Trans woman stabbed to death, suspect arrested

MontCo opens new marriage debate By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com The Register of Wills in Montgomery County this week became the first in the state to issue a marriage license to a samesex couple. On Wednesday morning, D. Bruce Hanes issued marriage licenses to at least two lesbian couples. Pottstown residents Loreen Bloodgood and Alicia Terrizzi, together for 18 years, were the first to receive a license, followed by Sasha Esther Ballen and Diana Lynn Spagnuolo of Wynnewood.

The QFest audience honorable mention winner focused on Hoagland’s son, Mark Bingham, the openly gay rugby player who was among the passengers who sought to overtake Flight 93 from terrorists on 9/11. Hoagland participated in a Q&A after the documentary, telling audience members about everything from her son’s rugby injuries to her experience listening to the flight-data recorder from Flight 93.

A transgender woman was murdered and dismembered last week in the city’s Strawberry Mansion section. On July 20, police arrested and charged 43-year-old Charles Sargent with the murder, as well as possession of an instrument of crime and abuse of a corpse. Sargent allegedly stabbed and dismembered 31-year-old Diamond Williams of Philadelphia July 13.

According to police spokesperson Officer Tanya Little, police received a phone call July 17 about a possible crime scene on the 2100 block of North 32nd Street. “Upon arrival, officers located a crime scene inside the residence, a possible homicide,” Little said in an email. “However, a victim was not located inside the location. Through further investigation by Central Detectives, they were able to develop a suspect and ultimately a victim.” Police Public Affairs commanding officer Lt. John Stanford said PAGE 3

Hanes waived the three-day requirement for the nuptials to be performed for Bloodgood and Terrizzi, and the pair was joined in a North Wales ceremony Wednesday by the Rev. Craig Andrussier. Hanes told PGN the previous day that he had planned on issuing a marriage license to a different lesbian couple that day but that the couple backed out. When asked if he would issue a marriage license to other same-sex couples who applied, Hanes said: “The answer is yes.” “I only issue marriage licenses, I don’t marry people,” he added. Judge allows Liberty Place demonstrations By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com

A judge last week ruled that protestors who espouse antigay and anti-women views are permitted to demonstrate near a busy Center City property. Common Pleas Judge Ellen Ceisler ruled July 19 that it would be a free-speech violation to band the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge, which bills itself as a religious organization, from demonstrating outside Liberty Place at 16th and Chestnut streets. Liberty Place Retail Associates, L.P., filed a civil suit in May seeking to bar ISUPK from demonstrating on its property. A temporary injunction was PAGE 16

Minor-league baseball club to host LGBT night By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com Baseball has long been America’s favorite pastime and next month, the Reading Fightin’ Phils will invite the LGBT community to a free night of the longstanding tradition. The Fightin’ Phils will take on the Binghamton Mets for their first-ever LGBT Community Night Aug. 14. The minorleague team will give away 10,000 free tickets to those in the Reading, Allentown, Harrisburg and Philadelphia areas. Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the game starts at 7 p.m., and the first 2,000 adults to arrive will receive a Fightin’ Phils umbrella.

Fightin’ Phils assistant director of sales Anthony Pignetti said the team was motivated to launch the event after seeing the success of similar initiatives, such as the Phillies’ Gay Community Night. “The success that other organizations have had in Philly and throughout the country played a big part in our decision to host a night like this,” he said. “We never had an event like this but certainly wanted to pursue it.” Pignetti said that although regularly priced tickets to the Fightin’ Phils are affordable, the team wanted to provide a free night for LGBT and ally fans, and to promote tourism in Reading.

He said the team is pursuing sponsorships to support the free-ticket giveaway. The team will take sponsors up until the end of the month, with no set contribution amount for donations. Pignetti said he has worked with agencies such as Reading Pride, Equality Pennsylvania and Pennsylvania Diversity Network to get the word out about the event. And the Phils have already seen great feedback for the event, he said. “It has been a fantastic response. People want to know more about the event and about the team and we hope to get people to come out to Reading from Philly and Harrisburg,” he said.

He added that the team has recently gone through a rebranding and is eager to show the LGBT community and other visitors what it, and the area, has to offer. “We want to have as many people come to the ball park and see what we have to offer. Our games are fun with pre- and post-game music events on stage and food and drink specials. We want to be a year-round destination,” Pignetti said. “We welcome everyone to the ballpark — any type of organization, any community. Groups join together for black-tie fundraiser By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com Bebashi: Transition to Hope, along with new nonprofit Urban Angel Foundation, will host the first annual Halos for Hope event from 8 p.m.-midnight Aug. 3. Bebashi is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing culturally sensitive health information and services, as well as education, direct services, research and technical assistance aimed at reducing HIV/AIDS transmissions and other health disparities in the urban community. Urban Angel Foundation recruits hundreds of individuals to provide volunteer hours and pro-bono services to urban communities. The black-tie fundraising event, which will be held in The Pennsylvania Academy

of Fine Arts Samuel Hamilton Building, 128 N. Broad St., will include live entertainment from the Urban Guerilla Orchestra, a silent auction, VIP lounge, open bar and food from PAFA’s caterer, Jimmy Duffy. Proceeds from the event will benefit both Bebashi and Urban Angel Foundation. According to Bebashi director of development and communications Chanda Hurms, the event was created in part to get the message out about the services both agencies provide. “Even though Bebashi is 28 years old, and we are primarily known for our work with HIV/AIDS, we also do a variety of other services, which fly under the radar and are not as well known,” she said. “Urban Angel Foundation is a volunteer-focused organization and they are new. Even though

they have a large social network of 7,000 volunteers, they are not widely known in the nonprofit sector in the city. This is an opportunity for us to work together to gain greater exposure for both organizations.” UAF executive director William Cobb said his agency will use the money raised for a new recruitment project. “UAF will launch our Urban Angel 365 project, where we will be able to recruit and disperse all of our volunteers,” he said. “Our goal is to recruit people and provide 50,000 volunteer hours.” Hurms said Bebashi intends to make Halos for Hope an annual event with a website that will work both as an ongoing project to raise money and to educate individuals about the work of both organizations.

“We have an event website that we have built and it will be an ongoing website and we will continuously update information for Halos for Hope in anticipation for the next event. It will be an ongoing fundraiser,” she said. Cobb said the event is sure to be a great time for guests who want a fun night out that also helps Philadelphians in need. “It is a black-tie fundraiser that will be a great party with live entertainment and hosted in a wonderful venue where guests can view art as well,” he said. “And at the same time, you are supporting two nonprofits by doing so. threatened her and her children if she contacted police about the body. After a resident of the home contacted police later in the week, Sargent confessed to murdering Williams and led them to her remains in an empty lot between York and Sedgley streets, about a mile from the house. Sargent is currently being held at Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility and will face a preliminary hearing Aug. 7. Sargent is no stranger to crime, having a record dating back to 1989.

