He is renowned for his attention to detail and the “contemporary timeless” style visible throughout his work. This book looks at two very contrasting seaside projects, a topic which has seen a great deal of books published in the last few years. Depending on how you pick the book up (it’s worth a good look before opening it up as it is exquisitely produced), the first is a family’s second home in Zeeland complete with Tennis court and ample parking for Range Rovers, and the second, Piet Boon’s own idyllic private residence off the coast of Venezuela inspired by tradition and naturally ventilated in its entirety. With very little text in the book, an understanding of the two projects featured depends on the beautiful photographs and their presentation, and quite frankly they are exemplary; beautifully conceived and composed page after page. You can be sure that clients who get hold of this book will quickly realise what it is they are looking to achieve. Ultimately, Architects and Designers can learn a lot from Piet Boon; his attention to detail, his skill at making spaces irresistible when photographed, his ability to converse so effectively with his clients and the timeless comfort of the spaces he creates is more than enough to inspire designers working on any type of project. Complexity Design Strategy and World View

When Vitruvius described the architect as a ‘uomo universale’, he gave rise to the architect’s conception of him – or herself as a generalist who shapes a complex reality. The architectural concept of complexity, however, failed to keep pace with industrial and social reality. Against it, architectural modernism set the watchword of simplification: ‘less is more’. In this situation, Robert Venturi reintroduced the notion of complexity into architectural discourse. Today it is complexity studies, with their starting point in physics, that define the current approach to the concept of complexity. They have established a new connection between the natural sciences and information technology and have thus become a central premise of computer-based approaches to design.

Although modern Swedish design has exercised an extraordinary influence on international architecture and interior furnishings since the early twentieth century, some of the crucial generative writings on the subject have not been widely translated, and the movement’s intellectual background is not well known. Modern Swedish Design collects three of Swedish design’s founding texts for the first time in English. In Beauty in the Home (1899), philosopher and critic Ellen Key (1849–1926) promotes simplicity and clarity of purpose with the goal of social reform. Art historian Gregor Paulsson (1889–1977) was instrumental in the spread of ideas such as Key’s; in Better Things for Everyday Life (1919) he contends that design should be true to its time and available to all, and calls for a modern design language reflecting new materials and methods. Finally, acceptera (1931), cowritten by Paulsson and architects featured in the famous Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, engages in a debate between the proponents of handicraft and those of design idioms emerging from industrial mass production.
This new title marks the fortieth anniversary of London’s Hayward gallery – itself an architectural icon, and one of the few remaining examples of the 1960s Brutalist style. The exhibition brings together the work of artists, including Atelier Bow-Wow, Michael Beutler, Los Carpinteros, Gelitin, Mike Nelson, Ernesto Neto, Tobias Putrih, Tomas Saraceno, Do-Ho Suh and Rachel Whiteread, who create habitat-like structures and architectural environments that are mental and perceptual spaces as much as physical ones. The works in this book revisit and reanimate the history of Modernist design while reminding us that built spaces can be defined in social, political, psychological, physical and aesthetic terms.
Lively illustrations and near-facsimiles of the texts’ original publications, scholarly introductions by the editors, and an essay by architectural historian Kenneth Frampton, accompany the translations.
