WELCOME TO JANUARY (& FEBRUARY) There are lots of winter activities to do like ice skating and sledding, not to mention the occasional snowball fight. But there’s been one thing missing this January...and it’s snow! Last year it was a winter wonderland, but what happened this year? All of a sudden it’s dry as the desert! The scorching heat feels like we’re in summer again. Could it be Global Warming or some supernatural source, who knows? Although in Kansas and California right now it’s a regular old winter, it’s been warm everywhere else. Why could this be? And it seems like Scientists aren’t even concerned about it. Sure there has been a little flurry here and there, but it was immediately melted by the scorching heat - it was close to 70 degrees during the week of Christmas! That’s crazy! But wait….it seems that the snow may not let us down. The blizzard of 2016 is coming! They are calling for 15-18 inches of snow, gale force winds, and flooding along the coast. It looks like January is going to be a snowy month after all! Let’s hope that we get some snow and go back to what makes winter winter! Justin McDonald Life as an 8th Grader As an 8th grader, it is important to try to branch out and make new friends. Things definitely get a little shaky and who you were friends with in 6th grade, you might not be friends with in 8th grade. In 8th grade, the goal is to at least make it through this year, then you can go to high school and there's plenty of new people. If you do make new friends it doesn't mean you can't talk to or hang out with your old ones. It’s not like you have to "break up" with your old friends. Just make sure you don't stop talking to them completely. That is something I have learned in my life as an 8th grader. Don't worry, I’ve been in pretty much the same place as everyone who has been in the 8th grade that you would know. In 8th grade you’re like the big dog in the school. And whoever tries to disrespect you and our school will be stood up for. In 8th grade. you need to chill! But you also have to stress about a lot of stuff! Your friends will come and go, but you can always make friends by just randomly talking to people in class or introducing yourself to people outside of school.

This weekend we celebrated the leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the great leader whose legacy continues to carry on with his 4 children. He was born in 1929 and died in 1968 at the age of 39. Fun facts to know about him: he has a memorial named after him, his father was a reverend and MLK has a doctorate in Systematic Theology. Martin Luther King, Jr. inspires me because he has helped millions of AfricanAmericans like myself. He tried to teach the world how important it was for all races to get along, and he tried to remind us all to never fight and to accept everyone for who they are. There are the values that I also think that Philip’s Academy tries to instill in us. Thinking about Martin Luther King is important! George Okungwu Maybe you can even just go online and get an Instagram to make friends. And, finally, if you have so many problems with your friends, then slowly let go. Honestly, all the things your teachers have been telling you are true, about how it only gets worse as you go along. You have more work and stress. So enjoy your 6th and 7th grade years! PACS PEP RALLY - 2016

Edible Car Contest

The Pep Rally at PACS happens every year during the second week of January. The Pep Rally is a way to get our school ready for the girls and boys basketball and cheer season. This year during the Pep Rally each student athlete was introduced from both the girls and boys basketball team and cheer squad. Mr. Augello was in charge of this year's Pep Rally. He worked hard and long to make pep rally more interesting and “lit” as the students would say. There was an exciting playlist of music playing while the three-point contest was going on. Several different teachers and students participated in trying to shoot the ball from the three point line. In addition, the Falcon Cheerleaders performed a dance and a spirit cheer. They even did a pyramid. Nia Love, the cheerleader who was at the top of the pyramid, explained that it was “really scary and fun at the same time.” The squad worked very hard to perfect this dance and their hard work clearly paid off. In conclusion, PACS Pep Rally 2016 was so much fun and had to be one of the most enjoyable pep rallies that we’ve had in a long time! Naa Afoley and Kaylah Coleman

This month, the 7th and 8th graders at Phillips Academy took part in the second Edible Car Contest. It consisted of over 20 groups making cars out of all foods. Some of the foods used were donuts, cookies, squash, cucumbers, rice cakes, Twizzlers, spice drops, gummy bears, olives, carrots and pumpkins. The students had rules they had to follow in order to participate in the contest. For instance, the car couldn’t be over 500 calories and none of the contestants could eat the food or they would be disqualified. There were also 4 categories that the groups competed in. The four categories were the farthest distance, best connection between team name, team logo and the car, best teamwork, and most creative. This project was for students to explore math and science, but this project was considered a S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) project. Overall, students had a great time working together and using their brains.

