Few Salons have the luxury of large space, especially here in Hong Kong where space is very hard to find and expensive to rent. The key to maximizing your salon space is functionality and incorporating multifunctional equipment and furniture design.

Work with an interior designer who specializes in salon design. The designer can optimize your space by focusing on the following areas:

Reception The reception desk is the hub and brain of any salon.

Choosing the right design for your reception desk can make or break the entire look and appeal of the salon by altering its face.

It functions as a work table for taking appointments, accepting payments and storing client information. It is equally important that the client feels welcomed and relaxed.

Styling Hairdressers need space to work in. It is unfair for any stylist to feel restricted and unable to move around comfortably. This affects his work and state of mind.

Clients want personal privacy and territorial space. They feel uncomfortable in a crowded setting where they are overheard, cannot store their belongings or feel relaxed and pampered.

It might be better for a salon to set up less cutting chairs and offer better stylist/client surroundings than squash everybody together. Good client appointment management can still maintain a busy and profitable business model.

Colour Colour is a key factor when designing a salon. Colour sets the stage, creating the mood and the experience the client

will have upon entering your salon. When choosing a colour scheme, keep a few things in mind: How do you want your clients to feel in a particular space?

Warmer, softer earth tones with wood accents can create a calming atmosphere.

Using metals, glass and vibrant colour accents can energize the space.

How long do you want your clients to occupy a space?

Vibrant colours, which are stimulating, energetic and lively, tend to be used in places with fast pace turnover.

Softer hues of the same colours can be used to slow the movement to a more relaxing, calming experience.

Salon Lighting Your salon station lighting comes from two places: the front (wall lighting) and overhead. The wall lighting affects how a guest looks whilst in the salon chair. If a guest feels good about their appearance, it reinforces a positive experience for repeat business and increased revenues. The overhead fixtures provide general overall lighting to clearly perform tasks as well as light the space. If the overhead lighting is properly designed, this will provide enough illumination for hair styling and colour application.

Retail If you do not have a large salon and cannot afford to allocate a certain amount of space in reception for a retail/ boutique area, the best way to incorporate and maximize retail space is by featuring point of purchase products for display at the reception desk. Stylists who personally recommend the right products to their clients display a higher level of professionalism and care.

Disconnect asked three leading Trichologists about living in Hong Kong and possible problems [and their expert solutions] to hair loss and scalp conditions.

Trichology is the branch of dermatology that deals with the scientific study of the health of hair and scalp.

What is trichology and what does a trichologist do?

Aline Jahns explains that Trichology is the para-medical science of the hair, hair loss and associated scalp problems. It encompasses the study of the diseases of the human hair and scalp, as well as the assessment of the cause(s) and treatment of these disorders. Wing Tang adds that after pinning down the fundamental cause of the problem, a treatment program will be prescribed.

“Trichologists are trained in the life sciences, they look at hair loss problems in a holistic way by evaluating clients on the basis of personal history, lifestyle, genetic factors and environmental conditions. Assessing a hair loss condition is not always simple as the primary cause may be exacerbated by secondary factors. For instance, a condition of genetic hair loss may be accelerated with a poor diet or increased stress” concludes Aline.

“Hair has a normal life cycle, most scalp hairs last about six years and grow approximately one cm per month. After a period of six years, each hair comes to the end of its life and falls out. The hair follicle rests for a short while and then it starts to make new hair” says Wing. “Healthy hair growth requires a rich supply of oxygen and nutrients provided by the blood vessels around the base of the hair follicle. It is vital that the necessary environment for healthy hair growth be provided. Any violation of this environment will cause hair loss. Poor dietary habits do more than affect our weight and health. They also impact the wellbeing of our hair follicles. Eating the right food is important as our hair needs proteins, minerals, essential fatty acids, and vitamins in order to grow healthy”.

Aline also stresses that health is important “The health of your hair is a barometer of your overall health, meaning that there are many health factors that can influence your hair cycle, and numerous other general health factors can be important: Lupus (an autoimmune disease), digestive problems and infections may be relevant to your condition, causing conditions such as telogen effluvium (hair shedding) or cicatricial alopecia (scarring hair loss). The most important health influences are often the ones that occurred approximately four to sixteen weeks before the hair loss even became noticeable”.

What are the main (internal or external) causes for hair loss?