Morrison said Williams will be remembered as a positive individual who was easily able to cheer friends. “She always had a joy and light about her and was somebody that was willing to make you laugh and smile,” Morrison said. “If I was feeling down, all she had to do was say a kind word or compliment my shirt or shoes to make it better. She didn’t realize how that changed my whole heart and day. She was an awesome person who liked to have fun and enjoyed life to the best

she could.” Morrison said Williams’ personal struggles didn’t impact that attitude. “She was dealing with things from her past and dealing with a few battles and as she got older, she was out on the streets. But the family she found in the community was important for her. She was battling with drugs and living on the streets, but she never lost that light, confidence and flair.” Williams had aspirations of returning to school to become a nurse. “It was pretty obvious in her life that she resorted and depended on [sex work] to survive,” Morrison said. “She didn’t have a lot of family and support. It just didn’t work out the way it was supposed to. She had a lot of dreams. She always wanted to help people and make sure people were safe. She wanted to use her energy to give back and add to the light of the community as opposed to closing herself away.” Various media outlets reported that the attack was prompted when Sargent learned Williams was transgender. Morrison, however, said Williams was always open about her identity, and surmised Sargent was attempting to utilize a trans-panic defense. “I found it hard to believe that this man, who has traditionally dealt with the girls often, would lean towards the trans-panic scapegoat as he has solicited and dated many of the girls who are part of the circuit,” Morrison said, noting TIP clients have told her they recognized his mugshot photo. “For him to do something horrific to a wonderful young lady, nobody deserves that.” Williams’ murder comes on the heels of a number of unsolved murders of transgender women in recent years, including Stacey Blahnik and Kyra Cordova. Bethel said there does not appear to be a connection between Williams’ murder and the other incidents. “At this point, there is no indication that this is linked,” Bethel said. “There is no indication that this is beyond an incident revolving around the victim and the suspect.” Morrison encouraged women in the sex-work industry to remain both vigilant and unified. “You can only defend yourself so much in this life; it is not a safe life to live or safe profession to have. It is important to really look out for each other. And there are services in the city that are helpful. We are offering ourselves as refuge to anyone who needs to talk. If they do feel unsafe, they should come to us. the victim and suspect had an argument before Sargent allegedly stabbed Williams, but declined to identify the nature of the argument. “They were known to each other,” Stanford said. “This was a not random incident. There was some type of interaction or encounter. It appears there may have been a struggle and the deceased was stabbed.” Media outlets have reported that Williams, who worked as a sex worker, was sexually involved with the suspect and that he met her in Hunting Park and the two returned to his house. “Though it is being reported in other news outlets and within the community, I am unable to officially confirm her lifestyle,” said Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel, the police LGBT liaison. Stanford said the case is not being investigated as a hate crime. “There isn’t any evidence at this time that would be consistent or support that criteria for [a crime motivated by a victim’s gender identity],” he said. “Investigators don’t have any information to support a motivation being based on the victim’s [gender identity].” Police say Sargent’s girlfriend arrived at their home unexpectedly July 14. The suspect was naked and the woman saw him carrying what appeared to be a body in a sheet, and later an ax, to the basement. The woman told police Sargent

N.J., national orgs. launch marriage campaign By Angela Thomas angela@epgn.com The fight for marriage equality in New Jersey is continuing with a new campaign that includes national support. New Jersey United for Marriage launched July 24 at a press conference in Asbury Park. Garden State Equality and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey created the campaign to further efforts to make marriage equality a reality in the Garden State, along with national partners the American Unity Fund, Freedom to Marry, Gill Action and the Human Rights Campaign. Marriage-equality supporters from all over the state began gathering at the Asbury Park boardwalk Wednesday morning with signs that read “Standing up for families.” GSE executive director Troy Stevenson told the crowd marriage equality would be the law of the land soon. “We will win marriage in New Jersey this year,” Stevenson said. ACLU of New Jersey executive director Udi Ofer said the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a key provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act in late June will help pave the way for marriage equality in New Jersey. “When SCOTUS struck down DOMA, New Jersey became the epicenter of the battle for marriage equality nationwide,” Ofer said. “Couples in states across the Eastern seaboard are eligible for federal benefits. New Jersey couples are not. We are changing that.” The push has support from local business owners, such as restaurant owner Jim Watt, who spoke at the conference.

“Our local businesses will benefit from this,” Watt said. “There are tremendous opportunities that are lost for Asbury Park businesses without marriage equality.” The awareness-raising efforts of NJ United for Marriage will focus both on the legislation and litigation surrounding marriage equality in New Jersey. Last year, Republican Gov. Chris Christie vetoed a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage. Christie stated that although he personally believes that marriage is between one man and one woman, the decision should be left to the voters of New Jersey. According to a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute survey released earlier this month, about 60 percent of New Jersey voters support marriage equality. Judge reactivates lesbian benefits case By Timothy Cwiek timothy@epgn.com U.S. District Judge C. Darnell Jones 2d has reactivated the case of a lesbian widow who’s seeking the death benefits of her deceased wife. The matter was held in abeyance for about 10 months, while the Supreme Court considered whether Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act was unconstitutional. On June 26, the high court struck down Section 3, and on July 15, Jones reactivated the case. In 2006, Jennifer Tobits married Sarah Ellyn Farley in Canada. The women resided in Illinois, where Farley was employed as an attorney for the law firm of Cozen O’Connor, which is headquartered in Philadelphia, until her death in 2010. Tobits is seeking about $41,000 in death benefits from Cozen, as Farley’s surviving spouse. In 2011, Cozen filed a court action, asking a federal judge to decide whether Tobits or Farley’s parents should get the money. Cozen cited Pennsylvania’s DOMA as a reason to not recognize the women’s marriage, in addition to Section 3 of the federal DOMA. B u t a d v o c a t e s f o r To b i t s s a y Pennsylvania’s DOMA isn’t relevant to the case. “I don’t see any basis for Pennsylvania law affecting a marriage entered into outside Pennsylvania by a couple who never resided in Pennsylvania,” said Susan K. Hoffman, an employee-benefits attorney. Last month, 23 plaintiffs across Pennsylvania — including 10 same-sex couples, two of the couple’s teens and one widow — filed a constitutional challenge to Pennsylvania’s DOMA.

