THE WEDDING

CHECKLIST Congratulations on your engagement! This is an exciting time, and deserving of celebration. However, you do not want to let your head stay in the clouds for too long. After all, you have a wedding to plan! Are you ready? Then let’s get started! ORGANIZE EVERY THING

While this may seem like something you can do later on, this is a very important step.

þ Get a big and sturdy folder to stuff everything in. You’ll be putting all your research in here, like band choices and location ideas. You’ll also want to use this folder to keep receipts and other wedding related documents in here. You may use more than one folder, of course. D AT E S

Of course it is simple, but it is imperative. Get the dates set as soon as possible. þ Get the wedding date set. After all, this is the big day that everything else is revolving around. Consider the seasons. Do you want your wedding framed with green grass or white snow? Perhaps you would prefer the reds and oranges of autumn? þ Set a date for your rehearsal dinner. This should be no more than a week before the wedding itself, but preferably not the day before either. þ If you are having an engagement party, that should be set for a date not too far off from the engagement. Of course, you cannot just call everyone you know and tell them to come over that day after he proposed. Give your guests at least a month’s notice before expecting their presence at these events. þ Bachelor and bachelorette parties are usually planned by the best man and maid-of-honor respectively. This isn’t your job to plan this party. However, you should insure that your friends don’t plan the parties on dates that are inconvenient for you. C O N S I D E R T H E C O O R D I N AT O R

If you go down this list, and ask how on earth you are going to be able to do all of this, you may want to consider getting a wedding coordinator.

important details. þ You can get a lot of ideas from magazines and websites. Take clippings and printouts to put in your wedding folder. YO U R W E D D I N G PA R T Y

MONEY MAKES THE WEDDING

No matter who is paying, you need to work out a budget. þ WORK OUT A BUDGET FOR THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIES... ¨ Location fees (for both the ceremony and the reception) ¨ Invitations ¨ Food and drink ¨ Clothing and Makeup (this includes the bride’s dress, make up, and accessories, as well as the groom’s tuxedo) ¨ Decor (decorations for both venues) ¨ Service fees (for the officiant, the caterers, the florist, the photographer, the band/DJ, etc) ¨ Wedding Rings ¨ Stationary (for invites and programs) ¨ Transportation and After-Wedding Lodging

þ Start thinking about who you want in your wedding party. Start asking your girlfriends you would like as your bridesmaids if they want to be in the wedding. Have your groom start thinking about what guys he wants as his groomsmen. þ Decide upon and finalize all the formalwear. This includes the mens’ tuxedoes, the girls’ dresses and all accessories. P L A C E YO U R O R D E R S

After having envisioned what you want things to look like, it is time to get specific.

þ Find specifics. Choose the stores and specific items. Then, buy them. ¨ Find and pick out your dress. ¨ Then order it. ¨ Find and pick out his tux. ¨ Then have him order it. You can make free websites and blogs from various places like Wordpress and Blogger. DESIGNING THE DREAM

All white? Something blue? Or a splash of everything? Design plays a huge role during the big day. þ Think colors. Do you want one or two? Maybe more? Whatever you choose, just make sure the colors do not clash. þ Think clothes. What style of dress do you want to wear? What kind of suit do you want him to wear? What do you want your bridesmaids to wear? What do you want the groomsmen to wear? These are very

þ Don’t forget the stationary. ¨ Print out and mail your invitations if you haven’t done so already. ¨ Have the programs designed and printed. THE LEGAL STUFF

As much of a personal, emotional event this is, it is also a legal ceremony. þ Find an officiant. Whether you want a religious leader or just someone who had “the power vested in” them

þ Take care of the legal documents. You will need to apply for a wedding certificate at your local city hall.

THE WEEK BEFORE

T H E D AY O F

All the effort is accumulating this week.

The time has come...

þ

Have the rehearsal dinner. Rehearse the ceremony as many times as it takes to get it right. Then treat your attendees to a small dinner. During the dinner, you may want to also practice the ceremony.

þ

Call everyone to double-check things. ¨ Call the caterer. ¨ Call the photographer. ¨ Call the officiant.

þ þ þ

Pay everyone whom you haven’t yet paid. Relax. Enjoy the day and all the beautiful memories that are sure to follow.

Today’s wedding market is saturated with favor ideas and products designed for the bride and groom seeking the perfect gift for their guests. While it is crucial to consider budget and practicality when choosing a favor, it is equally important to make sure it reflects the couple’s personality and personal interests. Ecofriendly and earth-conscious couples may give out seed packets, reusable water bottles or shopping bags made of recyclable materials. The sports fan couples may provide drink holders with their team logo. A couple with diverse heritages may choose traditional items from their respective cultures to share with friends and family. The point is making it personally reflective of the couple. SINCE THE FAVOR IS THE TAKE-AWAY OF THE DAY, IT SHOULD BE A VIVID REMINDER OF WHO GOT MARRIED AND HOW THEIR LIVES AND INTERESTS ARE BLENDED TOGETHER FROM THAT DAY FORWARD. While a silk pouch of M&Ms does provide a nice snack for the drive home, it is quickly forgotten and does not speak of the couple’s lives merging. Unless of course, their initials are M and M! Another way to personalize the favor and make an excellent keepsake for the day is to incorporate the wedding’s location or theming into the favor. A golf club reception may include tees personalized with the bride and groom’s name and date. Miniature tequila bottles are great for a Mexican fiesta reception. A wine bottle stopper or corkscrew is great for a Tuscan theme or a reception on the grounds of a winery. Couples should be careful to keep in mind that a great favor is also practical for the guests to keep