IN THE DINING ROOM & TEACHING KITCHEN AT PACS January has been an exciting month in the dining room and teaching kitchen. We are well underway with our Recipe of the Month, Kimchi, featuring our cold-hardy Harvest of the Month, cabbage, having made a total of 4 batches so far with the 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders. Kimchi is a traditional Korean fermented food with cabbage, ginger, garlic, carrots, and radishes. This week will complete January’s fermentation fest with the upper school while February will bring PACS’ first annual Collard Green Cook-off. In the dining room, Chef Rob has been working hard to bring the PACS community local and fresh produce for our delicious meals we enjoy so much, and his hard work has paid off! Starting this month, PACS will be ordering from Local 7, a food service company that sources seasonal and local produce from New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania farms. Additionally, exciting items now available at Farm Stand every Thursday are local apple cider and honey bears. Our tastings this month included a Ginger Cabbage Slaw and a Lentil and Watermelon Radish salad. What’s a watermelon radish, you may be asking yourself? It’s a radish that looks like a watermelon on the inside! How cool is that?

21st Generation Music vs. Back in the Day Music My generation is full of exciting music that will entertain people. My music from my generation will make you get up out of your seat and dance in some sort of way! Everyday there is a new artist born. Right now, my favorite artist is Tori Kelly. She is very inspirational. She has appeared on The Ellen Show a couple of times. My dad is always playing some kind of song from his generation. Sometimes when I'm in the car with him, he plays a song from his generation and tries to make me sing to it.

THE LAMBORGHINI The Lamborghini is a super car that everyone wants. They go 0- 60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds. If you want a fast car you need a Lamborghini Hurracan or a Lamborghini Aventador. I personally want a Lamborghini Murcielogo because it is the faster version of the Diablo. If you really want go fast you would buy Lamborghini. If you want a Lamborghini, you better have $300,000 because all Lamborghinis come with a special sport package. They all come in all black, green, yellow, and blue. This is why we all need Lamborghinis because they are truly the one of the coolest cars in the world! Stay tuned for my top-ten car list!

Shawn Thompson

But usually, on those days, I'm just not in the mood. You know...it’s about regular teenage things and moodiness. My Dad’s favorite artist, at least one that I know of, is Prince. He always is playing one of Prince’s songs in the car when I’m coming home from school or in the car going with him somewhere. My mom, on the other hand, is pretty up to date with today’s music. She has Facebook, which keeps you up to date with the music of my generation so she knows the kind of people my generation listens to. But still, she would rather listen to her own music which is Christian movement. I guess I don’t mind listening to Prince, but I would much rather listen to my own music. It’s more fun and creative! Rayne Harrison

CLOTHES – 21ST GENERATION In my generation there are big clothing companies. One famous company that a lot of people in my school wear is Adidas. Adidas style is very popular and is very styilish. The next popular brand is Old Navy. Currently old navy has a sale going on. So far, I have been there 5 times just to catch their sale before it disappears. When my cousin came up from Virginia, she went to OLd Navy and spent her cash until she was broke! The next store that keeps up with the clothes from the 21st century is Aeropostale. All year round they have stylish clothes. Their store is always packed with people every day and the only thing I hear is people saying “excuse me, excuse me” to get through. Sometimes it can get really annoying. But their clothes are still stylish enough for you to keep going in there. But right now my favorite store is Old Navy because of their sales. I just love a good sale - go check it out!!

Kobe’s Retirement

Alabama VS Clemson

Kobe is retiring and to me this is tragic news. I am very sad and wish he would have won one more than 5 championships before he retired, but I guess he won't. Kobe scored 82 points in a game which is the most ever by a shooting guard. Kobe and my favorite player Kevin Durant are great friends. When they played each other, the LA Lakers vs OKC, the Lakers lost, but as a sign of respect, KD and Kobe exchanged sneakers. Kobe has been in the league for about 18 years. He played with the Lakers for the whole time. Kobe has had 11 signature shoes and his last one was the Kobe 11. I am sad that he is leaving, but all greats must leave the NBA.