That case is pending before a federal judge in the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Hoffman said it’s unnecessary for Jones to wait until that case is completed, prior to ruling on the Tobits matter. “I would love it if Judge Jones says that Pennsylvania’s DOMA doesn’t apply, because, in my view, it clearly has no relevance as to whether Ms. Tobits gets the money,” Hoffman said. She said the Farley-Tobits marriage was recognized in Illinois, and Pennsylvania law cannot negate that recognition. “You can’t apply Pennsylvania marriage law to people who lived in Illinois,” she said. Cozen can legally interpret its benefits plan in a manner that recognizes same-sex spouses, Hoffman added. “Cozen’s plan administrator can now go back and apply the right law.” She predicted that more legal pleadings will be filed by the parties before Jones issues a ruling. Cozen CEO Michael J. Heller had no comment on whether Cozen still views Pennsylvania’s DOMA as relevant to the case. Christopher F. Stoll, an attorney for Tobits, expressed optimism about the case. “We hope that the court will move expeditiously to resolve this case, and will award Jennifer the benefits that she’s entitled to under the plan,” Stoll said. If Jones rules against Tobits, she could appeal to a higher court, or pursue a counterclaim against Cozen for breach of fiduciary duty, Stoll said. “If it turns out that the plan does prevent this benefit from being paid to a same-sex spouse, then Cozen has breached its fiduciary duty to its plan participants because it didn’t advise them of that fact,” Stoll explained. ■

To bolster our efforts at addressing some of these disparities, last year we applied for and received a major grant from AIDS United. With the help of these funds, we were able to establish the Trans* Wellness Program. Our goal with the program is to take a holistic and multifaceted approach to meet the self-identified needs of the community. We’ve developed several specific initiatives already, including the T.R.U.E. Care Clinic, which stands for Trans Resources, Unity and Education. This drop-in program is held the first and third Fridays of each month at the Washington West Project, 1201 Locust St. The T.R.U.E. Care Clinic provides free, comprehensive health and support services including primary medical care, trans-specific medical care, HIV medical care, rapid HIV testing and STD screening, risk-reduction counseling, substance abuse/ mental-health assessment and referral, health education, eligibility screening and application

for public benefits. These services are offered free of charge on a walk-in basis, with no insurance required. Our goal is to ensure that the T.R.U.E. Care Clinic provides comprehensive services for all trans people and other LGBT members who lack access to care. The T.R.U.E. Care Clinic was developed from the recommendations of our new Community Advisory Board, comprised of a diverse group of transgender women, and from partner organizations like the Trans-health Information Project, with facilitation from drop-in center staff. We call ourselves the Sisterly L.O.V.E. Project (Leading Others Via Education), and we support the T.R.U.E. Care Clinic and other Mazzoni programs in providing an affirming and inclusive environment, while increasing awareness and education to the larger Philadelphia community. Among the other goals of the project are to offer leadership development, training, resources and educational opportunities to women involved in Sisterly L.O.V.E., to build on the existing strengths of Philadelphia’s community of trans women and girls.

Mazzoni is also offering programs to foster a sense of community and create opportunities for harm-reduction and empowerment among trans women and girls. These innovative, engaging workshops are developed by trans women, for trans women. They will provide an opportunity for peer-to-peer support and skill sharing, as well as educational programming facilitated by Mazzoni staff and partners. Our first workshop, “Getting the Love We Deserve: Trans Women and Relationships,” was a huge success, and we look forward to presenting a new one approximately once a month. In August, we will address job preparedness and interviewing, as well as the legalities of being a trans* employee in the Philadelphia area. Windsor, which ended Section 3 of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, gay and lesbian immigrants can apply for green cards through their U.S. citizen or green-card-holding spouses. Here are the answers to some common questions regarding the immigration process. Q: Can my spouse apply for a green card if we live in a state that does not recognize same-sex marriage? A: Yes, as long as the state in which you married recognizes same-sex marriage, and the Board of Immigration Appeals just confirmed this in a case called Matter of Zeleniak, which has been posted on the Department of Justice’s website.

Q: How does a couple prove that their marriage is bona fide?

A: We hope that Immigration Service officials will not hold same-sex marriages to a higher standard and require more evidence than they would of a heterosexual couple. However, in our experience, couples without children are expected to present more evidence than those with children. Therefore, same-sex couples who have not adopted children together should prepare for more

The spouse of a U.S. citizen may obtain a green card even if he or she has “overstayed” the nonimmigrant visa beyond its expiration date and is now out of status. However, the spouse of a green-card holder will not be able to obtain a green card until his or her spouse becomes a U.S. citizen. Your spouse will also be ineligible for a green card if he or she gained entry to the United States by using a fraudulent document or lying on a nonimmigrant visa application. There are many other factors that can cause an immigrant to be ineligible for a green card, such as criminal history, as well as legal exceptions to those factors. For example, some immigrants who committed immigration fraud or certain crimes remain eligible to apply for a green card if they are able to prove extreme hardship to their U.S. citizen spouse in the event they are deported.

Q: How does this process work if my spouse is outside of the United States? A: You must still file an immigrant visa petition in the United States, but once the petition is approved, it will be sent to the Department of State’s National Visa Center for “consular processing.” Your spouse will attend an interview at the U.S. Consulate in the country where he or she resides, but you will not be required to attend the interview as you would if your spouse was in the country. This process takes roughly nine

Another victim Last year, it was Kyra Cordova. Two years before that, it was Stacey Blahnik. In 2002, it was Nizah Morris. This year, it’s Diamond Williams. All transgender women of color, all murdered in Philadelphia. And these are the ones we know about. What about all of the nameless women whose lives were cut short by violence, discrimination, poverty or the fatal mixture of all three? Why is it that their lives are not seen as being as valuable as that of any other Philadelphian? Where can they be safe? And when will it no longer be acceptable that their simple identity puts them at risk? Some of those questions were explored at a demonstration Tuesday night in Center City. Community leaders and members, representing all facets of the LGBT and ally population, participated in a somber gathering to remember Williams, brutally murdered earlier this month in Strawberry Mansion by a man with whom she was allegedly sexually engaged. Williams, a North Philadelphia native, was remembered for her spirit, energy and passion, especially for music and her friends. The event was tinged with a sense of anger — at the circumstances that led Williams to her killer’s house, at accused murderer Charles Sargent’s brutal disregard for her life and at the boundless, unanswered questions revolving around violence and transgender women. One other thing that did emerge from the demonstration was a sense of unity and solidarity. The event brought together transgender women and men, LGB people, teens, seniors, black people, white people, allies and everyone in between. Many of these people had not lived the transgender experience, or the person-of-color experience, but those barriers did not seem evident Tuesday evening. All in attendance were there to support Williams, as well as the victims who came before her, to prevent victims from coming after her. That commitment is something that needs to be continued indefinitely, and not as reactive but proactive. The questions that abound about how to stem violence against transgender women need to be confronted through a tangible search for answers. And that effort takes the investment of the entire community. Just as there was a directed response from all corners of the community to the spate of LGBT youth suicides a few years back — which took the form of direct outreach to the youth themselves as well as marked action on underlying issues that could factor into the epidemic, such as youth conversion therapy or religious-based bigotry — this systemic issue requires a purposeful response. The LGBT and ally community needs to make protecting its trans members a priority, exploring the tough questions again and again — until being a transgender woman of color is not a risk factor for murder. ■

