SAN SEBASTIANspain

Donostia-San Sebastiån, is the capital city of the province of Gipuzkoa, in the Basque Country, Spain. As result of Donostia’s sprawling in all directions, first into the flatlands shaped by the river Urumea and later up the hills, new districts arose since the walls of the city were demolished in 1863.

The Fosterito by Norman Foster

top left: The Guggenheim Museum building was designed to appear as random curves that catch the light, with the intent to appear as a ship. The refelective tiatanium panels are to resemble fish scales. To truely understand the Architecture of the Guggenheim, one must learn the story of the city and its plan.

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It is the thirdmost populous municipality in the European Union after Greater London and Berlin, and its metropolitan area is the third-most populous in the European Union after Paris and London. Photography above shows streets near La Puerta del Sol one of the most well known and busiest places in Madrid.

The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II has attracted high profile retail selling most things, since its construction 130 years ago.

ROMEitaly

above: the famous Spanish Steps is one of the urban monuments of Roman Baroque style. At the foot of the stairs sits the famous Barcaccia Fountain.

St. Peters Basilica has the largest interior of any Christian church in the world, holding 60,000 people. It is regarded as one of the holiest Christian sites. It has been described as the greatest of all churches of Christendom.

FLORENCEitaly Florence lies on the River Arno and is known for its history and its importance in the Middle Ages and in the Renaissance, especially for its art and architecture.

Ponte Vecchio or “Old Bridge” is a Medieval bridge over the Arno River, in Florence, Italy, noted for still having shops built along it. Butchers initially occupied the shops; the present tenants are jewelers, art dealers and souvenir sellers. It has been described as Europe’s oldest wholly-stone, closedspandrel segmental arch bridge.

VENICEitaly Venice is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry

The Ponte della Costituzione or Constitution Bridge, is the fourth bridge over the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. It was designed by Santiago Calatrava, and was moved into place in 2007.

VIENNAaustria

Vienna is Austria’s primary city, with a population of about 1.7 million, and is by far the largest city in Austria. The Naschmarkt is Vienna’s most popular market. Located at the Wienzeile, it is about 1,5 kilometers long.

left: Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the exhibition building soon became known simply as “the Secession.� This building became an icon of the movement. During this time, architects focused on bringing purer geometric forms into the designs of their buildings.

BERNswitzerland

The city of Bern is the is the Bundesstadt, or federal capital of Switzerland, with a population of 122,925, the fourth most populous city in Switzerland.

below: Zentrum Paul Klee Centre; Piano took inspiration from the silence of water and responding to the gently sloping site, the result is this bold wave-form structure. The “waves� enclose 3 large volumes - the main hall, one of the exhibition halls and a library space; on the underground level is the other exhibition hall, the art education studios, the offices as well as an auditorium.

ZURICHswitzerland

Z端rich is a mixed hub for railways, roads, and air traffic. Both Z端rich Airport and railway station are the largest and busiest in the country.

The last building designed by Le Corbusier, synthesizes Corbusier’s genius. Yet it marks a radical change of his achievement of using concrete and stone so poetically. He framed his final masterpiece in steel and glass and thus created a signpost for the future.

BERLINgermany

Berlin is the capital city and one of 16 states of Germany. With a population of 3.4 million people it is Germany’s largest city. The city is recognized for its festivals, diverse architecture, nightlife, contemporary arts, public transportation networks and a high quality of living.

The museum adjoins the old Berlin Museum and sits on land that was both East and West Berlin before the Berlin Wall fell. The new addition was designed by worldrenowned architect Daniel Libeskind.

DRESDENgermany

Dresden has a long history as the capital and royal residence for the Electors and Kings of Saxony, who for centuries furnished the city with cultural and artistic splendour. The city was completely destroyed by the controversial Allied aerial bombing towards the end of World War II. The impact of the bombing and 40 years of urban development during the East German socialist era have considerably changed the face of the city.

HELSINKI & TAPIOLAfinland

Tapiola is a district of Espoo on the south coast of Finland. It was largely constructed in the 1950s and 1960s by the Finnish apartment foundation and was designed as a garden city.

Helsinki is the capital and largest city in Finland. It is in the southern part of Finland, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, by the Baltic Sea.

Stockholm is known for its beauty, its buildings and architecture, its abundant clean and open water, and its many parks. It is sometimes referred to as Venice of the North.

COPENHAGENdenmark

First documented in the 11th century, Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in the beginning of the 15th century under the reign of Christian IV. above: The Gefion Fountain was donated to the city of Copenhagen by the Carlsberg Foundation on the occasion of the brewery’s 50-year anniversary.

The Little Mermaid (Den lille havfrue in Danish) sits on a rock in the harbour of the capital of Denmark. Based on a tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and a major tourist attraction.

HSB Turning Torso is a deconstructivist skyscraper in MalmĂś, Sweden, located on the Swedish side of the Ă–resund strait. It was designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and officially opened in 2005. The tower reaches a height of 623 feet; upon completion, it was the tallest building in Scandinavia.

AMSTERDAMholland

Amsterdam has a rich architectural history. The oldest building in Amsterdam is the Oude Kerk (Old Church), at the heart of the Wallen, consecrated in 1306. It is one of only two existing wooden buildings. It is also one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in Amsterdam.

ROTTERDAMholland Kubuswoningen, or cube houses, are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in The Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom in 1984. The concept behind these 3 stories houses is that he tries to create a forest by each cube representing an abstract tree; the whole village becomes a forest.

The city of Paris, largely unchanged since 1860, has an estimated population of 2,203,817 but the Paris metropolitan area has a population of 11,769,433 and is one of the most populated metropolitan areas in Europe.

The architecture in Brussels is diverse, and spans from the mediaeval constructions on the Grand Place to the postmodern buildings of the EU institutions.

BRUGESbelgium Bruges is the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It is located in the northwest of the country.

Antwerp has long been an important city in the nations of the Benelux both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury of the Dutch Revolt.

The Louvre, one of the world’s largest museums, the most visited museum in the world, and a historic monument. The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace (Palais du Louvre) which began as a fortress built in the late 12th century under Philip II.
