ReďŹ llable, customisable, sustainable mascara applied to the lashes with your ďŹ ngertip. This design is Patent Pending.

“ PERSONAL CAR CARE AND BEAUTY PRODU PRODUCTS ACCOUNT UNT FOR FO 1/3 OF LANDFILL WASTE. ” Sustainable Brands, 2011

“AROUND 1 BILLION MASCARAS ARE SOLD WORLDWIDE EVERY YEAR.” premiumbeautynews.com

DEFINING THE PROBLEM

Mascara is an untapped, unsustainable FMCG that needs revision. Females usually throw their empty mascaras into their bin as there are no visible recycling symbols on the current packaging, plus users aren’t bothered about recycling as it is an inconvenience. The mascara is often lost as there is no perceived value to the product.

INSIGHTS

Numerous insights were pulled out from primary and secondary research uncovering user habits, perceptions and values of mascara and other beauty products.

IDEATION & PROTOTYPING

Ways to apply mascara to the lashes were explored in a variety of concepts, leading to over 21 prototype iterations tested on over 14 different users. Models ranged from low ďŹ delity cardboard and polymorph, to precision 3D printing.

FINAL PROPOSAL

Infinity mascara offers a revolutionary new way to apply mascara, with a 3D printed fingertip that fits the individual’s finger form. Securing overwhelming environmental benefits over current designs, per person, one purchase of Infinity can save an estimated 25 mascara bottles from landfill.

MEA

An infant height, weight an BMI centile measure used at NHS home visits and clinics.

“MANY CHILDREN ARE RELUCTANT TO COMPLY, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A RETURN VISIT. ” NHS Nursery Nurse, Dorset

“I CARRY 4 BAGS.. BACKPAIN IS COMMON.” NHS Health Visitor, Warwickshire

PROBLEM

Current NHS equipment to measure 2-5 year old height and weight is hard to transport, inaccurate and intrusive for a young child. After interviewing NHS Health Professionals, child development experts and product suppliers, key areas to improve were: 01 Child-friendliness 02 Portability 03 Ease of use

“NOT CHILD-FRIENDLY.” NHS Health Visitor, Lincolnshire

MIRROR

PROPOSAL An all-in-one infant measure that uses ultrasound sensors to accurately measure height without contact, scales for weight, and an app to calculate BMI.

FINAL DESIGN

Ultrasound sensors inside the antenna measure height, whilst the scales housed in the suitcase read weight. All the data is recorded using an app which can connect to the eRedbook. After measurement, LEDs around the ‘head’ light up to reward the child. Extra components help assess fine and gross motor skills.

USER TESTING

A high ďŹ delity model was tested on over 15 different users, including NHS Health Visitors, Nursery Nurses, Doctors, Child Experts, parents and 2-5 year olds. Feedback was very positive, concluding the whole measurement experience had been totally improved. Mea helps to bring a fun and positive perception of NHS measuring processes from a young age,.

FINAL PRODUCT

Through a series of user feedback sessions at a trade fair and garden centres, a target market was formed with needs and preferences outlined. The resultant design was a luxury outdoor chair made from Clear Red Western Cedar.

ADDITIONAL CONCEPTS

As well as chair and table sets, other concepts produced on the placement included a camping pod for ‘glamping’, and a BBQ Hut for a new cooking experience in the garden.