Oh, Pat Robertson. He really is trying too hard to present himself as the epitome of angry and dogmatic old man determined to go to his grave on the wrong side of history. It’s almost sad, until, of course, he opens his mouth again to say something about gay people. Like on a recent episode of “The 700 Club,” where he answered a viewer’s question about, er, Facebook etiquette. Because when looking for answers about social media, who doesn’t seek out the wizened input of an 83-year-old? After all, Robertson’s Tumblr is wicked dope. Judging from the viewer’s question, however, it doesn’t seem like he or she is exactly social-media savvy, either. A viewer identified as TYZA asks, “When we ‘like’ things on Facebook, if it’s something that goes against what is written in the Bible — such as pictures of same-sex couples — is that considered condoning the behavior?” Seriously, TYZA? You get to have your question about Facebook read on air and that’s what you hit us with? Why not just ask, “If you ‘poke’ someone on Facebook and then find out they’re gay, does that make you gay, too?” Actually, I’d love to see Robertson tackle that one. Because it’s clear from his response to TYZA that he’s not exactly a Facebook expert. “I’m not someone who switches on ‘likes’ in Facebook so it’s hard to say,” he begins with limited coherence, “but what you’re saying is, ‘Yes, I like this kind of thing.’ You’ve got a couple of same-sex guys kissing, you like that. Well, that makes me want to throw up. To me I would punch ‘vomit,’ not ‘like,’” he says, cracking himself up. “But they don’t give you that option on Facebook. But anyhow, are you condoning it? Yes, you’re condoning it.” So much for “like” the sinner, hate the sin. And there you have it. Robertson understands how Facebook’s “like” feature works, even if he does not understand basic human decency. If you’re gay, you make him want to puke. And punch his computer, apparently. I’d hate to be his IT person. This whole “pansies make Pat puke” thing is no doubt difficult for his legions of gay fans. You heard that right. Shortly after Pat’s pukey comments, he claimed that he wasn’t antigay and that homos DVR “The 700 Club” right alongside “RuPaul’s Drag Race” and “Modern Family.”

“I am very pleased that we have many, many, many, uh, homosexuals watching this program and many of them are looking for love and acceptance and help,” Robertson said. “And I just think we’re not antigay or anti-anything. I just do believe in the Bible.” Granted, he had just said that gays make him puke, but let’s put that into perspective. Just because someone makes you feel like you’re going to lose your lunch doesn’t mean you refuse to help them. Just ask any doctor or nurse who deals with real gross people as opposed to Robertson’s fairytale gross gays. After claiming that “a lot” of people turn gay after being sexually abused, Robertson muses, “and they’re little boys and little girls and they don’t know any better and then they somehow think, ‘Well, I must be gay.’ Well, they aren’t, they are heterosexual and they just need to come out of that. There are some others, maybe they’ve got some chromosomal damage that’s different from heterosexuals, and that’s what, of course, they claim, and then the homosexual movement they say that, ‘Hey, you can’t come out of this under any circumstances.’” Got that? Gays need to come out of the closet. Again. As straight. And the only reason more of them don’t is because the “homosexual movement” bullies them. Almost makes you want to puke, doesn’t it? ■

Letters and Feedback To the Editor: Mark Segal’s recent columns have brought together the history of the fight against intolerance and this year’s acknowledgement of acceptance by the U.S. Supreme Court, among others. The maturity of his words reveals his collection of experiences and memorabilia and his transition of now passing those things to the next generation. This spring, I was part of the Penn State Men’s Gymnastics reunion and celebration of the 100th birthday of my coach Gene Wettstone, the father of American gymnastics and who reincarnated the Penn State Nittany Lion. I thought the prize of my collection was a wooden trunk lined with photos, programs and newspaper articles. It wasn’t. The prize was a series of newspaper articles about the fight between the old AAU, which controlled American athletics with myths and prejudices and the group of men and women [Wettstone] selected over the years who together acted to do what was right for everyone to participate. The ignition event was Penn State’s invitation to the University of Cologne for a gymnastics meet. After litigation, which was finally resolved by Congress, the United States Gymnastics Federation assumed responsibility and led the development of gymnastics with teams captained by open gay gymnasts (Temple 2013) and gay Olympians. Years later, the University of Cologne hosted the 2010

Gay Games,where Team Philadelphia competed. The circle was nearly complete. The final thing I found was a letter from Coach Wettstone in which he was describing the last gymnastics event he would organize, named “The Best Years of Our Lives.” In the last paragraph, he ended by saying he was proud of us as student athletes, but that he was more proud of us for what we accomplished in our adult lives. As Team Philadelphia and its affiliated sports and music organizations, with more than 1,300 individuals comprising the largest adult sports and musical organization in the region, prepare for 2014 with Gay Games in Cleveland, the Bingham Rugby Cup in Australia and the National Flag Football Championships in Philadelphia, and many other local and national events, we extend our thanks to those many individuals who stepped forward to organize protests and sporting organizations that are now celebrating decades of existence. We hope to acknowledge those leaders with a sports historical retrospective in 2014 expressing our appreciation for doing what was right and bringing us all to the open fields of play, where we are acknowledged for our efforts and accomplishments. is the third-largest county in the state. Pennsylvania currently has a statute on the books defining marriage as between one man and one woman. Hanes said omeone wishing to challenge his issuance would have to bring the case to a judge, who would then be tasked with deciding whether to issue an injunction barring Hanes from issuing any further licenses to same-sex couples. The defense of his decision would be taken up by his office’s attorneys, he said. Hanes, a Democrat who took office in 2008, said the couple contacted his office last week informing him of their intent to apply for the license. He said he conferred with solicitor Michael Clarke and county solicitor Ray McGarry on the issue, taking into account last month’s Supreme Court decision striking down as unconstitutional the key provision of the federal Defense of Marriage Act that defined marriage as between one man and one woman. Also in the discussion was Attorney General Kathleen Kane’s decision to not defend the state’s ban on same-sex marriage against a recent lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. Kane said the law was “wholly unconstitutional.” “I considered just about everybody,” Hanes said. In his own legal analysis, Hanes said he examined Article I, Section 1 of the state constitution regarding “inherent rights of mankind,” which include citizens’ rights to “pursuing their own happiness.” He also referred to Section 26, which mandates that the state nor any political subdivision may “deny to any person the enjoyment of any civil right, nor discriminate against any person in the exercise of any civil right,” as well as Section 28, which bars sex discrimination. Hanes said he ultimately decided to “come down on the right side of history and the law.” “I thought about this and it’s the right thing for me to do and the right thing that needs to be done,” Hanes said, noting that it’s up to other registers of wills to give the issue the same consideration. “What anybody else does in any other county should be based upon their own views.” Hanes’ move was hailed by Montgomery County Commisioners Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards. Shapiro said “equality took a step forward in Montgomery County” with the decision. Richards concurred, saying Hanes showed “excellent judgment and courage.” Equality Pennsylvania executive director Ted Martin said Hanes’ leadership is commendable, but was unsure of the ramifications of his action. “It’s terrific whenever an elected official comes out publicly for marriage equality. This is a statement,” Martin said. “Equality PA is continuing to educate legislators and support the ACLU lawsuit, which we feel are the best ways to move this forward. Every action does have a reaction, and I’m just not sure what that will be here.” ■