BY T Y L E R WA R D once they arrive back home. A horseshoe with ribbon matching the wedding colors and the couple’s name hand painted may tie in beautifully with a barn wedding theme, but what will they do with that item when they return to daily life in a city? The favor should not just be personal for the bride and groom. Weddings today are often out of town events that require hotel stays and airline flights. The closest family, friends and business associates are chosen to participate in one of life’s most important events. So the wedding favor needs to show appreciation for that effort and support. Perhaps a personal note could be attached to each favor. A QUICK, HANDWRITTEN THANK YOU FOR EACH FAMILY ATTENDING CAN MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION TO GO ALONG WITH THAT PERFECT SOUVENIR. Another way to personalize for each guest is to incorporate the favor with the place cards or table setting. A CD of the wedding music with each guest’s name and table number on it can be an excellent place card. A small photo frame with the guest name printed inside can be placed at each table setting for guidance in seating arrangements. A digital camera and small photo printer onsite can allow each family to take home a snapshot of themselves with the bride and groom. These personal touches take a little extra time, but they demonstrate an appreciation for the time and effort it takes to attend a wedding event and support a marriage. Everyone enjoys feeling special, even on someone else’s special day. Although wedding guests may not know or understand the history and tradition behind the wedding favors custom, they do understand being noticed and appreciated. Happy memories of a day of celebration and love will hopefully never fade. But it doesn’t hurt for wedding guests to take away a small memento that reminds them of the bride and groom, the details of that special day, and the appreciation that was felt for their presence. It’s like icing on the cake!

DESTINATION

Wedding planning takes a lot of time and effort. When you add an can be stressful trying to coordinate a destination wedding. Here a Despite the added stress, destination weddings are becoming an increasingly popular choice among couples who desire a celebration that’s different from a traditional church affair. To reduce stress and make your planning as hassle-free as possible, here are five tips for planning a destination wedding.

Nail Down the Guest List Whether you’ve chosen a far-flung tropical location or an intimate mountaintop retreat for your destination wedding, it’s essential to firm up the guest list before you make a deposit on a wedding venue. Instead of assuming that only a few people will attend your destination wedding, MAKE SURE TO HAVE AT LEAST A TENTATIVE HEAD COUNT BEFORE RESERVING A VENUE. FAILING THAT, KEEP YOUR GUEST LIST TO A MINIMUM TO AVOID OVERCROWDING.

Negotiate Planning a destination wedding can be expensive, so you should always negotiate with the hotel and vendors to receive the best price possible. They want you and your guests’ business, so they are more likely to negotiate with you for a lower price rather than risk losing your business entirely. Whether you’re having a small gathering or hosting hundreds of people, make sure to ask about special discounts or package deals wherever you book your wedding and reception. Additionally, DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR A CREDIT ON ITEMS IN A WEDDING PACKAGE THAT DON’T INTEREST YOU. AT THE VERY LEAST, ASK ABOUT SPECIAL GROUP RATES FOR HOTEL ROOMS OR FREE UPGRADES FOR YOU AND YOUR GUESTS TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF.

Give Advance Notice Typically, wedding invitations are mailed three to six months in advance of the date. With a destination wedding, however, your guests will appreciate extra time to work your celebration into their budget or rearrange preexisting plans they already have.

WEDDINGS

n exotic locale to your plans, it are a few tips to get you there...

To play it safe, PLAN TO MAIL SAVE-THE-DATE CARDS AT LEAST 8 MONTHS IN ADVANCE OF YOUR ACTUAL WEDDING DATE so your intended guests have ample opportunity to rearrange their schedules to celebrate your special day with you. FOR THOSE WHO CAN’T ATTEND, YOU CAN ALWAYS THROW A LOCAL PARTY WHEN YOU RETURN FROM YOUR WEDDING.

Consider a Local Wedding Planner

Rather than planning every aspect of your destination wedding yourself, consider hiring a local wedding planner to assist you. A local planner can help immensely, especially if you are marrying in an area unfamiliar to you. Additionally, LOCAL WEDDING PLANNERS ARE LIKELY TO HAVE PRE-EXISTING RELATIONSHIPS WITH VENDORS AND CAN OFTEN FIND THE BEST DEALS FOR YOU. This doesn’t mean you have to give up total control of your wedding plans, but a local can often nail down details that would be difficult for you to arrange on your own.

Know the Legalities

A destination wedding can become complicated with certain legalities of different countries come into play. To avoid last-minute surprises, make sure you familiarize yourself with the legal requirements for tying the knot in the country and/or city you plan to wed. For example, many foreign countries have a “residency” requirement that stipulates the bride and groom must be in the country for a certain length of time before they can marry. To avoid running afoul of the law, make sure you are able to conform to all legal requirements in the location you plan to have your wedding ceremony.

W H Y I B E G A N M Y B U S I N E S S : I began my business in June 2004 and am celebrating my 8th year in business in 2012. I am naturally organized, detail oriented and have mastered time management from an early age. Being the oldest and closest to my grandparents growing up, I was a natural leader and was appointed the family organizer and coordinator for all our family events. I have been planning and organizing special occasions and high school special events; and my own Sweet 16th since 1989 in high school. Seeing all of their happy expressions and the final production of everything I planned brought a natural high for me.
