Orchestral Pathways Program

A program of the

Every child should have the opportunity to benefit from the life-affirming and characterbuilding pursuit of the arts. Tune Up Philly-Orchestral Pathways Program is a transformative afterschool music education program developed and delivered by the Philadelphia Youth Orchestra Music Institute. It focuses on creating and inspiring community change throughout Philadelphia through the power of music. Across Philadelphia’s neighborhoods where resources and opportunities are limited, Tune Up Philly provides hundreds of students with immersive musical mentorship. Inspired by the international El Sistema movement, Tune Up Philly gives children in grades 2-12 invaluable opportunities to learn an orchestral instrument and perform a differentiated curriculum while developing skills that positively transform their lives. Living in Philadelphia—the poorest big city in America—requires grit and resilience. Through pursuit of musical excellence in Tune Up Philly, students develop these critical characteristics and find a place to shine. As students build confidence through their individual achievements, they learn the value of contributing their abilities to a larger musical community. Through Tune Up Philly, we are investing in the future leaders of our city and our world.

Impacting Arts Gaps Tune Up Philly provides music education in under-served areas of Philadelphia where access to arts opportunities is limited, including in North Philadelphia, West and Southwest Philadelphia, Allegheny West, Nicetown, and Kensington. In addressing these gaps in arts access through school and community partnerships, Tune Up Philly makes participation in music a reality for hundreds of students and families.

“Tune Up Philly affected me in a very positive, very motivating, very elevating way. It helped me grow as a person and influenced me in my life as a musician. They taught me to be confident in who I am and don’t let anybody limit your abilities.” — Christopher Michael Wise III, flute

Orchestrating Success 1 Intensive musical programming engages students for

3-6 hours per week in critical out-of-school time. 2 Students receive instruction and mentorship from

dedicated Teaching Artist faculty with average tenures of 5 years in a 10:1 student-to-teacher ratio. 3 Students develop character, fortitude, and confidence,

inspiring them to be positive role models for their peers and laying the foundation for future success. 4 Students receive opportunities to gain the skills needed

to succeed in the competitive high school application process and future life pathways. 5 Students connect across neighborhoods and communities

through TUP Connect, a large-scale orchestra comprised of Tune Up Philly studio classes. TUP Connect places the spotlight on Philly students in venues like Temple University’s Performing Arts Center and the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts, creating individual and community pride. 6 Advancing students receive support and connection to

audition-based music ensembles, whether within the PYO Music Institute or peer music organizations. Tune Up Philly provides one-on-one guidance for navigating the numerous financial and social resources offered throughout Philadelphia’s music education ecosystem.