That meant I had a lot of support.” That’s a bit of a slam against male parents; I leave readers to decide if it’s justified. The book focuses more, though, on the experiences that transcend sexual orientation and bind us together as moms. It has the potential to build a lot of bridges by highlighting our many commonalities. The book is clearly aimed at biological mothers who had traditional hospital births, however, regardless of orientation. Dads and non-biological mothers may want to read it to find out what their co-parent is going through, but will not feel like they are the primary audience. Adoptive parents, even those with infants, may also want to skip the sections on post-baby body, post-partum depression and breastfeeding — although they may find the parts about lack of sleep, time, money and space still relevant. Dais’ humor, while for the most part coffee-out-the-nose funny, occasionally wanders into touchy territory. For example, she writes, “Dear scientists of the world, let’s skip over all that silly cancer research and get on figuring out how to store up sleep!” Sleep storage sounds lovely, but calling cancer research “silly,” even in jest, might not sit well with readers who have lost loved ones to the disease. Despite those caveats, “The SH!T No One Tells You” is a hysterical, LGBT-inclusive guide for biological moms (and their partners) who are realizing their new bundle didn’t come with an instruction manual. A sneak peek at the senior center By Jen Colletta jen@epgn.com PGN got an exclusive hardhat tour this week of the LGBTfriendly senior residences, expected to open early next year. The steel frame of the John C. Anderson Apartments, at 249257 S. 13th St., is completed, and the brick exterior is largely laid on Camac Street and the alley that borders the southern wall of the facility. The brick is expected to be completed by the end of

On the ground floor, residents and visitors will enter the building into a large lobby area and, to the left, there will be 1,700 square feet of commercial space, which has not yet been rented. On the southeastern side of the first floor, beams are in place to support a wall of windows that looks out onto the 5,000-square-

foot courtyard, across from which will be a glass-enclosed community room. That space will be available for use by community organizations. “We really want to make this community-oriented,” said Mark Segal, PGN publisher and president of the Dr. Magnus Hirschfield Fund, which spearheaded the project with Pennrose Properties. the month, and workers will then turn their attention to the rest of the façade over the next few months. Interiorly, nearly all drywall in hallways and apartments are installed and most floors finished, except for some areas of the top floor. Heating and air-conditioning units have been installed, as have most windows. The building will be home to 56 one-bedroom affordable apartments for seniors. The units are laid out slightly different, depending on position on the floor, but each floor is designed the same. Each level will be painted a different color. granted, which has now been lifted. Demonstrators are still prevented from using the private sidewalk space that Liberty Place rents, but Ceisler said they cannot be prohibited from using the public space for their rallies. According to the lawsuit, during their demonstrations, ISUPK members have made such comments as: “The white man is the devil and there is no getting along with him,” “A woman need to shut her damn mouth” and “A faggot doing what he’s doing to another faggot is not marriage according to the Bible.” Liberty Place’s attorney, Jason P. Gosselin of Drinker Biddle & Reath, said he was disappointed in the ruling. Even if ISUPK does not demonstrate on the private property, he said they do draw in crowds who trespass on the property. “I am disappointed because this is a trespass case and the First Amendment is not a defense to trespass. What we have here are demonstrations that are different than walking a picket line. A picket line is conformed into a certain space. [ISUPK members] set up a stage, have amplified sound and attract a crowd. That crowd stands on private property and Liberty Place does not wish to provide audience space for a demonstration of this kind.” ISUPK demonstrated on the corner three successive Fridays in May, prompting the lawsuit. The property where crowds gather is often rented out to various organizations by Liberty Place for fundraisers and other uses. According to the lawsuit, about 15,000 individuals use the entrance where the demonstrations take place. Gosselin said his clients believe ISUPK has had a detrimental impact on Liberty Place business. “We believe they definitely cause a slowdown in foot traffic but we have no hard numbers. There are not enough demonstrations yet to determine the impact and during the trial, we did not offer data to show the amount of lost sales,” he said. General Mayakaala Ka of ISUPK said in a statement to PGN that he was pleased with the ruling. “We, at the Israelite School of Universal Practical Knowledge, believe that the judge’s decision was wise and just and would like to thank her for her fairness in our case,” he said. “We would also like to thank our attorneys who guided us in this matter.” Gosselin said further action will depend on the judge’s written decision. “We are currently waiting to get a ruling from the judge. When we get that, the client will decide what further steps they will take.” ■

Thinking Outside the Sandbox Art is at the heart of rethinking the Parkway

irst, a skateboard park a stone’s throw from the Art Museum. Then, paid parking meters lining the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Now, a big sandbox on Eakin’s Oval. The efforts to rethink the Parkway seem a bit haphazard. Worse, they seem misguided. It seems that the parks and recreation department, and those leading the city’s outsourced city planners known as PennPraxis, missed the Barnes memo. Here’s a refresher from the Barnes Foundation website’s homepage: “The Philadelphia campus sits on a beautifully landscaped, 4.5-acre site on the north side of Benjamin Franklin Parkway in the heart of downtown’s cultural corridor.” The key phrase is “cultural corridor,” which encompasses three world-class art institutions: the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Rodin Museum and the Barnes Foundation. Any rethinking must begin and end with these institutions. Each has sucked up millions of dollars in public and private foundation money all in the name of bringing tourists from around the world to our fair city. Rethinking the Parkway experience must begin and end with the view that this road is the conduit that moves visitors from one art experience to another. Yet this appears to be the last thing on the minds of those doing the rethinking. We at Liberty City Press have nothing against skateboarders. We supported removing them from Love Park, not because we think there is no place for a skateboarding park in Philadelphia’s central district, but because we felt that Love Park was the wrong place. But building a skateboard park on some of the most prime real estate at the footsteps of the Art Museum is equally misplaced. The last thing that area—which brings thousands of cars daily from Martin Luther King Drive to the Parkway and the Vine Expressway �� the cultural corridor, but it is hard to argue that visitors to the museums will place a skateboard park on their itinerary of things to do on the Parkway. Which brings us to paid parking meters on the Parkway. Who thought that was a good idea? We are pretty sure it wasn’t PennPraxis. Earlier this year the group released its plan for the Parkway, entitled “More ��

the Penn Current, “Removing the cars doesn’t cost anything other than losing parking fees. And Mayor Nutter is committed to this plan.” Huh? Mayor Nutter accepts the removal of parking spaces that his administration introduced less than a year ago? While one can argue that these spaces encourage visitors to go to the cultural corridor, the trade-off of more congested lanes for the relatively small

number of visitors these spaces accommodate is simply not worth it. Then there is the beachblanket-boardwalk concept that will take over the Parkway from July 17 through August 18, complete with sandboxes, lifeguard chairs, oversize chess boards and checkerboards, ping-pong, Twister, and sidewalk chalk. Adams’s dad got to see his son play for the first time. Adams’s rendezvous with his famous Philadelphia father couldn’t have gone better. “It was all pretty cool,” Adams said. “When I met him, it was like we have been hanging out my whole life. We got along great. We talked about a lot of things and he helped me with basketball. I was really happy he finally got to see me play basketball. This was the first time.” Adams’s parents have been apart for most of Adams’s life and his mother kept him with her. Adams said now he expects that his dad will be back in his life for good. “I sure plan that to be the case,” he said. “There are and were no bad feelings. I really want him in my life.” Adams said that he has no favorite schools recruiting him and would not rule out any of the Philly-area schools as his college destination.

