Observing the world around me takes an important place in my creative life. I usually draw people in public spaces, where I find an interesting atmosphere to capture. I constantly use sketchbooks to reflect personal thoughts and a way of expression, as a language and a tool to observe reality and to understand it better. For this project, my aim was to bring those drawings to life; I created an animation from a reportage converging people and place. I went to the Borough Market in London to document the progression of a day from early morning until the closing. It was a very enjoyable experience, a total immersion into the market atmosphere which I keep a very good memory recorded into my sketchbook and reworked in an animation.

After receiving the permission letter from the Borough Market, I decided to take a coach from Bournemouth to London to go to the Borough Market Saturday 5th of April. After leaving Bournemouth at 3 in the morning, I arrived at the Borough Market a little bit before 7 in order to be able to draw people setting up their stands, before the market opens.

My intention for this unit was to explore a space through visual documentation with a screen based media, which in the past I haven’t investigated into yet. This place, the market, has been explored through observational drawings, which I have developed into an animation using both traditional hand drawn animation and computer programs. I have learnt how to use After Effects to edit, assemble and animate my imagery. Learning After Effects has been beneficient for my practice, it took me a while to get used to the program but I have managed to achieve what I wanted to. I have learnt a lot about this program! Researching through sketching on location has developed my idea and also inspired me; observing people on the market was important for the animation. My objective for this animation was to create a study of people in this place, the market, where there is people passing but also where the venders install their articles early morning, which I am particularly interested in to document. This animation could be seen as a promotion for the Borough Market, which is a touristic place in London. This animation is available for tourists who want to explore and shop during their visit to London, this will give them an idea of what they can find at the Borough Market.

Storyboard

Drawing on location at the Borough Market has also helped me to storyboard. I found it very helpful to have this drawing documentary already done when I started storyboarding. I based the narrative of the animation on the day spent at the market; the animation starts from early morning until the closing of the market.

The audience I aim for is adults, parents as well as young couples looking for an original activity to do on a Saturday. This animation is for people not familiar with the place such as tourists however it could also be for Londoners who want to relax and shop on weekends. This animation has the purpose to give to my audience an idea of what the Borough market looks like, what kind of ware customers can find, and also to discover a great variety of products.

This is from the first animation test I have done using After Effects and my sketchbook drawings.

As well as using After Effects for my animation, I also have worked traditionally on paper using different medias such as inks, chinagraph, watercolours and pencils.

For this part of the animation I have used After Effects, Photoshop and my sketchbook drawings.

The entire soundtrack of my animation has been recorded on location at the Borough Market. I have edited the sounds with this program called ‘Audacity’ which was very easy to use.

Meanwhile, I put all the animations together with iMovie which I have also used fot editing and for adding sounds to the animation.
