ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015
LETTER FROM THE CEO
“What was once a tiny 10-student school has blossomed into two organizations that are taking New Jersey and the nation by storm. ” -Miguel J. Brito
Finally, Philip’s Academy ended the year with many 8th graders readying to attend elite boarding and day schools in the fall. In total, the 8th grade class was awarded over $650,000 in financial aid. This is even further proof that our students are valuable candidates in an increasingly competitive secondary school application process. We have created a program developed around a rich and diverse learning environment rather than test scores, which continues to separate our students from the rest of the “pack.” Thank you for your support, you are part of our great success. We invite you to join us for a visit to see the Philip’s Academy students in action on the Rooftop Garden or working in the Teaching Kitchen. Please call the advancement office to set up a visit at 973-624-1164. Warm Regards,
Dear Friends, Miguel J. Brito, CEO In closing the book on another successful year at Philip’s Education Partners, I cannot help but feel proud of all that we’ve accomplished. What was once a tiny 10-student school has blossomed into two organizations that are taking New Jersey and the nation by storm. It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have been approved for the National School Reimbursable Lunch Program. This has been the result of over a year of discussions with the federal government about the possibility of fitting our food standards and community table service (where students serve themselves) into their program. This good news has great significance and paves the way for us to take the program to our proposed network of schools. It has even greater significance nationally, proving that it is possible to participate in the program using the highest nutritional values, while taking advantage of local produce, served in a setting that reinforces a sense of community and the “family” meal. Finally, it demonstrates that student responsibility and ownership can be built into a system where they are both partners and innovators themselves. We are also proud to announce that our STEM focused i2 Camp was at maximum capacity for the second year in a row. The camp roster was a mix of students from suburbs like Summit and Maplewood as well as our own students and low-income children from other Newark public schools. Through gifts and grants and a partnership with Schools That Can, we were able to offer more than $35,000 in financial aid to deserving students who would not otherwise be able to afford a program as advanced as i2.