They have omitted the name of Philadelphia’s greatest painter, Thomas Eakins, from the oval named in his honor, dubbing their version simply “the Oval.” Losing Eakins from the Oval is a metaphor for a city that doesn’t understand its Parkway. “I’m open to anything,” he said. “This was my first trip to Philadelphia, and I was nervous. But I really like it here. My dad showed me tapes of him as a player. He was a great, great player. On the court, we are different because I am a power forward and he was a swingman and a scorer. I hope he can give me tips to help me get further in this game.” One thing Adams is hoping to accomplish is being a good citizen. While Lloyd was wildly popular as a player in high school, college and the NBA, his wild nightlife persona caught up with him. Lloyd was banned from the NBA for drug use on more than one occasion. He was out of the league for two and a half years before ending his career with the Philadelphia 76ers. Adams wouldn’t comment on what his dad’s past problems meant to him but he did say he was a good student who hoped to be as well known for being a good person as a good player. “One thing I see in Philadelphia is how well liked my dad is and that means a lot to me,” he said. “I try to be humble and want to set a good example for younger kids in Arizona.”

Singer-songwriters join forces for folk group By Larry Nichols larry@epgn.com The Jammin’ Divas, a group of acclaimed international singer-songwriters and rock musicians, are coming to town to entertain their fans with their lush brand of folk music Aug. 1 at the Sellersville Theater. The Jammin’ Divas are comprised of Aoife Clancy, a native of Ireland and a Grammy nominee with the group Cherish the Ladies; Becky Chace from the United States; Kath Buckell from Australia; Hadar Noiberg, a flutist from Israel; and Craig Akin from the United States on bass. Out singer-songwriter Buckell said the

seed for what would become the Jammin’ Divas was planted when she met Clancy while the two were performing in Israel eight years ago. “We had this instant connection,” Buckell said. “We had this after-party where Aoife got together with other musicians and had a jam session. We just hit it off from the beginning. She said, ‘If you ever come to America, call me up.’ We kept in touch, and four years later after I left Israel, I called her and came to the United States. We did a show together and then we met Becky Chace and we had the opportunity for the three of us to perform together.” The other pieces to the Jammin’ Divas

puzzle fell into place when Buckell had to make something happen when a band she was supposed to open for couldn’t make it to the show. “There was a band that was supposed to be performing and I was supposed to open for them and that fell through because of their visas. The promoter asked us if we could do something together. Basically two hours before, we got together and went through some material and we just hit it off. The show was a success and we thought we should do it again. We brought in Hadar Noiberg to perform with us and arrange the music into an interesting format.” Buckell said the combined talents of the

Divas draw upon the music and traditions of their native countries, exploring the similarities and differences in folk styles. “We took music from each of our cultures and brought it together through harmonies and improvisation,” Buckell said. “We infused all of the rich traditions of folk music and brought them together to our own understanding of how each of these cultures influences one another, particularly how the Irish music influences Australian and American folk music from the early colonial times to when the first immigrants came to Australia. A lot of them were Irish and they brought with them the melodies from their culture, PAGE 20

the English and the Irish. When Australia started establishing their penal colonies, they adapted the poetry and whatever they saw at the time, which was a different landscape and different kind of life. They used that poetry and adapted it to the Irish melody. So we bring together the traditions of that rich culture into the show.” Buckell added the songs they perform grew from their interpretation of traditional songs to original pieces driven by their various influences. “Initially we brought together some traditional music,” Buckell said. “With Aoife, she was growing up with a lot of traditional Irish music, so we integrated a few of those pieces. That was what she was most familiar with. There were some singer-songwriters in Ireland that she had known that wrote beautiful pieces of music that were more contemporary. We also contemporize traditional music as well. We don’t play it in a traditional format. We wanted to use that sound and make it new and fresh. With the Australian selections, I put original music to some traditional poems that dated back to the 1800s.” Since all of the members have their own careers and projects outside of the group, finding time to focus on The Jammin’ Divas was an issue for all at first. But as their popularity grew, they found the process easier. “In the beginning, it took at least six months to arrange the music and we were performing once a month to bring that material together,” Buckell said. “We live three hours away from each other and as we started to get more shows happening, we were able to integrate rehearsals into

our schedule before tour periods. It was a challenge in the beginning working those things out, but we’ve worked out what is the easiest way to bring everyone together.” Even with The Jammin’ Divas’ busy touring schedule, Buckell said the members are still very focused on their own recording and musical projects outside of the group. “We each have individual careers,” she said. “I just had the fortune of opening up for Jewel and I also have a band that is more rock-oriented and performs my original music and music based on the poetry but is set in a different format, a more contemporary rock sound. I’m going to be recording some new original material. Becky is just releasing a new CD of her band. That is all coming up in the next six months. And Aoife is planning on recording a CD at some point as well. There are many new projects coming out but it is more about our original material with our bands that we’ve been with for years. It won’t be a new formation of the group or anything like that.” Buckell added that the attention The Jammin’ Divas draw puts their solo projects in the spotlight and vice versa. “We do find that the fans cross over,” she said. “We’ve established our following in the Northeast regions and we have a sound that has brought fans to our individual groups as well, which is fantastic.” ■ T h e Ja m m i n ’ Divas perform 8 p.m. at Sellersville Theater, 24 W. A flight full of excitement By Gary M. Kramer PGN Contributor Oscar-winning gay filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar’s latest creation, “I’m So Excited,” is a buoyant comedy that is more in the spirit of his early farces like “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” and his breakout hit, “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” than his recent, more serious works. This new film opens with a text proclaims that everything that happens in the movie is fiction and fantasy; it bears no relation to reality. And viewers who take Almodóvar’s flight into fantasyland will enjoy themselves immensely. On a Peninsula Airlines flight to Mexico, the three male flight attendants in first class — Joserra (Javier Cámara), Fajas (Carlos Areces) and Ulloa (Raúl Arévalo) — have to deal with a handful of frantic passengers when it is confirmed that the landing gear has a problem. As such, the plane is forced to circle around Toledo, Spain, waiting for an empty runway and a possible crash-landing. (The economy-class folks are all asleep, having been given tranquilizers for “Economy-Class Syndrome.”) The flight attendants try to entertain and distract the passengers, even by singing the title song in a hilarious dance

