CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS Estimates have been given for all lots in this auction. They are meant to reflect our idea of the current market value of the item given its scarcity and condition. Lots may sell for more or less than the estimates as the bidding dictates. Postal Bid Forms should be sent or faxed to be received by our office before 6 PM prior to the day of the auction. For evening auctions no later than 12 noon on auction day. Extension on lots should be noted on bid forms. All lots will be sold to the highest bidder. A 15% Buyer's Premium will be added to the hammer price, on all lots. The buyer agrees to pay all shipping and handling costs. It is solely the buyer's responsibility to notify Phila China Limited of any special shipping instructions. In the case of tie bids or any other disputes arising, the auctioneer's decision will be final. The auctioneer retains the right to act as seller's agent in placing a protective reserve on any lot. All invoices are payable in Hong Kong dollars. Payment in any other currencies will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made, with such payment to include all additional bank charges. All foreign currency personal checks and Eurocheques will not be accepted. A standard HK$250 shipping/handling fee per shipment of purchase will be charged, there will be additional charges for carton lot shipments. Overseas buyers must furnish their own insurance during shipment. All invoices are due and payable upon presentation. Full payment for all purchases should be made at the time of collection of lots. Title shall not pass to the buyer until full payment of the invoice total has been received. For invoices that are more than 30 days overdue, a late fee of 5% and interest at the rate of 2% per month from the day of the auction will be added. Floor bidders requesting extensions should do so at the time of bidding. All floor bidders will not be granted any return privileges. It is presumed that all floor bidders have inspected the lots prior to bidding. Therefore, lots purchased by floor bidders are sold "AS IS" and may not be returned. Due to possible mishandling of items by subsequent owners, the Auctioneer reserves the right to describe items differently than shown on certificates from any certification service that accompany the items. Describing and grading are an art, not a science, and therefore the descriptions provided in this catalog may not agree with the opinion of others (including trained experts), and the same expert may not describe and grade the same stamp with the same description and grade at two different times. This service is complimentary and with strict confidence. Phila China Limited offers this value-added service as a convenience to our clients who are unable to attend the auction, however, Phila China Limited will not be held responsible for error, omission or failure to execute bids.

To place bids, please use the absentee bid form provided in the catalog. Be sure to accurately record the lot number(s) and the top price you are willing to pay for each lot. "Buy" bids will not be accepted. Always indicate a "top limit" - the amount to which you would bid if you were attending the auction yourself.

1 Collection of Bisected Bilingual Daters, comprising 120 covers/postal stationery cards/picture post cards supplemented by used stamps, recording a wide range of bisected bilingual cds used during Chinese Imperial Post period plus an interesting study of varieties such as numerals replacing year digits in Hankow and Shanghai, a brief study of various postage rates applicable at that time, combination covers and mail routes, etc, with enough material to make up a five-frame exhibit, an excellent opportunity for the postal history enthusiasts, complete set of scans available upon request (120). 2 Min Hsin Chu (Private Letter Agencies) Collection, The "Jiang Yao Hua" correspondence of Min Hsin Chu covers around 1901 to late 1920's totaling 54 red band covers and 2 receipts, with a fantastic and diversified range of Min Hsin Chu cancellations in the provinces of Kiangsu, Chekiang and Anhwei with some items carried by more than two Min Hsin Chu's and several others where the sender and recipient paid separate postage marked on covers, complete copy of a 22-page article on this collection published in 2009 by Chinese Postmark Study Association (56). Jiang was an ordinary worker in a tea firm in Anhwei but later became a "tea runner" carrying out business of his own, using various agency addresses to keep his trade secrets, later he expanded and moved his business to its source, Shanghai. He was a loving father, had two sons and there are items to indicate that he remitted money via Min Hsin Chu and also sent shoes and books by similar channels. The Shanghai Local Post was founded on 13 July 1863, its postal agencies had been set up in the Chinese treaty ports of Amoy, Foochow, Chinkiang, Chungking, Ichang, Hankow, Kewkiang, Nanking, Wuhu, etc. These Local Postal Agencies issued stamps between January 1893 to September 1896. 1897 Red Revenue Surcharges In January 1896 (Guangxu 21st Year, 11th Month) Censor Chen Bi petitioned the Emperor to approve a project to raise revenues by the issuance of revenue stamps, thus the Red Revenue was designed, ordered and printed in England. Two engraver proofs of the 3 cents revenue stamp essay in black and in red, mounted on card, believed to be later modified designs by the engraver after the approval of the adopted design signed by Sir Robert Hart on March 26, 1896, with distinct similarities and minor differences, certainly one of the greatest discoveries of this elusive and much sought after early issue of Imperial China, a piece of puzzle fitting right in place between the renowned large size essay die proof and the small numbered 2223 die proof.