“There are over 46 factors causing hair loss”, says Alice Lee, “Genetics is the most common cause of hair loss. If you have direct blood relationship family members facing hair loss problems, then chances are you would too. Besides, genetics hair loss also comes with age for both men and women. These 2 factors are inevitable for most of the population”.

White hair can exacerbate stress that can make hair loss worst. Perming and permanent straightening can also be done, but make sure it is done by a specialist as it can damage hair if not done properly, causing traction alopecia”.

How does the humid climate or pollution in Hong Kong affect hair?

At what point should women and men start considering professional help for thinning hair and hair loss?

Aline says that “As soon as you realize excessive shedding or thinning you should look for a hair and scalp specialist.

Hair is a nonessential tissue, and so is the first to get affected when something is not alright in the body. In the consultation, a certified trichologist can help patients to identify early signs of chronic diseases and then send them to their primary-care physician, endocrinologist or gynecologist”. Alice agrees “One day, if you complain of sudden excessive hair loss from all over the scalp, a bald patch that has gradually appeared, of having itching and excessive scaling of the scalp, excessive oiliness secretion, these are the symptoms of hair loss. This is the time for you to seek for a professional”.

Women dealing with hair thinning and white hair: Does dyeing, perming and hair straightening cause thinning or hair loss?

Wing says “Hair plays an integral and important part in every male and female individual’s self image and the way he or she is looked upon by society. Hair is like a fine fabric: It needs to be professionally cared for with the right products and treatments to maintain its shape and to maximize its appearance. Cosmetic procedures like colouring, straightening and perming can damage your hair and cause hair loss. The chemicals used in these processes contain strong substances that can irritate the scalp and may cause skin reactions”. Alice adds that “Frequent perming and hair straightening will cause hair shaft to weaken and become brittle due to the chemicals used and high temperature of heat applied. Dyeing also can cause severe hair loss due to the dye containing Para phenylenediamine (PPD). Some clients were diagnosed with contact dermatitis due to PPD”. Aline sees it in a different way “Professional Colouring is not a problem at all, in fact we will always recommend that colour is done,

In a humid and polluted environment like Hong Kong, it is important that you wash and condition your hair regularly with a suitable shampoo and conditioner”. “Having healthy-hair habits at home, doing deep conditioning treatments after colouring and using products that seal the cuticles before blow-drying hair makes easy to handle the humidity” adds Aline “Pollution is present in two size particles.The smaller particles make hair oxidate, even more in clients with coloured hair, as peroxide can build up. Protecting hair using water-soluble silicones and blowdrying hair before going out is an easy way to be protected against pollution. Hairdressers can often feel the effects of hard water on a client’s hair even before they know that hard water is the culprit of their hair problems. Women are often unaware that their water is making their hair lifeless, brittle or dull looking”.

According to Alice “An increase in pollution can lead to a higher rate of hair loss problem. Hair and scalp is the first barrier organ which responds to the environmental damages as they are exposed directly to the surrounding environment. The Air Pollution Index of Hong Kong always remains at high level; it fastens the effect of pollutants on hair and scalp. It causes skin irritation, redness, itching, epidermal scales, faster exfoliation of outer layers exposing sensitive inner layers causing more sensitivity, even leading to psoriasis”.

Trichologists are trained in the life sciences, they look at hair loss problems in a holistic way by evaluating clients on the basis of personal history, lifestyle, genetic factors and environmental conditions. 髮理專家都接受過生命科學的培訓，會從 整體醫學的角度來探究脫髮問題，按照客 人的個人歷史、生活方式、遺傳因素和身 處的環境作出評估。

Disconnect請來了三位髮理專家，訪問他們關於在香 港居住可能面對的脫髮和頭皮問題以及專業的解決 方法。 Dr. Aline Jahns

髮理學是皮膚學的分支，從科學的角度研究頭髮和頭 皮的健康狀況。 脫髮的主要内在或外在成因？

什麽是髮理學？髮理專家的工作是什麽？ Aline Jahns解釋髮理學是針對毛髮、脫髮和與頭皮 相關問題的輔助醫療科學，研習人類毛髮和頭皮 的疾病，評估這些疾病的成因和治理方法。Wing Tang指識別出問題的主因後，髮理專家就會處方治 療。Aline概括：「髮理專家都接受過生命科學的培 訓，會從整體醫學的角度來探究脫髮問題，按照客人 的個人歷史、生活方式、遺傳因素和身處的環境作出 評估。要判別脫髮的成因殊不簡單，因爲主因可能會 受到其他次要因素影響而使情況惡化。以遺傳性脫髮 為例，不良膳食習慣或壓力增多會加劇脫髮。」