routine that may be the film’s highlight. The story may be a thin framework in which to hang the stories of the pilots, flight attendants and passengers, but Almodóvar whips up an intoxicating cocktail. When Bruna (Lola Dueñas), a psychic who senses that the flight will be a special day for everyone, enters the cockpit, she connects to the beyond by touching the pilots’ crotches. Given that the pilot, Álex Acero (Antonio de la Torre), is cheating on his wife with Joserra, and even once had a drunken sexual encounter with his straight co-pilot, Benito (Hugo Silva), it is no surprise that the virginal Bruna finds powerful forces in the cocks in the cockpit. “I’m So Excited,” which is fueled with heavy doses of tequila — not unlike the crew — is full of such naughty fun. The flight attendants decide to medicate the passengers with a Valencia cocktail, which they spike with a liberal dose of mescaline that was “ass-packed” by a hunky groom on his honeymoon (Miguel Ángel Silvestre). And once passengers like the uptight Norma Boss (Cecilia Roth) get drugged up, they mellow out and lose control. Like the lyrics in the title song, which shout, “I’m about to lose control/and I think I like it,” Almodóvar has his characters trying to hide the fact that they are,

as one man admits, “scared shitless.” The comedy that stems from this ranges from slapstick (the aforementioned musical number) to wacky coincidences. One passenger, Ricardo (Guillermo Toledo), is an actor who inadvertently reunites with his ex-girlfriend when she unexpectedly answers a call he makes from the plane to his mentally unbalanced girlfriend in Madrid. Their exchange — one of the few episodes set on the ground in Spain — is a diverting narrative curlicue that provides a nice payoff. The other episodes involve characters ranging from a dominatrix who records the sex acts of her famous clients; a banker who has swindled money on the run from the law; and a hit man who is hoping to get out of his latest job. These passengers all deal with moral issues, and how they come together and relate to one another on the doomed flight — a level playing field — is the basis for much of the film’s comedy. Almodóvar deliberately never makes any of their situations dire, as if to emphasize the fact that the film is a fiction. Even when the copilot is coming to terms with his sexual identity during an important cockpit procedure, the film is quite funny. And the filmmaker includes a comic rape scene (a running theme in all of

his films) that is less offensive than usual because of how he sets up and executes the joke. Much of the film’s humor stems from the fact that the performers are all game and having a great time. Cámara is highly enjoyable playing the chief flight attendant, a character who can only tell the truth — and does so at the most (in)appropriate times. Roth also makes her Norma a wonderfully bossy character who becomes much more tolerable for the crew (and viewers) when she’s had a dose of the mescaline cocktail. Even cameos by Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz, as members of the ground crew, are amusing.

It is great to see Almodóvar having such a good time with “I’m So Excited.” The film glides along on his zany energy, from the zippy opening credits to the farce that ensues on the flight. He uses his trademark red in everything from the curtains in first class to the details on the attendants’ uniforms, and includes some stylish imagery to keep this troubled flight joyful. By the time a pair of characters are rolling around in a sea of foam, audiences, like the passengers, will be too giddy to care if the ride was bumpy. ■ “I’m So Excited” opens July 26 at Ritz Five, 220 Walnut St.

Anna Aagenes: On the GO! “First of all, every player has played with gay guys. It bothers me when I hear these reporters and jocks get on TV and say, ‘Oh, no guy can come out in a team sport. These guys would go crazy.’ First of all, quit telling me what I think. I’d rather have a gay guy who can play than a straight guy who can’t play.” — Former NBA player Charles Barkley

PGN: Your folks sound like driven people. AA: I’d say both my parents have a really strong work ethic. Growing up, we had a big backyard and we’d always be outside. My father would be out in his woodshop or mowing the lawn and my mom would be outside with us playing softball or basketball. We grew up with a lot of physical activity being a joyful part of our lives.

We’ve come a long way as a community. I still marvel as I cheer when I hear Ellen or Elton or even the contestant on “Millionaire” casually speaking about their spouses on national TV. Same-sex marriage is gaining ground across the nation and we have a president who supports us. Even the world of athletics, long considered a bastion of homophobia, is slowly coming around thanks in part to out athletes like Anna Aagenes, a former track and field athlete at Penn. Aagenes is currently the district office director for out state Rep. Brian Sims and the executive director of GO! Athletes, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering out athletes.

PGN: What extracurricular activities were you involved with outside of sports? AA: I’m a self-proclaimed nerd and always loved school. My mom still teases me because in the summer when school was out, I would give myself homework assignments. I loved learning new things. And beyond just learning about science and history, etc., I also loved learning about different types of people. It’s one of the reasons I was drawn to the city. It also prompted me to get involved with a lot of different activist causes. I was involved in the Amnesty Club and used to read a lot about Tibet and the nonviolence movement and of course women’s issues. I went to women’s-rights marches in Washington before I was in the 10th grade.

PGN: So Aagenes is an interesting name. What is the background, and how do you pronounce it? AA: [Laughs.] It’s pronounced “Auga-nus” and it’s Norwegian. My dad’s Norwegian. PGN: Where are you from? AA: I’m from Bucks County, I grew up in a town called Plumsteadville, and then we moved to Doylestown when I was in middle school. PGN: Family? AA: I have a brother, Russell, who is a year younger than me and a wonderful person. He works in New Hope and Lambertville. PGN: Were you always an athlete? AA: Yeah, it’s always been a part of my life. It’s always been a part of my identity. I’ve played pretty much every sport but I was most known in school for playing soccer. Then in my junior year, I wanted to try something new and joined the cross-country team. One of my favorite parts of soccer was running on the field, but I had never thought of making that my sport until a friend suggested it. PGN: Were either of your parents athletes? AA: Not really with any organized sports, but they’re both very athletic people. My dad is a carpenter so he’s outside a lot and he used to swim and play golf. My mom tried out for the cross-country team when she was in high school but she didn’t stick with it because she was the only girl, so there was no team for her to run with. Now she does duathlons and triathlons and is very competitive in her age group.

than anything you’ve been involved in, is extraordinary. Knowing that I was going to be attending Penn made it even more significant. I remember getting to run in the championship 4 x 4 my junior and senior years. I ran all four years in college but that junior year was special, I ran two relays in one day, the 4 x 1,500 and the sprint medley, and we broke school records in both. I’ve won individual races but there’s something special about doing it with your teammates; passing the baton off knowing that you’ve given everything you have and trusting your teammate to do her best. Like in anything in life, you have on days and off days, but when all four of you come together and are “on” on the same day, it’s kind of magical. PGN: How terrifying is it passing a baton? AA: It’s actually scarier receiving the baton. You have someone coming in really fast and often there’s a lot of traffic. You’re trying to grab the stick while being elbowed and knocked around and there’s

