta Star » Fall 2021

With the help of our highly motivated recruitment chairs, recruitment this summer and fall couldn’t have gone any better. Our name was the buzz around campus, and our chapter added an extremely quality class of thirty-nine new Phikeias. This success boosted the morale of the chapter even more, as we are all extremely excited to get the Phikeias integrated into the house. Another goal for ours is to reach full live-in capacity by the end of the school year. Many of the thirty-nine guys have expressed interest in moving in soon, and six in the Phikeia class are currently live-in. We are very excited to see what the future holds for the house. This new quality class already has shown a passion for the house as incoming freshmen, and we couldn’t be happier to get them initiated at the end of the term. Morale is up, numbers are up, and Phi Delt is back. Adam Henderson 1927 Chapter President adam.hende11@gmail.com Oregon Beta

Ray attended primary school and graduated from Corvallis High School in 1956. He played baseball in high school and continued through college. He was the starting pitcher on the Oregon State University Baseball Team for three years. Ray was enlisted in ROTC and graduated Oregon State University with a business degree in 1960. Ray was a 1st Lieutenant and played on the US Army baseball team at Fort Dix, New Jersey, and was honored to be selected as 1st Lieutenant of the year.