Alice Lee表示：「目前有超過46個已知的脫髮成因， 當中最常見的是基因遺傳。如果你的直系親屬有脫髮 的問題，那麽你很大機會也有同樣的問題。另外，遺 傳性脫髮亦會隨着年齡增長呈現，男女如是。對大部 分人來説，這兩個因素是無可避免的。」 Wing告知我們：「頭髮有自身的生命周期，一般來 説大部分頭髮都有6年壽命，而髮絲每月會生長大約1 厘米。6年之後，頭髮就會進入生命周期的最後階段 和脫落。稍事休息之後，毛囊會重新長出新的髮絲。 頭髮的健康生長需要靠圍繞毛囊底部的血管提供充足 的氧氣和養分，因此提供所需的有利環境對健康髮絲 的生長很重要，任何有違這些利好條件的情況都會導 致脫髮。不良的飲食習慣不但影響體重和健康，也會 影響毛囊的健康。健康的頭髮生長需要蛋白質、礦物 質、必要的脂肪酸和維生素，故此進食適當的食物很 重要。」 Aline亦強調健康的重要性：「頭髮能反映你的整體 健康狀況。很多健康因素會影響頭髮的代謝，常見的 狼瘡（一種自體免疫的疾病）、消化系統問題和感 染等都有機會造成脫髮，引致休止期禿髮（Telogen Effluvium）或疤痕性禿髮（Cicatricial Alopecia）。其 實，這些疾病帶來的主要健康影響在脫髮變得明顯之 前的4至16星期前早已浮現。」 何時應該尋求專業人士的協助？

Aline說：「其實當你發現頭髮大量脫落或變得稀疏， 就應該向頭髮和頭皮專家尋求協助。頭髮是非重要的 組織，然而一旦身體出現毛病，它就會首當其衝受到 影響。在咨詢過程當中，取得認證的髮理專家還可以 幫助客人識別一些慢性疾病的早期病徵，將他們轉介

對苯二胺（PPD）的染劑也可以引起嚴重的脫髮，過 去甚至有客人因爲PPD而患上接觸性皮膚炎（Contact Dermatitis）。」 對此，Aline則有不同的見解：「專業染髮根本不成 問題，事實上我們反而會建議客人染髮。因爲客人本 身就為脫髮而飽受壓力，而白髮的出現更會令壓力倍 添，繼而使脫髮問題更趨嚴重。客人也可以進行電髮 和永久性直髮，大前提是必須交由專業人士操作，否 則可能會引致牽引性脫髮（Traction Alopecia）。」 香港潮濕的氣候或污染問題如何影響頭髮？

往家庭醫生、内分泌科或婦科醫生，及早治療。」對 此，Alice也深表認同：「有一天如果你發現頭上出現 大面積的脫髮，逐漸浮現禿斑，痕癢和頭皮出現大量 鱗片和過多的油脂分泌，這些已經是脫髮的症狀。你 就不應遲疑，向專業人士求助。」 女士會因為頭髮稀疏和白髮進行染髮、電髮和直髮， 這樣會令頭髮變得更稀疏或脫髮嗎？ Wing表示：「頭髮對男女個人形象的建構來説都是 重要和不可缺少的，頭髮也影響社會大衆對一個人的 觀感。髮絲就好比上乘的衣料，需要悉心的專業護 理。使用適當的美髮修護產品，以保持頭髮的形態和 最佳外觀。染髮、直髮和電髮等美髮工序都會令髮絲 受損和引致脫髮。它們所用的化學物含有成分強烈的 物質，會刺激頭皮或令皮膚出現過敏反應。」 Alice補充：「頻密的電髮和直髮以及當中的化學物 質和高溫處理，會削弱毛幹，使其容易折斷。含有

This year’s winner of the Style Masters 2015 International Contest Country Winner Hong Kong is Ming Wong of Hair Garden.

Other finalists were Kocher Yau of Kanzaki for Hair, Tea Choi of Hair Trinity and Nic Leung of X-ONE. Ming Wong told us that her creative hair work was driven by the encouragement of her husband, Rocky Cheung.