PGN: When did you first have an inkling that you might be gay? AA: I think I don’t have a typical story. I don’t look back and have all these signs to indicate that I liked girls. Maybe it’s because I identify as bisexual, there was never a time where I could say that I realized that I didn’t like boys. I kind of liked everyone in general! But the first time I realized that I definitely liked women was in ninth grade when I had a huge crush. I never acted on it until 11th grade when I had my first girlfriend. I met her through soccer and we dated my junior year. I actually brought her to prom with me. PGN: That was pretty ballsy! AA: Yeah, there was no one out that I knew of in my grade, so there was no real precedent for it. I just asked and was told that there was no rule about what gender you could bring, but it was probably assumed that most girls going together were going as friends. But that night I publicly came out to everyone. PGN: Good or bad reactions? AA: Good in that there were no outward negative reactions, but I think I subtly lost a few friends who just kind of faded away after prom. But for the most part, it was very positive. I’ve always had fantastic allies in my life and felt really supported. PGN: Best and craziest sports moment? AA: I have very strong, emotional moments from the Penn Relays. To be in high school and go to a huge meet like that, bigger and faster and more exciting

If you trip after you receive it, it’s hard to make up that time. PGN: I still haven’t heard about your craziest moment. AA: I guess the 4 x 8 race we had in high school was the most epic. We were the underdogs racing against national winners. One of the girls on the team picked

to win was a Footlocker finalist winner. Our leadoff girl had been out injured so we were worried about how she would do. She ran the first leg and was in second or third position but then fell passing off the baton. The girl receiving it also tripped in the melee and we lost about five-six seconds, which in race time is huge. She ran her heart out and passed the baton to my friend Clare, who ran the race of her life against the national champion. She was right on her back, neck and neck, when she handed the baton to me. It was one of those moments when you didn’t even hear any noise. I was just laser-focused. I’d just seen people I was very close to run faster than we’d ever thought possible. I started running and ran a 2.09 with someone breathing down my back who was supposed to be the better runner. It was beyond what I thought was possible and we won despite starting with a fall that should have taken us out of the race. It was just one of those magical moments. PGN: Tell me a little about GO! Athletes. AA: Well, GO! — which AA stands for Generation Out — is a national network of current and former LGBTQA student athletes and allies. We work at high school, collegiate and postgraduate levels to educate and empower student athletes. PGN: I like the High 5 concept I read about. AA: Yes, the five objecAA tives are: visibility, because we believe it’s important to have role models. I always thought that if there had been a lesbian or bi version of Mia Hamm growing up or a Megan Rapinoe, it would have made things a lot more comfortable for me. Support; we have everything from one-on-one counseling for athletes who are struggling with questions about their sexual orientation or gender identity and we help students trying to create their own LGBTQA athlete organizations on campus. Education; we work with school administrators, coaches and fans, we distribute print and online materials and do events and workshops. Advocacy; we monitor NCAA collegiate athletic policies in order to ensure that students are protected from discriminatory issues and help advise the NCAA on how best to serve the needs of LGBTQA student athletes. And finally, leadership; we have a PAGE 26

With Independence Mall adjacent, and boasting great views inside and out, the two-story corner space that is the roost for Red Owl Tavern, 433 Chestnut St., is in a great position to be a culinary ambassador for American cuisine (or at the very least, an inviting and stylish watering hole) to the throngs of tourists and city regulars coming to the area — especially if they love meat. That’s not to say that there aren’t some fine dishes to captivate vegetarians. We adored the pickled vegetables ($8), which were refreshingly crisp for being pickled, and came with hearty tortilla chips and a great eggplant spread. On the entrée menu, the mushroom ravioli ($19) was well-balanced and had some nice textures. We expected the filling to be more of a puree but the pasta was stuffed with nice, chunky pieces of mushroom and the sauce was silky smooth. Usually dishes like this either downplay the mushroom flavor or go too earthy and strong with it, but here they struck a nice balance. But Red Owl is a carnivore’s paradise. PGN: I remember when there was resentment of butch women because people in the community felt they were too “manly,” and of effeminate gay men because they were too “girly.” I’d hoped we’d moved past that but I think of people like Brittney Griner receiving flack from the LGBT community for being too masculine. AA: Right, the internal policing we tend to do needs to stop. We need to raise awareness about that. As you mentioned, when Brittney came out, the conversation wasn’t even about her sexual orientation, it was about what she looked like, which shows how stereotypes within and outside of the community are still prevalent. I’ve seen some of the most hateful and disheartening comments about trans athletes come from within our community. I know a lot of female athletes who are afraid of being labeled as lesbian or queer just because they played a sport or had short hair. We all need to check our perceptions of what it means to be or look athletic and not make assumptions ourselves. Outside of my athlete work, I also do workshops on bi-phobia in the LGBT community. We have a lot of bi- and trans-phobia in the community. One of the campaigns we’ve been working on is for Fallon Fox, the first transgender MMA [Mixed Martial Arts] fighter. We try to provide resources to make sure all women are included in the conversation. PGN: Are you still finding a lot of bi-phobia?

AA: Yes, I think in the LGBT world, the B and the T tend to get overshadowed by the L and the G. I think it has a lot to do with representation and there hasn’t been much in the bi community. I think to a lot of people it’s still thought of as a phase. Speaking personally, it was a struggle for me and there were times when I wished I was one or the other. PGN: I think what happens is that for a lot of us who identify as gay, we used the lie that we were bisexual to kind of ease into the scary label of gay or lesbian. Because we were using the label of bisexuality as a stepping stone, we think everybody does, when for many it’s not a stepping stone, but the platform where they belong. AA: True, and for some it’s easier to try to understand things as black or white. For a long time, I choose not to label myself but then I realized that it was important to raise awareness about bisexuality and hopefully act as a role model for anyone who identifies as such. PGN: Now that you mention it, I can think of a lot of lesbian and gay public figures, but not any bi ones. Can you name three? AA: I’d say Robyn Ochs, Margaret Cho — she’s amazing — and Angelina Jolie — she’s a gorgeous person inside and out. PGN: And now for random questions. A favorite family tradition? AA: Christmas at my grandmother’s house. We always go there the night

before — my dad, my brother and my stepmom; my parents are divorced — and it’s always special. PGN: Give me three sentences about your grandmother. AA: My grandmother is an angel walking on earth. She has a heart of gold and still has both her Norwegian accent and citizenship. She’s always looked after me, and she’s one of the people that I’m closest to in the world. PGN: If you had to gain 20 pounds, what would you eat? AA: Philadelphia has some of the best ice cream, frozen yogurt and gelato places in the world, so I could probably manage to put on 20 pounds pretty quickly if I had to eat mint-chocolate-chip everything. PGN: Your worst hairstyle? AA: Bangs. Bangs were a big mistake. And I went brunette once, not good for me. I very quickly went back to being a blonde. PGN: What athlete would make the best president? AA: Brendon Ayanbadejo, the former Ravens linebacker. He’s really been an eloquent speaker as an LGBT ally and he’s very involved in social-justice issues.