January 11, 2016 was the BCS National Game. The teams playing were the Alabama Tides and the Clemson Tigers. I saw the game, and let me tell you, it was a good game! But as usual, Alabama came out on top. The score was 40-45. That is a BCS record. Here are the stats for the game: Derrick Henry, the Heisman Trophy Winner had 142 yards and 2 touchdowns this was a good performance. Clemson put up a fight with 452 passing yards, and 110 rushing yards. Overall, it was an entertaining game. I want to say a “Congratulations!” to Alabama they deserved to win this game! Karl Anthony Towns went to the game because he went to Alabama.

LET’S GO FALCONS! LET’S GO!!! The Lady Falcons are off to an amazing start with zero losses. The starting forward, Madison Johnson, was titled ¨Athlete of the Week” because of her contributions to our many wins. The Lady Falcons are ahead of the Falcons in terms of wins and were just awarded a trophy for winning the 2015 Winter Tournament. Captains Taraji Brown and Ashia Ellison uphold their responsibilities of calling plays and leading the Lady Falcons toward victory. Led by Coach T, Coach Arnecia, and Coach Bri, the Lady Falcons are looking forward to an incredibly successful season! Kaya Moody

Summer Theo came to our school in late fall, 2 weeks before winter formal even though it was near winter the temperature was still in the 80's. He came out of his car in a Nike T-shirt & shorts. I remembered because it was bright pink. It was bubble gum color. My teacher introduced him as Theo Chase from New York City. This wasn’t his first time in Palm Springs. My boyfriend Dylan was saying something, but I wasn’t listening. Theo had made butterflies in my stomach.

The shower was turned up to about 67 degrees. The glass was fogged and the wetness of the walls, were making it harder to hold on. I got out and grabbed my towel. I wrapped it around my body. I went to my room and got dressed. As soon as I stepped foot into the kitchen, the doorbell rang. It was Saturday so the maid had the day off. I opened it to see Dylan standing there with flowers. I t was a beautiful bouquet of Tiger Lilies and pink roses. He asked me was our date still on, and I said no because I needed to study. Dylan and I talked for awhile before he left.

Dylan left and Theo came. “What are you doing here,” I asked him. “Umm… I came to apologize for “Why were you at the lake?” he asked 3 months “None of your business” I responded. “I’m just trying to get to know you, but if you-” My dad was making me attend his Saturday Science classes. I didn’t want I cut him off and breathed out. “ It was December 14,2013 two days before to go, but I wanted to please my dad. Three weeks into the program I got my best friends birthday. She had been recently diagnosed with brain my first test back. It was a 68. My dad was furious at me when he saw it. “I cancer” am a world famous scientist; I can not have my 17 year old daughter I grabbed the box of tissue. failing my own class.” I cried and left my house, he was disappointed in “The doctors said that there was a surgery that she could have, it was a me. I had tried my best and still let him down. 50/50 chance of working.” I started to feel the tears in my eyes. “ We were so hopeful that it would workout. She was like a sister to me. We told each I walked to my car and drove to a lake. My best friend and I used to talk other everything, we helped each other through drama and boys, when and sit there, every afternoon. If she was here, she would’ve comforted me my dad was mad she would be the shoulder I cried on. So when the and told me it was okay. I opened up my wallet and saw her picture doctors said that she hadn’t made it, I was devastated, Summer Marie Carsmiling back at me. Tears of sadness rushed back to me. I was starting to ” get up, but somebody said “wait, don’t go”. My head swerved to the left “Carter, age thirteen, yeah I know she was my cousin” and then to the right. Then I saw his face. It was Theo. I hadn't really I couldn’t hold the tears back any longer, the rushed out full force. talked or seen much of him after his first day at school. He was sitting I hugged him and cried. under a shaded tree. I asked him why was he here. “ I just needed to Savannah Love breath” he replied. I saw sadness and grief in his eyes. Before I had the chance to say anything. He asked “Why is the most popular girl in school sitting all alone at a lake, shouldn’t you be shopping or hanging out with someone?” I felt a sting in my mind. People always judged me on my looks or popularity. I gave him a glare and responded with “ I am here with someone.” I left him with a startled look of confusion.