She acknowledged the importance of persistence and teamwork in hair creation.

A Creative Work Seminar was held at AHMA Studio

by Shiseido Professional to share the skills required to construct hairstyles based on design theory, rules and principles of “Total Beauty” and how to select the most suitable designs and styles. Simultaneously, providing tips for hairstylists who are planning to join the upcoming Beauty Innovator Award 2015 photo contest.

班上擔任客座講師，教授創意髮藝創作的理論。之後，髮 型師利用假頭即席創作，更可與客座攝影師Phoebe Wong 合作拍攝，學習如何與攝影師溝通，表達自己的概念。 兩位獲邀嘉賓於同日早上亦於香港知專設計學院會議廳舉辦 的髮型攝影講座進行全程真人模特兒創作示範，與120位髮 型師及該校100位學生分享如何構思髮型概念並結合化妝及服 飾，以展現技術及髮型的線條，同時有效地與工作團隊合作。

Stylists attending the seminar created their own styles on the mannequins after an inspiring talk by guest speaker Joji Taniguchi, Hair and Make Up Artist of SHISEIDO Beauty Creative Team. They then cooperated with the guest photographer Phoebe Wong for a photo session to experience how to communicate their concepts during the shoot.

The two guests also gave a live demonstration in front of 120 hairstylists and 100 students of Hong Kong Design Institute during the Photo-Shooting Tech-in seminar.

They shared with the audience how to develop a concept for a hairstyle and incorporate this with makeup and dress design that comprehensively shows the technicality and shape of the hairstyle whilst effectively being able to communicate with other team members.

The Style Masters 2015 International Contest and Hair Show reached its zenith in Rome. Revlon Professional’s competition recognized the talent of the best hair stylists during an incredible gala conducted by Miquel Garcia and attended by 3,500 guests from 33 countries. A delegation of 18 professional local hair stylists led by New Star Hair Products Co. Ltd Hong Kong was also privileged to attend.

The Global Winner of 2015 went to Natalia Zheglova, from Inessis Salon, Russia.

During the Gala, Orofluido Asia presented an Asian décor with dragons, Japanese drums and models sporting Asian style trends. Cliff CK Cheung, the Global Winner of the 2013 International Contest, helped out backstage for the performance.

Best Technique Award: Nándor Tamás Varga, Döbrei Szalon, Hungary. 今屆露華濃專業美髮造型大師國際賽及髮型匯演已於羅馬 圓滿結束。這場盛典由品牌的國際藝術及教育總監Miquel Garcia主理，匯聚了來自全球33個國家共3,500位髮型師，以 嘉許一眾實力雄厚的優秀髮型師。一如往常，新星髮品有限 公司率領代表團出席，今年就有18位本地髮型師隨團參與， 見證這項年度盛事。今年國際賽由來自俄羅斯Inessis Salon 的Natalia Zheglova奪得世界冠軍的殊榮。

同場還包括以下精彩的髮型匯演：Orofluido Asia團隊為模 特兒打造充滿亞洲風格的造型，配以龍、日本鼓等裝飾，呈 現出滿滿的亞洲風情。本港髮型師兼2013年度國際賽世界冠 軍得主Cliff CK Cheung亦參與團隊的後台工作。

Miquel Garcia在360º Premium Education Method環節中， 向來賓示範露華濃專業美髮的自家剪、染技術。

Revlon Professional Bellissima Spring – Summer Collection and American Crew collections inspired the audience.

來賓也從露華濃專業美髮的Bellissima春夏系列和American Crew系列中得到不少啓發。

Revlon Professional’s Fall in Love Collection closed the show with an English countryside full of English traditions.

最後壓軸上演的是露華濃專業美髮充滿英倫傳統郊野氣息的 Fall in Love Collection。

Davines Club members were recently treated to an informative hair styling demonstration by Swedish hair master Mr. Joe-Yves Asmar at the AHMA Studio, Central.

Award winning Mr. Joe-Yves Asmar demonstrated 3 elegant updos to almost 100 invited hairstylists. The demonstration included a sleek chignon, a sophisticated plaited comb-up and a graceful chignon.

Mr. Joe-Yves Asmar was recently awarded as the International Stylist of the Year in the Canadian Hairdresser Mirror Awards.