WHAT HONESTY MEANS TO ME AN EXPOSÉ ON THE VIRTUES OF PHILIPS ACADEMY What honesty means to me is tell the truth – no lies. Tell the truth. No one will get mad at you even if you did the right thing. What honesty also means to me is tell the truth to everyone including yourself, your friends, your teachers, your family and your grandparents; everyone you know so now we know to tell the truth. Remember: no lies, just tell the truth. Shenae-Olivia Watt

Honesty means to me to tell the truth and to accept your consequences and do not make excuses. You won’t get in more trouble if you tell the truth. It is important to because it could depend on your behavior which could make your grades go down, so it is better to be honest and do not make excuses. You can be a leader if you be honest. You can do great things in your life and people will trust you. That is why honesty is helpful! Michaela Rose Uzoukwu

Honesty means to me to always tell the truth. Honesty also means to me that you do not make up a lie on purpose. Honesty also means to me to show integrity to your friends and teachers. Honesty also means to me to always take responsibility for your actions. Honesty also means to me not tell lies to not get in trouble. Honesty also means to me to not believe rumors that might not be true. Taahir Jones

EDITOR’S NOTE The month of January has been a very busy month. It was certainly hard to come back after a long and relaxing break, but the PACS students and faculty got themselves up and running quickly. The FALCONS basketball team – both the girls and boys’ teams – started out the season by winning their games. We then followed up with a PACS PEP RALLY that was bursting with school spirit. One of our students, Robbie Rivera, dunked with two hands! It was pretty impressive! During our last community time, we celebrated Martin Luther King Day with a video from Kid President and a music video of the song Shed a Little Light performed by two amazing acapella groups, The Maccabeats and Naturally 7. It’s always nice to take a break from a busy day to listen to something special. The month of January was also SPIRIT MONTH, and students and teachers alike had tons of fun with 4 dress down Fridays in a row! From Team Day to Wacky Day, and then Twins Day and finally Pajama Day, PACS was abuzz with the excitement of being out of uniform and the freedom (with some guidelines, of course J ) to dress as we pleased. From onesie pajamas and slippers, to oversized glasses and pom pom hats, the PACS community thoroughly enjoyed expressing themselves.

MEET A HERO Charles Hamilton Houston The Man Who Killed Jim Crow Dr. Charles Hamilton Houston, born in our nation’s capital, Washington, D.C., in 1895, was a nononsense African American lawyer who is simply known as “The Man Who Killed Jim Crow”. But how? Let’s meet a hero. Dr. Houston was an English professor at Howard University until 1917 when he served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Infantry during World War I. After returning home in 1919, he was admitted into Harvard Law School, earning both a Bachelor and Doctor of Laws degree by 1923 (he was also the first African-American to become an editor for the Harvard Law Review). By the 1930’s, he became special first counsel to the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) and subsequently was involved in almost all of the legal cases regarding civil rights. He later joined Howard Law School’s teaching staff where he was a mentor to another great man known as Thurgood Marshall (who was later appointed to the Supreme Court).

Of course, much cooking went on in the teaching kitchen with the Harvest of the Month being Kimchi. Stay tuned for PACS’ first annual Collard Green cookDr. Houston used his influence at Howard to recruit off coming in February! the best of the best, targeting the idea of unequal education due to the severity of Jim Crow laws. He Finally, January did not disappoint us in terms of pioneered the extremely successful strategy of forcing snow! Northern NJ got over 2 feet, forcing PACS to close its doors for two days in a row. I don’t think any states to either integrate their white-only schools or allocate funds to match the services and resources of us thought we would be seeing snow this winter, but we certainly got enough snow to last us for a long provided at these white-only schools (remember Oliver Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka). He time!
